• Ethernet card not detected on Ubuntu Server 12.04

  My onboard ethernet isn't detected after a re-install of Server 12.04. For reasons I won't get into here, I had to put the server's drive into another machine to install Ubuntu, then swap back into the server. So the server starts up fine, except for the "Waiting for network configuration". I read in another article that Server, by default, doesn't handle new mac addresses for hardware changes dynamically, unlike Ubuntu Desktop, but a look at /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules shows only one ethernet interface. Shouldn't it show both the old, and the new? lspci -vv shows an ethernet interface, so what the heck is going on? I should mention that the onboard LAN is enabled in the BIOS. And I know this isn't important, but all this started when I changed some network configuration settings in webmin before the re-install. It couldn't download any updates, so I tinkered a little. Broke, it, installed FreeNAS, which worked, but I didn't like it, then went back to Ubuntu Server, and now I'm in this pickle. Thanks for any advice!

• Cloning (mirroring) laptop display to area of external monitor display

  I'm using Maverick "10.10" Meercat on a HP Pavilion tx2110. This machine has an NVidia Go6150 graphics card, and sports a 1280x800 display. I have an external monitor which can do 1280x1024 resolution. FWIW I'm using openbox as my window manager; as I understand it this shouldn't be a factor. I'd like to clone the display to the monitor, so that the size of the desktop remains at 1280x800, and there is a horizontal blank area on the external monitor. I.E. I want to avoid having to pan the display of the desktop on either monitor. So the actual resolution of the monitor would be 1280x1024, but the resolution of the section of the monitor where stuff was actually being displayed would be 1280x800. Using the nvidia-settings applet, I'm able to set up the cloned display so that the desktop size is 1280x1024 (the resolution of the external monitor), but can't find a way to instead have the desktop size stay at the resolution of the laptop's built-in display. Is this achievable? Ideally I'd like the external monitor's blank area to be at the top of the screen, i.e. for it to align the display with the bottom of the screen.

• Running 12.04 as a gateway - resolvconf, dhclient and dnsmasq integration

  I have a gateway server which is set up originally with Ubuntu desktop 12.04 - perhaps a mistake, I don't know, something to bear in mind. I ripped out network-manager and now want to get resolvconf, dhclient and dnsmasq to play well together. dhclient gets the gateway's eth0 WAN ip address and the ISP DNS name server from the modem. dnsmasq needs to serve dhcp to the rest of the lan on eth1 and acts as a DNS cache both for the lan and for the gateway machine. I also set up iptables as a firewall. Right now, the gateway's /etc/resolv.conf shows only name server = 127.0.0.1 which is correct AFAIK. However I don't think that dhclient is giving dnsmasq the ISP DNS name server nor is dnsmasq picking up the OpenDNS and Google name servers I specified in /etc/network/interfaces - at the moment look-ups, i.e. ping or surfing, don't work unless I manually edit /etc/resolv.conf to put in an upstream name server like 8.8.8.8 So I removed the resolvconf package. Now I'm not getting dhcp on my lan and I'm not able to do DNS look-ups on the host itself - I can surf and ping on the net, but not 127.0.0.1. Where do I go from here? This setup with the config for dhclient and dnsmasq, and the same resolv.conf and hosts files worked on my old debian box.

  The Morning Brew is a great news source for developers for many years now. In its most recent post it mentioned an extension for Visual Studio 2010 and 2012 called IntelliCommand that implements something that I had wanted for quite some time: Some kind of dynamic help for hotkeys. IntelliCommand shows a popup when you press and hold Ctrl, Shift or Alt (or combinations thereof) for a configurable amount of time, or after you press the first key combination of a chord shortcut key (e.g. Ctrl-E) and wait for an (independently configurable) amount of time. In the following screenshot I pressed and released Ctrl-E, and after a short delay the popup appeared: The extension is available in the Visual Studio Gallery, so finding, downloading and installing it via the Extension Manager is extremely simple: The default delays (2000 / 1600 milliseconds) are a bit long for my liking, but this can be changed in Tools – Options: So far things are working great on my machine. Some known issues do seem to exist, though (e.g. that the extension doesn’t work on non-EN versions of Visual Studio).   Are you tired of the same old wallpaper on your Ubuntu desktop? Now you can go from blah to literally spacious, real-time styled views of Earth with the xplanetFX Wallpaper App for Linux. You can conveniently access the “file type” downloads, screenshots, and jump-to links all on the front page. For our example we downloaded the .deb setup file on our system. The setup file will need to download three additional files to complete the setup process. After those are downloaded all dependencies will have been met and you can complete the installation process. Once that is done you can find xplanetFX by going to the Accessories Section of your Ubuntu Menu. This is what the main control window looks like when you start xplanetFX for the first time. You should take a few moments to look through the various tabs and tweak the settings for items like location, screen resolution, timing, auto-start, etc. When you are done click on Execute and within a few moments your desktop will have a fresh new look!   I have been fiddling with this code for a few days. Mind you I am a beginner. I just want to get my script to be able to download a remote file, and scan MineCraft plugins. I got the scan plugins to work, but I'm having two other issues. • Update to kernel 3.12 seems to fail: uname reports old rc7

  I currently run Xubuntu 13.10 with kernel 3.12 rc7. Today I tried updating to the latest 3.12 kernel (non-rc), but this seems to fail. When installing the image and headers I see the following error passing by: ... run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/dkms 3.12.0-031200-generic /boot/vmlinuz-3.12.0-031200-generichis Error! The dkms.conf for this module includes a BUILD_EXCLUSIVE directive which does not match this kernel/arch. This indicates that it should not be built. ... After rebooting, when I do uname -r or cat /proc/version it tells me that I'm still running on the old rc7 kernel. Since my microphone wasn't working on my Sony Vaio Pro 13 I did download and install the latest ALSA drivers using the oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms package which seem to fix the problem (with the mic). Maybe this has something to do with it? I also tried removing the package using sudo apt-get purge oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms but no success.

• Can't boot Ubuntu 12.04 from external Hard Drive using Mac

  Recently, I upgraded the RAM and hard drive on my Early 2008 Macbook to improve the performance. Rather than throw away the old hard drive, I bought an enclosure for it to turn it into an external hard drive, and, since all the data was migrated to my new drive, I decided to install Ubuntu on it for funsies (note: I am a near-total Ubuntu n00b). My first attempt to install Ubuntu didn't work (it gave me errors about not being able to find the BIOS or something), but my second attempt finished successfully (can't remember what, if anything, I did different). However, when I plug the external drive into my Macbook, it gives me a message saying it can't read the disk. Moreover, when I go into the Startup Manager (i.e.: what you get when you turn on the Macbook while holding the option key), the external drive is not one of the available startup disks. I thought this might be because I have an older Macbook, so I tried booting it with my mom's Late 2011 Macbook, and got the same results. Then I tried booting it through my dad's Dell laptop that runs Windows 7, and that time it worked. This is really counter intuitive to me, since the hard drive originally came from a Macbook, so if anything you'd think it would be less compatible with the Windows laptop than the Macbook. In case it helps, here's a link to a picture of how I set up the partition table while doing the install (not shown there is the fact that I checked the "Format?" box next to the /boot partition, since it gave me a warning when I tried to continue the installation without doing so) Anyone have any clue at all? If it helps, the hard drive I'm using is a 120GB 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard disk drive.

  Big Data is everywhere these days - but what exactly is it? It’s data that comes from a multitude of sources – not only structured data, but unstructured data as well.  The sheer volume of data is mindboggling – here are a few examples of big data: climate information collected from sensors, social media information, digital pictures, log files, online video files, medical records or online transaction records.  These are just a few examples of what constitutes big data.   Embedded in big data is tremendous value and being able to manipulate, load, transform and analyze big data is key to enhancing productivity and competitiveness.  The value of big data lies in its propensity for greater in-depth analysis and data segmentation -- in turn giving companies detailed information on product performance, customer preferences and inventory.  Furthermore, by being able to store and create more data in digital form, “big data can unlock significant value by making information transparent and usable at much higher frequency." (McKinsey Global Institute, May 2011) Oracle's flagship product for bulk data movement and transformation, Oracle Data Integrator, is a critical component of Oracle’s Big Data strategy. • EVENT RECAP: Oracle Health Sciences Conference

  Monaco served as an intense location for this year's Oracle Health Sciences User Group conference.  It was a "Grand Prix" event with nearly 200 attendees from all over the world.  In a country famous for high performance race cars, luxury super yachts and lifestyles of the rich & famous, the conference was very Ellison-esque. I think the Superyachts were being paired with Exadata. The OSHUG staff were fantastic . Robin and Taylor (pictured left) from Drohan Management took care of all the details and were wonderful to get to know. I met with some real Oracle loyalists.  Stan Sachar,  I.T. Manager for Westat, and the Focus Group co-chair for Admin Configuration Mgmt (ACM).  Westat was an early adopter of Oracle Clinical for clinical trial projects with installations in 1997-98.  I had a chance to talk with Stan during the reception and he is an Oracle advocate and evangelist. He's invested in his career in using Oracle products. (Stan Sachar pictured right with Dick Wolnick from Oracle, on left) I also met with Mirco Becker from Grunenthal Gmbh.  He's been working with the Argus product for over 6 years.  He's a big user of Oracle Support. Mirco attended my support best practices session and was actively engaged and asked several questions.  He's excited to adopt those best practices and work more efficiently and effectively with Support. Finally, I thank the many who attended my session.  I admit, the beautiful weather and view of the ocean was a distraction, but nonetheless my mission was to provide you with all the necessary support resources for Health Sciences users. • How can dev teams prevent slow performance in consumer apps?

  When I previously asked what's responsible for slow software, a few answers I've received suggested it was a social and management problem: This isn't a technical problem, it's a marketing and management problem.... Utimately, the product mangers are responsible to write the specs for what the user is supposed to get. Lots of things can go wrong: The product manager fails to put button response in the spec ... The QA folks do a mediocre job of testing against the spec ... if the product management and QA staff are all asleep at the wheel, we programmers can't make up for that. —Bob Murphy People work on good-size apps. As they work, performance problems creep in, just like bugs. The difference is - bugs are "bad" - they cry out "find me, and fix me". Performance problems just sit there and get worse. Programmers often think "Well, my code wouldn't have a performance problem. Rather, management needs to buy me a newer/bigger/faster machine." The fact is, if developers periodically just hunt for performance problems (which is actually very easy) they could simply clean them out. —Mike Dunlavey So, if this is a social problem, what social mechanisms can an organization put into place to avoid shipping slow software to its customers?

• Codifying a natural language requirements spec

  I have a fairly technical functionality requirements spec, expressed in English prose, produced by my project manager. It is structured as a collection of UI tabs, where the requirements for each tab are expressed as a lit of UI fields and a list of business rules for the tab. Most business rules are for UI fields on a tab, e.g: a) Must be alphanumeric, max length 20. b) Must be a dropdown, with values from table x. c) Is mandatory. d) Is mandatory under certain conditions, e.g. another field is just populated, or has a specific value. Then other business rules get a little more complex. The spec is for a job application, so the central business object (table) is the Applicant, and we have several other tables with one-to-many relationships with applicant, such as Degree, HighSchool, PreviousEmployer, Diploma, etc. e) One such complex rule says a status field can only be assigned a certain value if a many-side record exists in at least one of the many-side tables. E.g. the Applicant has at least one HighSchool or at least one Diploma record. I am looking for advice on how to codify these requirements into a more structured specification defined in terms of tables, fields, and relationships, especially for the conditional rules for fields and for the presence of related records. Any suggestions and advice will be most welcome, but I would be overjoyed if i could find an already defined system or structure for expressing things like this.
