  • Understanding the Linux Root

    I've been using Linux (Ubuntu) for about 2 weeks now and am still struggling with some basic concept surrounding the root user: (1) Some terminal operations (such as making subdirectories inside a FHS directory such as /opt) require me to prefix the command with sudo - why? I guess what I'm choking on is: if I'm already logged in as a valid system user, why do I have to be a superuser/root in order to modify things that the sysadmin has already deemed me worthy of accessing? (2) Is there a GUI (Gnome, KDE) equivalent to sudo? Is there a way to assume a superuser role through a graphical context, rather than from inside a new shell? (3) I can't access the /root directory logged in as myself... but I installed the system to begin with and was never asked to create a root account! How do I log in as root and gain access to /root?!? Thanks for all feedback & input!

  • Force Finder to log in as Guest to a SMB share

    I have a QNAP NAS that offers a few SMB shares. As I'm in a trusted environment, my shares are accessible as guest rather than with a combination of username and password. Problem Now, when I click the name of the device in Finder's sidebar, I get the black "Connection failed" bar, with the option "Connect as...". When I click that, I receive: I can however press ? + K and enter the server's name manually, which gets me to this window: Here, I have to select "guest". Now, I can select one of the shares to connect to, and I'm finally connected to the server. If I select it in the sidebar, I get a list of all shares available, because I'm connected as "guest", obviously: What I need Well, as soon as I unmount all shares, I have to go through the same procedure of manually logging in as "guest" again, which I find quite annoying. Is there any way I could get Finder (or the underlying SMB client) to know which credentials to use? Or should I look for the solution rather on the server side? (I know that other SMB shares seem to work fine in my network) Diagnostics The only thing I can get out of Console.app is: 5/15/11 7:36:40 PM /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder[200] SharePointBrowser::handleOpenCallBack returned 64 This message occurs when I click the name of the SMB server in the Finder sidebar.   • Windows Virtual Machines will not run

    I'm trying to setup a few virtual machines to use for testing websites in the various old versions of IE. I had Microsoft Virtual PC working on an older machine using XP mode and 2 other VHD's from Microsoft that allowed me to test in IE6-IE8. I've recently gotten a new work machine and am trying to set up the VMs again for testing, however nothing seems to be working. Both the old and the new system run Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate with AMD processors. I downloaded Virtual PC & XP mode from here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx and go through the installation process. XP mode is installed, but when I try to run it it goes through the initial setup process only to fail when it is almost complete with the error "Cannot Complete Setup". (After googling I see that this might be a conflict with my processor) I download other VHD's from here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx in order to get the other versions of IE and try to set those up in Virtual PC as well. I click on them to start the machine and both Windows 7 with IE8 and Windows Vista with IE7 just hang at a black screen. I try to use Virtual Box instead, and I get Windows XP with IE6 running, but I have no internet connection in the VM. I try all different settings and try to google the correct settings but nothing seems to work. When I load the VM, XP shows that its found new hardware but it needs the drivers. One of these pieces of hardware is the network adapter, but I can't connect to the internet to download the driver in the guest OS. VirtualBox tells me I need to install extensions in order for things to function properly. I go through the installation process in the guest OS and restart the VM, however now XP is asking for validation and I can't access the VM. I try installing the other 2 OS (Vista & 7) but I get a BSOD right after the startup screen appears and the VM restarts itself. I'm getting so frustrated trying to make this work, I would really appreciate any assistance on getting the VMs up and running or any alternatives for testing websites in Internet Explorer.

  • Why is my keyboard acting like the Ctrl key is pressed when I hit an F key?

    So, I'm gradually getting the hang of the Kinesis Advantage Pro keyboard that my wife bought me for Christmas. I love it so far. But something very strange happened today. (Note: I actually have no idea if this problem has anything to do with the Kinesis keyboard per se. All I know is that I never encountered this problem until after replacing my old keyboard with the Kinesis.) It seems that if I press an F key (e.g., F2), the computer starts acting like I'm holding down the Ctrl key. For example if I click on a link in my web browser, it now opens in a new tab. Or if I hit A all the text in the document I'm editing gets selected. This behavior persists until I manually hit the Ctrl key again. Has anyone seen anything like this before? What could cause such behavior?

  • Outlook 2007 - Monospace/preformatted quickstyle

    In Outlook 2003 I could set a block of text as preformatted, which was mighty handing for emailing code snippets. This prevented line wrapping, and specified that a monospace font be used in whatever email client recieved my email. Now in Outlook 2007, there are at least three problems: 'Plain Text' style (apparently the closest thing to 'preformatted' as a style) is buried beneath about five clicks, and adding it to the quick style gallery and saving the gallery seems to be forgotten (bug?) It uses some fancy Microsoft font 'Consolas' that is not on some of my coworkers machines that use thunderbird It does not appear that there is any way to get it flagged as a monospace font so that other email clients will display it properly. Does anybody know how to quickly set text to 'preformatted' as Outlook 2003, meaning A) use a monospace font B) flag it as monospace for other clients C) avoid hard line breaks?

  • Multiple mouse settings on laptop?

    I'm wondering if this is possible. I use a macbook, running windows 7...when I don't have an external mouse connected, I leave the left/right settings of the buttons to the default. But when I plug in a mouse, I change that setting (since I use the mouse left-handed). When I unplug the mouse, I would like it to revert to the "unplugged" setting. Is there a way to get windows to remember mouse settings based on which device it's using?

  • Indexing Service filter daemon keeps crashing on WinXP; something worse underneath?

    The Indexing Service filter daemon keeps crashing on my WinXP Pro machine, with the following error message: "Indexing Service filter daemon has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Not a big deal, I can click "Don't Send Error Report" all day. But what's going on, here? Is this a service that I need? Is the frequent crashing indicative of something worse that's happening behind the scenes? Thanks!

  • VNC authentication failure

    I try to connect to my vncserver running on CentOs from home computer, behind firewall. I have installed Win7 and Ubuntu both on this machine. I have an error: VNC conenction failed: vncserver too many security failures even when loging with right credentials (I reset passwd on CentOs) I get: authentication failure. I observe that I have to wait a whole day to be able to relogin at all. Is it something regarding that I try as root? I think important is also that I have to login to remote Centos through port 6050 - none else port works for me. Do I have to do something with other ports? I see that vncserver is listening on 5901, 5902 if another added - and I consider connection is established because from time to time (long time) the passwd prompt appears,... right? I have created additional user1, password for him to CentOS and to VNC, also user2. I do: service vncserver start and two servers starts, one :1, and second on :2. When I try to connect to vncserverIP:1 I get what described above, but when I try connect to vncserverIP:2 it says that the trial was unsuccessful. please help, what to do? additionally: how to disable this lockout for a testing purposes?

  • Is it possible to remove constant "beep" sound from recording?

    Whenever I record with my microphone, I get this constant beep sound on the background. It appears only when I turn volume up, so it is not very loud, but its noticable and pretty annoying. Because it is constant sound, I thought it should be possible to filter just that one frequency, but I have absolutely no idea how to do it.

    Due to company restrictions where I currently work, My windows users folder %USERPROFILE% is space restricted. I get a warning that I must delete files before I can log off. Because of that, I have moved everything else out of my profile folder (maven repository, IntelliJ configuration & cache). I need to tell Firefox to put userprofiles somewhere else on my machine (like for instance C:\ff_profiles\ ). How do I do that?

    Hi. I was able to get Mac OS X 10.6.2 to work on my 64-bit Acer on VirtualBox multiple times, but I would like to update to 10.6.6. Every time I do, however, I continue to get this annoying error, saying that the kernal and OS version mismatch, and the OS Version is no longer set.   • Building a new PC, Installing XP, blue screen of death

    I got a gigabyte barebones kit and am installing windows-XP(SP1) and the initial setup works, then it restarts and goes into the second phase of the setup. Then when installing components (I think that's what it says) it gets half way done and comes up with a blue screen saying IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. BUT! I had gotten past that by installing windows-XP media center addition Now I am trying to install the drivers for my Asus ATI Radeon 5770 graphics card and I get another blue screen of death that doesnt give much info something about address x0000005. Would you think there is something wrong with something in my system or do you think if I got windows 7 that would take care of things? Sorry for probably not giving enough info.   • In Windows 7, can a program overrride file associations not set in "Set Default Programs"?

    I am using Windows 7. I installed a media application (KMPlayer) that does not show up in the "Set Default Programs" list. Now in the KMPlayer's preferences, there's a setting to associate file types with itself. But when I tried that, I noticed that the files still default to Windows Media Player. So can I assume that no external application can change the program associated with a file type unless explicitly done via the: [Set Default Programs] or [Associate a file type ... with a program] or the [Open with...] options? Thanks in advance! Btw, I know there are utilities that can help me batch change it. I'm just more curious about the "rules" that Windows 7 has in place regarding file types and their associated programs.

  • Where can I learn various hacking techniques on the web?

    I would like to try my hand at hacking -- that is, exploiting various website vulnerabilities. Not for any illegal purpose mind you, but so I can have a better understanding and appreciation of these exploits while writing my own web software. I seem to recall that there was a community that hosted a bunch of demo websites, and you had to find and exploit certain vulnerabilities with each one. I can't remember what it is called but this is the sort of thing I am looking for -- I have read a tonne of little XSS and CSRF examples but have yet to find a real-life hands-on example of one. Does anyone know of such a place, where I can be given an example page and look for security holes? I would really rather not try this with actual websites, I don't want to break any laws.
