  Since the first preview of Sesame was published, I've been working on improving it with new features.Today, I've published an update that provides the following: Support for hyperlinks (URLs and email addresses) Improved support for the OData format. More OData producers are supported, including Netflix and vanGuide, for example. Fixed display of images (images used to appear mixed up) Support for image URLs Image zoom (try to hover over pictures in Netflix' Titles or MIX10's Speakers) Support for complex types (test this with Netflix' Titles and the OData Test Service's Suppliers) Partial open types support Partial feed customization support (Products.Name and Products.Description are now displayed for http://services.odata.org/OData/OData.svc for example) Partial HTML support Query number is now unique by connection and not globally Support for query continuation (paging) - See the "Load more" button Partial support for <FunctionImport> (see Movies, Series, Seasons, Discs and Episodes with Netflix) Version number is now displayed More links to examples (coming from http://www.odata.org/producers) provided in the connection dialog You can try all this at the same place as before. Choose Netflix in the connection dialog to see most of the new features in action and to get a richer experience. There is a lot more in the pipe. Enough to keep me busy for a few more weeks :-)

• SQL SERVER – Discard Results After Query Execution – SSMS

  The first thing I do any day is to turn on the computer. Today I woke up and as soon as I turned on the computer I saw a chat message from a friend. He was a bit confused and wanted me to help him. Just as usual I am keeping the relevant conversation in focus and documenting our conversation as chat. Let us call him Ajit. Ajit: Pinal, every time I run a query there is no result displayed in the SSMS but when I run the query in my application it works and returns an appropriate result. Pinal:  Have you tried with different parameters? Ajit: Same thing. However, it works from another computer when I connect to the same server with the same query parameters? Pinal: What? That is new and I believe it is something to do with SSMS and not with the server. Send me screenshot please. Ajit: I believe so, let me send you a screenshot, Pinal: (looking at the screenshot) Oh man, there is no result-tab at all. Ajit: That is what the problem is. It does not have the tab which displays the result. This works just fine from another computer. Pinal: Have you referred Nakul’s blog post – SSMS – Query result options – Discard result after query executes, that talks about setting which can discard the query results after execution. (After a while) Ajit: I think it seems like on the computer where I am running the query my SSMS seems to have the option enabled related to discarding results. I fixed it by following Nakul’s blog post. Pinal: Great! Quite often I get the question what is the importance of the feature. Let us first see how to turn on or turn off this feature in SQL Server Management Studio 2012. In SSMS 2012 go to Tools >> Options >> Query Results > SQL Server >> Results to Grid >> Discard Results After Query Execution. When enabled this option will discard results after the execution. The advantage of disabling the option is that it will improve the performance by using less memory. However the real question is why would someone enable or disable the option. What are the cases when someone wants to run the query but do not care about the result? Matter of the fact, it does not make sense at all to run query and not care about the result. The matter of the fact, I can see quite a few reasons for using this option. I often enable this option when I am doing performance tuning exercise. During performance tuning exercise when I am working with execution plans and do not need results to verify every time or when I am tuning Indexes and its effect on execution plan I do not need the results. In this kind of situations I do keep this option on and discard the results. It always helps me big time as in most of the performance tuning exercise I am dealing with huge amount of the data and dealing with this data can be expensive. Nakul’s has done the experiment here already but I am going to repeat the same again using AdventureWorks Database. Run following T-SQL Script with and without enabling the option to discard the results. USE AdventureWorks2012 GO SELECT * FROM Sales.SalesOrderDetail GO 10 After enabling Discard Results After Query Execution After disabling Discard Results After Query Execution Well, this is indeed a good option when someone is debugging the execution plan or does not want the result to be displayed. Please note that this option does not reduce IO or CPU usage for SQL Server. It just discards the results after execution and a good help for debugging on the development server. • Ubuntu only boots with USB plugged in

  I'm new to the Linux world so please bear with me! :-) I installed Ubuntu via USB drive onto my hard drive. If I boot the PC without the usb drive I used, Ubuntu will not load. After booting I can unplug without any consequences. I looked on the hard drive and there is a boot folder. On the USB drive, this is the tree contents: /media/disk$ tree . |-- adtext.cfg |-- boot.cat |-- f10.txt |-- f1.txt |-- f2.txt |-- f3.txt |-- f4.txt |-- f5.txt |-- f6.txt |-- f7.txt |-- f8.txt |-- f9.txt |-- initrd.gz |-- isolinux.bin |-- isolinux.cfg |-- ldlinux.sys |-- linux |-- menu.c32 |-- menu.cfg |-- po4a.cfg |-- prompt.cfg |-- splash.png |-- stdmenu.cfg |-- syslinux.cfg |-- text.cfg |-- ubnfilel.txt |-- ubnpathl.txt `-- vesamenu.c32 Am I correct in my assumption that the boot aspect is associated to the USB drive? If so, how do I get it to boot without the USB? I'm guessing copying into some location and modifying grub?

• BizTalk 2009 - The Community ODBC Adapter: Installation

  I have previsouly detailed the installation of MySQL, the configuration of MySQL and the installation of the ODBC Data Connector for MySQL.  The reason I needed to install and configure these servers was to provide a test environment for a BizTalk Server 2009 solution I am working on where BizTalk will be querying and populating a MySQL database. To do this I then needed to install and add the Community ODBC adapter from Two Connect: "The Community BizTalk Adapter for ODBC is based on the code that was first made available on GotDotNet a few years ago. TwoConnect has refreshed this code, added an installer, and tested it against the latest BizTalk editions. We are releasing the updates back to the BizTalk developer, user and partner community as part of our ongoing community intitiatives. This is the second adapter package that TwoConnect makes available to the community after the very succesful release of the BizTalk WSE 3 adapter a couple of years ago. This adapter is useful in all ODBC based integration scenarios. The following are the new features added and fixes made to the old code base on GotDotNet." Detailed below are the installation instructions for this adapter.  Downloading and running the installer will load up the splash screen. Next you need to select the installation location for the adapter. You then need to confirm the installation following which you will be shown the installation progress. Assuming all has gone well you should see the installation complete screen. Once the installation has completed successfully you will then need to add the adapter to your BizTalk Server.  To do this open the BizTalk Administration console, expand the Platform Settings and right click on Adapters then select New\Adapter. You should then be able to select the ODBC adapter and choose the display name for the adapter. This adapter will then be shown in the BizTalk Administration console. The first half covers using local, remote and persistent cache stores inside the solution, including the .NET MemoryCache, NCache Express, AppFabric Caching, memcached, Azure Table Storage and local disk stores. The second half covers caching outside the solution in HTTP clients and proxies, and how to set up ASP.NET WebForms, MVC, Web API and WCF projects to use HTTP validation and expiration caching.   The course takes a hands-on approach, starting with a distributed solution that has no caching, analysing key points which can benefit from caching, and adding different types of cache. At the end of the course I run through a set of before and after performance tests, stressing the solution under load. Without caching and with 60 concurrent users the page response time maxes out at 18 seconds - with caching that falls to 2 seconds, so it's a huge improvement from very little effort. I’d be glad to hear feedback if you watch the course, especially if it’s as positive as my editor’s.

• HP DL160 vs DL360 for virtualization

  Hi, We're planning to consolidate our infrastructure (a dozen servers). We'll buy two or three identical new servers who will be setup as a XenServer pool. Load balancing and HA tools will monitor the pool and vMotion VMs in case of failure/overload. I know that the DL100 series of HP servers is cheaper than the DL300 serie (in every sense of the word). As we don't need local storage (we have a SAN) and can live with a temporary down server (provided that Xen Server HA tools work as advertized), what are the downsides going with the DL100 serie ? • printable PHP manual - 'all but the Function Reference section'

  My Motivation I find it easier to learn things by reading 'offline'. I'd like to lean back and read the narrative part of a paper version of the official php manual. My Scuppered Plan My plan was to download the manual, print all but the Function Reference section and then read it. I have downloaded the "Single HTML file" version of the manual from the php.net download page. (That version did not contain any images, so I patched-in the ones from the Many HTML files version with no problem.) My plan was to open that "Single HTML file" in an HTML editor, delete the Function Reference section then print it out. Unfortunately, although I have tried three different editors, I have not been able to successfully load-up that massive html file to be able to edit it. Its about (~40MB). I started to look into the phpdoc framework with a view to rendering my own html docs from the source...but that's a steep learning curve for a newby..and is a last resort. I would use a file splitter, but they tend to split files crudely with no regard for html/xml/xhtml sematics. So the question is... Does anyone know know where you can download the php manual in a version that is a kind of half-way house between the 'Single HTML file' and the 'Many HTML files'? Ideally with the docs split into 3 parts: File 1 - stuff before the function reference File 2 - function reference File 3 - stuff after the function reference Or Can you suggest any editors/tools will enable me to split up this file myself?

There is small tray in Brother Printer manin tray where i can put any samll paper and then move the clamps so that it fits the paper. But when i give print command the printer tries to pick up paper but is unable to do so. Then it gave paper light means it can't load the paper. What should i do

  Are you kidding me? What a load of nutritional CRAP. Don’t buy this product. Just don’t do it. They are just like Wheaties with more sugar and fat. Awesome just what we need more sugar!! Okay now I’m not against carbs… I’m really not. Being a cyclist I realize the importance of carbohydrates in the diet… but let’s be realistic here. Even though the commercials for Wheaties Fuel say they are for athletes you know that what General Mills is really hoping for is that kids will see Payton Manning, Albert Pujols and KG and buy this cereal and eat a ton of it for breakfast. Sad, really. I’ve watched all the videos and read all the propaganda on the Wheaties Fuel web site and no where do they talk about why they added sugar and fat the original Wheaties. There is a lot of double-speak by Dr. Ivy about “understanding the needs of athletes.” I had to laugh – in one of the videos Dr. Ivy even says that he thinks the "new Wheaties will have even more fiber! Wrong! My bad... there is 5g of fiber not 3g per serving. Just  Way more sugar. • Apache mod_jk replacing mod_rewrite rules

  We have a slightly complex Apache 2.2 setup in front of a Tomcat 6.0 instance. The main Tomcat webapp is deployed in: /opt/tomcat/webapps/ROOT But we also have static content that we update semi-regularly. We didn't want to force a new build and deploy of the webapp, so that's stored separately in folders like: /opt/tomcat/webapps/css /opt/tomcat/webapps/foo /opt/tomcat/webapps/bar To handle this from Apache, we use mod_rewrite and rules look something like the following: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f RewriteRule ^/css/(.*)$ - [L] RewriteCond ROOT/%{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f RewriteRule ^/css/(.*)$ ROOT/$1 [L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f RewriteRule ^(.*)\.(jpg|png|html|js)$ - [L] RewriteCond ROOT/%{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f RewriteRule ^(.*)\.(jpg|png|html|js)$ - [L] RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ http://localhost:8080/$1 [P,L] ProxyPassReverse / http://localhost:8080/ I now think I might want to start using mod_jk and I have two questions: Is it even worth using mod_jk? I don't need load balancing. Is it even possible to handle the cases I outlined where the static content is referenced as "http://www.example.com/css/foo.css", but we don't know if it's located in the Tomcat webapp or in one of the static folders.

• Squid + Dans Guardian (simple configuration)

  I just built a new proxy server and compiled the latest versions of squid and dansguardian. We use basic authentication to select what users are allowed outside of our network. It seems squid is working just fine and accepts my username and password and lets me out. But if i connect to dans guardian, it prompts for username and password and then displays a message saying my username is not allowed to access the internet. Its pulling my username for the error message so i know it knows who i am. The part i get confused on is i thought that part was handled all by squid, and squid is working flawlessly. Can someone please double check my config files and tell me if i'm missing something or there is some new option i must set to get this to work. dansguardian.conf # Web Access Denied Reporting (does not affect logging) # # -1 = log, but do not block - Stealth mode # 0 = just say 'Access Denied' # 1 = report why but not what denied phrase # 2 = report fully # 3 = use HTML template file (accessdeniedaddress ignored) - recommended # reportinglevel = 3 # Language dir where languages are stored for internationalisation. # The HTML template within this dir is only used when reportinglevel # is set to 3. • Why aren't connections released by the tomcat AJP connector

  I have here a jboss with a web application. The tomcat is configured to use the ajp connector. Incoming connections are tunneled via an apache reverse proxy to the connector. Now I recognized that under heavy load the connector keeps a bunch of connections in "keep alive" mode for eternity and doesn't release them any more. With the normal HTTP connector the app did well, but now with the ajp connector we have regular app stallments. Can someone give me some advice where to start to look to resolve this issue? Why does the connector not release the connection again after idling for 300 secs? thanks, chris

• Multiple computers on Ubuntu One

  I have added files from 4 computers to Ubuntu One. One computer failed. What happens to the files that I uploaded. Are they still on Ubuntu One? How come when I upload a file from computer A, computer B with the same Ubuntu One account does not sync and load that file into computer B - That has created this question.. what happens to files from computers from which I uploaded documents when those computers are no longer active or failed, or no longer have Ubuntu One on that computer from which the files were uploaded... Have I lost the files? The followup question is how come files from Computer A uploaded to Ubuntu One don't sync to Computer B. That is a related question. I need to shut down a computer, reformat the hard drive and install Linux on the entire harddrive instead of a dual boot with Windows XP as I am going to use Virtual Machines instead.. what happens to the files from the Windows Dual Boot that were uploaded to Ubuntu One? Are they removed from Ubuntu One and then have I lost those files if I don't backup to another service first.

  I've been working through this tutorial about drawing triangles with SlimDX, and while it works, I've been trying to structure my program differently than in the tutorial. The tutorial just has everything in the main method, I'm trying to separate components into their own classes. But I'm not sure where certain components belong: namely, contexts and shaders. The tutorial (as it's just rendering one triangle) has one device, one swapchain, one device context and one set of shaders. intuition says that there is only one device/swapchain for one game, but with contexts I don't know. I made a Triangle class and put the vertex stuff in there. Should it also create a context? Should it load its own shaders? Or should I pass some global context and shaders to the triangle class when it is constructed? Or pass the shaders and construct a new context? I'm just getting started with 3D programming, so in addition to answering this question, if anyone knows of a tutorial or article or something about the larger-scale structure of a game, I'd be interested in seeing that as well.

  I have a HP laptop with support for 3 USB 2.0 ports. I also have a clean 320Gb WD USB 2.0 drive. The HP can boot from USB (Bios options). I used the install disk (XP SP3 bootable) and after a few stutters, was actually able to load up a partition on the 320Gb drive with Windows. I cannot consistently get the system to boot up off the USB drive. I am able to drop Ubuntu on that same WD drive and boot up. I can even get Grub2 on Ubuntu to recognize the Win OS. But booting the Win OS is an impossible task. What can I do differently - if anything?

• How can I get data off of a Corsair SSD?

  My Corsair SSD won't work and I have some critical data on it that I didn't back up (I needed to create a copy of my mechanical storage device, just forgot). The drive isn't detected by the OS or BIOS. I also tried it on another system, but all that happened was the OS failed to load (my guess was that it knew the drive was there, just couldn't read it). I tried powering it on without the data cable for a bit of time to see if it'd work again, but it didn't. Any ideas of how I can get the data off of this drive without having to send it in?

I'm putting together a proposal that we use reverse proxy servers to isolate the origin servers, provide SSL termination and (when possible) provide load balancing. For much of our setup, I'm sure it will work nicely, but we do have a few lesser-known proprietary applications that may need special treatment when we move forward with reverse-proxying. What kinds of traps tend to cause problems when moving an origin server from being on the front lines to being behind a proxy? (For example, I can imagine problems if an application needed to know the IP address of incoming requests.)

• 64bit or 32bit Linux system?

  I have a server that has 4GB of RAM. On it, I have installation of 32bit Slackware Linux 12.1. Of course, it is not using all of 4GB of RAM. I'd soon like to increase the RAM to 8GB, and am looking for a way for the system to use it. The system is used as a database server and is under high load during the day. AFAICT, I have two options: stay with 32bit and rebuild the kernel and lose some performance. Or go with 64bit and reinstall everything. Looking at 64bit versions of Slackware, I could run -current or Slamd64. Now, on to the questions: Should I stay with 32bit or go with 64bit? If I go 64bit, should I use -current or Slamd64? P.S. I hope to get answers from someone actually using any of these configurations in production, not just copy/paste something I could find myself via Google.

  The properties service (configured in properties-service.xml) in JBoss application server lets you specify external .properties files that are loaded and can then be accessed as system properties from the deployed applications. (See here http://community.jboss.org/wiki/PropertiesService for more info...) Is it also possible to load config files in the .xml format instead of .properties? I know it is possible for certain given configs like for example the mail-service.xml and the jboss-log4j.xml... But they are both loaded directly by JBoss, and not via the properties service.

• DirectX works for 64-bit but not 32-bit

  I'm trying to play a game (Civilization 5) which was previously working but no longer. I believe I've narrowed it down to a DirectX issue because I get an error running dxdiag.exe in 32 bit mode. My goal (at least I believe) is to get Direct3D Acceleration "Enabled" in dxdiag (as it is in 64 bit dxdiag). A very similar issue is here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-gaming/direct3d-acceleration-is-not-available-in-windows/4c345e6e-dc68-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5?page=1 The proposed answer, which looks very promising, doesn't seem to work for me. Like other users in that thread, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Direct3D\Drivers does not have a SoftwareOnly key to change. I even tried manually adding it as a string and dword, to no avail. I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M, and before you ask, yes I've tried updating (also uninstalling, reinstalling) my drivers. I've also tried doing the same with DirectX (and Civilization 5 for that matter). Been debugging for some 4+ hours now after a full day of work and I've run out of ideas. I'm hoping somebody knows the solution here! :) Here's what I see when I open dxdiag: DxDiag has detected that there mgiht have been a problem accessing Direct3D the last time this program was used.
