• Spotlight on GlassFish 4.1: #6 Java API for WebSocket 1.1

  'Spotlight on GlassFish 4.1' is a series of posts that highlights specific enhancements of the upcoming GlassFish 4.1 release. It could be a new feature, a fix, a behavior change, a tip, etc. #6 Java API for WebSocket 1.1 JSR 356 (Java API for WebSocket) has recently passed the Maintenance Release ballot, this Maintenance Release fixes an important issue when Java SE 8 Lambdas are used (see here). GlassFish 4.1 will include an updated version of Tyrus (JSR 356 Reference Implementation) to bring the WebSocket API level to the latest version of the specification, i.e. WebSocket API for Java 1.1. It should be mentioned that the Tyrus version included in GlassFish 4.1 also brings additional features. You could read about the PHP features added to the NetBeans 7.3 release here on the blog, but the main features added or improved are: Parsers for Namespaced Annotations (Symfony 2, Doctrine 2, etc.), Basic Composer Integration (Dependency Manager for PHP), Twig Code Completion (with documentation), Smarty Braces Matching for Related Tags, Smarty Parser Errors of Unmatched Tags. • RTF template migration in BIP

  When you are creating BI template through application the RTF template information will stored in XDO_LOBS table.Column LOB_CODE will store the template short code,ie the link between the template and lob. When you migrate the template through java oracle.apps.xdo.oa.util.XDOLoader make sure the rtf file name and template short code are same.Otherwise the rtf will not get attached. Eg:  Source Instance Template Short Code : XXCUST_TEMPLATE RTF Name: XXCUST_TEMPLATE_1.rtf When you migrate the above details through  XDOLoader the rtf will not get attached to template in destination instance.So make sure RTF Name should be XXCUST_TEMPLATE.

• Need to Determine the Engine Status?

  If you need to establish the status of the engine, begin with this SQL: select status, engine, engine_version,fore_column_name from dm.forecast_history The status of an engine run is stored in the FORECAST_HISTORY table, in the “status” field.  We can also find in that table the FORE_COLUMN_NAME field. This field includes the name of the column in SALES_DATA in which the relevant forecast is stored. Here are the possible statuses: -1, -2 : The engine failed in the initialization phase.  Which means, before the engine manager created the engines.  0 : The engine stopped in the optimization phase.  Which means, after the engines were created.  1: The engine finished the run successfully.  2: Forecast was never calculated for the relevant column that is mentioned in FORE_COLUMN_NAME.

• Removal of the JDBC-ODBC Bridge from Java SE 8 JDK

  Starting with Java SE 8, the JDBC-ODBC Bridge will no longer be included with the JDK. The JDBC-ODBC Bridge has always been considered transitional and a non-supported product[1] that was only provided with select JDK bundles and not included with the JRE. The JDBC-ODBC bridge provides limited support for JDBC 2.0 and does not support more recent versions of the JDBC specification. I would recommend that you use a JDBC driver provided by the vendor of your database or a commercial JDBC Driver instead of the JDBC-ODBC Bridge. • Consultant in a firm that doesn't understand the tech!

  I got the job as a Consultant in a firm that has 3 other programmers. My job is to rewrite all the old system in Java, Spring etc but the staff programmers only know perl and the manager does not know any programming. I am trying to get them to understand that I have 6 projects to rewrite here but no one has design docs or spec. the staff programmers never had to write any documents. Plus I cant get the manager to understand the new java tech stuff.. he keeps asking some of the staff for views on things but the staff don't know it or understand it. Where do I go from here to make the manager understand that the staff programmers or someone has to write a design document so I know what to build. or if I have to write the documents how do I get the information?

• Associating Palettes with View TopComponents

  A side effect of changes in NetBeans Platform 7.1 in the NetBeans window system is that palettes can now be created for view TopComponents. • Now you can design ADF applications that look like Fusion Apps

  One possible failure point in ADF applications (and I’ve seen happen) is getting Web designers to build the UI without any knowledge of what ADF does.  The resulting design may look pretty but might be virtually impossible to implement using ADF. To help address this Oracle have released a set of Visio templates which help guide you in “Fusion”/ADF look and feel.  I’ve been lucky enough to have some of our usability teams mock up these templates for some ADF projects I’ve been working on and they are a great help in conceptualising the final applications. • JavaFX 2.1.1 Documentation

  JavaFX 2.1.1 released on June 12, and few documents were updated on the docs.oracle.com/javafx website. Besides a new set of release documentation, the Concurrency in JavaFX article was updated with a discussion of how to cancel a task, with a code sample to illustrate that. A new section describes the WorkerStateEvent class and how to use the convenience methods such as cancelled, failed, running, scheduled, and succeeded, which are invoked when the Worker implementation state changes. Other documents were updated to reflect minor bug fixes, many of them contributed by JavaFX readers using the feedback alias in the sidebar of all of our documentation. Yes, we do respond and pay attention to what you say and at least try to point you in the right direction if we can't solve a problem you're having with a tutorial. We appreciate your feedback!

• OpenWonderland goes to Europe

  Past my day job, I also have the privilege of being Vice President and Member of the Board of the OpenWonderland Foundation (Formerly Project Wonderland for ex-Sun folks). It's great to see the progress Wonderland is making as the platform-of-choice for open source collaborative 3-D virtual worlds built in Java. The upcoming and first european IE Summit in Madrid will show a number of projects and innovations for virtual and game-based learning. I also dropped Ultan a note after learning about the Gamification of Oracle Apps to see if collaborating with kids and schools is an area we can work together on to improve kids engagement and learning experiences online.
