• 32 bit depth jpg images problem in IE when referenced locally

  We have an webbapplication that takes an image that will be uploaded and resized. The resize-library we used saved all pictures with 32-bit depth whatever the depth was before. We have an online client that can view the pictures via an html-file and all is fine there. All pictures are shown correctly. The problem: We also have an vb-winform application that download the pictures and show them in an html-file locally in an webbrowser control. But here all pictures are rejected (not rendered), just the red cross. If we create an static html-file with img-tags in them locally, its the same. All pictures that has 32-bits depth are shown as red crosses. If we resave the pictures with 24-bits depth it magically works again. So ofcourse that was our "workaround", let the resize-library save all pictures with 24-bits depth instead. Summary: 32-bits jpg files shows correct in IE when online but not when referenced locally in a local html-file. (This is true for IE8 on both winxp and windows7). The same local html-file opened in mozilla showed OK. Question: I have googled this a lot but has not found anything about this "problem". Is this a bug in IE8?

• c# (wcf) architecture file and directory structure (and instantiation)

  Hello and thanks for any assistance. I have a wcf service that I'm trying to properly modularize. I'm interested in finding out if there is a better way or implementing the file and directory structure along with instanciatation, is there a more appropriate way of abstraction that I may be missing? Is this the best approach? especially if performance and the ability to handle thousands of simultanious request?   Hello, Say i have 5 tables, tblBlogs tblBlogPosts tblBlogPostComment tblUser tblBlogMember BlogId BlogPostsId BlogPostCommentId UserId BlogMemberId BlogTitle BlogId CommentText FirstName UserId PostTitle BlogPostsId BlogId BlogMemberId Now i want to retrieve only those blogs and posts for which blogMember has actually commented. So in short, how do i write this plain old sql :- Select b.BlogTitle, bp.PostTitle, bpc.CommentText from tblBlogs b Inner join tblBlogPosts bp on b.BlogId = bp.BlogId Inner Join tblBlogPostComment bpc on bp.BlogPostsId = bpc.BlogPostsId Inner Join tblBlogMember bm On bpc.BlogMemberId = bm.BlogMemberId Where bm.UserId = 1; As you can see, everything is Inner join, so only that row will be retrieved for which the user has commented on some post of some blog. So, suppose he has joined 3 blogs whose ids are 1,2,3 (The blogs which user has joined are in tblBlogMembers) but the user has only commented in blog 2 (of say BlogPostId = 1). So that row will be retrieved and 1,3 won't as it is Inner Join. How do i write this kind of query in jpql? In jpql, we can only write simple queries like say :- Select bm.blogId from tblBlogMember Where bm.UserId = objUser; Where objUser is supplied using :- em.find(User.class,1); Thus once we get all blogs(Here blogId represents a blog object) which user has joined, we can loop through and do all fancy things. But i don't want to fall in this looping business and write all this things in my java code. Instead, i want to leave that for database engine to do. So, how do i write the above plain sql into jpql? and what type of object the jpql query will return? because i am only selecting few fields from all table. In which class should i typecast the result to? I think i posted my requirement correctly, if i am not clear please let me know. Thanks in advance :).

• SSL certificate exception problem in Firefox

  Hi there, and thanks in advance for your help or any tip that could get me out of here. I work on a JEE app with a JBoss server and an Apache. I'm not really familiar with SSL connections and certificates, I understand the basic, but I have to deal with it. So on my local configuration (localhost) I have my connection certificate configured on JBoss and Apache, and a USER_DEV.P12 file, which I import in my certificates in Firefox. I have the same configuration on a distant test server (test-server), and a USER_TEST.P12 which I also import in Firefox. When I access https://localhost/ or https://test-server/ Firefox asks me to add an exception, which is normal. After that, I select the appropriated user certificate, and can use my application normally. But for the second (let's say https://test-server/), Firefox rises me a sec_error_reused_issuer_and_serial error. Of course I googled it and founded the Mozilla help, So when I delete the "server" in my certificate manager, I can access again my second domain, but the same problem occurs for the first one. To shorten the problem, my 2 client/server certificate couples are OK but I can't have 2 certificate exceptions at the same time in Firefox for my 2 different servers/users, even though the names, server address, and MD5 are different. I notified the serial is the same (01), but it's working on my colleague's computer. So am I doing something wrong? Do I have to deal with it manually each time (or with Firefox profiles)?   I have been looking everywhere how to play a $#@&! rington/alarm sound in android. I press a button and I want to play a rington/alarm sound. I could not find a easy, strsight forward sample... YES! I already looked at Alarm clock source code... but it is not straight forward and I cannot compile it neither. • IRC Server configuration possibilities

  I need to know a couple of things, concerning IRC servers that I couldnt directly find out over google (or werent clear enough for me to be sure if it actually works) I'm working at a larger community site, and wanted to deliver an in-page chat. Since it would be a nice feature to let people access it from outside too, over their own clients, I tought implementing an IRC Server would be the best solution (probably dedicated, I'll have to teach myself a couple of things for that) I plan to include a Web-based IRC client over an APE Client / Server. The problem is, I want to strip down the user rights, to disallow many functionalities that IRC would offer: Change of nicknames: The user logs in over the Page login, and I'll automatically create an IRC auth for this user with that password. So basically, he would connect to the IRC client over a button. And after connecting, he shouldnt be able to change his nickname at all Creating channels: I want the possibility to create channels, but not from 'normal' users. Basically, I would prefer to set up basic channels that are public, and if a user really creates an own channel, that one should be private and via invitation (is that possible?) Private conversations: private conversations should be filtered out from the allaround IRC client, into separate 'in-browser-windows' that I create over JS. I guess I just have to filter the stuff coming from IRC - or is there a better solution to that? Only 'registered' users have access: Like I said, if someone registers on the page, I would like to create an IRC 'account' for him. Users that arent registered on the page, cant access the IRC server at all (or get thrown out). Mainly to avoid spammers or bots from outside. Is this stuff solvable over IRC? I've read some FAQ's and Instructions for IRC OP's and servers, but I couldnt find a clear answer - it seems that everyone can do pretty much everything - I would like to configure it in a way that user possibilities are more cut down. Basically, giving users the possibility to chat, but not more. So the Question basically is, how possible / solvable this issues are allaround, or if I have to find other solutions for this.

  Hi, How does one handle ties when ranking results in a mysql query? I've simplified the table names and columns in this example, but it should illustrate my problem: SET @rank=0; SELECT student_names.students, @rank := @rank +1 AS rank, scores.grades FROM student_names LEFT JOIN scores ON student_names.students = scores.students ORDER BY scores.grades DESC So imagine the the above query produces: Students Rank Grades Al 1 90 Amy 2 90 George 3 78 Bob 4 73 Mary 5 NULL William 6 NULL Even though Al and Amy have the same grade, one is ranked higher than the other. Amy got ripped-off. How can I make it so that Amy and Al have the same ranking, so that they both have a rank of 1. Also, William and Mary didn't take the test. They bagged class and were smoking in the boy's room. They should be tied for last place. The correct ranking should be: Students Rank Grades Al 1 90 Amy 1 90 George 3 78 Bob 4 73 Mary 5 NULL William 5 NULL If anyone has any advice, please let me know. Thank you! -Laxmidi

• Quadratic Bezier Curve: Calculate Tangent

  I have a quadratic bezier curve and I want to calculate the slope of the tangent in a given point. For example, let it be the middlepoint of the quadratic bezier curve, therefore t=0.5 (please see the link below for a picture of this). I've calculated the first derivative of the formula for the quadratic bezier curve; however I get 400 as value for the slope, though it should be 0. Maybe I'm using the first derivative in a wrong way? I know I could also calculate the tangents using trigonometric functions; however I'd like to do it using the first derivative, shouldn't this be possible? Thanks for any hint! For clarification / please note: I'm interested in a general way to get the slope in a arbitrary given point on a quadratic bezier curve, not only to get the tangent in the start- and end point. • MonoDevelop 2.8.2: Build failed. Illegal characters in path

  I have just installed MonoDevelop 2.8.2. After opening a new solution named test I attempted to run the project. I push f5 and all I see is a "Build failed. Illegal characters in path" error in the bottom left. I open up the Error List and see no errors. I have done some searching and only find solutions pertaining to projects that are beyond the scope of just the pre-generated code. This is the code: using System; namespace Test { class MainClass { public static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine("Hello World!"); } } } I have tried to uninstall/reinstall, cut out any spaces in the path to the program or the solution, and even opened VS2010 and just copy pasted that code over. I've looked over my options under tools, solution options under project, and the project's options. I am running MD 2.8.2 with GTK# and Microsoft's .NET runtime. Let me know if you need anymore information. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for your time!

  i am developing an application in wpf using MVVM design pattern. i have a listbox when an item is slected then a dialog is open having the same record in editable mode. this dialog is binded with the selected item of the list. i have apply the validation rule for textbox using IDataErrorInfo. when the user update a record on dialogbox then at every key press, the selected record in listbox is also changed. if the user press save button then i submit changes to database. but if user click cancel button then i do not submit changes to database but the list box is updated with the current updation in GUI. when i refresh the list then old value appears again. My requirement is to update the listbox only when the user hit the save button but not on every key press on dialog box. I first fill the generic list with the linq to sql classes then bind the listbox with it. Please let me know what i have to do. Thanks in advance

• How do I best display CheckBoxes in SQL Server Reporting Services?

  One of the many quirks of Reporting Services we've run across is the complete and utter lack of a CheckBox control or even something remotely similar. We have a form that should appear automatically filled out based on information pulled from a database. We have several bit datatype fields. Printing out "True" or "False" just looks silly, as this is supposed to look like a form that has been auto-filled out, so we want to have a series of checkboxes and labels that are either checked or unchecked. We are running SSRS 2005 but I'm not aware of SSRS 2008 having added a CheckBox control. Even if it did, we'd need to have an alternative for the time being. The best we've found so far is: use Wingdings use images use text boxes with borders and print a blank/space or a capital X All three approaches require IIF expression shenanigans. The Wingdings approach seemed to work acceptably, and was the most aesthetically pleasing except that for whatever reason it didn't always print correctly. More importantly, PDF exports, also for whatever reason, converted all fonts (generally) to Arial and so we got funky letters instead of the Windings dingbats. Images, being a pixel-based raster, don't do so well when printed along side vector stuff like text. Unless handled carefully, they tend to stretch, pixelate, and do other unprofessional looking things. While these methods do work (some with limitations as mentioned above) none of them are particularly elegant. Are we missing something obvious? Not so obvious? Does someone at Microsoft have a good reason why such a control was not provided in SSRS 2000, let alone 2 versions and 8 years later? This can't be the first time this issue has come up...

• Namespaces combined with TFS / Source Control explanation

  As an ISV company we slowly run into the "structure your code"-issue. We mainly develop using Visual Studio 2008 and 2010 RC. Languages c# and vb.net. We have our own Team Foundation Server and of course we use Source Control. When we started developing based on the .NET Framework, we also begun using Namespaces in a primitive way. With the time we 'became more mature', i mean we learned to use the namespaces and we structured the code more and more, but only in the solution scope. Now we have about 100 different projects and solutions in our Source Safe. We realized that many of our own classes are coded very redundant, i mean, a Write2Log, GetExtensionFromFilename or similar Function can be found between one and 20 times in all these projects and solutions. So my idea is: Creating one single kind of root folder in Source Control and start an own namespace-hierarchy-structure below this root, let's name it CompanyName. A Write2Log class would then be found in CompanyName.System.Logging. Whenever we create a new solution or project and we need a log function, we will 'namespace' that solution and place it accordingly somewhere below the CompanyName root folder. To have the logging functionality we then import (add) the existing project to the solution. Those 20+ projects/solutions with the write2log class can then be maintained in one single place. To my questions: - is that a good idea, the philosophy of namespaces and source control? - There must be a good book explaining the Namespaces combined with Source Control, yes? any hints/directions/tips? - how do you manage your 50+ projects?

• Asp.Net MVC 2: How exactly does a view model bind back to the model upon post back?

  Sorry for the length, but a picture is worth 1000 words: In ASP.NET MVC 2, the input form field "name" attribute must contain exactly the syntax below that you would use to reference the object in C# in order to bind it back to the object upon post back. That said, if you have an object like the following where it contains multiple Orders having multiple OrderLines, the names would look and work well like this (case sensitive): This works: Order[0].id Order[0].orderDate Order[0].Customer.name Order[0].Customer.Address Order[0].OrderLine[0].itemID // first order line Order[0].OrderLine[0].description Order[0].OrderLine[0].qty Order[0].OrderLine[0].price Order[0].OrderLine[1].itemID // second order line, same names Order[0].OrderLine[1].description Order[0].OrderLine[1].qty Order[0].OrderLine[1].price However we want to add order lines and remove order lines at the client browser. Apparently, the indexes must start at zero and contain every consecutive index number to N. The black belt ninja Phil Haack's blog entry here explains how to remove the [0] index, have duplicate names, and let MVC auto-enumerate duplicate names with the [0] notation. However, I have failed to get this to bind back using a nested object: This fails: Order.id // Duplicate names should enumerate at 0 .. N Order.orderDate Order.Customer.name Order.Customer.Address Order.OrderLine.itemID // And likewise for nested properties? Order.OrderLine.description Order.OrderLine.qty Order.OrderLine.price Order.OrderLine.itemID Order.OrderLine.description Order.OrderLine.qty Order.OrderLine.price I haven't found any advice out there yet that describes how this works for binding back nested ViewModels on post. Any links to existing code examples or strict examples on the exact names necessary to do nested binding with ILists? Steve Sanderson has code that does this sort of thing here, but we cannot seem to get this to bind back to nested objects. Anything not having the [0]..[n] AND being consecutive in numbering simply drops off of the return object. Any ideas?

• Unhandled Exception with c++ app on Visual Studio 2008 release build - occurs when returning from fu

  Hi, I have a (rather large) application that I have written in C++ and until recently it has been running fine outside of visual studio from the release build. However, now, whenever I run it it says "Unhandled exception at 0x77cf205b in myprog.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation writing location 0x45000200.", and leads me to "crtexe.c" at line 582 ("mainret = main(argc, argv, envp);") if I attempt to debug it. Note that this problem never shows if I run my debug executable outside of visual studio, or if I run my debug or release build within visual studio. It only happens when running the release build outside of visual studio. I have been through and put plenty of printfs and a couple of while(1)s in it to see when it actually crashed, and found that the access violation occurs at exactly the point that the value is returned from the function (I'm returning a pointer to an object). I don't fully understand why I would get an access violation at the point it returns, and it doesn't seem to matter what I'm returning as it still occurs when I return 0. The point it started crashing was when I added a function which does a lot of reading from a file using ifstream. I am opening the stream every time I attempt to read a new file and close it when I finish reading it. If I keep attempting to run it, it will run once in about 20 tries. It seems a lot more reliable if I run it off my pen drive (it seems to crash the first 3 or 4 times then run fine after that - maybe it's due to its slower read speed). • Java/BlackBerry build error overriding too many classes

  Hey everyone, Has anyone ever heard of overriding too many classes in Java? Perhaps this issue is just related to BlackBerry development, but I was wondering if it is an issue in Java, too. Let's say I have the following: LabelField lblTitle = new LabelField(title) { protected void paint(Graphics graphics) { graphics.setColor(0x00FFFFFF); graphics.clear(); super.paint(graphics); } }; LabelField lblSubTitle = new LabelField(releaseYear + ", " + rating) { protected void paint(Graphics graphics) { graphics.setColor(0x00FFFFFF); graphics.clear(); super.paint(graphics); } }; This code works. However, I've noticed that by overriding the paint() method multiple times in many different classes throughout my project, I receive the error: I/O Error: Cannot run program "jar": CreateProcess error=2, The system cannot find the file specified My only solution thus far is to clean up my GUI code...minimize it and reuse it. Perhaps its good that this happened so I can be less careless about creating GUI code all over my classes. Anyways, I was just wondering if anyone has heard of this before.   I've been led to believe that casting can, in certain circumstances, become a measurable hindrance on performance. This may be moreso the case when we start dealing with incoherent webs of nasty exception throwing\catching. Given that I wish to create more correct heuristics when it comes to programming, I've been prompted to ask this question to the .NET gurus out there: Is interface casting faster than class casting? • Is it possible to have a SeekBar's thumb image extend outside the bar?

  I have set negative paddings on my custom seekbar so that the round thumb image can go outside the bar, but the thumb isn't rendered out there, is there anyway to force the thumb to be drawn outside those bounds? Sorry guys, I'm new to Android development, and have been tasked with fixing an existing application. The problem is that we have a custom rounded looking track bar, which consists of two rounded 'end cap' images and a 1 px background that is tiled to create the seekbar. As far as I can tell there was never one image that could be set as the background of a normal SeekBar, which is why a custom one was created. The thumb is a circle and needs to 'fit' into the end caps - the three pieces of the bar are in a relative layout. Right now I'm kind of unclear as to how the 1 px background png gets stretched as the seekbar bg, otherwise I would try to tack on the two endcaps onto that drawable some how ... ? Please let me know if this was unclear and I'll try to post any followup info. Thanks in advance for any advice!! Oh, I'm using Android 2.1 if that's relevant to anyone's interests :)

  Hi everyone, I want to add class atttributes to a superclass dynamically. Furthermore, I want to create classes that inherit from this superclass dynamically, and the name of those subclasses should depend on user input. There is a superclass "Unit", to which I can add attributes at runtime. This already works. def add_attr (cls, name, value): setattr(cls, name, value) class Unit(object): pass class Archer(Unit): pass myArcher = Archer() add_attr(Unit, 'strength', 5) print "Strenght ofmyarcher: " + str(myArcher.strength) Archer.strength = 2 print "Strenght ofmyarcher: " + str(myArcher.strength) This leads to the desired output: Strenght ofmyarcher: 5 Strenght ofmyarcher: 2 But now I don't want to predefine the subclass Archer, but I'd rather let the user decide how to call this subclass. I've tried something like this: class Meta(type, subclassname): def __new__(cls, subclassname, bases, dct): return type.__new__(cls, subclassname, Unit, dct) factory = Meta() factory.__new__("Soldier") but no luck. I guess I haven't really understood what new does here. What I want as a result here is class Soldier(Unit): pass being created by the factory. • setAttribute, onClick and cross browser compatability...

  I have read a number of posts about this but none with any solid answer. Here is my code: // button creation onew = document.createElement('input'); onew.setAttribute("type", "button"); onew.setAttribute("value", "hosts"); onew.onclick = function(){fnDisplay_Computers("'" + alines[i] + "'"); }; // ie onew.setAttribute("onclick", "fnDisplay_Computers('" + alines[i] + "')"); // mozilla odiv.appendChild(onew); Now, the setAttribute() method (with the mozilla comment) works fine in mozilla but only if it comes AFTER the line above it. So in other words it seems to just default to whichever gets set last. The .onclick method (with the ie comment) does not work in either case, am I using it incorrectly? Either way I can't find a way to make this work at all in IE, let alone in both. I did change the function call when using the .onclick method and it worked fine using just a simple call to an alert function which is why I believe my syntax is incorrect. Long story short, I can't get the onclick parameter to work consistently between IE/Mozilla. -- Nicholas

• Evolutionary Algorithms: Optimal Repopulation Breakdowns

  It's really all in the title, but here's a breakdown for anyone who is interested in Evolutionary Algorithms: In an EA, the basic premise is that you randomly generate a certain number of organisms (which are really just sets of parameters), run them against a problem, and then let the top performers survive. You then repopulate with a combination of crossbreeds of the survivors, mutations of the survivors, and also a certain number of new random organisms. Do that several thousand times, and efficient organisms arise. Some people also do things like introduce multiple "islands" of organisms, which are seperate populations that are allowed to crossbreed once in awhile. So, my question is: what are the optimal repopulation percentages? I have been keeping the top 10% performers, and repopulating with 30% crossbreeds and 30% mutations. The remaining 30% is for new organisms. I have also tried out the multiple island theory, and I'm interested in your results on that as well. It is not lost on me that this is exactly the type of problem an EA could solve. Are you aware of anyone trying that? Thanks in advance!

• How can I terminate a system command with alarm in Perl?

  I am running the below code snippet on Windows. The server starts listening continuously after reading from client. I want to terminate this command after a time period. If I use alarm() function call within main.pl, then it terminates the whole Perl program (here main.pl), so I called this system command by placing it in a separate Perl file and calling this Perl file (alarm.pl) in the original Perl File using the system command. But in this way I was unable to take the output of this system() call neither in the original Perl File nor in called one Perl File. • SVN checkout browser

  I've been looking all over for a SVN browser. Now I'm not talking about anything like WebSVN or TRAC, I don't want to browse the repository; I want to browse the checkout. I'm looking for a program that lets me browse the checkout (working copy) and shows me the info I'd normally need to SSH for. So I could mark specific files or folders for some commit button, or see the status, or view a diff between the working and a prev version. Basically a web GUI for a svn checkout. A [windows] program that can let you work on a remote checkout as if it were local would also work. Currently I have a checkout on my server running under dev.mysite.com. I log in via ftp and edit and upload the files. I also keep SSH open so I can do a svn st to see what files I've worked on and to commit changes. I want to work on the files on the same environment so I can't simply use a local checkout. But I don't want to need to work via SSH. Are there any apps such as I described? Like a repo browser but for checkouts to do commits. Like WebTortoiseSVN or such. Thanks
