  • I read 3 pages of a JQuery book and here's my reaction and question

    My jQuery reaction to the language's flexible "selectors" is probably rooted in this experience: I once had managed a project where a developer constructed a web page that was used by users to provide very flexible search parameters for a search screen using dynamic sql string building based on the user's specified search parameter. The resulting queries were usually very complicated and involved joins to many tables. One of the options that the user had was to choose from one of 3 an options. Depending on the user's choice for this option, the resulting SQL would need to query a different set of database columns. For example, if choice option "A" were selected, the resulting database columns queried would be prefixed with "A_"; if option "B" were selected, he resulting database columns queried would be prefixed with "B_" and so on. The developer choice to write all the complete SQL assuming that the user selected, for example, option "A" and therefore first constructed SQLs of this type: SQL = "SELECT A_COL1, A_COL2, A_COL3 FROM TABLE ..." and then after constructing one of a million possible variations on the Query From Hell, did something like this: If UserOption = "B" then SQL = SQL.Replace("A_","B_") 'replace everywhere End if He insisted that this was the easiest was to code it, and while I understood that, I was concerned about maintenance of this code. You see, this worked for a while, but as the search options grew and the database columns evolved, the various "REPLACE small substring" with another small substring had unexpected consequences when applied to an evolving database and new search options. My feeling is that code should be written as much as possible such that you can add to it without fear of breaking what is already there. I feel a better approach, though a bit more work, would have been to write a function to return the appropriate target column based on a common set name and the user selected option. OK, so what does this have to do with jQuery selectors? Are the ultra flexible JQuery selectors kind of like perform a "replace all" on a SQL string? Handy as hell but potentially creating a maintenance nightmare?

  • Data Warehouse: Modelling a future schedule

    I'm creating a DW that will contain data on financial securities such as bonds and loans. These securities are associated with payment schedules. For example, a bond could pay quarterly, while a mortage would usually pay monthly (sometimes biweekly). The payment schedule is created when the security is traded and, in the majority of cases, will remain unchanged. However, the design would need to accomodate those cases where it does change. I'm currently attempting to model this data and I'm having difficulty coming up with a workable design. One of the most commonly queried fields is "next payment date". Users often want to know when a security will pay next. Therefore, I want to make it as easy as possible for them to get the next payment date and amount for each security. Also, users often run historical queries in which case they'd want the next payment date and amount as of a specific point in time. For example, they may want to look back at 1/31/09 and query the next payment dates (which would usually be in February 2009 for mortgages). It's also common that they want to query a security's entire payment schedule, which might consist of 360 records (30 year mortgage x 12 payments/year). Since the next payment date and amount would be changing each month or even biweekly, these fields wouldn't seem to fit into a slow-changing dimension very well. It would probably make more sense to use a fact table, but I'm unsure of how to model it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    I have a table, where I need to do a case insensitive search on a text field. If I run this query in LinqPad directly on my database, it works as expected Table.Where(tbl => tbl.Title.Contains("StringWithAnyCase")) // also, adding in the same constraints I'm using in my repository works in LinqPad // Table.Where(tbl => tbl.Title.Contains("StringWithAnyCase") && tbl.IsActive == true) In my application, I've got a repository which exposes IQueryable objects which does some initial filtering and it looks like this var dc = new MyDataContext(); public IQueryable<Table> GetAllTables() { var ret = dc.Tables.Where(t => t.IsActive == true); return ret; } In the controller (its an MVC app) I use code like this in an attempt to mimic the LinqPad query: var rpo = new RepositoryOfTable(); var tables = rpo.GetAllTables(); // for some reason, this does a CASE SENSITIVE search which is NOT what I want. tables = tables.Where(tbl => tbl.Title.Contains("StringWithAnyCase"); return View(tables); The column is defiend as an nvarchar(50) in SQL Server 2008. Any help or guidance is greatly appreciated!

Don't get me wrong grammers are great for telling the speech recognition exactly what words / phrases to look out for, however what if I want it to recognise something i've not given it a heads up about? Or I want to parse a phrase which is half pre-determined command name and half random words? For example.. Scenario A - I say "Google [Oil Spill]" and I want it to open Google with search results for the term in brackets which could be anything. Scenario B - I say "Locate [Manchester]" and I want it to search for Manchester in Google Maps or anything else non pre-determined I want it to know that 'Google' and 'Locate' are commands and what comes after it are parameters (and could be anything). Question : Does anyone know how to mix the use of pre-determined grammers (words the speech recognition should recognise) and words not in its pre-determined grammer?     I'm having trouble binding a ComboBox to a foreign key in WPF using Linq To SQL. It works fine when displaying records, but if I change the selection on the ComboBox, that change does not seem to affect the property to which it is bound. My SQL Server Compact file has three tables: Players (PK is PlayerID), Events (PK is EventID), and Matches (PK is MatchID). Matches has FKs for the the other two, so that a match is associated with a player and an event. My window for editing a match uses a ComboBox to select the Event, and the ItemsSource is set to the result of a LINQ query to pull all of the Events. And of course the user should be able to select the Event based on EventName, not EventID. Here's the XAML: <ComboBox x:Name="cboEvent" DisplayMemberPath="EventName" SelectedValuePath="EventID" SelectedValue="{Binding Path=EventID, UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged}" /> And some code-behind from the Loaded event handler: var evt = from ev in db.Events orderby ev.EventName select ev; cboEvent.ItemsSource = evt.ToList(); var mtch = from m in db.Matches where m.PlayerID == ((Player)playerView.CurrentItem).PlayerID select m; matchView = (CollectionView)CollectionViewSource.GetDefaultView(mtch); this.DataContext = matchView; When displaying matches, this works fine--I can navigate from one match to the next and the EventName is shown correctly. However, if I select a new Event via this ComboBox, the CurrentItem of the CollectionView doesn't seem to change. I feel like I'm missing something stupid! Note: the Player is selected via a ListBox, and that selection filters the matches displayed--this seems to be working fine, so I didn't include that code. That is the reason for the "PlayerID" reference in the LINQ query

The only way it worked was to not use the methods, declare the commands for the connection and use different variables for the connection and the statement. I thought that if i close the Connecion and the Statement I could use the variable once again since is a method but I'm not able to. Is there any way to solve this using my methods for the JDBC connection?
