• MySQL Workbench 5.2.43 GA released

  The MySQL developer tools team announces the availability of version 5.2.43 of the MySQL Workbench GUI tool. This version contains various fixes and minor enhancements and includes 53 resolved bugs. With this version, Fedora 15 packages are replaced with Fedora 17. Also, Gatekeeper in Mac OS X Mountain Lion is now properly handled. • protected abstract override Foo(); &ndash; er... what?

  A couple of weeks back, a co-worker was pondering a situation he was facing.  He was looking at the following class hierarchy: abstract class OriginalBase { protected virtual void Test() { } } abstract class SecondaryBase : OriginalBase { } class FirstConcrete : SecondaryBase { } class SecondConcrete : SecondaryBase { } Basically, the first 2 classes are abstract classes, but the OriginalBase class has Test implemented as a virtual method.  What he needed was to force concrete class implementations to provide a proper body for the Test method, but he can’t do mark the method as abstract since it is already implemented in the OriginalBase class. One way to solve this is to hide the original implementation and then force further derived classes to properly implemented another method that will replace it.  The code will look like the following: abstract class OriginalBase { protected virtual void Test() { } } abstract class SecondaryBase : OriginalBase { protected sealed override void Test() { Test2(); } protected abstract void Test2(); } class FirstConcrete : SecondaryBase { // Have to override Test2 here } class SecondConcrete : SecondaryBase { // Have to override Test2 here } With the above code, SecondaryBase class will seal the Test method so it can no longer be overridden.  Then it also made an abstract method Test2 available, which will force the concrete classes to override and provide the proper implementation.  Calling Test will properly call the proper Test2 implementation in each respective concrete classes. I was wondering if there’s a way to tell the compiler to treat the Test method in SecondaryBase as abstract, and apparently you can, by combining the abstract and override keywords.  The code looks like the following: abstract class OriginalBase { protected virtual void Test() { } } abstract class SecondaryBase : OriginalBase { protected abstract override void Test(); } class FirstConcrete : SecondaryBase { // Have to override Test here } class SecondConcrete : SecondaryBase { // Have to override Test here } The method signature makes it look a bit funky, because most people will treat the override keyword to mean you then need to provide the implementation as well, but the effect is exactly as we desired.  The concepts are still valid: you’re overriding the Test method from its original implementation in the OriginalBase class, but you don’t want to implement it, rather you want to classes that derive from SecondaryBase to provide the proper implementation, so you also make it as an abstract method. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this before in the wild, so it was pretty neat to find that the compiler does support this case.

• Two Weeks To Go, Still Time to Register

  Yes, it's now only two weeks to the start of the 17th JavaOne conference! This will be my ninth JavaOne, I came fairly late to this event, attending for the first time in 2002.  Since then I've missed two conferences, 2006 for the birth of my son (a reasonable excuse I think) and 2010 for reasons we'll not go into here.  I have quite the collection of show devices, I've still got the WoWee robot, the HTC phone for JavaFX, the programmable pen and the Sharp Zaurus.  The only one I didn't keep was the homePod music player (I wonder why?) JavaOne is a special conference for many reasons, some of which I list here: A great opportunity to catch up on the latest changes in the Java world.  This is not just in terms of the platform, but as much about what people are doing with Java to build new and cool applications. A chance to meet people.  We have these things called BoFs, which stands for "Birds of a Feather", as in "Birds of a feather, flock together".  The idea being to have sessions where people who are interested in the same topic don't just get to listen to a presentation, but get to talk about it.  These sessions are great, but I find that JavaOne is as much about the people I meet in the corridors and the discussions I have there as it is about the sessions I get to attend. Think outside the box.  There are a lot of sessions at JavaOne covering the full gamut of Java technologies and applications.  Clearly going to sessions that relate to your area of interest is great, but attending some of the more esoteric sessions can often spark thoughts and stimulate the imagination to go off and do new and exciting things once you get back. Get the lowdown from the Java community.  Java is as much about community as anything else and there are plenty of events where you can get involved.  The GlassFish party is always popular and for Java Champions and JUG leaders there's a couple of special events too. Not just all hard work.  Oracle knows how to throw a party and the appreciation event will be a great opportunity to mingle with peers in a more relaxed environment.  This year Pearl Jam and Kings of Leon will be playing live.  Add free beer and what more could you want? So there you have it.  Just a few reasons for why you want to attend JavaOne this year.  Oh, and of course I'll be presenting three sessions which is even more reason to go.  As usual I've gone for some mainstream ("Custom Charts" for JavaFX) and some more 'out there' ("Java and the Raspberry Pi" and "Gestural Interfaces for JavaFX").  Once again I'll be providing plenty of demos so more than half my luggage this year will consist of a Kinect, robot arm, Raspberry Pis, gamepad and even an EEG sensor.   At the NIST Cloud Computing Workshop this week; representatives from Canada, China, and Japan presented on their cloud computing efforts. Some interesting points made: Canada: Building "Service Canada" cloud for all citizen services, but raised the issue of data location...cloud data must be within Canada border, so they will not focus on public clouds where they don't know or can't control data location. Japan: In response to the massive destruction of the Great East Japan Earthquake, Japan is building nation-wide cloud services to support disaster relief, data recovery, and support for rebuilding new communities. US Ambassador Philip Verveer discussed the need for international cooperation and standards development to enable interoperability of cloud services, keeping in mind cultural and political differences. Additionally, an industry panel reported on cloud standards development, including some actual interoperability testing at http://www.cloudplugfest.org. Much of the first two days of the workshop covered progress and action plans around the 10 High-Priority Requirements to Further USG Agency Cloud Computing Adoption. Thursday's sessions will cover the work of the various NIST Cloud Computing Working Groups on Reference Architecture and Taxonomy Standards Acceleration to Jumpstart the Adoption of Cloud Computing (SAJACC) Cloud Security Standards Roadmap Business Use Cases (see Working Groups of NIST Cloud Computing )

• Moms on Mobile: Are They Way Ahead of You?

  You may have no idea how much and how fast moms are embracing mobile. Of all the demographics that can be targeted by marketers, moms have always been at or near the top of the list. And why not? They’re running households, they’re all over town, they’re making buying decisions, and they’re influencing family and friends. They, out of necessity, become masters of efficiency and time management. So when a technology tool, like mobile, comes along that assists with that efficiency and time management, we would obviously expect them to take advantage of it. So if it’s obvious, why are so many big, sophisticated brands left choking on the dust of moms who have zoomed past them in the adoption of mobile, and social on mobile? Let’s break down some hard truths as presented by a Mojiava report: -Moms spend 6.1 hours per day on average on their smartphones – more than magazines, TV or radio. -46% took action after seeing a mobile ad. -51% self-identify as “addicted” to their smartphone. -Households with an income of $25K-$50K have about the same mobile penetration among moms as those with incomes of $50K-$75K. So mobile is regarded as a necessity for middle-class moms. -Even moms without smartphones spend 2.5 hours on average per day on some connected mobile device. -Of moms with such devices, 9.8% have an iPad, 9.5% a Kindle and 5.7% an iPod Touch. -Of tablet-owning moms, 97% bought something using their tablet in the last month. -31% spend over 10 hours per week on their tablet, but less than 2 hours per week on their PCs. -62% of connected moms use shopping apps. -46% want to get info on their mobile while in a store. -Half of connected moms use social on their mobile. And they’re engaged. 81% are brand fans, 86% post updates, and 84% comment. If women and moms are one of your primary targets and you find yourself with no strong social channels where content is driving engagement and relationship-building, with sites not optimized for mobile, or with no tablet or smartphone apps, you have been solidly left behind by your customers and prospects. And their adoption of mobile and social on mobile is only exponentially speeding up, not slowing down. How much sense does it make when your customer is ready to act on your mobile ad, wants to user your iPad app to buy something from you, wants to be your fan on Facebook, wants to get messages and deals from you while they’re in your store…but you’re completely absent? I’ll help you cheat on the test by giving you the answer…no sense at all. Catch up to momma.

• Profiling Startup Of VS2012 &ndash; dotTrace Profiler

  Jetbrains which is famous for the Resharper tool has also a profiler in its portfolio. I downloaded dotTrace 5.2 Professional (569€+VAT) to check how far I can profile the startup of VS2012. The most interesting startup option is “.NET Process”. With that you can profile the next started .NET process which is very useful if you want to profile an application which is not started by you.     I did select Tracing as and Wall time to get similar options across all profilers. For some reason the attach option did not work with .NET 4.5 on my home machine. But I am sure that it did work with .NET 4.0 some time ago. Since we are profiling devenv.exe we can also select “Standalone Application” and start it from the profiler. The startup time of VS does increase about a factor 3 but that is ok. You get mainly three windows to work with. The first one shows the threads where you can drill down thread wise where most time is spent. I The next window is the call tree which does merge all threads together in a similar view. The last and most useful view in my opinion is the Plain List window which is nearly the same as the Method Grid in Ants Profiler. But this time we do get when I enable the Show system functions checkbox not a 150 but 19407 methods to choose from! I really tried with Ants Profiler to find something about out how VS does work but look how much we were missing! When I double click on a method I do get in the lower pane the called methods and their respective timings. This is something really useful and I can nicely drill down to the most important stuff. The measured time seems to be Wall Clock time which is a good thing to see where my time is really spent. You can also use Sampling as profiling method but this does give you much less information. Except for getting a first idea where to look first this profiling mode is not very useful to understand how you system does interact.   The options have a good list of presets to hide by default many method and gray them out to concentrate on your code. It does not filter anything out if you enable Show system functions. By default methods from these assemblies are hidden or if the checkbox is checked grayed out. All in all JetBrains has made a nice profiler which does show great detail and it has nice drill down capabilities. The only thing is that I do not trust its measured timings. I did fall several times into the trap with this one to optimize at places which were already fast but the profiler did show high times in these methods. After measuring with Tracing I was certain that the measured times were greatly exaggerated. Especially when IO is involved it seems to have a hard time to subtract its own overhead. What I did miss most was the possibility to profile not only the next started process but to be able to select a process by name and perhaps a count to profile the next n processes of this name. • Rules Manager and Expression Filter getting removed

  I doubt that many people are using the Oracle features "Rules Manager" and "Expression Filter" as usually people handle these things (such as ensuring that a zip code or a car number plate has a certain format) within the application code and not inside the database. Oracle Beehive for instance uses that just on the side.  Anyway, just learned today that Rules Manager and Expression Filter components will get removed once our next database release most likely called Oracle Database 12c will get released. So before upgrading to Oracle Database 12c you can remove EXF and RUL components (SELECT COMP_ID FROM DBA_REGISTRY WHERE COMP_ID IN ('EXF','RUL'); ). You'd simply do that by executing the following script before upgrade:SQL> @?/rdbms/admin/catnoexf.sqlThis will clean up Rules Manager and Expression Filter components inside the database. You could run ?/rdbms/admin/catnorul.sql before but I believe catnoexf.sql will clean up everything already. • New version: Sun Rack II capacity calculator

  A new release of the Sun Rack II capacity calculator is available on eSTEP portal. The tool calculates all the data necessary (power requirements, BTU, number of rack units, needed power outlets etc.) while inserting the many different kind of HW equipment in aSun Rack II cabinet (version 1000 and 1200). It takes into consideration most of the available servers, storage devices, tapes, and Netra products. There are also a couple of third party products which are taken into account. • Two interesting big data sessions around Openworld

  For those who want to talk (not listen) about big data, here are 2 very cool sessions: BOF9877 - A birds of a feather session around all things big data. It is on Monday, Oct 1, 6:15 PM - 7:00 PM - Marriott Marquis - Golden Gate. While all guests on the panel are special, we will have very special guest on the panel. He is a proud owner of a Big Data Appliance (see here). Then there is a Big Data SIG meeting (the invite from Gwen): I'd like to invite everyone to our OOW12 meet up. We'll meet on Tuesday, October 2nd, 8:45 to 9:45 at Moscone West Level 3, Overlook 3. We will network, socialize and discuss plans for the group. Which topics interest us for webinars? Which conferences do we want to meet in? What other activities we are interested in? We can also discuss big data topics, show off our great work, and seek advice on the challenges.
