• Enabling AHCI in BIOS for SSD

  I am trying to help a friend with a desktop upgrade. It is an old machine with an Intel DG31 main board. The board has 1 IDE port to which a DVD-ROM drive is connected, and 2 SATA ports. 1 SATA port had a hard drive with XP on it. I have made that the secondary drive now and wiped the OS as requested, so it is just for data. The new SSD has been installed but I read that for best results one must enable AHCI in the BIOS? So I checked and in the BIOS there is a SATA Mode setting with 2 options - Native and Legacy. I think Native means AHCI? After setting to Native, I installed Windows 7 Home Premium and all the latest drivers from Intel's website and all Windows Updates. Now when I check Device Manager I see this: Also Microsoft says HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci\Start and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\IastorV\Start should have value 0 for AHCI but I see that the value is 3 for both. So does this mean that Native mode is not AHCI? Or Windows 7 ignored BIOS setting and installed in IDE mode, maybe because both cables are present? Please help me enable AHCI on this system. Thanks!

• Switch Windows 8 from a hybrid MBR/GPT => GPT only on Macbook Pro Retina

  I used DiskUtility+Bootcamp Wizard to setup my hard drive for Windows 8 (final MSDN). Somewhere in that process, the Apple tools turned my GPT disk into a hybrid MBR/GPT. All my 4 primary MBR partitions are used up, so when I try turning on Bitlocker in Windows 8, it complains about not finding a System drive. I know on Windows 8 the Bitlocker setup tries to create the 200(?)MB system partition if it's missing. However with all 4 partitions filled I suspect it can't create system drive = it can't find it = throws back an error like "BitLocker Setup could not find a target system drive. You may need to manually prepare your drive for BitLocker". I've already tried disabling hibernation, swap file etc. Now I'm thinking that if I were to get rid of the MBR scheme altogether, perhaps I can be alright within the GPT world without MBR's 4 primary partitions limit. So, how can I get rid of the MBR tables on the hybrid scheme in a manner that still leaves Mac OS and Windows 8 in working conditions? Details: Hardware is the MacbookPro Retina. • Remote Debug Windows Azure Cloud Service

It introduced a lot of cool features but one of it shocked most, which is the remote debug support for Windows Azure Cloud Service (a.k.a. WACS).   Live Debug is Nightmare for Cloud Application When we are developing against public cloud, debug might be the most difficult task, especially after the application had been deployed. In order to minimize the debug effort, Microsoft provided local emulator for cloud service and storage once the Windows Azure platform was announced. By using local emulator developers could be able run their application on local machine with almost the same behavior as running on Windows Azure, and that could be debug easily and quickly. But when we deployed our application to Azure, we have to use log, diagnostic monitor to debug, which is very low efficient. Visual Studio 2012 introduced a new feature named "anonymous remote debug" which allows any workstation under any user could be able to attach the remote process. This is less secure comparing the authenticated remote debug but much easier and simpler to use. Now in Windows Azure SDK 2.2, we could be able to attach our application from our local machine to Windows Azure, and it's very easy.   How to Use Remote Debugger First, let's create a new Windows Azure Cloud Project in Visual Studio and selected ASP.NET Web Role. Then create an ASP.NET WebForm application. Then right click on the cloud project and select "publish". In the publish dialog we need to make sure the application will be built in debug mode, since .NET assembly cannot be debugged in release mode. I enabled Remote Desktop as I will log into the virtual machine later in this post. It's NOT necessary for remote debug. And selected "advanced settings" tab, make sure we checked "Enable Remote Debugger for all roles". In WACS, a cloud service could be able to have one or more roles and each role could be able to have one or more instances. The remote debugger will be enabled for all roles and all instances if we checked. Currently there's no way for us to specify which role(s) and which instance(s) to enable. Finally click "publish" button. In the windows azure activity window in Visual Studio we can find some information about remote debugger. To attache remote process would be easy. Open the "server explorer" window in Visual Studio and expand "cloud services" node, find the cloud service, role and instance we had just published and wanted to debug, right click on the instance and select "attach debugger". Then after a while (it's based on how fast our Internet connect to Windows Azure Data Center) the Visual Studio will be switched to debug mode. Let's add a breakpoint in the default web page's form load function and refresh the page in browser to see what's happen. We can see that the our application was stopped at the breakpoint. The call stack, watch features are all available to use. Now let's hit F5 to continue the step, then back to the browser we will find the page was rendered successfully.   What Under the Hood Remote debugger is a WACS plugin. When we checked the "enable remote debugger" in the publish dialog, Visual Studio will add two cloud configuration settings in the CSCFG file. Since they were appended when deployment, we cannot find in our project's CSCFG file. But if we opened the publish package we could find as below. At the same time, Visual Studio will generate a certificate and included into the package for remote debugger. If we went to the azure management portal we will find there will a certificate under our application which was created, uploaded by remote debugger plugin. Since I enabled Remote Desktop there will be two certificates in the screenshot below. The other one is for remote debugger. When our application was deployed, windows azure system will open related ports for remote debugger. As below you can see there are two new ports opened on my application. Finally, in our WACS virtual machine, windows azure system will copy the remote debug component based on which version of Visual Studio we are using and start. Our application then can be debugged remotely through the visual studio remote debugger. Below is the task manager on the virtual machine of my WACS application.   Summary In this post I demonstrated one of the feature introduced in Windows Azure SDK 2.2, which is Remote Debugger. It allows us to attach our application from local machine to windows azure virtual machine once it had been deployed. Remote debugger is powerful and easy to use, but it brings more security risk. And since it's only available for debug build this means the performance will be worse than release build. • planar shadow matrix and plane b value

  I implemented planar shadows with the function D3DXMatrixShadow. As you know, we need plane and light factor to calculate a shadow matrix. The problem is that when I set the plane as D3DXPLANE p(0, -1, 0, 0.1f), the shadows by directional light are correctly rendered, but the shadows by point light are not rendered. However, if I use D3DXPLANE p(0, 1, 0, 0.1f), the situation is reversed, shadows by directional light are not drawn, the shadows by point light are ok. I cannot understand why it happens. Is it normal or am i missing something? Please explain to me why this happens. Thanks in advance.

Wait a minute, we have not declared any method with that name in our Person class. Oh no, we actually have. When you create a property, this is what happens behind the screen. The CLR creates two methods for each get and set property accessor. Let’s look at the signature once again: set_Name(String value) This also tells you where the ‘value’ keyword comes from in our set property accessor. You’re actually wiring up a method parameter to a field. 1: set 2: { 3: if (value == "aaa") 4: { 5: throw new ArgumentException("Invalid Name"); 6: } 7: _name = value; 8: } Digging deeper on this, I ran the ILDasm tool and this is what I see: We see the ‘free’ constructor (named .ctor) that the compiler gives us, the _name field, the Name property and the Save method. We also see the get_Name and set_Name methods. In order to compare the Save and the set_Name methods, I double-clicked on the two methods and this is what I see: The ‘.method’ keyword tells that both Save and set_Name are both methods (no guessing there!). Seeing the set_Name method as a public method did kinda surprise me. So I said, why can’t I do a person1.set_Name(“abc”) since it is declared as public. This cannot be done because the get_Name and set_Name methods have an extra attribute called ‘specialname’. This attribute is used to identify an IL (Intermediate Language) token that can be treated with special care by the .net language. So the thumb-rule is that any method with the ‘specialname’ attribute cannot be generally called / invoked by the user (a simple test using intellisense proves this). Their functionality is exposed through other ways. In our case, this is done through the property itself. The same concept gets extended to constructors as well making them special methods too. I'm looking for an easy way to include all referenced external resources in the HTML file directly, so that it doesn't have any external references any more. (Images should be included in the HTML file using the <img src="data:image/jpg;base64,[...] method). EDIT: I want to do this so that my web proxy can deliver a nice-looking error page if the backend is down, so I have to assume all my webservers cannot deliver the static content which would normally be linked to from my websites (CSS, images).

• BIOS corrupted? How to proceed? Acer Travelmate 290

  I have a older ACER Travelmate 290 (manufactured in 2002 or 2003), which I recently tried to upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10. After doing the upgrade process it appeared as if I had a problem with my x server configuration, as on the first reboot post-install I heard the Ubuntu startup sound, but had a black screen. I thought I would then reboot again to drop down into text-mode to trouble shoot the x configuration problem. However, when I tried rebooting, something went wrong and since then when I start up the machine I get absolutely nothing except the first hardware check (i.e. HDD light flashes, CD/DVD drive spins, etc.). Other than that the screen remains totally black and I have no HDD or processor activity at all. I have tried restarting it a number of time holding down all kinds of key combinations to try and coax it into the BIOS (if possible) with no luck. I have also tried putting in both a live Linux disc and a Windows install disk without any luck. With a disk in the drive it will spin for a few seconds and then stop. All this has lead me to suspect that the BIOS is somehow corrupt (not sure about the right terminology). I have tried putting a new BIOS image and installer program downloaded from ACER on a USB key to see if it will run when I start up the machine, but no luck. I'm not sure if this method of interacting/updating/flashing the BIOS will work outside of Windows/DOS as both OSs are mentioned kind of ambiguously in the documentation. I have also taken the laptop case apart and inspected the various cards and cannot find any obviously burned out components. I'm not sure how to proceed at this point in terms of components to try, or how to try and load a new BIOS image onto the board. Any advice here would be great, especially from those with experience with this particular line of laptops. Thanks!

• On dual boot system, Is it possible to use VirtualBox to boot other installed OS?

  I currently run Windows 7 from a 256GB SSD as my Operating System. Lately, for school, I've been using openSUSE linux inside a VirtualBox PC and I'm really liking it. I'm starting to hate even working in Windows. But I can't just abandon Windows. I've been considering dual booting openSUSE and will likely purchase another SSD for openSUSE. Once I have the dual boot set-up, there is going to be times I need to do something quick in the operating system that I'm not currently in. It would be a pain to have to reboot the computer each time I need to switch the OS for a simple task, especially from Windows since it doesn't let you save it's state. From openSUSE, I want to be able to start a VirtualBox Machine using my Windows Drive. And in Windows, I want to be able to start a VirtualBox Machine of my openSUSE Drive. Would this be possible? The issue I'm worried about is drivers. For instance, the OS will be installed on native hardware and have the native hardware's drivers configured. When I try to boot the OS in a VirtualMachine, I feel like the OS is not going to know what to do, and have to reconfigure itself or just not work.

• How do I pause and resume apt-fast package download?

  I know that in order to speed up apt-get downloads, I can use apt-fast (which uses the aria2c or axel engine - it depends on which one I install during the configuration). But even though it says it can pause and resume downloads, I don't know how to do it, and I can't find any answer online that tells me how to do it. I have no intention of pausing apt-fast update function, I just want the ability to pause the sudo apt-fast install package_name function and resume the downloading of a package in Ubuntu at will using apt-fast (with axel or aria2c) I have seen in some forums that sudo apt-fast update cannot be paused because it requires starting the entire process. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Any help would be much appreciated.

• Bluetooth refuses to connect since update to Ubuntu Gnome 13.10

  I can no longer connect to my bluetooth speakers since since upgrading to Ubuntu Gnome 13.10 and then Gnome shell to 3.10, which never were a problem with Ubuntu Gnome 13.04. My bluetooth-dongle seems to working fine and I can even detect and add the speakers (Creative D100) but when I try to slide the button from off to on in the bluetooth settings it just slides back to off. The "bluetooth-B" in the upper right corner is also gone. I actually managed to connect after I added "Enable=Socket" under "[general]" /etc/bluetooth/audio.conf and the indicator on the speakers confirms the connection, but I cannot find the speakers in the audio settings even then. I've tried to solve this for several days, reading tons of other possibly related questions here on ask ubuntu and elsewhere but am unable to find a solution. Any ideas?

  I just bought an external monitor for my laptop (Asus VH242H) but cannot set its resolution to anything higher than 1600x900. I tried both from System/Administration/Monitors and the ATI Catalyst Control Center. There was a CD that came with the monitor but it only contains a Windows installer. According to the monitor's specifications: 23.6” 16:9 widescreen with 1920×1080 resolution enables borderless Full HD 1080p full-screen video display. My graphic card is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 and the monitor is currently connected to my laptop with a VGA cable. How can I set my external monitor to its maximum resolution?

• GPL code allowing non-GPL local copies of nondistributed code

  I have come across a book that claims that alterations and augmentations to GPL works can be kept close-source as long as these are not redistributed into the wild. Therefore, customizations of websites deriving from GPL packages need not be released under the GPL and developers can earn profit on them by offering their services to their clients while keeping their GPL-based code closed source at the same time. (cf. Chapter 17 of WordPress Plugin Development by Wrox Press). I've never realized this, but essentially, by putting restrictions on redistributable code the GPL says nothing about what can and cannot be done with code which is kept private in terms of the licensing model. Have I understood this correctly?

• PHP scripts randomly becoming really slow to respond - Database lockup?

  Hi All, I wasn't sure whether to post this here or on stackoverflow, so apologies if its in the wrong place. I have about 7 php scripts running on a centOS VPS. Each of these scripts contacts a game server and processes the logs, with the logs it either does some database queries or sends info back to the game server. I am having an issue where some of the scripts will randomly become REALLY slow to respond and I don't know where to start with my debugging. Each script connects to its own database schema but on the same MySQL server. Each script will do about 4 inserts per second and twice as many select statements on their respective databases. I thought a database lockup may cause the issue but some console messages that are read from the database are sent to the game servers console without issue every 30 seconds, even when the script is slow to responding to other commands. Non of the scripts are using a lot of memory or CPU power. About 0.1% each. I know this information is really vague but I don't know linux very well at all (in fact, top is about my limit) and I really don't know where to start debugging this. Thanks.

  I'm trying to use NtBackup to back up the C: Drive on a Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 machine and get the following error in the log file: Backup Status Operation: Backup Active backup destination: 4mm DDS Media name: "Media created 04/02/2011 at 21:56" Error: The device reported an error on a request to read data from media. Error reported: Invalid command. There may be a hardware or media problem. Please check the system event log for relevant failures. Error: C: is not a valid drive, or you do not have access. The operation did not successfully complete. I'm using a brand new SATA Quantum Dat-72 drive with a brand new tape (tried a couple of tapes). I carry out the following: Open NTBackup Select Backup Tab Tick the box next to C: Ensure Destination is 4mm DDS Media is set to New Press Start Backup Choose Replace the data on the media and press Start Backup NTBackup tries to mount the media Error Message shows: The device reported an error on a request to read data from media. • Ubuntu Installation-Allocate drive space/Boot Loader

  When I try to install ubuntu 10.10 from the official livedisc I got in the mail, when I get to the "Allocate Disk Space" step I cannot get it to work. I shrank my win7 partition so I have unallocated space, then I tried using the space while it is formatted in NTFS, but the partitions will not show up in the box. /dev/sda is selected under boot loader, and I can't select anything else, but the partition box is blank so when I click "install ubuntu" it just says: "No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu." -I am trying to dual-boot win7 and ubuntu, but I was never asked in the install process whether I would like to install just ubuntu or dual-boot?

• Ubuntu Desktop Password

  I inherited a machine with Ubuntu desktop installed. It has a password in place and I have no idea what the password may be. I cannot get to the command line to use the methods I have found online. No matter how many times I press "Shift" during the boot process it still goes all the way to the desktop login. I never see grub. I am not sure which version I have but I think may be 9 or 10. • Hyperic HQ- Monitor process statistics for 50+ processes on Linux machine

  Is there an easy way to get metrics on all processes that start with the letters XYZ? I have about 80 processes that I have to monitor individually that all start with the prefix XYZ. I have created a query using the sigar shell: ps State.Name.sw=XYZ, which will give me a list of the processes that I want. What I need to do is define this list of processes through said query and collect and track statistics from the Process service: http://support.hyperic.com/display/hypcomm/Process+service What I need is 3 or 4 key statistics for each of the XYZ processes defined by my query to show up as graphs in the web front end. Note: Hyperic HQ server is installed on a windows machine and I'm monitoring a Linux box via an agent. • Nimbus Tweaking Help Needed

  I was reading this new article on Synthetica and NetBeans RCP this morning, when I remembered this screenshot from Henry Arousell from Sweden: Here, Nimbus is heavily being used, highlighting 6 areas where Henry would really benefit from any help regarding how the foreground properties should be set: The color of the main menu (and its subsequent unfolded menu options) The TopComponent tab colors (as you can see from the screenshot, they've managed to change the foreground colors of the ones in the editor mode by setting the Nimbus property "TextText"). They cannot manipulate TopComponents in other modes, though. Table header foreground colors The foreground color of any provided composite component, like a JFileChooser or the ICEPdf viewer or any other panel with label components. The progress bar message color. The status bar message color, A Nimbus expert is needed to help here, though it seems to me that some of the solutions have already been identified, or are similar, in the article pointed out above.

• Why is Windows Update trying to install an update I don't need?

  I have a Windows 7 system that currently has a single update pending: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems If I try to install the update, Windows Update will: Create a restore point Fail with the error: Code 9C48 Windows Update encountered an error. The event log for the event reads: Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems. If you search the web for that error, there are many other people with the exact same issue. Sadly, I am unable to apply the proposed solutions to my case, because I just installed this system. There is nothing on it, except Windows 7. I installed the system and ran through the updates. I also did the exact same process with this machine several times over the past few days due to a long-term test we just started. I didn't have any problems with any Windows Update on the previous installation runs and I know I didn't do anything different this time because I followed the installation procedures instructions which are to be used during the test. How did this happen and how do I solve it? Further Investigation So, as I always like to do, I ran the update again while running Process Monitor and dug up further details. WindowsUpdate.log First of all, there is a Windows Update log file located at C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log which I didn't know about.   In Ubuntu 12.04 LTS I installed the Eclipse CDT plugin and opened the new hello world project to just test everything out. When I was creating the project, I chose the only toolchain: "Linux GCC" When the project is created, however, it says that #include<iostream> #include<cstdlb> are unresolved. Thus, lines with cout and endl can't be used and it cannot find std. using namespace std; is also causing problems. How can I get my #include directives for standard library headers recognized, to support code using the std namespace?

• Ventrilo sound delay issue in Windows 7

  I've upgraded my machine to Windows 7 Professional (x64) (using format + clean install, not upgrade install). Everything seems to work fine except for Ventrilo. I used to have Vista Business x64 and Ventrilo worked fine there, on the same machine. The issue I am having is that when I am playing a game and using Ventrilo, everything works fine at first, but after a few minutes, I stop hearing anything that people say. If I minimize, I can see the speaker icons lighting up (meaning that people are talking), but I still can't hear anything. The sounds from the game and other OS sounds still play through the speakers just fine. Eventually, I will close ventrilo and then after a few seconds I will start hearing things that people were saying several minutes ago. I start hearing everything that was said, with no "silent time" in between. Note that the sounds keep playing even AFTER the ventrilo process is dead. I've tried using Ventrilo x64 and x86 versions. Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this problem?

• Yum installing wrong MySQL version on CentOS 5 (Amazon)

  I'm having trouble with a CentOS server running on AWS. This is CentOS 5.6 i386 from RightImage, but the problem was the same on all RightScale AMIs. When issuing the following command: yum install mysql mysql-server mysql-devel the only packages proposed by yum are MySQL-devel-community and MySQL-server-community. Which would't be a problem, except this package is old/incomplete, because it does not create a "mysqld" service, only a /etc/init.d/mysql (notice the missing d). That would't be a problem, I can start the service by doing ./etc/init.d/mysql start, and it starts OK, but there is no "mysql" (or other mysql*) command available. If I try to force a different version (yum install mysql50-server...) I get this yum error: mysql-5.0.77-4.el5_6.6.i386 from updates has depsolving problems --> mysql conflicts with MySQL-server-community (even when I don't have MySQL-server-community installed). I have tried this before and after yum update, in a fresh image. How can I install a working version of MySQL? I'm stuck on CentOS 5 because I want to install Kloxo (which does not yet support CentOS 6). I'm not interested in Webmin, and I can't afford cPanel. Thanks!

• Virtual (ESXi4) Win 2k8 R2 server hangs when adding role(s)

  I'm trying to provision a 2k8r2 Enterprise server in ESXi4. The OS installation goes fine, VMware tools, adding to domain, updates. All the basic stuff before you start adding Roles and Features. I've had this happen on two attempts already, and I'm not sure where the problem might be. I don't think it's hardware, because I have another 2k8r2 Standard server that's running fine. The only real difference is the install media. The server that's working was installed using a trial ISO and license. The one I'm having problems with is a full MAK installation. When I go to add a Role (the last case was Application Server) it gets all the way to "collecting installation results" before it hangs. CPU utilization in the vSphere client shows little spikes of activity with flatlines inbetween, but the whole console is locked up. The only way to release it is to power off and bring it back up. When you go to look at the added roles after bringing it back up, it shows that it is installed, but I don't trust that something didn't get wedged in all of that. The first install I did was with Thin Disk provisioning. The second attempt was with regular disk provisioning. In both cases 4GB of RAM, 2 vCPUs. VMware host is a HP Proliant DL380 G6, RAID-1 OS, RAID-5 data volume. 12 GB RAM. Has anyone else had this problem, or know where I should start poking around?

• Wecam not detected

  after much research ang googling, my web cam is still not recognized. In the time of Ubuntu 11.04 it was working fine. I did a fresh install of 11.10 and not more web cam. All the cheese and camera monotor and V4L tests and all failes with "cannot connect to /dev/video0" or equivalent. The output of 'lsusb' shows the webcam Bus 001 Device 002: ID 05a9:2640 OmniVision Technologies, Inc. OV2640 Webcam What I noticed is that neither /dev/v4l nor /dev/video* exists. If I re-install the v4l package all the /dev/video* are created, but no /dev/v4l If I reboot the /dev/video* are NOT created. I think the trouble is that the device are not created at boot time. I have a DELL Inspiron 1525 and until this fresh install the web cam worked fine. Can somebody help ? Thanks a lot Richard

  I had a simple plone site running on my Ubuntu 8.10 box, setup by following instructions on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/forum/server/Plone Now the computer got an Ubuntu 9.04 install from scratch, and I want to get the site up and running. As far as I understand several python libraries from 9,04 are not compatible with plone. I actually don't care about plone, I just found it easy to use. My site is just photo and video archive of several users, with low traffic but several gigabytes of data. What would you suggest? Is it easier to get plone working on my box and start my instance(how?), or recover the content from the instance folder(how?) and setup another content management system(which?)
