• Personal VPN Solutions

  I want to set up a VPN for my laptop to connect back at home so that I don't have to directly expose my desktop computer to the internet. Here is what I have: Internet -> DD-WRT v24sp1-mega -> Desktop PC w/ Windows 7 Ultimate -> MacBook w/ OSX 10.6 What would be the easiest thing to do? DD-WRT has PPTP and OpenVPN built in and Windows 7 has RRAS itself but thus far I've run into some problems. Are there any other alternatives, or suggestions on getting these to work? PPTP I tried setting up PPTP directly on DD-WRT using these directions. When I tried connecting using my external IP from the MacBook I just kept getting that the remote server did not respond. OpenVPN According to the instructions here I don't have enough open nvram to set up OpenVPN. RRAS I got RRAS set up without a problem and can connect from the MacBook to the Windows 7 box while I'm on the same network. I port forwarded 1723 on the DD-WRT back to the Windows 7 box and made sure that PPTP Passthrough was enabled. Again, like PPTP, it just kept timing out.

  I recently bought a UART WiFi module ( this one ) and configured it with right SSID but wrong password( and I don't know what it is ). The problem is that I can't reset this module to its manufacture settings and I can't connect to this module via serial port to configure it with some wire or cable. But I'm sure that my module is trying to connect my access point but with wrong network key ( because in logs of my access point I can see my module that trying to connect but it can't ) So, I wonder to know is there any way to create or configure a network (using some access point or something else) based on WPA2 Personal security that accepts any WPA2-PSK passwords ? Or is there any other solution for this problem ? If no, is there anyway to see what password this module using to connect to that network ? ( If yes, then I can change password of my network to that password and access to this module's admin panel ) I tried create an open network ( without any security key ) but my module just searches for WPA2 based networks ( I think ).

  I recently received a Mac Mini and would like to set it up as a web server and git source server. I would like to learn Linux so am interested in setting up my Mac Mini with Linux instead of OSX. Here are the main things that I will be using the Mac Mini for. git Repositories (via Gitosis) build server (build projects in git repositories using commit hooks and run tests) simple websites (PHP) learning C++ in a non-Windows environment What distribution would you recommend? Please provide some detail in your answer so that I can make an meaningful decision. Because I am looking to use the mini as more of a server than a normal desktop machine I was thinking of Ubuntu Server, I'm not sure if that is over kill though given the hardware I am using.

I have read the article by Microsoft about this issue, but there is no VC folder in my PC under C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\. How can I solve this problem?   Hello, I just enabled some Gmail Labs programs in my Gmail account, and then I noticed the orange triangle icon with an exclamation mark in it at the end of the address bar of my Google Chrome browser. Clicking on it brought forth a "Security Information' dialog box, with the following messages: "--mail.google.com The identity of website has been verified by Thawlte SGC CA. --Your connection to mail.google.com is encrypted with 128-bit encryption. However, this page includes other resources which are not secure. These resources can be viewed by others while in transit, and can be modified by an attacker to change the look or behavior of the page." I then logged into two of my other Gmail accounts, one of which has no Gmail Labs programs enabled, and the other with 1 program enabled quite some time ago, both with the same result as above (i.e., with the appearance of the orange triangle warning sign in the address bar). I don't remember seeing the orange triangle before, but I'm not sure if it has ever appeared or not. I have "Always use https" enabled for my Gmail accounts. My questions are: Is there a way to identify and remove these un-secure "resources"? (Could enabling Gmail Labs programs have brought these on?) Meanwhile, are my Gmail accounts compromised and unsafe to use? If so, what should I being doing about that now? After this problem is solved, would I need to reset the password to my Gmail accounts, and/or take any other measures to restore their security? Many thanks for answering my questions!

• Why does my motherboard go through an endless reboot cycle when 8 GB of memory is attempted vs 6 GB?

  I never got an answer in my googling to this about a year ago and have an extra stick of memory I'd like to be able to use. When is inserted the computer starts, and then reboots immediately in an endless reboot cycle. As soon as the 4th stick is removed, the computer works fine. Right now I have 6 GB of my 8 GB installed. Is there a solution that I am missing to enabling this motherboard to actually boot up with all 8 GB (it supports it). Right now it won't even boot up to BIOS with the 4 sticks... only 3? Whenever I configure a virtual host in the default folder, it works, however when I configure the virtual host in my home directory I get a "403 Forbidden" error. How do I configure a vhost in my home directory? • Windows XP SP3 Keyboard stops working

  Here's the strangest thing I have yet to see in 20+ yrs of computer repairs. My in-laws Windowsx XP SP3 has stopped recognizing keyboards. The keyboards work fine in the BIOS, during the boot select process to boot normally, etc. but once Windows comes up it will not recognize any USB keyboard. The USB mouse works fine, have tried different USB ports, different keyboards, etc. nothing works. I can log into the machine via VNC and use the remote keyboard just fine, but not connected locally. Tried a system restore, it says nothing changed. I am about to just re-install Windoze at this point, except I am afraid it will happen again. I have googled for this and it is not unheard of, but I have not found any solution other than nuking it. Anyone have any ideas? I have re-installed the USB drivers for the M/B. Gone into devices and deleted them for a re-install, etc. Keyboard works off a Linux live boot CD, and in the BIOS setup so it is not a hardware issue, and I have tried a few keyboards all of which I know are good and work fine on other systems.

  I need to kill the close 'x' button at the top of the dialog box. I have a modal that opens with an OK button that redirects to the site. The site behind the modal is in an iframe. When the user agrees to the statement in the dialog box and clicks the 'OK' button, it redirects to the site that is outside the iframe. If the user clicks on the 'x', it goes to the iframe site, which I do not want to have happen. I need the modal to work as a one-way to the site it goes to. It basically forces the user to accept the user agreement. I would post code, but its an intranet site. Thanks everyone for your help!

• Tunneling a TCP/IP Connection through Remote Desktop Connection

  There is a remote Windows server on a private network which I can connect to via Remote Desktop Connection. I would like to be able to make TCP/IP connections from my computer to other computers on that server's network. Remote Desktop Connection makes it possible to share printers, drives, and other local resources through the connection. Is there any way to "tunnel" a TCP/IP connection via RDC? I'd like something similar to the port-forwarding provided by SSH. I don't see any way to do this via RDC, but I'm hoping the capability is there and I just don't know about it.

  One of the things I like about Microsoft's RDC Client is that the resolution of the experience is set by the client and not, say, a physical monitor connected to the host, as is the case with VNC; the latter being the protocol used by Mac. This means that even though I'm connecting to a notebook with a 1280x800 physical resolution, via RDC I can run it at 2560x1600 on my 30" monitor. However, that only seems to work for RDC. Does anyone know of something I can run on the Mac that will allow me to remotely control it at a different resolution than what is physically set? TIA, Mark

• MS Office 2013 and Asian languages

  I've got a Win7 computer with Office 2013 installed. System language is German. When switching input language to Thai I can type in the system dialog boxes (like start buttno app finder), but can't type in MS Word (pressing the keys on the keyboard does nothing on the screen, the cursor doesn't move). The weirdest thing here is: if I use numeric keypad and type any number after that the keyboard starts working in Word for a few characters. Japanese and Nepal input languages work fine. Does anyone know any way to troubleshoot? Thank you!
