• TV won't go into standby

  When I select Start-Turn off computer-Standby the 'turn off computer' option window closes, and then nothing else happens. I can start new applications, and Windows acts like I never selected standby. I ran it for several hours after that. If I have a TV program scheduled to record when I select standby I get a window (the Pinnacle TV software) asking if I'm sure, there are programs scheduled to record - and the computer just keeps running after I select yes, never going into standby. I added that detail as it shows the standby process is starting. [This problem also happens if a TV program is not scheduled, so the scheduler task in not running/in memory. This problem happens regardless of whether I'm not watching TV. This problem happens regardless of whether Media Center is running (it usually isn't, I'm using Pinnacle to watch TV).] I looked at "How to troubleshoot hibernation and standby issues in Windows XP" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907477 - ACPI is enabled, and "standby" is an option in "Power Options Properties." So it appears to be setup correctly. Windows XP SP3 Media Center Edition, all current updates installed.

• Error code 1005 (errno: 121) upon create table while restoring MySQL database from a dump

  I have a linux prod machine and a Win7 64bit dev machine. My workflow includes dumping the production MySQL database on the linux machine and restoring it in my local MySQL database on the windows machine (using SQLyog). This worked fine for a long time. Following some trouble, I formatted and reinstalled my windows dev machine. Since then I'm unable to restore the db on it. I keep receiving the following error: Query: CREATE TABLE `auth_group` ( `id` int(11) NOT NULL auto_increment, `name` varchar(80) collate utf8_unicode_ci NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id`), UNIQUE KEY `name` (`name`) ) ENGINE=InnoDB AUTO_INCREMENT=2 DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8 COLLATE=utf8_unicode_ci Error occured at:2010-06-26 17:16:14 Line no.:30 Error Code: 1005 - Can't create table 'ap_site.auth_group' (errno: 121) Notice that this is the first create table statement in the sql dump file. This error occurs both on MySQL Community Server 5.1.41 and 5.1.48 and with SQLyog Community 8.0.4 and 8.5.1. I really don't know what's different in my configuration from before the reinstall and now and why does it have this effect. Restoring from sql dump is something I need to keep on doing, so I need a permanent fix and not a tailored workaround.

• SSRS2008R2 report times out, but the underlying query executes in the Management Studio

  A customer of mine recently moved servers and the new server has SQL2008R2. His old server was SQL2005. The new server has substantially better CPU, RAM, and disk performance than the old, but several reports time out while executing. When I run the underlying query in the SQL Management Studio, the query executes in sub-second time. The exact error message returned via the Report Manager UI is: An error occurred within the report server database. This may be due to a connection failure, timeout or low disk condition within the database. (rsReportServerDatabaseError) Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. It must be noted that this database is not just analytical; it's also fairly transactional, although the transaction volume is not exceptionally high. What can I do to improve the performance of the SSRS query engine? Are there settings in the data source I can adjust, or in the SSRS config files?

• computer build for extreme tabbed browsing

  I'm interested in building or buying a task-specific computer for my brother. His requirements are ridiculously simple: the machine has to be able to wait in hundreds of web-based virtual waiting rooms at once and not crash. To be competitive, he needs to be able to enter the waiting rooms an dauto-refresh them faster. My question is, what priority do I give the different specs? My initial surmise is this: Connection speed (nothing to do with my build, but I kind of think this will be more beneficial than anything I build for him) Memory size -- I don't usually see firefox taking up more than a gig, even when heavily tabbed, but I think one gig for the operating system and two gigs for the browser are necessary. Processor speed -- I think the processor will affect performance, but even something out of date will do what he needs Memory speed/RAM bus -- I doubt this will matter much, but it seems just on this side of irrelevant. Everything else is a non-issue for him. Does this seem to stack up correctly? Also, since he's looking to stay on the cheaper side, and I might end up recommending a refurb to him, is there anything particularly egregious that Vista would do if it came pre-installed? If I build it myself, I'll give him linux, but if I have it shipped to him, I'm not sure I could walk him through the install process for linux, but I probably could walk him through the process to upgrade to Windows 7, if it were somehow worth it.

• Postfix not working

  A while ago I installed the postfix mail server on my ubuntu 10.04 VPS. At the time it was working good but now it's just stopped working. I was trying to enable SASL authentification and somewhere it must have went really wrong. I've studied the postfix main.cf and done everything in an orderly fashion to ensure that it is nothing wrong. I also have Dovecot installed and configured dovecot.conf to run with Postfix. If I try to do telnet localhost 25 while logged in on the server I just get: Connection closed by foreign host. • Directory directive: AuthType None but still need an AuthProvider?

  For now I just need the server to let me download files from one specific folder (in my case I chose /opt/myFolder for that task) Distribution is Debian 6.0 *edit_start* Apache version is 2.4, according to their official documentation, the Order/Allow clauses are deprecated and should not be used anymore I'm an idiot: Apache version is 2.2. *edit_end* My directory directives in apache2.conf look like this: <IfModule dir_module> DirectoryIndex index.html index.htm index.php </IfModule> ServerRoot "/etc/apache2" DocumentRoot "/opt/myFolder" <Directory /> Options FollowSymLinks AuthType None AllowOverride None Require all denie </Directory> <Directory "/opt/myFolder/*"> Options FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride None AuthType None Require all allow </Directory> When I try to access a file inside that folder (http://myserver.de/aTestFile.zip) I get an Internal Server Error. Also I hope someone can explain to me what kind of AuthenticationProvider I'd need for that. Everytime I search for those things I get pointed at people asking how to protect files/directories with passwords or restrict access to some IP addresses, which doesn't really help me. ok, since I've Apache version 2.2, here is the error I get when using the Order/Deny/Allow commands instead of AuthType/Require: Invalid command 'Order', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration.

• Using 1and1.com Servers, SMTP Mail is Limited - Local XAMPP Server Works As Expected

  I'm starting to not like 1and1.com that much. I've used them for years, but mainly for simple sites without much need for configuration. I know there are better hosting companies out and I may go seeking them. The problem here is that on my Local XAMPP server (sitting on a network with Comcast ISP), I have a PHP script that uses PEAR::Mail to send mail using MIME. The script works find locally with either smtp.1and1.com and corresponding credentials and smtp.gmail.com with corresponding credentials, using appropriate ports, etc. 1and1 tells me that I have to change the MX record on the domain where this script runs in order to make this work. This doesn't make sense to me. Now I'm pretty new to all this, but how is it that this is the case? Why can my local server work just fine, out of the box, but their servers not? I have asked them these questions, but they are very vague and I cannot get any good answers from them. • Java web app deployment and ControlTier adoption

  I've been searching for a configuration and deployment manager tool for my java-linux based web service and have been looking mainly at ControlTier (http://controltier.org). We operate at a medium scale (100's of hosts, multi-DC, dozens of services). There seem to be be plenty of lower level system admin tools such as chef, puppet, cfengine, bcfg2 and more and my understanding and the reason I'm calling them "low level" is that they are great for system level administration tasks such as setting up a mount, file permissions, users etc but aren't designed, for example for java deployments, which usually come with a build process and special java semantics. In many cases any tool can be used to do anything but if it was not designed for the task it can get uncomfortable. OTOH control-tier seem to have been designed just for that - java application deployments, at least that's what all the tutorials on their site demonstrate but here's the problem - The wiki at http://controltier.org/wiki/ is pretty good and stuffed with examples and the company behind the open source CT product is very responsive (pushy...) however, I'm yet to have seen any material from 3rd party users on the net. No success stories, no detailed blog posts, no best practices, no cheat sheets, not even hate letters, nothing. This plays badly for DTO solutions, CT's sponsor for two reasons, one is that it makes me suspicious what's the reason for the poor adoption? and second, what do I do if I get stuck and there's no help page on CT's wiki page and the mailing list is too slow to answer. I'm stuck with a "free" product that a consultancy company is pushing. So my question here - I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has had real world experience with CT for java based web app deployments and if he'd thumb up the product? Any other comments that may enlighten me are welcome of course...

• What should I be doing while I wait for a progress bar?

  So I am sitting here waiting for a progress bar to run (20 mins or so), and was wondering how best to use my time as a SysAdmin. I debated not posting this question briefly, as this could get flagged as subjective, but I think it's an important question, and a question that can be legitimately answered (per the FAQ) I know this something a lot of sys admins deal with, especially if they are client-based I would venture to guess. There is a lot of material out there about how to multi task, but SysAdmin work is unique in this area as well. I could switch over to another project, but I could get wrapped up in that, and forget about the original project I was working on, and that's hard if you are billing a client for your time, both for tracking your time, as well as being fair to that client. I could check ServerFault, but that isn't directly work related, I could sort my email, so on and so forth. What do you do, or what should I do when I have time waiting for a progress bar? Thanks! • Laptop Acer Travelmate 4050 takes over 10 Mins to POST

  Hi, I am a computer tech and have received a laptop for repair. I noticed when I turned it on the laptop would not do anything for a min or two (the fan would run up and stop, power led would shine and some cd rom activity then stop). It would sit there with a black screen. Suddenly after a random number of minutes (between 1-20mins!) the Acer BIOS screen would display and POST would happen before booting into Windows XP. It has frozen in XP at various times and pointed towards a CPU fault and over heating. The fan was on its last legs, sounded like a car engine, so I replaced this. Still same issues. I next replaced the CPU like for like. Same problems. Also applied new thermal paste between the cpu and heatsink, when running the fan kicks in occasionally (not as often as I thought it would) and I left it playing mp3, online radio and updating to service pack 3 and it wouldnt freeze. shutting down ok, cold start, not ok. Waits again before showing the BIOS screen. The hard disk was also making a screaming noise (SMART test and chkdsk passed) but I also replaced this. The laptop powers up with and without the battery so dont think its a battery issue. Running out of ideas and wondered if anyone had any advice. Thanks

• Application for time and projet management

  I want to improve the way I organize my projects/tasks/schedule What I do now is: keep an excel sheet with the name of the most important tasks/projects, I look at it at the beginning of each day and decide the ones I will focus on on iCal I write down events for each day, or for a concrete time (13 to 14 hours). I set up each day the tasks I want to accomlish, and allocate them hours I use Things (culture code) to keep info about tasks and projects not very important and which are not time allocated yet (GTD name = someday) I use Mail on Mac and create folders for the mails I want to process with the name of the different projects I save the main info for each project on freemind maps My system works well at the moment but it is pretty complicated to use. I want to make it better and I am looking for something with these requirements: must be 100% offline accessable it should use as less programs/resources as possible, ideally just one program should be able to manage all my info I can use the GTD methodology mixed with priorities and I can allocate each task converted to event on my calendar I can have different daily/weekly, etc views on a calendar to see the "big picture" must run on mac os x leopard price does not matter, I will pay for this So, according to your experience, can you recommend me something like this? • Windows XP over two monitors, but one of them switches off at boot... how to fix? How to switch bac

  When booting into XP (x64, Athlon II X2 245, 4GB RAM), my main monitor (got two 19" TFTs hooked up, two gfx cards, a 4650 (1GB, the primary monitor's on this) and a 4350 (512MB)) switches off. Logging in blind (cursor down key, typing password) gets me one screen, the secondary. Booted correctly until about two days ago. No clue what's the cause, last change was (if I don't overlook something) installing the ATI 9-12 hotfix. And booting into Windows 7, after returning from 7, it was like this. For some weird reason, I cannot start Catalyst Control Center (I right-click desktop, choose the CCC entry, the pointer changes to hourglass for a half-second... and nothing. Likewise with "Properties"... I think, as all windows open on the primary (off) screen, and no entry appears in the task bar for Properties) Completely stumped. Windows 7, same setup, works w/o a hitch. The primary monitor appears to run in some unknown, but pretty low, resolution, as the mouse pointer only moves onto it at about half-height. But, w/o CCC or display properties, I cannot check. And, obviously, not change anything. Hope this was not too long-winded. And I'm sure I still forgot essential stuff. :P

Now, I have d:\opt\apache\cgi-bin\expired.pl and I expect GET /licensecheck.php?code=123456. And I wish to fake client into thinking it speaks with /licensecheck.php, but actually return data by \expired.pl. What I tried was setting following at the end of http.conf: RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^/licensecheck.php$ /cgi-bin/expired.pl [T=application/x-httpd-cgi,L] ...but it keeps 404-ing me, looking for cgi-bin directory (not cgi-bin\expired.pl) in my DocumentRoot! [error] [client 127.0.0.1] script not found or unable to stat: D:/opt/apache/htdocs/cgi-bin /cgi-bin/expired.pl and all other scripts in /cgi-bin/ work as expected, Only way I could make it work was actually putting the \expired.pl to DocumentRoot, but I don't want this, I want my cgi-bin neatly separated :)

• Active FTP client blocked on Windows XP

  Summary We have a FTP server (running in active mode). We have an FTP client which is connecting to the server, carrying out a task and then closing the connection. The FTP Client can perform this operation on multiple threads. Problem We have a situation where customers are experiencing occasional failures to carry out operations on a FTP connection. The actual connection has been made to the server but when the server attempts to return data on the data port if fails. Observations We have a simple test FTP client which is running two separate threads. Each thread is performing a recursive listing of files from a root directory. With the firewall running on the client machine the hang happens within a few minutes. If the firewall is turned off on the client machine, the test application seems to run correctly. This does point to a potential firewall issue. However, with the firewall on we can list files on our company FTP server without any issues. If the simple test FTP client runs a single thread then we do not experience any problems whether or not the firewall is turned on. We have another simple test FTP client which was running 4 threads (with each opening a new FTP connection, doing a directory listing and closing the FTP connection as fast as possible) overnight with the firewall turned off. With the firewall turned on it fails in a short space of time. The confusing thing is that if the test FTP client and the FTP server are run on the same machine the failure occurs even though the firewall is turned off. This means that the problem may not be firewall related. Any help with what this could be would be much appreciated. Thanks Ian

• Parsing text files

  I encountered a situation tonight where I wanted to parse a text file. I had a very, very long word list that contained English words delimited by lines. I wanted to get rid of every word (or line) that was longer than 7 characters. This would be simple in Linux but I can't seem to find a simple solution in WindowsXP. I tried using Notepad++ regular expression search but that was a huge failure. I tried using the expression .{6,} without finding any matches. I'm really at a loss because I thought this sort of thing would be extremely easy and there would be tons of tools to accomplish a task like this. It seems like Notepad++ supports every other feature in the world except the very basic ones that seem the most obvious. Another one of my goals was to put some code before and after the word on each line. aardvark apple azolio would turn into INSERT INTO Words (word) VALUES ('aardvark'); INSERT INTO Words (word) VALUES ('apple'); INSERT INTO Words (word) VALUES ('azolio'); What suggestions/tools/tips do you have to accomplish tasks similar to this in WindowsXP?

• How can I override mod-php5's .php mapping to php4-cgi per VirtualHost or Directory?

  I am running Debian Linux with apache2 and libapache2-mod-php5 5.3.3-7. I have one VirtualHost which requires php4. So I researched and compiled php4-cgi. However, I cannot seem to: Override mod-php5's mapping of .php in that vhost (or even globally, without disabling php completley). Even find where that mapping is made, in hope of disabling it and enabling mod-php5 or php4-cgi per vhost. This is my php4-cgi mapping (Inside the one php4 vhost): ScriptAlias /php4 /usr/local/php4/bin <Directory /usr/local/php4/bin> Options +ExecCGI +FollowSymLinks </Directory> <Directory /www/test> AddHandler php4-cgi-script .php Action php4-cgi-script /php4/php Options +ExecCGI </Directory> This does not work, mod-php5 still runs all .php files in that vhost/directory. If I change the file extension in the AddHandler above from .php to .php4, then .php4 files do run php4-cgi as expected, but I can't change all the files in the app to .php4. I thought maybe I could disable the mod-php5's mapping in my vhost or directory, then do my cgi-config (as above) but many combinations of these in different contexts did not work: RemoveHandler .php RemoveType .php php_flag engine off (this seems to even disable my php4-cgi so that wont work) The only other place I can find any mapping is in /etc/mime.types, but commenting out the relevant lines and restarting apache2 does not affect mod-php5's .php mapping. I have searched as much as I can, it is now a mystery to me. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

• Why does notepad crash on desktop files in the save-as dialog?

  Here's a puzzling problem - maybe somebody has an idea. Right now I am out of ideas. On Win7 64bit, the following crashes Notepad: On Desktop, right click, select "New | Text Document". This creates "New Text Document.txt". Right click on that file, select "Edit". This opens notepad with the empty file. Select "File | Save as": Notepad crashes and Win7 reports that "Notepad has stopped working". Now, move the file to c:\temp and repeat steps 2 and 3: no crash this time and the save-as dialog appears normally. I can create similar steps for the "open" dialog. Things I have tried: Safe mode - does not work, same problem Create a new user and try again logged in as that user - no crash Name file differently, or create elsewhere and then move to desktop - same problem Use Wordpad instead - same problem Review shell extensions with ShellExView - nothing extraordinary here Stare at the event log entries for each of the crashes. Does not enlighten me. At time of crash look at the process explorer stack view. Hangs at a function "TaskDialog". sfc.exe /scannow repaired some files but the problem persists. • Being a more attractive job candidate - Certs XOR Degree

  I'm currently working in an IT position, where I do helpdesk stuff, and predominantly security related issues/consulting (In the loosest sense of the term) In-House and for Service-Contract clients (as the only/acting CCSP [I guess I should say only person with Cisco experience] in my organization). I've professionally written Kernel Mode drivers for a gaming company. Among other things that I'm proud to put on a resume. I think of myself as very reasonably qualified as a System Administrator, With excellent Cisco experience, among other things I think would make a good addition to almost any IT staff in need of a new employee. However, Something has always tripped me up - Human Resources. Let me explain, I decided to skip the university route - I'm immensely glad that I did, The computer science graduates that I've met and work with rarely know much of anything about Computers (Until they gain some 'real' experience), Even when asked about Theoretical Computing fundamentals they can rattle something off about Turing Completeness but rarely do they understand the mathematical underpinnings. In short, I think instead of going to college, I'd rather pick up some real world experience. However, Apparently, Employers rarely think the same way. A quick perusal of jobs through the standard job search engine yields nothing short of a conspiracy to exclude anyone without 'A Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or Equivalent'. Interviews I've had in the past have almost always been entangled with - 1. My Age (Which I can't really change) and 2. Lack of Degree. Employers frequently disregard the CCNA/CCSP, The experience I've gained through internships, My extensive experience in x86 assembly and C, among so many other things I like to think are valuable to employers - In lieu of the fact that I don't have a piece of paper. So, AS AN EMPLOYER - Is it even worth working on my CCIE? Or should I pad my resume with certifications that are easier to acquire (Like CISSP, MSCE, Network+, etc.). Or should I ditch the whole idea and head back to get a Mathematics or CS degree?

• Uninstall php5 installed from source

  I have tried to install php5 from source , and it worked... Then for some reason need to install the official packets, so i tried a make uninstall and for my surprise there is such make uninstall... so i tried delete all the installed files by hand. Stop. I have tried reinstall and purge all php related packages via aptitude with not success. OS: Debian Squeeze. uname -a Linux desktop 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Jan 10 22:40:40 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux Any idea how to fix that?

• Cisco ASA 5510 Time of Day Based Policing

  I have a Cisco ASA 5510 setup at a boarding school. I determined that many (most?) of the students were downloading files, watching movies, etc, during the day and this was causing the academic side of our network to suffer. The students should not even be in their rooms during the day, so I configured the ASA to police their network segment and limit their outbound bandwidth. This resolved all of our academic issues, and everyone was happy. Except the resident students. I have been asked to change/remove the policing policy at the end of the day, to allow the residents access to the unused bandwidth at night. There's no reason to let bandwidth sit unused at night just because it would be abused during the day. Is there a way to setup Time of Day based Policies on the ASA? Ideally I'd like to be able to open up the network at night and all day during weekends. If I can't set Time based policies, is is possible to schedule the ASA to load a set of commands at a specific time? I suppose I could just setup a scheduled task on one of our servers to log in and make the changes with a simple script, but this seems like a hack, and I'm hoping there is a better or more standard way to accomplish this. Thanks. Edit: If there is a totally different solution that would accomplish a similar goal, I'd be interested in that as well. Free/Cheap would be ideal, but if a separate internet connection is my only other option, it might be worth fighting for money for hardware or software to do this better or more efficiently.

• How to diagnose website performance/app pool recycling with Windows 2008/IIS7

  Ok, so there are various symptoms here (clients and and our own employees complaining of intermittent slowdowns, getting 'kicked out' to login page or just having a save request not properly save the submitted data). The environment: Windows Server 2008 (Datacenter), Service Pack 2, 64-bit, 2x2.8 GHz processors, 7.5 GB RAM MS SQL Server 2008 (running on the same machine) IIS 7 There are ~10 websites running on the server, each in their own application pool - most of these pools are running in Integrated mode, 2 are in Classic, all are on .NET 2.0 and all run as ApplicationPoolIdentity. I'm trying to analyze, diagnose, and troubleshoot and am struggling with where to get more info about what could be happening. Here are some steps i have already taken: Set each application pool to recycle once per day, and removed any other automatic recycling Set a Virtual Memory Limit for each to 1024000KB (1GB) Enabled ALL 'Generate Recycle Event Log Entry' entries (Config Changes, Isapi Reported Unhealthy, Manual Recycle, Private Memory Limit Exceeded, Regular Time Interval, Request Limit Exceeded, Specific Time, Virtual Memory Limit Exceeded) I have seen the app pool processes recycle (in Task Manager) - a new one will start up, and then the first one dies off - and this has happened without the memory or time going over the settings. This is a fairly new server, and most of these came from Windows Server 2003/IIS6. Any 'next steps' for setting up information gathering, logging, diagnosing, etc. would be much appreciated! j

  We have an Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition installation (10.2.0.1.0) on a Windows Server 2003 virtual machine. It was initially created with Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 but has now been migrated to Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V. The services start on system boot, but the instance does not start up. Right now I have a horrible hack where I've created a Scheduled Task to run oradim -startup -sid ORCL when the Administrator account logs on, and set the VM to auto-logon. I'd still like to work out why it's not working.
