• Any idea of what to do with an old PC?

  I got an old PC for free, similar to that one. Additionlly, I'm a hobbyist programmer who does mainly python and java under a linux (mostly ubuntu) development environment. And now I wonder what I could do with such a piece of crappy hardware and would be pleased to get a good answer. It's one thing if you code your app that could run on almost any pc (or webbrowser) but another if you got an own hardware platform which you could extend or more generally customize the way you like. What I would like to hear from you: Are you in a similar situation? Have you already done a project like that? What would be your ideas?

• Java and Eclipse setup properly, how do I install JOGL or LWJGL?

  I have my Java environment installed alongside Eclipse, and I was successfully able to create and run a new project (simple System.out.println("Yay I work!"); I have the OpenGL SuperBible, and I primarily want to code 3D things (I'll take my time using the book to learn how to draw shapes in 3D space, etc..) Can you help me get setup with OpenGL in Java? I dont really need LWJGL, although I WILL make games eventually. I just can't even figure out with all of these terrible (and old) tutorials floating around on the net how to install either JOGL or LWJGL. If you can give me a hand with that, I'd appreciate it. I'd like to feel I contributed by having this page show the answer to the question, so that other poor souls googling for this same information can benefit.

• How to give life to my idea which belong to my company?

  I wonder, what options do I have in the following situation. In the course of the several projects I realised the need in some auxilary software product (related to testing of the main products). I applied a creative approach to the matter and implemented a system which I think has a potential and looking promising (maybe not on the market but at least among some interested supporters). I have even more ideas related to this system and continue developing at my free and work time. It has become a work and hobby at the same time. Unfortunately, this work basically has nothing in common with the company's business and there is no way this will be organized in a form of standard development process and be presented to costumers as a product. What can you suggest in this situation? How to avoid breaching of contract? Have you had something similar in your career? What if my intention is to develop it as an open source project?

  Good day! Our professor asked us to create a Web-based program using JSP and JDBC. The problem is I don't have any idea what to program. We have 5 days to create the program and I am searching websites like hotel reservation system, library catalogue system, Amazon, etc but I think it is too big for 5 days (and I am just a beginner).   I want to write a game as my final year diploma project.(I'm a 4th-year-student now so I've got a year and several months). But I don't know what to choose: either write my own game engine using DirectX9(10)(I don't like OpenGL) or use OGRE + PhysX(Don't like Unity) I'm more interested in writing my own game engine(but I wonder if I'll create engine on the same level as even Unreal 1.0 hah) but on the other side with PhysX I'll have advanced physics in my game and with OGRE I'll have good grahics. For 3d models I want to use Maya. What do you advise me to choose? As for me I've got a little DirectX experience,not bad C++ programming skills(but not expert's) and a little knowledge of Maya. My English isn't perfect either hah...

  So I've gone with a somewhat singleton approach to my game class: #include "myGame.h" int main () { myGame game; return game.Execute(); } But now I need to define a class that accesses variables in the instance of myGame. class MotionState { public: virtual void setWorldTransform (...) { VariableFromMyGameClass++; //<-- !? ...} }; I'm trying to integrate this class into my project from an example that just uses globals. How can I access variables of myGame class in the definition of new classes? Should I give up on my singleton approach?

• Automatically delete files after they expire

  I've got this idea for some time and I was wondering if anyone has seen such a feature/app in any operating system and if you haven't, what do you think about it. Where do you think I should begin? The idea is simple. I think we all have those files that are made and probably used for a few days and then are left on our disk and we never delete them or even check to see if we need them again. It'd be cool if you could right click on a file and click on "Expire in.. 3 days" for example. And the file gets deleted after 3 days. I have a great need for this and maybe some people will find it useful. I was thinking of writing a script and use the Nautilus Action project in GNOME for a start.

  I've run into an issue that breaks my collisions. Here's my method: Gather Input Project Rectangle Check for intersection and ispassable Update The update method is built on object_position * seconds_passed * velocity * speed. Input changes velocity and is normalized if 1. This method works well with just one object comparison, however I pass a list or a for loop to the collision detector and velocity gets changed back to a non zero when the list hits an object that passes the test and the object can pass through. Any solutions would be much appreciated. Side note is there a more proper way to simulate movement?

• Advice on approaching a significant rearrangement/refactoring?

  I'm working on an application (hobby project, solo programmer, small-medium size), and I have recently redesigned a significant part of it. The program already works in it's current state, but I decided to reimplement things to improve the OO design. I'm about to implement this new design by refactoring a big part of the application. Thing is I'm not sure where to start. Obviously, by the nature of a rearrangement, the moment you change one part of the program several other parts (at least temporarily) break. So it's a little 'scary' to rearrange something in a piece of software that already works. I'm asking for advice or some general guidelines: how should I approach a significant refactoring? When you approach rearranging large parts of your application, where do you start? Note that I'm interested only in re-arranging the high-level structure of the app. I have no intention of rewriting local algorithms.

• How should I get my code ready for OpenSourcing it and putting it on GitHub?

I am going to be posting everything to GitHub so people can tweak it and hopefully make it better. I guess what I'm asking is, what would be the best way to make sure my code is sufficiently documented and worded right for other people to use? • Managing different utility classes between engine and libraries

  I'm currently in updating some engine code (which does not work, so it is more like creating a engine). I've decided to swap over to SFML (instead of my own crappy renderer, window manager, and audio), Box2D (since I need physics, but have none), and some small utilities I've built myself. The problem is that each of the project mentioned over use different types for things like Vector2, etc. So to the question: is it a good idea to replace Box2D and SFML vectors with my own vector class (which is one of my better implementations)? My idea then was to have a separate .lib with all my classes that should be shared between all the projects in the solution.

  What I've found is a solution where you have to code a custom GraphicsDeviceControl to put inside the form (the well known tutorial from the APPHub), but that's not what I'm searching for. I would like to say that before start to right my question here, I "googled" a lot and I saw some questions here, but I couldn't find what I'm looking for. I would like to have the Draw/Update loops completly managed by XNAFrameWork (with XNA project and so), and not by a custom component. I hope you understand what I asked. Thanks in advance.   I have a unity project and I use a Android (java) plugin to get camera data. I draw this on a TextureView. I want to hide/show this view when I press a button in unity. But my app crashes when I setVisibility onCreate UnityPlayer.currentActivity.addContentView(texView, new FrameLayout.LayoutParams(400, 400)); java: public void HideVideo() { //Hide view _TextureView.setVisibility(View.INVISIBLE); } Is there an extra function I need to call, or may I only call it on certain times?   Often when I'm building my MVC 2 application using Visual Studio 2010, I get the following error: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS. On the internet, this error seems to be related to having a nested web.config in your application. • What is the primary use of Vertex Buffer Objects?

  From what I've read, it seems VBOs are purely for performance. I'm working on a very rudimentary learning project in lwjgl and I'm just trying to figure out what more advanced features of the library I should be delving into, and what their use is. My understanding is that VBOs allow a person to keep vertexes in VRAM while they aren't currently being drawn in a scene. In my case, I'm just drawing quads and performance probably isn't a concern at all, but I'm trying to piece together what's happening under the hood. If I'm drawing quads directly, I'm drawing from the CPU memory, correct? Also, if I'm not doing any checks for visibility, does that mean I'm rendering absolutely everything in the "scene", regardless of whether its in view? Are VBOs a way to store objects and only render what's needed?

  I have tried to start programing with coco2dx but i have no idea where to start and the tutorials are no very not very helpful. What i am looking for is some tutorials/guides on how to begin using cocos2dx for the total beginner. Things like how to setup a project and run it and how to do simple things like draw graphics on the screen, play sounds and get input. I am running on windows 7 and have been told by the cocos2dx wiki that this may cause problems so if anyone has a solution to this that would also be helpful.

• Implementing cache system in Java Web Application

I am interested in caching in a Web application and in order to better understand the process I'm trying to implement something on my own.
