• WebCenter Content shared folders for clustering

  When configuring a WebCenter Content (WCC) cluster, one of the things which makes it unique from some other WebLogic Server applications is its requirement for a shared file system.  This is actually not any different then 10g and previous versions of UCM when it ran directly on a JVM.  And while it is simple enough to say it needs a shared file system, there are some crucial details in how those directories are configured. And if they aren't followed, you may result in some unwanted behavior. This blog post will go into the details on how exactly the file systems should be split and what options are required. Beyond documents being stored on the file system and/or database and metadata being stored in the database along with other structured data, there is other information being read and written to on the file system.  Information such as user profile preferences, workflow item state information, metadata profiles, and other details are stored in files.  In addition, for certain processes within WCC, each of the nodes needs to know what the other nodes are doing so they don’t step on each other.  WCC keeps track of this through the use of lock files on the file system.  Because of this, each node of the WCC must have access to the same file system just as they have access to the same database. WCC uses its own locking mechanism using files, so it also needs to have access to those files without file attribute caching and without locking being done by the client (node).  If one of the nodes accesses a certain status file and it happens to be cached, that node might attempt to run a process which another node is already working on.  Or if a particular file is locked by one of the node clients, this could interfere with access by another node.  Unfortunately, when disabling file attribute caching on the file share, this can impact performance.  So it is important to only disable caching and locking on the particular folders which require it.  When configuring WebCenter Content after deploying the domain, it asks for 3 different directories: Content Server Instance Folder, Native File Repository Location, and Weblayout Folder.  And starting in PS5, it now asks for the User Profile Folder. Even if you plan on storing the content in the database, you still need to establish a Native File (Vault) and Weblayout directories.  These will be used for handling temporary files, cached files, and files used to deliver the UI. For these directories, the only folder which needs to have the file attribute caching and locking disabled is the ‘Content Server Instance Folder’.  So when establishing this share through NFS or a clustered file system, be sure to specify those options. For instance, if creating the share through NFS, use the ‘noac’ and ‘nolock’ options for the mount options. For the other directories, caching and locking should be enabled to provide best performance to those locations.   These directory path configurations are contained within the <domain dir>\ucm\cs\bin\intradoc.cfg file: #Server System PropertiesIDC_Id=UCM_server1 #Server Directory Variables IdcHomeDir=/u01/fmw/Oracle_ECM1/ucm/idc/ FmwDomainConfigDir=/u01/fmw/user_projects/domains/base_domain/config/fmwconfig/ AppServerJavaHome=/u01/jdk/jdk1.6.0_22/jre/ AppServerJavaUse64Bit=true IntradocDir=/mnt/share_no_cache/base_domain/ucm/cs/ VaultDir=/mnt/share_with_cache/ucm/cs/vault/ WeblayoutDir=/mnt/share_with_cache/ucm/cs/weblayout/ #Server Classpath variables #Additional Variables #NOTE: UserProfilesDir is only available in PS5 – 11.1.1.6.0UserProfilesDir=/mnt/share_with_cache/ucm/cs/data/users/profiles/ In addition to these folder configurations, it’s also recommended to move node-specific folders to local disk to avoid unnecessary traffic to the shared directory.  So on each node, go to <domain dir>\ucm\cs\bin\intradoc.cfg and add these additional configuration entries: VaultTempDir=<domain dir>/ucm/<cs>/vault/~temp/ TraceDirectory=<domain dir>/servers/<UCM_serverN>/logs/EventDirectory=<domain dir>/servers/<UCM_serverN>/logs/event/ And of course, don’t forget the cluster-specific configuration values to add as well.  These can be added through Admin Server -> General Configuration -> Additional Configuration Variables or directly in the <IntradocDir>/config/config.cfg file: ArchiverDoLocks=true DisableSharedCacheChecking=true ServiceAllowRetry=true    (use only with Oracle RAC Database)PublishLockTimeout=300000  (time can vary depending on publishing time and number of nodes) For additional information and details on clustering configuration, I highly recommend reviewing document [1209496.1] on the support site.  In addition, there is a great step-by-step guide on setting up a WebCenter Content cluster [1359930.1].

• Designing a Database Application with OOP

  I often develop SQL database applications using Linq, and my methodology is to build model classes to represent each table, and each table that needs inserting or updating gets a Save() method (which either does an InsertOnSubmit() or SubmitChanges(), depending on the state of the object). Often, when I need to represent a collection of records, I'll create a class that inherits from a List-like object of the atomic class. ex. public class CustomerCollection : CoreCollection<Customer> { } Recently, I was working on an application where end-users were experiencing slowness, where each of the objects needed to be saved to the database if they met a certain criteria. My Save() method was slow, presumably because I was making all kinds of round-trips to the server, and calling DataContext.SubmitChanges() after each atomic save. So, the code might have looked something like this foreach(Customer c in customerCollection) { if(c.ShouldSave()) { c.Save(); } } I worked through multiple strategies to optimize, but ultimately settled on passing a big string of data to a SQL stored procedure, where the string has all the data that represents the records I was working with - it might look something like this: CustomerID:34567;CurrentAddress:23 3rd St;CustomerID:23456;CurrentAddress:123 4th St So, SQL server parses the string, performs the logic to determine appropriateness of save, and then Inserts, Updates, or Ignores. With C#/Linq doing this work, it saved 5-10 records / s. When SQL does it, I get 100 records / s, so there is no denying the Stored Proc is more efficient; however, I hate the solution because it doesn't seem nearly as clean or safe. My real concern is that I don't have any better solutions that hold a candle to the performance of the stored proc solution. Am I doing something obviously wrong in how I'm thinking about designing database applications? Are there better ways of designing database applications?

• android game performance regarding timers

  Im new to the game-dev world and I have a tendancy to over-simplify my code, and sometimes this costs me alot fo memory. Im using a custom TimerTask that looks like this: public class Task extends TimerTask { private MainGamePanel panel; public Task(MainGamePanel panel) { this.panel=panel; } /** * When the timer executes, this code is run. */ public void run() { panel.createEnemies(); } } this task calls this method from my view: public void createEnemies() { Bitmap bmp = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(getResources(), R.drawable.female); if(enemyCounter < 24){ enemies.add(new Enemy(bmp, this)); } enemyCounter++; } Since I call this in the onCreate-method instead of in my views contructor (because My enemies need to get width and height of view). Im wondering if this will work when I have multiple levels in game (start a new intent). • Resolution independence - resize on the fly or ship all sizes?

  My game relies heavily on textures of various sizes with some being full-screen. The game is targeted for multiple resolutions. I found that resizing textures (downsizing) works quite well for this game’s art type (it’s not Pixel Art or anything like that). I asked my artist to ensure that all textures at the edges of the screen to be created in such a way that they can safely “overflow” off screen; this means that aspect ratio is not an issue. So with no aspect ratio issues, I figured that I would simply ask my artist to create assets in very high resolution, and then resize them down to the appropriate screen resolution. The question is, when and how do I do that? Do I pre-resize everything to common resolutions in Photoshop and package all assets in the final product (increasing the size download that the user has to deal with) and then select the appropriate asset based on the detected resolution? Or do I ship with the largest set of Textures, detect the resolution on load, set a render target and draw all downsized assets to it and use that? Or for the latter, do I use some sort of a CPU-sided algorithm to resize on game load?

• MX Record for SubDomains

  I want to be able to send email to any subdomain I like and not have to configure A records and MX records for each subdomain. Ideally I could send an email to [email protected] and [email protected] and not have to configure anything other than my original domain.com. My current setup: I have a domain (domain.com) and want to have multiple subdomains. (a.domain.com, b.domain.com, c.domain.com, etc). I have an MX record setup to point to domain.com and all email works fine for that domain. I have NOT setup A records for all the subdomains (and really don't want to).

Please consider, there can be more than one occurence of c (next to each other or not) in one tag...   I have multiple virtual host in one server and plan to has some alias setup in one virtualhost. So I add the Alias /foo/ /path/to/foo/ in virtualhost directive,but it has no effect. request of host1/foo/ will return 404. But if I add this to /etc/apache2/mods-available/alias.conf, it works. But the problem is host2 will also share this alias. Is there a way to make the alias work only for host1? B.T.W, I use apache2ctl -l, there's no mod_alias.c listed, weird.

• Why does my browser take me to Scour.com? (redirect virus)

  The "scour" or Rootkit.Win32.TDSS virus has a long history which can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scour Here is the primary symptom: after searching for something in your web browser using google, one of the results that you click on redirects you to scour.com. If you've executed ClamWin, Malwarebytes, McAfee, Norton, etc. to find and isolate the virus without any luck--this isn't really a surprise, since this virus attaches to existing system drivers. I only know of one reliable package that will remove this without ill effects--like adding new spyware. This package is called TDSSKiller. I have seen multiple websites that claim to have this software available, but the one that I know is reliable is located here: http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684 Once you go to Kaspersky's tech support site, the TDSSKiller zip file is available for downloading. When you execute this software, you will be able to "cure" or repair the infected driver. Remember to jot down the name of the driver for future reference--should you need to reinstall the driver from a "same-as" working computer, or your install disk if the repair is ineffective. The driver that happened to get infected on my computer was the tcpip.sys driver. This caused my win sockets to loose their ip addresses. In most other instances, less critical drivers such as HDAudBus.sys are infected. In my case, I was not through correcting my computer problems until I corrected the broken WinSock issue and loaded an earlier version of the tcpip.sys driver from: C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 which I placed in: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers Don't forget to reboot your computer after your repair! Once you download TDSSKiller and cure/repair your infected driver(s), the redirect on google searches should disappear .

• Are More Comments Better in High-Turnover Environments?

  I was talking with a colleague today. We work on code for two different projects. In my case, I'm the only person working on my code; in her case, multiple people work on the same codebase, including co-op students who come and go fairly regularly (between every 8-12 months). She said that she is liberal with her comments, putting them all over the place. Her reasoning is that it helps her remember where things are and what things do since much of the code wasn't written by her and could be changed by someone other than her. Meanwhile, I try to minimize the comments in my code, putting them in only in places with a unobvious workaround or bug. However, I have a better understanding of my code overall, and have more direct control over it. My opinion in that comments should be minimal and the code should tell most of the story, but her reasoning makes sense too. Are there any flaws in her reasoning? It may clutter the code but it ultimately could be quite helpful if there are many people working on it in the short- to medium-run.

What I'd like to get in the output is one line per unique string and the sum of the numbers for the identical strings. Some strings appear only once while other appear multiple times. E.g.   The cloud was tailor built for aspiring companies to create innovative internet based applications and solutions. Whether you’re a garage startup with very little capital or a Fortune 1000 company, the ability to quickly setup, deliver, and iterate on new products is key to capturing market and mind share. And if you can capture that share and go viral, having resiliency and infinite scale at your finger tips is great peace of mind. Drivers Cost avoidance Time to market Scalability Solution Here’s a sketch of how a basic Software as a Service solution might be built out: Ingredients Web Role – this hosts the core web application. Each web role will host an instance of the software and as the user base grows, additional roles can be spun up to meet demand. Access Control – this service is essential to managing user identity. It’s backed by a full blown implementation of Active Directory and allows the definition and management of users, groups, and roles. A pre-built ASP.NET membership provider is included in the training kit to leverage this capability but it’s also flexible enough to be combined with external Identity providers including Windows LiveID, Google, Yahoo!, and Facebook. The provider model provides extensibility to hook into other industry specific identity providers as well. Databases – nearly every modern SaaS application is backed by a relational database for its core operational data. If the solution is sold to organizations, there’s a good chance multi-tenancy will be needed. An emerging best practice for SaaS applications is to stand up separate SQL Azure database instances for each tenant’s proprietary data to ensure isolation from other tenants. Similar, using Java, developers can use code like shown below to verify the user authentication status: ADFContext adfContext = ADFContext.getCurrent(); SecurityContext securityCtx = adfContext.getSecurityContext(); boolean userAuthenticated = securityCtx.isAuthenticated(); Note that the Java code lines use the same security context reference that is used with expression language. But is this all that there is? No ! The goal of ADF Security is to enable all ADF developers to build secure web application with JAAS (Java Authentication and Authorization Service). For this, more fine grained protection can be defined using the ResourcePermission, a generic JAAS permission class owned by the Oracle Platform Security Services (OPSS).  Using the ResourcePermission  class, developers can grant permission to functional parts of an application that are not protected by page or task flow security. For example, an application menu allows creating and canceling product shipments to customers. However, only a specific user group - or application role, which is the better way to use ADF Security - is allowed to cancel a shipment. To enforce this rule, a permission is needed that can be used declaratively on the UI to hide a menu entry and programmatically in Java to check the user permission before the action is performed. Note that multiple lines of defense are what you should implement in your application development. Don't just rely on UI protection through hidden or disabled command options. To create menu protection permission for an ADF Security enable application, you choose Application | Secure | Resource Grants from the Oracle JDeveloper menu. The opened editor shows a visual representation of the jazn-data.xml file that is used at design time to define security policies and user identities for testing. An option in the Resource Grants section is to create a new Resource Type. A list of pre-defined types exists for you to create policy definitions for. Many of these pre-defined types use the ResourcePermission class. To create a custom Resource Type, for example to protect application menu functions, you click the green plus icon next to the Resource Type select list. The Create Resource Type editor that opens allows you to add a name for the resource type, a display name that is shown when granting resource permissions and a description. The ResourcePermission class name is already set. In the menu protection sample, you add the following information: Name: MenuProtection Display Name: Menu Protection Description: Permission to grant menu item permissions OK the dialog to close the resource permission creation. To create a resource policy that can be used to check user permissions at runtime, click the green plus icon in the Resources section of the Resource Grants section. In the Create Resource dialog, provide a name for the menu option you want to protect. To protect the cancel shipment menu option, create a resource with the following settings Resource Type: Menu Protection Name: Cancel Shipment Display Name: Cancel Shipment Description: Grant allows user to cancel customer good shipment   A new resource Cancel Shipmentis added to the Resources panel. Initially the resource is not granted to any user, enterprise or application role. To grant the resource, click the green plus icon in the Granted To section, select the Add Application Role option and choose one or more application roles in the opened dialog. Finally, you click the process action to define the policy. Note that permission can have multiple actions that you can grant individually to users and roles. The cancel shipment permission for example could have another action "view" defined to determine which user should see that this option exist and which users don't. To use the cancel shipment permission, select the disabled property on a command item, like af:commandMenuItem and click the arrow icon on the right. From the context menu, choose the Expression Builder entry. Expand the ADF Bindings | securityContext node and click the userGrantedResource option. Hint: You can expand the Description panel below the EL selection panel to see an example of how the grant should look like. The EL that is created needs to be manually edited to show as #{!securityContext.userGrantedResource[               'resourceName=Cancel Shipment;resourceType=MenuProtection;action=process']} OK the dialog so the permission checking EL is added as a value to the disabled property. Running the application and expanding the Shipment menu shows the Cancel Shipments menu item disabled for all users that don't have the custom menu protection resource permission granted. Note: Following the steps listed above, you create a JAAS permission and declaratively configure it for function security in an ADF application. Do you need to understand JAAS for this? No!  This is one of the benefits that you gain from using the ADF development framework. To implement multi lines of defense for your application, the action performed when clicking the enabled "Cancel Shipments" option should also check if the authenticated user is allowed to use process it. • What should I expect from a system engineer university career

  I'm starting tomorrow a series of interviews to decide which university should I choose to get a degree in System Engineer. I know this is a serious university but I would like to get some feedback about what should I expect or "demand" from the university. My experience in the technology field is (obviously) limited and would like to be aware of what should I to be aware if the university might be good or not. Specially in following fields: Infrastructure: what are the essentials? big pluses? Theoretical vs Practical: how practical should it be? what is a "good" mix? Programming languages, frameworks, etc: Which are the ideal for learning? Most demand? Latest technologies: What should they be teaching right know to "prove" they are up to date. Qualification system: What exam methods do you think are ideal for this kind of degree, good ol' Q&A, multiple choice, projects, a fair mix? What other points do you think I should care about? What isn't important? Thanks in advance. I realize this is might be a very subjective topic so I tried to make it as specific and on topic as I could but any recommendations are of course welcome. I also understand that none of this questions will guarantee this will be a good university but it might give me another reference as to which should I choose when the moment comes.

• How can I create my own private RSS feed of selected podcasts?

  I would like to be able to browse the Internet and "drag" available MP3 files of various podcast episodes into my own private RSS feed. I would like to then subscribe to this RSS feed with iTunes. Do you know of any applications or services that would do this? (I subscribe to IT Conversations and they have a private RSS feed that you can create of their episodes. I like this feature very much. If only I had such a feature that would work more generally). One of the reasons I am looking for this, that my iPod Touch has problems handling podcast playlists that span multiple RSS feeds.

• NTFS write speed really slow (<15MB/s) on Ubuntu

  When copying large files or testing writespeed with dd, the max writespeed I can get is about 12-15MB/s on drives using the NTFS filesystem. I tested multiple drives (all connected using SATA) which all got writespeeds of 100MB/s+ on Windows or when formatted with ext4, so it's not an alignment or drive issue. top shows high cpu usage for the mount.ntfs process. AMD dual core processor (2.2 GHz) Kernel version: 3.5.0-23-generic Ubuntu 12.04 ntfs-3g version: both 2012.1.15AR.1 (Ubuntu default version) and 2013.1.13AR.2 How can I fix the writespeed?

• Test a simple multi-player (upto four players) Android game in single developer machine

  I'm working on a multi-player Android game (very simple it is that it doesn't have any game-engine used). The game is based on Java Socket. Four devices will connect the game server and a new thread will manage their session. The game server will server many such sessions (having 4 players each). What I'm worried about is the testing of this game. I know it is possible to run multiple android emulators, but my development laptop is very limited in capabilities (3 GB RAM, 2 Ghz Intel Core2Duo and on-board Graphics). And I'm already using Ubuntu to develop the game so that I have more user memory available than I'd have with Windows. Hence, the laptop will burn-to-death on running 4 emulator instances. I don't have access to any android device, neither I have another machine with higher configuration. And I still have to develop and test this game. P.S. : I'm a CS student, and currently don't work anywhere, and this game is college project, so if there are any paid solutions, I cannot afford it. What can I do to test the app seamlessly? ability to test even only 4 clients (i.e. only 1 session) would suffice, its alright if I can't simulate real environment with some 10-20 active game sessions (having 4 players each).
