  • what, why, when, should I learn computer science?

    - by dramasea
I'm 16 years old and really an enthusiast on web programming. I know (X)HTML, css, javascript and php. And i heard about computer science. Below are my question: What is computer science is? Should a web programmer learn computer science? If the answer of question 2 is yes, then what programming language should i learn before i get into computer science(I saw the video of 'Introduction to computer science' which is one of the MIT opencourse and it started to use python without teaching u from scratch) Can I learn computer science now?(Without a university degree, i can watch opencourseware)

  • Modern programming language with intuitive concurrent programming abstractions

    - by faif
I am interested in learning concurrent programming, focusing on the application/user level (not system programming). I am looking for a modern high level programming language that provides intuitive abstractions for writing concurrent applications. I want to focus on languages that increase productivity and hide the complexity of concurrent programming. To give some examples, I don't consider a good option writing multithreaded code in C, C++, or Java because IMHO my productivity is reduced and their programming model is not intuitive. On the other hand, languages that increase productivity and offer more intuitive abstractions such as Python and the multiprocessing module, Erlang, Clojure, Scala, etc. would be good options. What would you recommend based on your experience and why?

  • Ways to use your skills as a developer to give back to the community/charities.

    - by Ryan Hayes
Recently I came upon a community event called GiveCamp. GiveCamp is a weekend-long event where technology professionals from designers, developers and database administrators to marketers and web strategists donate their time to provide solutions for non-profit organizations. Since its inception in 2007, the GiveCamp program has provided benefits to over 150 charities, with a value of developer and designer time exceeding $1,000,000 in services! Coming from a very rural part of the country where there is a huge opportunity for charity events like this, it got me wondering. Are there other large movements like GiveCamp that are out there? GiveCamp is sponsored by Microsoft, so of course most are run through .NET user groups. Are there other flavors of it? Different types? Java/Python/other open source charity movements? If not, how do you give back?

  • Autocad on linux ubuntu 11.10!

    - by gabriel
I am trying 3 years now installing autocad,3ds max and revit architecture on ubuntu with the help of wine!Every year i am very optimistic cause i see the new wine versions already improved. So, now i am starting again in a clean ubuntu install to install the autocad 2013 with the wine version wine1.4.I am not trying to have an answer only for me but i want all this ubuntu community try for this and finally we can achieve that! The winetricks have already net framework 4 to install which is the reason i have not already ran in the pas autocad. So, i would like to remove completely my windows 7 partition from my pc and go on a linux machine without loosing the powerfull architectural programms.I know all about blender and staff so i just want you to help find a solution on that because i know there is a solution!Maybe i will have to learn all the c++ or python etc staff. But i am sure that a solution can come with the help of all of us!Any suggestion about this problem will be very nice and helpfull. Thanks in advance! Gabriel

  • Is Haskell worth learning?

    - by Jason K
I am looking at this question primarily from a career point of view, so I hope you answer it accordingly. I am fairly proficient with Python, can write C++ and I am a final year student of computer science engineering I am looking to learn Haskell because I have heard a lot about it. My question is: apart from learning it because of all the good I have heard about it, is it any good for my career? Is it used in the industry? I am curious to learn it but unless it helps me somehow in my career, I am not willing to make that change at this stage. Looking for some personal experiences here. Thanks!

  • What functionality does dynamic typing allow?

    - by Justin984
I've been using python for a few days now and I think I understand the difference between dynamic and static typing. What I don't understand is under what circumstances it would be preferred. It is flexible and readable, but at the expense of more runtime checks and additional required unit testing. Aside from non-functional criteria like flexibility and readability, what reasons are there to choose dynamic typing? What can I do with dynamic typing that isn't possible otherwise? What specific code example can you think of that illustrates a concrete advantage of dynamic typing?

  • Maps for Business: Generating Valid Signatures

Maps for Business: Generating Valid Signatures This video shows developers how to generate signed requests to Google Maps for Business Web Services such as the Geocoding API. It also points Maps for Business developers to pertinent documentation like developers.google.com and shows an example of the Maps for Business Welcome Letter. To get a response from the Maps for Business API Web Services, developers need to know: how to find their Maps For Business client ID; how to include that client ID in requests; how to retrieve their Maps for Business digital signing key from the Maps for Business welcome materials; and how to use the key to generate a signature. The video will walk developers through the signature generation steps using Python, and provides pointers to examples in other languages. • Computer Science or Computer Engineering for Data Science and Machine Learning

    - by ATMathew
I'm a 25 year old data consultant who is considering returning to school to get a second bachelors degree in computer science or engineering. My interest is data science and machine learning. I use programming as a means to an end, and use languages like Python, R, C, Java, and Hadoop to find meaning in large data sets. Would a computer science or computer engineering degree be better for this? I realize that a statistics degree may be even more beneficial, but I'll be at a school which dosn't have a stats department or a computational math department.

  • Why does Clojure neglect the uniform access principle?

    - by Alexey
My background is Ruby, C#, JavaScript and Java. And now I'm learning Clojure. What makes me feel uncomfortable about the later is that idiomatic Clojure seems to neglect the Uniform access principle (wiki, c2) and thus to a certain degree encapsulation as well by suggesting to use maps instead of some sort of "structures" or "classes". It feels like step back. So a couple of questions, if anyone informed: Which other design decisions/concerns it conflicted with and why it was considered less important? Did you have the same concern as well and how it end up when you switched from a language supporting UAP by default (Ruby, Eiffel, Python, C#) to Clojure?

  • Help with algorithmic complexity in custom merge sort implementation

    - by bitcycle
I've got an implementation of the merge sort in C++ using a custom doubly linked list. I'm coming up with a big O complexity of n^2, based on the merge_sort() slice operation. But, from what I've read, this algorithm should be n*log(n), where the log has a base of two. Can someone help me determine if I'm just determining the complexity incorrectly, or if the implementation can/should be improved to achieve n*log(n) complexity? If you would like some background on my goals for this project, see my blog. I've added comments in the code outlining what I understand the complexity of each method to be. Clarification - I'm focusing on the C++ implementation with this question. I've got another implementation written in Python, but that was something that was added in addition to my original goal(s).

  • Developing iOS apps as web developer

    - by Keyo
My Boss has sold a few 'iPhone apps' to clients, we are a web development shop. I have explained to him that I do not know the first thing about them, but it's such a powerful buzz-word and we need to meet clients expectations. I do have some experience in C, Java and Python which should help if I need to use objective-C. I have even done a few Android tutorials. These apps will more or less be HTML, in my mind they are not real apps, but faux apps which have the same functionality as the clients' websites. To me a real app is something that uses the phones hardware inputs and outputs, gps, accelerometer, speaker etc. What resources can I use to get up to speed iOS development and how to build apps in html. I have no idea where to begin.

  • Installing pgAdmin III for postgreSQL 9.2

    - by Mikey
I have a windows server that runs postgresql 9.2. I want to hit it using pgAdmin III from my Ubuntu Linux 12.10 workstation box. I installed pgAdmin III from synaptic and also tried direct download from postgreSQL site using software installer. Regardlesss, I can get only get pgAdmin III for postgresql 9.1. When I run pgAdmin III and point to my server I get an error message telling me that the database is 9.2 and my pgAdmin III is for 9.1, isn't compatible with 9.2. I can access the server itself fine OK from the Ubuntu box - I have Python programs that hit the database with no problems - but I need pgAdmin III for 9.2 running under Ununtu Linux 12.10. Is it available? Where do I get it?

  • Autostart app with proper icon in unity launcher

    - by kyleN
One can autostart an application such that it launches on session start with an xdg desktop file in ~/.config/autostart (or /etc/xdg/autostart). But my application (a python/gtk/webkit/html5 app) when autostarted has a unity (and a unity-2d) launcher icon that is a gray question mark, even though: when I find it in dash, the dash shows the icon I specify in my main desktop file (in /usr/share/applications) when I launch it from dash, the launcher shows the icon I specify in my main desktop file when I add it as a favorite, the launcher shows the proper icon There are two cases where I get the gray question mark icon: autostart launch from terminal (this use case is not essential though and doesn't involve the desktop file anyway: but should/does ubuntu have an xdg desktop file interpreter à la #!/usr/bin/desktop or something) So: what is needed such unity (3d/2d) launcher panel shows the icon specified in an autostart desktop file?

  • Are there advantages for using recursion over iteration - other than sometimes readability and elegance?

    - by Prog
I am about to make two assumptions. Please correct me if they're wrong: There isn't a recursive algorithm without an iterative equivalent. Iteration is always cheaper performance-wise than recursion (at least in general purpose languages such as Java, C++, Python etc.). If it's true that recursion is always more costly than iteration, and that it can always be replaced with an iterative algorithm (in languages that allow it) - than I think that the two remaining reasons to use recursion are: elegance and readability. Some algorithms are expressed more elegantly with recursion. E.g. scanning a binary tree. However apart from that, are there any reasons to use recursion over iteration? Does recursion have advantages over iteration other than sometimes elegance and readability?

  • Google I/O 2012 - OAuth 2.0 for Identity and Data Access

Google I/O 2012 - OAuth 2.0 for Identity and Data Access Ryan Boyd Users like to keep their data in one place on the web where it's easily accessible. Whether it's YouTube videos, Google Drive files, Google contacts or one of many other types of data, users need a way to securely grant applications access to their data. OAuth is the key web standard for delegated data access and OAuth 2.0 is the next-generation version with additional security features. This session will cover the latest advances in how OAuth can be used for data access, but will also dive into how you can lower the barrier to entry for your application by allowing users to login using their Google accounts. You will learn, through an example written in Python, how to use OAuth 2.0 to incorporate user identity into your web application. Best practices for desktop applications, mobile applications and server-to-server use cases will also be discussed. • What should a freelancer's business card have?

    - by Sergio
For example, when I first started out freelancing a year ago, my business card had my name, email and website - and up top a list of the technologies I'm comfortable with. In retrospect I don't feel this was a wise decision. Why would a potential client know what Python or Ruby is? How could he know what .NET was? I still have a couple of the old batch left, but I'm going to send out for some new cards. What do you recommend we developers have to show on our business cards? Am I correct in thinking listing technologies is meaningless to potential clients?

  • What is a practical way to debug Rails?

    - by Joshua Fox
I get the impression that in practice, debuggers are rarely used for Rails applications. (Likewise for other Ruby apps, as well as Python.) We can compare this to the usual practice for Java or VisualStudio programmers--they use an interactive debugger in a graphical IDE. How do people debug Rails applications in practice? I am aware of the variety of debuggers, so no need to mention those, but do serious Rails programmers work without them? If so, why do you choose to do it this way? It seems to me that console printing has its limits when debugging complex logic.

  • I don't really understand "Backend/Serverside" when it comes to web-development?

    - by Mercfh
In the Web development world, what exactly do backend/server-side programmers do? I guess I don't really understand the whole concept. I've done the HTML/CSS layouts and website design and a little bit of SQL with PHP (still enhancing my skills, it's more of a side project for me). I've also done a small amount of JavaScript/JQuery. But I don't understand the "backend" work, such as the scripting languages (Rails/Python/etc) and such. What exactly do you "do" with them? Are there any books on the subject? I'm not even sure what it means. Is it kinda like what Web Application Frameworks do? Or not so much?

  • What is the meaning of the sentence "we wanted it to be compiled so it’s not burning CPU doing the wrong stuff."

    - by user2434
I was reading this article. It has the following paragraph. And did Scala turn out to be fast? Well, what’s your definition of fast? About as fast as Java. It doesn’t have to be as fast as C or Assembly. Python is not significantly faster than Ruby. We wanted to do more with fewer machines, taking better advantage of concurrency; we wanted it to be compiled so it’s not burning CPU doing the wrong stuff. I am looking for the meaning of the last sentence. How will interpreted language make the CPU do "wrong" stuff ?

  • How to draw image in memory manually in pyglet?

    - by Mossen
    In pyglet, I want to create an image buffer in memory, then set the bytes manually, then draw it. I tried making a 3x3 red square like this in my draw() function: imageData = pyglet.image.ImageData(3, 3, 'RGB', [1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0 ]) imageData.blit(10, 10) ...but at runtime, Python complains: ctypes.ArgumentError: argument 9: <type 'exceptions.TypeError'>: wrong type Is this the right approach? Am I missing a step? How can I fix this?

  • Game Engine that allows for objects being placed in-game

    - by user185812
I am looking for a game engine with multiplayer support that allows for players to place objects in the terrain. (eg. in TF2 one can place teleporters, etc...or in minecraft one can place blocks). I don't need the placeable objects to be interactive like in TF2, but I just need an engine that won't make me code this from scratch. I have decent knowledge of Python, PHP, HTML, C++ and C# (and a small knowledge of Lua scripting, although I have only been at it for a few months) so I should be able to handle most engines. So far I have looked at UDK and Cryengine, and wasn't thrilled with either.

  • What would be a best way to code a rudimentary LIMS?

    - by Sam
Hi, I hope that I am asking the right question at right place. If not, please do not hesitate to point me to the right place. I am working in a laboratory, where computers/programming/programmers are all used only as support. But I believe that we need better information organization and management. Given the diverse information generated in the lab I believe that we need some sort of Laboratory Information Management System. Is there a good starting point to do this? I am myself not a trained programmer. I can code reasonably well in python and R, and if necessary I can learn MySql, php.

  • Complexity of a web application

    - by Dominik G
I am currently writing my Master's Thesis on maintainability of a web application. I found some methods like the "Maintainability Index" by Coleman et.al. or the "Software Maintainability Index" by Muthanna et.al. For both of them one needs to calculate the cyclomatic complexity. So my question is: Is it possible to measure the cyclomatic complexity of a web application? In my opinion there are three parts to a web application: Server code (PHP, C#, Python, Perl, etc.) Client code (JavaScript) HTML (links and forms as operators, GET-parameters and form fields as operands!?) What do you think? Is there another point of view on the complexity of web application? Did I miss something?
