• Authenticating Linked Servers - SQL Server 8 to SQL Server 10

  We have an old SQL Server 2000 database that has to be kept because it is needed on our manufacturing machines. It also maintains our employee records, since they are needed on these machines for employee logins. We also have a newer SQL Server 10 database (I think this is 2008, but I'm not sure) that we are using for newer development. I have recently learned (i.e. today) that I can link the two servers. This would allow me to access the employee tables in the newer server. Following the SF post SQL Server to SQL Server Linked Server Setup, I tried adding the link. In our SQL Server 2000 machine, I got this error: Similarly, on our SQL Server 10 machine, I got this error: The messages, though worded different, probably say the same thing: I need to authenticate, somehow. We have an Active Directory, but it is on yet another server. What, exactly, should be done here? A guy HERE<< said to check the Security settings, but did not say what else to do. Both servers are set to SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode. Now what?

• What is the collaborative screen shot/diagramming application recently featured on Hacker News and p

  A few days ago, I saw this video for a screen capture application. I'm pretty sure I followed a link from Hacker News, possibly to a Life Hacker article. The video was very short, but demonstrated how the application could be used: The application was basically a movable/resize-able view port with a button. When the button is pressed, the contents of the view port are saved to an image (basically a screen capture.) The interesting thing is what you could do after that point. One of the specific examples from the video browsed to Google maps street view, grabbed a photo of an intersection, then scribbled notes about where to meet and where the restaurant was in colored "marker." Another example shown was grabbing a house layout from from CAD tool, then scribbling notes on it. The last part of the video showed several possible uses being scrolled through the application's view port. Now, it seemed it was very easy to share these images with other people because there was some type of integration, either with their own site and/or common social websites/chat services. The application was shown running on both Windows and Mac. edit: I think there was an iPhone app, as well. Anyone know what this application is? I tried searching Google, Hacker News, and Life Hacker already. It is not Jing.

• Linking to network shares from Sharepoint pages

  So the place I work decided to set up a Microsoft Sharepoint 2010 server for task management and I (as the lowly entry-level intern) have been tasked with "figuring it out." One thing that the end users really, really, really, want is the ability to link to network shares (that are readable by anyone who will be using sharepoint) from a Sharepoint web page. In order to do this, I have edited the HTML manually with several lines that look like the following: <a href="file://server/share">Server Share</a> This works (sometimes) but the link reported by Sharepoint is often wrong and editing pages that contain these links will mangle the code such that when I open it, the code no longer looks like what it did when I last hit save (breaking all those links). Obviously this is not sustainable. I've been told by coworkers that "It worked that way at the last place I worked" but I haven't found out how yet. Any ideas on how this would work or am I barking up the wrong tree? None of the knowledge searches I've done shed any light on the sitataion. Thanks for any help! -Russell P.S. It should be noted that the file option in an href tag ONLY works in IE (which is a real bummer since we mostly use Firefox).

• ownCloud WebDAV interface seems to be broken

  I've been trying to host ownCloud on my server but everytime I try to it tells me this : Your web server is not yet properly setup to allow files synchronization because the WebDAV interface seems to be broken. Please double check the installation guides. This is my setup : Windows Server 2012 R2 IIS 8.5 PHP 5.5.11 ownCloud 6.0.3 MySQL 5.6.17 I tried google the error but I can't seem to find anything usefull. Some say I should try if this works : [hostname]/remote.php/webdav/ and yes I can navigate to this folder and I can open files from there. The calendar works and I can also just upload files the web version of ownCloud the only thing that doesn't seem to work is the sync client. • Dual Monitor Setup with Ati Radeon Hd 5700 results in unusabledesktop win7

  I have an ATI Radeon HD 5700 card which i've been using under fully updated windows 7 with its latest drivers. My monitor is a 2004 NEC LCD1703M which despite being pretty old runs fine. A friend gave me an IIYAMA ProLite E1900WS monitor (2009 or 20010 ). Both monitors are vga only. I've been using a DLDVI to VGA adapter to connect my old monitor and tested the same adapter to the new monitor and it worked fine. So I bought an HDMI to vga adapter with the purpose of having a dual monitor setup. But when both screens are connected to the card the following problem occurs: The monitor connected to the hdmi port cycles between sleep and a black screen while the other shows the operating system for about two seconds before getting black for another two seconds. I can "use" the computer (move the mouse,click,type e.t.c.) while this happens but its not something pleasant. I tried reinstalling the driver, booting with both screens connected (in which case the powerup messages and the bios are mirrored in both screens until I get to the login screen where everything falls apart) Funny thing is, everything works if I disconnect the ATI graphics card and use the onboard intel one. So, any suggestions as to what might be the problem and how I can fix it?

• Dell XPS m1530 system cannot boot need 130w or greater

  I have a Dell XPS M1530 and I lost my old AC adapter but ordered a new one. For the longest time it always had a battery charge so I was able to boot into the OS but now it is completely dead. I have a generic charger that slowly charged the laptop when it was in the OS but does not when the computer is off. When I boot up I get the following error: The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. The system can only boot with a 130 W power adapter or greater. Strike F1 key to shutdown. I cannot even enter the BIOs setup screen or boot menu, is there a way around this? I heard from the local tech that Dell has a special feature to boot from thumb drive before getting past the initial logo. I am doing my best to avoid purchasing a new charger since it worked just fine when the OS was running, I am hoping to get this thing going. Is there a way to charge the battery externally? • USB device goes to "Unknown device" randomly

  We have a kiosk that uses a bio scanner from m2sys (usb device). It scans your palm to recognize you. Every so often, maybe 1-3 times a day, the bio scanner will become an unknown device. We are unable to see any patterns or commonalities. When we unplug and plug it back in, it becomes available again. We have custom software that uses the bio scanner's software to communicate with it. We've added a crap load of logging on everything but there doesn't seem to be any pattern of when the thing shuts off. We have these devices deployed to multiple locations (100+) and they are all seeing the issues but we can not reproduce it here, at the main office. I've evaluated the software and I don't see anything. I'm thinking it's a driver or hardware issue (but we can't reproduce the issues here in the main office) or maybe environmental interference of some sort like from scan guns, automatic doors, microwaves or something else. Any ideas would be welcome. I'm looking for possible causes of the usb device becoming unknown or ways to figure out what the cause is. no other usb devices have this issue, only the scanner We've contacted the manufacturer and they blame our software We're getting help from Microsoft, but they haven't found anything OS is embedded XP http://www.m2sys.com/palm-vein-reader.htm

• Shared printer stops working on clients but not host computer

  I have a Brother MFC-7420 USB all-in-one laser printer. It is plugin via USB to my Windows 7 x64 machine. I have it shared to a few users on my home network. My wife's laptop running Vista x64 can normally print fine to the printer. However it seems that every day or two, when she pushes print on a something it just sits in her laptop's print queue and never makes it to my desktop. The only thing that seems to fix this is if she restarts her laptop. Not a big deal but this problem is sort of annoying. I don't know if this affects but the laptop is put into hibernate at night and I turn my desktop off at night. Does anyone know why this happens and if there is something easy to do to fix the problem besides restart the computer? EDIT: I was thinking that maybe my wife's laptop loses its connection to the printer. Is there a way to reset a connection to a shared printer? Or maybe reauth with the printer?

• Http-Only cookies in WebLogic: what versions support them/how and why are they supported?

  We want to make all cookies set by our webapp http-only. I only have a basic understanding of the benefits of doing this but I'm told by security people that it's a Good Thing (tm) Our app is running under JDK1.6.05 and WebLogic10.3.0 After way too much digging around Oracle's website for documentation, I've found good evidence that the first version of WebLogic to support http-only cookies is 10.3.1. By "support," I mean the cookie-http-only deployment-descriptor element. Before we go about upgrading, I'd be nice to have these questions answered: 1a) Is it accurate that WL10.3.1 is the first version to support http-only cookies and that we're out of luck with 10.3.0? 1b) If we do indeed need to upgrade, is there an easy to do so under Windows? I've heard people mention an "upgrade jar" that you just stick in the classpath but I can't find any mention of this by Oracle. Does an easy way exist, or do we need to do a full-install of the new version? 2) What does the cookie-http-only deployment-descriptor element do when enabled? Will it ensure all cookies set by the application have an http-only=true attribute? Will it do more or less? Is there anything I'll have to do programmatically? 3) Is there anything in general I should know about http-only cookies, getting my web app to take advantage of them, or other security concerns?

• DPM server 2010 Attach agent error : administrator privileges missing?

  Hello, I’m hoping you would be able to help me out with this little problem I’m having. I installed DPM 2010 in our test environment to test backups on Exchange 2010 servers. The environment includes : 1xDC 2x Exchange Server 2010 1x DPM 2010 server All of these are running on Microsoft server 2008 R2 Virtual machines. The host machines are using Hyper-v. So the problem goes like this : 1- I tried to install the agents from the DPM server GUI, which failed saying I didn’t have the correct permissions. 2- So then I tried the manual installation using the commands from : the Microsoft site http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb870935.aspx 3- The agent installation worked but when I get to attaching the agents to the DPM server it still gives me the error saying that the specified account does not have administrator rights. 4- I tried the Domain admin, users who are domain admin + local admin, single local admins. 5- I have turned off the windows firewall and made sure all the services are running. So now I’m out of ideas and really need help, the agent attach to the DPM server is the last thing that is holding me back from deploying everything to the production site. Any help would be really appreciated.

• Least CPU intensive way of streaming your screen on windows?

  Hello, sometimes I like capturing my screen for others to see. Only thing: I am playing games while I do it. I have tried a few streaming solutions where Windows Media Encoder coupled with my own Windows server appealed to me most, because I can change resolutions, etc. I also tried ustream coupled with the Flash applet and the Adobe Flash Encoder recording a Camtasia source. Camtasia has the disadvantage though that it shows the green-and-black-alternating borders and can not be targeted fullscreen. I like how xfire does it. But it doesn't work with every game, many are simply not supported. A few thoughts about this: Is there a program which captures like Fraps or XFire (based on Direct3D and OpenGL outputs) and exposes the output to a DirectShow source filter? Which brings me to: Is there hardware accelerated capturing directly from the graphics card? Maybe including direct encoding with help from OpenCL? Modern graphic cards decode BluRay content directly for example. I should have a modern enough graphics processor for this to be possible (see below). If using Windows Media Encoder: Which are the least CPU intensive settings? Which codec? Is there a newer codec than Windows Media 9? Is it less CPU intensive? I only have 7, 8 and 9 inside the Encoder Could the performance be massively increased by having a Quad-Core CPU (see below)? Bandwidth is no problem up to 1000 to 1500 kbit/s (I have 2048). • Instant connection to wireless network but delayed internet access on Mediacom with Windows 7

  I have Mediacom cable internet and their provided modem/wireless router a Cisco DPC3825. Each of the laptops experiencing the trouble have Windows 7 64-bit. When connecting to the wireless network each computer will take a second or two to connect and then toggle from "no internet access" to "internet access" however, no websites are accessible for about five minutes after connecting. After that, there aren't any problems. It happens on all 3 of the laptops I have available and none of them have problems on any other network. It seems like my phone doesn't have the delay issue when it connects. I've power cycled the modem/router along with a DNS flush. I have some of the DNS servers manually set to Google DNS addresses and one just default. I've contacted and had Mediacom support try all its tricks. They changed the SSID and password along with resetting the thing remotely a handful of times. It was installed just this month and seemed to pass the tech's checks upon installation. Nothing in the settings has been changed, but it's been exhibiting this problem from the get go. • Ctrl + 1 and Ctrl + 2 key combinations don't work

  I noticed back in August (when I got StarCraft 2) that the key combinations Ctrl + 1 and Ctrl + 2 didn't work. I thought this was weird because Ctrl + 3 and all the other combinations worked fine (including Shift + 1, etc), so I didn't think much of it; I just shrugged it off as a SC2 bug. Now, 4 months later, I decided to play a completely unrelated game--Dawn of War 2--and noticed the same thing: those two specific key combinations don't work. To make sure I wasn't going insane, I tried it in Chrome and a couple other applications, and alas, it didn't work. I remember playing strategy games over the summer before StarCraft 2 and it worked fine. Any idea as to what went wrong? My keyboard, a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 1000 (I know, insert Microsoft joke here), is a little over a year old, so I'm going to assume it's not dying until proven otherwise. Things I've tried ActiveHotkeys says the key combination is not a global hotkey. Tried another keyboard--still doesn't work. The key combinations do work in a virtual machine (tried with both Windows and Ubuntu as guests).

• Lose internet connection, yet online games continue

  For the past week or so, my internet connection has been anything but stable. Restarting my modem/router always fixes the problems, but since it has occurred so often, I'm noticing confusing patterns which I was hoping someone could help answer. My internet connection kicks out about 4-5 times a day. The sure-fire way to fix it is to restart my all-in-one modem/router. Sometimes I can diagnose the problem on my laptop which resets my wireless network adapter and fixes the problem, but not always. If that doesn't fix the problem, it usually reports that the connection between the modem and internet is the problem which requires a restart of the router. The odd thing which baffles me is that my connection is supposedly lost such that no browsers can connect to sites, yet things like online games still continue to play without issue. How is this possible? I thought maybe the game was running locally on my PC but that couldn't be the answer because I was still getting messages from other players. So my real question is: How can my internet browsers (firefox, chrome, even IE) lose connection to the internet, but other applications like online games not? Am I actually losing connection or am I mistaken? Edit: I'd also like to add that netflix on my PS3 which is directly connected to the same access point will also lose connection. So internet browsers and netflix lose their internet connection while online games continue without an issue.

• Why can't I route to some sites from my MacBook Pro that I can see from my iPad?

  I am on M1 Cable (residential) broadband in Singapore. I have an intermittent problem routing to some sites from my MacBook Pro—often Google-related sites (arduino.googlecode.com and ajax.googleapis.com right now, but sometimes even gmail.com.) This prevents StackExchange chat from working, for instance. Funny thing is, my iPad can route to those sites and they're on the same wireless network! I can ping the sites, but not traceroute to them which I find odd. That I can get through via the iPad implies the problem is with the MBP. In any case, calling M1 support is... not helpful. I get the same behaviour when I bypass the Airport Express entirely and plug the MBP directly into the cable modem.   I am trying to set up mod_proxy_balancer for routing requests to 2 jboss7-servers. For the time being I am testing this setup on my local machine, using following config in httpd.conf: ProxyRequests Off <Proxy \*> Order deny,allow Deny from all </Proxy> ProxyPass / balancer://mycluster/ stickysession=JSESSIONID|jsessionid scolonpathdelim=On <Proxy balancer://mycluster> BalancerMember http://localhost:8080 route=node1 BalancerMember http://localhost:8081 route=node2 Order allow,deny Allow from all </Proxy> and in the standalone.xml file of each jboss I have defined the jvmRoute system property: <system-properties> <property name="jvmRoute" value="node1"/> </system-properties> At http:// localhost/myapp the application is accessible but the java-session is not build up correctly. Consequently the authentication is not working. The funny thing is, that everything is working if I turn off one JBoss-instance. As I have tried a couple of settings already, I am thankful for any further suggestions.

• How do you handle data archiving?

  Backups are one thing, but long term archival is another. For example, you might be required to store emails for 7 years, or keep all project data indefinitely. I used to save archives to tape, but then I've had tapes get destroyed (drives rip the tape out). So...write to 2 tapes I hear you say. Is that what others do? Have 2 (or more) tapes of the same data for redundancy? But then the other issue is that tapes cannot usually be read by different backup software vendors. Eg if you go from Arcserve - Backup Exec - Commvault over 10 years you would need to keep all 3 systems so that you could restore old data. Likewise for hardware. Old tapes might not be barcoded. Might not be compatible with the new library etc etc. So do you keep old tape hardware AND old software just in case you might need to restore a 10 year-old file? Or...when you move to a new backup system do you migrate all archived data to the new system and re-archive it onto new tapes? That could be a huge job. Any thoughts?

• Exchange 2003 IMAP not working for some users

  We normally don't have a need for IMAP connections from outside the company network but in order to allow a one user to use IMAP on a portable device I've turned it on and opened port 993 on the firewall. When the user in question was unable to get connected I tested this using Outlook remotely. Start by creating a new IMAP account in Outlook using a test account. No problems, it worked perfectly. Now try the same thing using the account of the user who actually needs to connect and it's a no-go. Outlook simply keeps prompting for logon credentials. Next I tried using my own account and that too failed. Testing with a couple of other accounts worked perfectly. Interestingly enough, with my own account I've used IMAP on a MAC before (internally) without a problem and I'm not aware of anything that has changed which could affect IMAP on my account. Checking the user settings in ADUC showed that all accounts have the same Exchange protocol settings. Specifically, IMAP is enabled. A check of the event logs on the server reveals no entries for the connection attempts, making this kind of difficult to debug. Has anyone here encountered such a situation and, even more importantly, what caused it?

• Only one domains not resolving via Windows DNS server at multiple locations, but is at others

  I'm having quite a weird issue. Had mail delivery issues to a specific domain. After looking closer, I realized that the DNS for that domain isn't resolving via the in-house Windows 2003 SP2 DNS server. However, all other requests are working as they should. I tried it on severs at completely separate organizations on different networks(Windows 2003 AD servers). The weird thing is some of these were having the same exact issue. However using public DNS servers work. I have tried clearing the DNS cache, restarting the server, restarting the services, etc. Nothing has worked. One weird event I noticed in the DNS Server Event Logs that might be related is an event ID of 5504 with the following description: The DNS server encountered an invalid domain name in a packet from 192.33.4.12. The packet will be rejected. The event data contains the DNS packet. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. In the data section below, I can see the following mentioned: ns2.webhostingstar.com Which happens to be the nameserver for the domain in question. Several discussion threads and a MS KB have pointed to disabling EDNS. I have done this via "dnscmd /config /enableednsprobes 0" and it has not fixed the issue.

• IE 8 crashes when opening an html file from an autorun CD

  On Windows 7, when I insert a CD with a very simple HTML page referenced in the autorun.inf file, Internet Explorer 8 opens and then immediately crashes, with the error message "Internet Explorer has stopped working" and then checks for a solution. Then it says "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." On Windows Vista, IE 8 just opens and then closes silently, with no error messages or help of any kind. I have since discovered this is due to IE 8's "protected mode" and turning this off fixes the issue so that the HTML file on the CD launches normally. What I'd like to know: is there any way to get around this, so that I can launch a simple HTML file in the user's default browser, using an autorun.inf file on a CD, without first having my users open IE 8 and turn off protected mode? Perhaps the most bizarre thing is that if IE is already open when you insert the CD, the HTML page just opens--no crash. It only crashes if IE 8 happens to be closed when you insert the CD. And so a possible workaround may be to get the default browser to launch and then open the HTML file. All suggestions welcome.

• Networking Problem MrxSmb event 50 "Delayed Write Failed" errors occurring all of the sudden

  JUST THIS MONTH, we have started getting reports from a number of very stable clients that MrxSmb event id 50 errors keep appearing in their system event logs. Otherwise, they do not appear to have any networking problems except that there is a critical legacy application which seems to either be generating the MrxSmb errors or having errors occur because of them. The legacy application is comprised of 16 bit and 32 bit code and has not been changed or recompiled in many years. It has always been stable on Windows XP systems. The customers that have the problem usually have a small (5 clients or less) peer to peer network with all Windows XP systems. All service packs are loaded on the XP machines. Note: The only thing that seems to correct the problem is disabling opportunistic locking. I don't like this solution because it seems to slow down the network and sometimes causes record locking issues between users (on some networks). Also, this seems to have just started happening - as if a Windows update for XP has caused it? However, I have removed recent updates and it did not correct the issue. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

• How to transfer Windows Vista disk image to new machine

  I'm trying to upgrade a user's machine to some better hardware. I know of Easy Transfer, but I'd rather not have to reinstall all the programs that are already present. (Some of which are no longer available, anyway). Instead, I'm trying to transfer the entire disk image from one machine to the other, but I ran into issues. If I copy the partition image over to the new machine using Clonezilla, I get errors on boot saying that I need to insert the Vista install disk and run repair. I do that, but it then says that it is unable to repair whatever it is that's broken. Next, I tried to sysprep the old machine before creating the image, but sysprep fails saying that it encountered some sort of system error. Should it be possible to sysprep any arbitrary machine, or does it only work on a relatively clean install? Could it be a missing driver that is tripping me up? The new machine is a fairly stock desktop that shouldn't need any special drivers beyond what's already present in standard Vista. Are there any foolproof methods for doing this sort of thing?

• Need to get SMTP server on MS Server 2003

  Long story short, client paid networking company to move their website in house. Now I have to figure out how to email out from their website even though they don't have an SMTP server. At least until I install one. Their email is hosted with Gmail right now (the client's domain through Google App for Your Domain). I changed my code to connect as one of their users "[email protected]" and send email. Worked great for about 12 hours. All of a sudden none of the automated emails are going out now, and google is sending the emails back saying that it is a permanent failure and Message Rejected. The link they direct me to, http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=69585 is telling me that our emails look like spam. They aren't. They are emails we send to out clients about the status of their applications. Seriously, they are NOT spam. So...long story short is out the window, sorry...but I need to get an SMTP server setup inside their domain that I can send emails out of. This thing won't need to receive emails ever, and really only needs 1 email account customercare. What can I do? Will I have to have the networking company open a port in the firewall? Is there one built into Server 2003?

• No digital audio output with Asus Xonar DG

  I've purchased an Asus Xonar DG as replacement for faulty onboard audio in a Medion 8822 as it has an optical output which is all I really need to feed my HTPC. I uninstalled the previous drivers/devices, switched the PC off, inserted the Asus card, powered up, disabled the onboard audio in the BIOS, then installed the driver that came on the CD (same version as on Asus' website as of today) and everything went perfectly - no errors. I set the audio devices up in Windows and in the Asus utility (SPDIF enabled, 6-ch audio) as I would expect to see them work, but the only thing is I have no digital audio from test tones within Windows/the Asus utility, PCM audio or Dolby Digital from DVD. Analogue audio is fine. I've uninstalled things and reinstalled a couple of times now, as well as trying almost all combinations of analogue/digital outputs but can't get it sorted. Does anyone have any tips on how to get this working? This card has just been released so there isn't much out there to go on. Notes: The light on the toslink port is lit. OS is Vista 32-bit SP2 and all up to date, pretty much a fresh install with almost no 3rd party applications installed This page seems to suggest that a digital output device in Windows is not needed with Xonar cards as it was with the previous Realtek so I have it set to Analog. The only other output device is S/PDIF pass-thru
