• I'm a contract developer and I think I'm about to get screwed [closed]

  I do contract development on the side. You could say that I'm a contract developer? Considering I've only ever had one client I'd say that's not exactly the truth - more like I took a side job and needed some extra cash. It started out as a "rebuild our website and we'll pay you $10k" type project. Once that was complete (a bit over schedule, but certainly not over budget), the company hired me on as a "long term support" contractor. The contract is to go from March of this year, expiring on December 31st of this year - 10 months. Over which a payment is to be paid on the 30th of each month for a set amount. I've been fulfilling my end of the contract on all points - doing server maintenence, application and database changes, doing huge rush changes and pretty much just going above and beyond. Currently I'm in the middle of development of an iPhone mobile application (PhoneGap based) which is nearing completion (probably 3-4 weeks from submission). It has not been all peaches and flowers though. Each and every month when my paycheck comes due, there always seems to be an issue of sorts. These issues did not occur during the initial project, only during the support contract. The actual contract states that my check should be mailed out on the 30th of the month. I have received my check on time approximately once (on time being about 2-3 days within the 30th). I've received my paycheck as late as the 15th of the next month - over two weeks late. I've put up with it because I need the paycheck. There have been promises and promises of "we'll send it out on time next time! I promise" - only to receive it just as late the next month. When I ask about payment they give me a vibe like "why are you only worried about money?" - unfortunately I don't have the luxury of not worrying about money. The last straw was with my August payment, which should have been mailed on August 30th. I received it on September 12th. The reason for the delay? "USPS is delaying it man! we sent it out on the 1st!" is the reason I got. When I finally got the check in the mail, the postage on the envelope was marked September 10th - the date it was run through the postage machine. I've been outright lied to, at this point. I carry on working, because again - I need a paycheck. I orchestrated the move of our application to a new server, developed a bunch of new changes and continued work on the iPhone app. All told I probably went over my hourly allotment (I'm paid for 40 hours a month, I probably put in at least 50). On Saturday, the 1st, I gave the main contact at the company (a company of 3, by the way - this is not some big corporation) a ring and filled him in on the status of my work for the past two weeks. Unusually I hadn't heard from him since the middle of September. His response was "oh... well, that is nice and uh.. good job. well, we've been talking within the company about things and we've certainly got some decisions ahead of us..." - not verbatim but you get the idea (I hope?). I got out of this conversation that the site is not doing very well (which it's not) and they're considering pulling the plug. Crap, this contract is going to end early - there goes Christmas! Fine, that's alright, no problem. I'll get paid for the last months work and call it a day. Unfortunately I still haven't gotten last months check, and I'm getting dicked around now. "Oh.. we had problems transferring funds, we'll try and mail it out tomorrow" and "I left a VM with the finance guy, but I can't get ahold of him". So I'm getting the feeling I'm not getting paid for all the work I put in for September. This is obviously breach of contract, and I am pissed. Thinking irrationally, I considered changing all their passwords and holding their stuff hostage. Before I think it through (by the way, I am NOT going to do this, realized it would probably get me in trouble), I go and try some passwords for our various accounts. Google Apps? Oh, I'm no longer administrator here. Godaddy? Whoops, invalid password. Disqus? Nope, invalid password here too. Google Adsense / Analytics? Invalid password. Dedicated server account manager? Invalid password. Now, I have the servers root password - I just built the box last week and haven't had a chance to send the guy the root password. Wasn't in a rush, I manage the server and they never touch it. Now all of a sudden all the passwords except this one are changed; the writing is on the wall - I am out. Here's the conundrum. I have the root password, they do not. If I give them this password all the leverage I have is gone, out the door and out of my hands. During this argument of why am I not getting paid the guy sends me an email saying "oh by the way, what's the root username and password to the server?". Considering he knows absolutely nothing, I gave him an "admin" account which really has almost no rights. I still have exclusive access to the server, I just don't know where to go. I can hold their data hostage, but I'm almost positive this is the wrong thing to do. I'd consider it blackmail, regardless of whether or not I have gotten paid yet. I can "break" something on the server and give them the whole "well, if you were paying me I could fix it!" spiel. This works from a "well he's not holding their stuff hostage" point of view, but what stops them from hiring some one else to just fix the issue at hand? For all I know the guys nephew is a "l33t hax0r" and can figure it out for free. I can give in, document as much as I can and take him to small claims court. This is breach of contract, I'm not getting paid. I have a case, right? ???? Does anyone have any experience in this? What can I do? What are my options? I'm broke, I can't afford a lawyer and I can barely afford not getting this paycheck. My wife doesn't work (I work two jobs so she doesn't have to work - we have a 1 year old) and is already looking at getting a part time job to cover the bills. Long term we'll be fine, but this has pissed me off beyond belief! Help me out, I'm about to get screwed.

• Who could ask for more with LESS CSS? (Part 2 of 3&ndash;Setup)

  Welcome to part two in my series covering the LESS CSS language.  In the first post, I covered the two major CSS precompiled languages - LESS and SASS to a small extent, iterating over some of the features that you could expect to find in them.  In this post, I will go a little further in depth into the setup and execution of using the LESS framework. Introduction It really doesn’t take too much to get LESS working in your project.  The basic workflow will be including the necessary translator in your project, defining bundles for the LESS files, add the necessary code to your layouts.cshtml file, and finally add in all your necessary styles to the LESS files!  Lets get started… New Project Just like all great experiments in Visual Studio, start up a File > New Project, and create a new MVC 4 Web Application.  The Base Package After you have the new project spun up, use the Nuget Package Manager to install the Bundle Transformer: LESS package. This will take care of installing the main translator that we will be using for LESS code (dotless which is another Nuget package), as well as the core framework for the Bundle Transformer library.  The installation will come up with some instructions in a readme file on how to modify your web.config to handle all your *.less requests through the Bundle Transformer, which passes the translating onto dotless. Where To Put These LESS Files?! This step isn’t really a requirement, however I find that I don’t like how ASP.Net MVC just has a content directory where they store CSS, content images, css images….  In my project, I went ahead and created a new directory just for styles – LESS files, CSS files, and images that are only referenced in LESS or CSS.  Ignore the MVC directory as this was my testbed for another project I was working on at the same time.  As you can see here, I have: A top level directory for images which contains only images used in a page A top level directory for scripts A top level directory for Styles A few directories for plugins I am using (Colrizr, JQueryUI, Farbtastic) Multiple *.less files for different functions (I’ll go over these in a minute) I find that this layout offers the best separation of content types.  Bring Out Your Bundles! The next thing that we need to do is add in the necessary code for the bundling of these LESS files.  Go ahead and open your BundleConfig.cs file, usually located in the /App_Start/ folder of the project.  As you will see in a minute, instead of using the method Microsoft does in the base MVC 4 project, I change things up a bit.  Define Constants The first thing I do is define constants for each of the virtual paths that will be used in the bundler: The main reason is that I hate magic strings in my program, so the fact that you first defined a virtual path in the BundleConfig file, and then used that path in the _Layout.cshtml file really irked me. Add Bundles to the BundleCollection Next, I am going to define the bundles for my styles in my AddStyleBundles method: That is all it takes to get all of my styles in play with LESS.  The CssTransformer and NullOrderer types come from the Bundle Transformer we grabbed earlier.  If we didn’t use that package, we would have to write our own function (not too hard, but why do it if it’s been done). I use the site.less file as my main hub for LESS - I will cover that more in the next section. Add Bundles To Layout.cshtml File With the constants in the BundleConfig file, instead of having to use the same magic string I defined for the bundle virtual path, I am able to do this: Notice here that besides the RenderSection magic strings (something I am working on in another side project), all of the bundles are now based on const strings.  If I need to change the virtual path, I only have to do it in one place.  Nifty! Get Started! We are now ready to roll!  As I said in the previous section, I use the site.less file as a central hub for my styles: As seen here, I have a reset.css file which is a simple CSS reset.  Next, I have created a file for managing all my color variables – colors.less: Here, you can see some of the standards I started to use, in this case for color variables.  I define all color variables with the @col prefix.  Currently, I am going for verbose variable names. The next file imported is my font.less file that defines the typeface information for the site: Simple enough.  A couple of imports for fonts from Google, and then declaring variables for use throughout LESS.  I also set up the heading sizes, margins, etc..  You can also see my current standardization for font declaration strings – @font. Next, I pull in a mixins.less file that I grabbed from the Twitter Bootstrap library that gives some useful parameterized mixins for use such as border-radius, gradient, box-shadow, etc… The common.less file is a file that just contains items that I will be defining that can be used across all my LESS files.  Kind of like my own mixins or font-helpers: Finally I have my layout.less file that contains all of my definitions for general site layout – width, main/sidebar widths, footer layout, etc: That’s it!  For the rest of my one off definitions/corrections, I am currently putting them into the site.less file beneath my original imports Note Probably my favorite side effect of using the LESS handler/translator while bundling is that it also does a CSS checkup when rendering…  See, when your web.config is set to debug, bundling will output the url to the direct less file, not the bundle, and the http handler intercepts the call, compiles the less, and returns the result.  If there is an error in your LESS code, the CSS file can be returned empty, or may have the error output as a comment on the first couple lines. If you have the web.config set to not debug, then if there is an error in your code, you will end up with the usual ASP.Net exception page (unless you catch the exception of course), with information regarding the failure of the conversion, such as brace mismatch, undefined variable, etc…  I find it nifty. • Sending notification after an event has remained open for a specified period

  Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Enterprise Manager (EM) 12c allows you to create an incident rule to send a notification and/or create an incident after an event has been open for a specified period. Such an incident rule will help prevent premature alerts on issues that may correct themselves within a certain amount of time. For example, there are some agents in an unstable network area, and often there are communication failures between the agents and the OMS lasting three, four minutes at a time. In this scenario, you may only want to receive alerts after an agent in that area has been in the Agent Unreachable status for at least five minutes. Note: Many non-target availability metrics allow users to specify the “number of occurrences” or the number of consecutive times metric values reach thresholds before a notification is sent. It is best to use the feature for such metrics. This article provides a step-by-step guide for creating an incident rule set to cater for the above scenario, that is, to create an incident and send a notification after the Agent Unreachable event has remained open for a five-minute duration. Steps to create the incident rule 1.     Log on to the console and navigate to Setup -> Incidents -> Incident Rules. Note: A non-super user requires the Create Enterprise Rule Set privilege, which is a resource privilege, to create an incident rule. The Incident Rules - All Enterprise Rules page displays. 2.     Click Create Rule Set … The Create Rule Set page displays. 3.     Enter a name for the rule set (e.g. Rule set for agents in flaky network areas), optionally enter a description, and leave everything else at default values, and click + Add. The Search and Select: Targets page pops up. Note:  While you can create a rule set for individual targets, it is a best practice to use a group for this purpose. 4.     Select an appropriate group, e.g. the AgentsInFlakyNework group. The Select button becomes enabled, click the button. The Create Rule Set page displays. 5.     Leave everything at default values, and click the Rules tab. The Create Rule Set page displays. 6.     Click Create… The Select Type of Rule to Create page pops up. 7.     Leave the Incoming events and updates to events option selected, and click Continue. The Create New Rule : Select Events page displays. 8.     Select Target Availability from the Type drop-down list. The page shows more options for Target Availability. 9.     Select the Specific events of type Target Availability option, and click + Add. The Select Target Availability events page pops up. 10.   Select Agent from the Target Type dropdown list. The page expands. 11.   Click the Agent unreachable checkbox, and click OK. Note: If you want to also receive a notification when the event is cleared, click the Agent unreachable end checkbox as well before clicking OK. The Create New Rule : Select Events page displays. 12.   Click Next. The Create New Rule : Add Actions page displays. 13.   Click + Add. The Add Actions page displays. 14.   Do the following: a.     Select the Only execute the actions if specified conditions match option (You don’t want the action to trigger always). The following options appear in the Conditions for Actions section. b.     Select the Event has been open for specified duration option. The Conditions for actions section expands. c.     Change the values of Event has been open for to 5 Minutes as shown below. d.     In the Create Incident or Update Incident section, click the Create Incident checkbox as following: e.     In the Notifications section, enter an appropriate EM user or email address in the E-mail To field. f.     Click Continue (in the top right hand corner). The Create New Rule : Add Actions page displays. 15.   Click Next. The Create New Rule : Specify name and Description page displays. 16.   Enter a rule name, and click Next. The Create New Rule : Review page appears. 17.   Click Continue, and proceed to save the rule set. The incident rule set creation completes. After one of the agents in the group specified in the rule set is stopped for over 5 minutes, EM will send a mail notification and create an incident as shown in the following screenshot. In conclusion, you have seen the steps to create an example incident rule set that only creates an incident and triggers a notification after an event has been open for a specified period. Such an incident rule can help prevent unnecessary incidents and alert notifications leaving EM administrators time to more important tasks. - Loc Nhan

• ASP.NET MVC & Silverlight development - on Ubuntu

  I recently moved my working environment from Windows 7 to Ubuntu, and enjoy this every minute of my working day. My work is currently to develop ASP.NET MVC and Silverlight applications. Thus, important Windows stuff is being still run in VirtualBox (such as IIS, MSSQL, Silverlight 3, and legacy COM stuff). For now, I use Visual Studio under VirtualBox as editor/IDE/debugger. But since I prefer Ubuntu fonts and UI much more I'd like to move at least editor (and better IDE) to native Ubuntu. Things I have already done: I store project files in my home folder and run Visual Studio from \vboxsvr share. With few tricks for ASP.NET it works. I use svn on Ubuntu. I test my ASP.NET MVC site using FireFox/FireBug on Ubuntu. What I need on Ubuntu: SQL client to manage MSSQL. I mostly need querying, but I would miss SQL intellisense support. I enjoy command-line svn a lot, but there're times when it's not enough (e.g. view files / check diffs / selectively commit at the sames time) so I wonder if there're any addons - I don't mean replacement for svn, just addons for rare cases like above. I wonder if there're editors that can provide some C# intellisense. Yes I know about MonoDevelop, but will it provide intellisense without compiling (since I'm going to compile remotely in Win box)? And pretty big topic, what's the best way (editor/IDE) to do "folder-based" development? What I mean: The project is /trunk. Everything is there. I don't want to manually add files to project or like that. The project is the folder and files down there. Main task is to edit files of course. I need a quick way to open / search for files in the project. Like in Resharper, I can click Ctrl-Shift-T (IIRC) and just type file name, a list of matching files in the project folder and below is shown. For example, gedit has file tree browser, but I can't quickly type XYZ to find all XYZ files there; moreover it doesn't automatically switch focus to/from editor; so it's more mouse-oriented; I need 100% keyboard way. I need syntax highlighting for C#/HTML/JS. Most importantly, I need HTML tags autocompletion. I can live without it, but I'll be sorry. I need to run compilation remotely (via ssh I think, invoking NAnt script which does MSBuild) and grab results such as errors and warnings, and I'd prefer to quickly go to error line/file. In short, I need to edit/search/open/svn/compile/run files in some folder. Looks like a case for command-line, but imaging I'm in /trunk and want to open file.cs inside /trunk/foo/bar/boo/far, I wouldn't want to type all this path even with bash autocompletion help. I'd prefer to enter :open file.cs, and maybe then select from list of file.cs and file1.cs. Well, maybe I'll add more soon. Actually, I don't have exact requirements; for example, I don't even know if I need to ask for IDE or editor; or should it have svn support integrated or I need to use it from console; do people work with files from console (search/commit/delete/etc) and open editor from there, or they work from editor/IDE and manage files (search/commit/delete) from there? What's better? I have a feeling that vim might have everything I need. I'd like to confirm that, before I spend a lot of time learning it. No I don't want Emacs. Any other IDE? I like Eclipse, but is it good for such stuff? And after all, do you feel like it's a good way to go? I enjoy Ubuntu, enjoy learning new stuff, and Ubuntu + Windows in VirtualBox actually runs faster than Windows7 on my mahcine, but maybe I need to keep development (editor/files management/etc) in Windows/VirtualBox only, leaving other stuff for Ubuntu?

• Strange exception when connecting to a WCF service via a proxy server

  The exception "This operation is not supported for a relative URI." occurs in the following situation: I have a WCF service: [ServiceContract(ProtectionLevel=ProtectionLevel.None)] public interface IMyService { [OperationContract] [FaultContract(typeof(MyFault))] List<MyDto> MyOperation(int param); // other operations } public class MyService : IMyService { public List<MyDto> MyOperation(int param) { // Do the business stuff and return a list of MyDto } // other implementations } MyFault and MyDto are two very simple classes marked with [DataContract] attribute and each only having three [DataMember] of type string, int and int?. This service is hosted in IIS 7.0 on a Win 2008 Server along with an ASP.NET application. I am using an SVC file MyService.svc which is located directly in the root of the web site. When I run this client application on my development PC with exactly the same config, with the exception that I remove proxyAddress="10.20.30.40:8080" from the bindings the operation works without problems. Now I really don't know what specifying a proxy server address might have to do with absolute or relative URIs. The use of the proxy server or not is the only difference I can see when running the client on the production or on the development machine. • Cannot use WCF service from windows mobile 5: no endpoint found.

  Hi All, I'm trying to figure out how to call a WCF service from a windows smart phone. I have a very simple smartphone console app, which does nothing but launch and make 1 call to the service. The service simply returns a string. I am able to instantiate the proxy class but when i call the method it throws an exception: There was no endpoint listening at http://mypcname/Service1.svc/basic that could accept the message. This is often caused by an incorrect address or SOAP action. See InnerException, if present, for more details. The inner exception: Could not establish connection to network. I've tried to follow this tutorial on setting up services with windows mobile. I've used the NetCFSvcUtil to create the proxy classes. I have the service running on IIS on my machine and had the Util consume the wsdl from that location. I've created a basic http binding as suggested in the article and i think i've pointed the proxy at the correct uri. Here some sections of relevant code in case it's helpful to see. If anyone has any suggestions, i'd really appreciate it. I'm not sure what else i can poke at to get this thing to work. Thanks! • Getting Rails Application Running Under IronRuby Rack

  Anyone else playing with ironruby? I have successfully got the IronRuby.Rails.Example project running on my local machine under IIS 5.1. I am now attempting to get my own demo rails site running in the same way. My web.config is slightly different from the example project. I am attempting to only use what was distributed with IronRuby 1.0 and what I have installed using gems.   Hey, I've been building a silverlight application and a WCF service for a while now and recently tried to host them in IIS7. I installed IIS7 on Windows Server 2008 R2 and added these two application to my default website. I am having a number of problems so im hoping one of you can help out... 1) The silverlight and WCF service applications do not work with pass-through authentication. I need to "connect as" the administrator server account when setting up the application. I read online that you should only need to use the "connect as" field when you are connecting to another computer. If i dont supply the admin credentials i get this error. Do i have to set up permissions somewhere else? HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. I have a problem where it seems that the HttpWebRequest class in the framework is not correctly parsing the cookies from a web response. • Custom binding with WCF

  I have a wcf service where i have to implement the call backs and also i need to host the wcf service on the IIS 6.0, since IIS6.0 doesnot support the net.tcp binding, i decided to go for the custom binding. The reasons for going for custom binding is that the service is accessed by different clients in different timezones. Using custom binding i can set the allowed clock skew time to other values other than the default one. Whenever I run it on my local test server (IIS on Windows 7) it runs exactly the way it should with no errors. • Users being forced to re-login randomly, before session and auth ticket timeout values are reached

  I'm having reports and complaints from my user that they will be using a screen and get kicked back to the login screen immediately on their next request. It doesn't happen all the time but randomly. After looking at the Web server the error that shows up in the application event log is: Event code: 4005 Event message: Forms authentication failed for the request. Reason: The ticket supplied has expired. Everything that I read starts out with people asking about web gardens or load balancing. We are not using either of those. We're a single Windows 2003 (32-bit OS, 64-bit hardware) Server with IIS6. This is the only website on this server too. This behavior does not generate any application exceptions or visible issues to the user. They just get booted back to the login screen and are forced to login. As you can imagine this is extremely annoying and counter-productive for our users. Here's what I have set in my web.config for the application in the root: <authentication mode="Forms"> <forms name=".TcaNet" protection="All" timeout="40" loginUrl="~/Login.aspx" defaultUrl="~/MyHome.aspx" path="/" slidingExpiration="true" requireSSL="false" /> </authentication> I have also read that if you have some locations setup that no longer exist or are bogus you could have issues. I've read some things that say you should have the authentication timeout shorter (40) than the session timeout (45) to avoid possible complications. Either way we have users that get kicked to the login screen a minute or two after their last action. So the session definitely should not be expiring. Update 2/23/09: I've since set the session timeout and authentication ticket timeout values to both be 45 and the problem still seems to be happening. The only other web.config in the application is in 1 virtual directory that hosts Community Server.   I use Net_Gearman from PECL, Gearmand 1.1.11 and Gearman Manager. • All downloads being interrupted

  System: Windows 7 Professional 64bit. 8GB RAM, Intel i5-2400 CPU, +300GB free on the hard drive. AVG Internet Security 2012 (enabled & disabled, with firewall enabled and disabled - no effect for either). This computer is less than a year old. Network: This problem is occurring on a single computer on a network with multiple computers. The router is a Motorola Netopia 3347-02 (DSL Modem/Wireless Router combined). The computer is plugged in directly to the modem, other computers are using the wireless successfully. The router has been reset. The only thing odd about the connection between the router and computer is that it is configured to allow RDP through, so it is assigned a static IP by the router and port forwarding is enabled for port 3389. Also, though I doubt it matters, a second wireless router is active behind this router providing a second network that some computers in the area use without issues. Details: All downloads initiated on this specific computer eventually fail, this includes streaming from youtube, specialized downloads (itunes), downloads from websites, FTP downloads, etc. Failure occurs with all browsers, but in chrome this is the process it takes: 1) Download begins normally, 2) At some point between (observed) 7MBs and 229MBs the download stops progressing (at this point, if watching chrome's task manager, you can see the network activity for the downloading tab drop to 0kps), 3) for some time the download sits there still attempting to complete, but will eventually display "123,049,871/0 B, Interrupted" (where the number is whatever it actually got to). The file I am using to test this is a very large .zip file located on a server I control, but the problem seems to occur on any site. The amount downloaded is completely random, and seems to be more time-based than anything (if I start a download immediately after the last one fails, it tends to get further than the last one). Small files can get through for this reason, though they can fail as well. In a test where I simultaneously downloaded the same file via HTTP (chrome) and FTP (windows explorer), both downloads failed at the same instant, though explorer displayed "Connection timed out" several minutes before chrome finally showed the download as interrupted. • Mac OS X Server Open Directory does not push Software Update settings to clients

  I have an Xserve G5 running Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 configured as an Open Directory master. I have also enabled and configured Software Update service on the machine. The SUS is configured to serve Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard clients (see http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10297359#10297359) The clients bound to the OD are a variety of Mac's running OS X 10.4, 10.5 or 10.6. In Workgroup Manager, I have created 3 machine groups for each client OS. Each group is configured with a custom SUS URL, and the managed client computers are members accordingly (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10493154#10493154) My problem is that the server pushes the SUS settings to some of the client machines, but not all. When I first configured all this stuff on the server (a few weeks ago) I was closely monitoring a few of the client machines to confirm that they received the custom settings. I noticed that some of the clients (10.4/5/6 alike) seemed to get the settings immediately, others didn't show the new settings until after a reboot. As I said, results are mixed across OS's, but some clients will not "sync" at all. My immediate thought was to unbind/rebind the problematic machines. I did this on several client computers with no success. For example, today I was working on one of the Tiger clients. I noticed it was not pointed at my local SUS, so I checked the OD binding; it was fine. Just to be sure I unbound the machine. Next, I checked WM and confirmed the computer record was gone. I noticed the machine group still had a residual (broken?) member from the unbound client; I manually removed this. Finally, I re-bound the client to OD and re-added the machine to it's correct group in WM. Unfortunately, the client still pings apple's SUS for updates. Just to play it safe I rebooted the client, but to no avail, it will not see my local SUS. To confirm that there is nothing wrong with the server, or the client's connection to it, forcefully pointed the machine at my SUS: sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL "$LOCAL_SUS_URL" and the machine successfully updated off my local server. Great, successful updates, but problem not solved. I've done exhaustive reading on discussions.apple.com (not saying I read everything, I'm just saying I have read a lot) without a good answer. The discouraging thing is that a lot of OD problems I've read about only result in the sysadmin completely reinstalling the server, or OD, or some other similarly heavy-handed operation. At this point, I am not willing to go that route. I still have hope that I can find the reason for this flaky behavior. If anyone can point me in a helpful direction it would be much appreciated. EDIT: Indeed, some files are being pushed to the client: # from client machine: $ sudo find /Library -type f -name com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist /Library/Managed Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist /Library/Managed Preferences/username/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist A few weeks ago, prior to my (previously mentioned) modifications, the SUS was still running "stock". Which meant it could not serve SL (10.6) machines. At that time, the Software Update settings were setup in WM under User Groups. This didn't make any sense because some users work on multiple machines with different OS's. Before creating Machine Groups in WM, I deleted all the SU settings from the User Group Preferences. This just makes the whole thing more confusing, because when I see a file here: /Library/Managed Preferences/username/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist I assume it's still remaining from the "old" settings, because I wouldn't think a Machine Setting belongs there. • Login loop in Snow Leopard

  I can't get out of a login loop of a particular admin user. After entering the password the login screen is shown again after about a minute. Other users work fine. It started happening after a simple reboot. Can you please help me? Thank you! Tried to no avail: Change the password Remove the password Repair disk (no errors) Boot in safe mode Reinstall Snow Leopard and updating to 10.6.6 Remove content of ~/Library/Caches Removed content of ~/Library/Preferences Replaced /etc/authorization with Install DVD copy The system.log mentions a crash report. In saslauthd I configured the LDAP search filter to use, but it looks like pam completely ignores it. The weird thing is, I do get an error when I rename or remove /etc/saslauthd.conf, but when the file exists it seems happily ignored... The filter in slapd.log seems to be taken from /etc/ldap.conf. • Postfix configuration - Uing virtual min but server is bouncing back my mail.

  I have no experience in setting up postfix, and thought virtualmin minght do the legwork for me. Appears not. When I try to send mail to the domain (either [email protected] [email protected] or [email protected]) I get the following message returned This is the mail system at host dedq239.localdomain. I'm sorry to have to inform you that your message could not be delivered to one or more recipients. It's attached below. For further assistance, please send mail to <postmaster> If you do so, please include this problem report. You can delete your own text from the attached returned message. It seems that the mail gets to my server but the server fails to locally deliver the message to the correct user. (This is a guess, truthfully I have no idea what is happening). I have checked my virtual alias table and it seems to be set up correctly (I can post if this would be helpful). Can anyone give me a clue as to the next step? • Why does Process Explorer cause highly targeted failure of some applications / basic UI functions in a high-power EC2 Windows instance?

  Update: I have determined that Process Explorer itself - the program I am using to debug a performance issue - seems to be the cause of the issue. See note, with updated question, at end. I am running a high-power (cc2.8xlarge) Amazon AWS EC2 Windows instance off of a boot EBS volume, provisioned at 2500 PIOPS, which was created from a snapshot of a previous boot volume. My purpose with the instance is to use it as a development workstation with many developer tools installed, such as Visual Studio, a local XAMPP stack, etc. I have upwards of 40 programs installed on the machine. The usability of the instance as a development machine often works quite well. The RDP lag is adequately small. I have used it for hours on end without problems for some of my most intense development tasks. As a result, I have just purchased a reserved instance, and I opted to rebuild my development machine starting from scratch with a Windows Server 2012 AMI. After having installed all of my desired/required applications for development over this past week, again the machine seems to often work well and I have worked for up to an hour at a time without problems doing heavy development work. However, I continue to run into catastrophic OS usability issues that may prevent me from being able to rely on this machine as a development machine. I would like to track down the source of the problem, if there is an easily identifiable source. (Update: I have tracked down the source to be Process Explorer, the very program I was using to debug the problem. See update at end.) The issues are as follows. (These are some primary examples) Some applications, after a period of adequate responsiveness, suddenly begin to respond very, very slowly to basic user interface actions such as clicking on menus and pressing Ctrl-Tab to switch between open documents. Two examples are UltraEdit and PhpEd. It typically takes ~2 seconds for a menu to appear, and ~4 seconds to switch between open documents. Additionally, insertion point motion in the editor is lagged by upwards of ~2 seconds. Process Explorer, which I am using to help debug the problem, seems to run acceptably for a couple of minutes, but on multiple occasions Process Explorer itself hangs completely. It hangs at the same time as the problems noted above. When it hangs, it is 100% unresponsive. Clicking on its taskbar icon neither causes it to come to the top or go behind, and its viewable area is filled with nothing but a region partially containing pure white and partially containing incomplete windows widgets that are unreadable, and that never change. Waiting 10 minutes does not clear the problem. Attempting to force-quit Process Explorer by right-clicking on its taskbar icon and choosing "Close Window" takes about 5 full minutes to exit (Process Explorer itself can't be used to exit Process Explorer, and it is registered as a Task Manager substitute). Other programs work just fine during this time. For example, Chrome tabs flip very quickly back and forth, menus pop open instantly, web pages load quickly, and typing in forms/web applications inside the browser works promptly. Another example of an application that works crisply is Filemaker - its menus open instantly, and switching views in this application occurs promptly. Other applications also work without issue. Also, switching between applications occurs promptly as well. It is only a handful of applications that exhibit the problem, with some primary examples given above. At first I thought that EBS IOPS might be a problem. Therefore, I ran Performance Monitor, and watched the "Disk Transfers/sec" monitor in real time. At no point did this measure come anywhere close to hitting the 2500 PIOPS provisioned for the EBS volume. The RAM was also well under the limit (~10 GB used out of 60 GB). I did notice that one CPU core (out of 32 logical cores) was fully thrashing at 100% (i.e., ~3.1%) during the problematic periods. This seems to indicate that a single CPU core is handling the menus / flipping between open documents (for some applications only) / managing the Process Explorer user interface, and that this single core was hosed for some reason during the problematic periods. Also note that I have a desktop workstation (Windows 7) that I also use as a development machine, via a remote connection, with a nearly identical set of programs installed, and this desktop workstation does not exhibit any of the problems I've discussed above. I have been using it heavily for well over a year now. Any suggestions regarding either the source of the problem, or steps I might take to investigate the source of the problem, would be appreciated. Thanks. Note: After extensive testing & investigation, I have noticed that when I quit Process Explorer, the problem vanishes and the system performance returns to normal, and then reappears quickly when I run Process Explorer again (note: again, the performance problems only appear for a subset of applications - other applications work perfectly fine during the same period).
