• How to setup NTFS ACL with Acces Based Enumeration

  We're in the process of migrating from Novell Netware to Windows 2K8 R2 infrastructure (AD, File server, print server... etc) My question is about ACL. While Netware and Windows are totally different, I want to be sure my thnking is good before screwing everything up! There's a scenario : F: | +-- DATA <= Shared as DATA with Access based enumeration | +-- Folder 1 +-- Team 1's Folder +-- Team 2's Folder ... In that case, by default, rights are herited from the F: to the deepest folders. What we want : Administrators group have full control top - down. From DATA, ABE list only folders that users have access. (ex. : I'm in group Team 2, I see Team 2's Folder). From what I understand, at DATA I remove all NTFS ACL to be herited (ex. Users Group), be sure to keep Administrators Group and SYSTEM user. After that, grant Full control (or any right needed) on each folder to Groups or Users that have to have access. Does I'm wrong ? Anything I should take care of ? Any help to my understanding will be very appreciated. Regards.

  Hi, I have console application. In that i have some process that fetch the data from database through different layers ( business and Data access). stores the fetched data in respective objects. Like if data is fetched for student then this data will store (assigned ) to Student object. same for school. and them a delegate call the certain method that generates outputs as per requirement. This process will execute many times say 10 times. Ok? I want to run simultaneously this process. not one will start, it will finish and then second will start. I want after starting 1'st process, just 2'nd , 3rd....10'th must be start. Means it should be multithreading. how can i achieve this ? is that will give me error while connection with data base open and close ? I have tried this concept . but when thread 1'st is starting then data will fetched for thread 1 will stored in its respective (student , school) objects. ok? when simultaneous 2'nd thread starts , but the data is changing of 1'st object ,while control flowing in program. What have to do?

  I am building a school management app where they track student tardiness and absences. I've got three entities to help me in this. A Students entity (first name, last name, ID, etc.); a SystemAbsenceTypes entity with SystemAbsenceTypeID values for Late, Absent-with-Reason, Absent-without-Reason; and a cross-reference table called StudentAbsences (matching the student IDs with the absence-type ID, plus a date, and a Notes field). What I want to do is query my entities for a given student, and then add up the number of each kind of Absence, for a given date range. I prepare my currentStudent object without a problem, then I do this... Me.Data.LoadProperty(currentStudent, "StudentAbsences") 'Loads the cross-ref data lblDaysLate.Text = (From ab In currentStudent.StudentAbsences Where ab.SystemAbsenceTypes.SystemAbsenceTypeID = Common.enuStudentAbsenceTypes.Late).Count.ToString ...and this second line fails, complaining it has no value for an object. I presume the problem is that while it DOES see that there are (let's say) four absences for the currentStudent (ie, currentStudent.StudentAbsences.Count = 4) -- it can't yet "peer into" each one of the absences to look at its type. How do I use .Expand or .LoadProperty to make this happen? I tried fiddling with .LoadProperty but it doesn't take a two-level syntax like so... Data.LoadProperty(currentStudent,"StudentAbsences.SystemAbsenceTypeID") or the like. Is there some other technique?

• Ruby array, javascript and json issue

  Hey all, I am unable to get a highcharts plugin to render a chart in a rails application: http://github.com/loudpixel/highcharts-rails I believe it has something to do with the sql queries to the database placed in a ruby array, which the javascript is unable to intepret.   Please bare with me this is difficult to explain xD http://img90.imageshack.us/i/croppercapture1.png/ This is based on an undergraduate degree course where a student takes many units (say 4 core units and 1 optional unit per year). tblAwardCoreUnits and tblAwardOptUnits store which units are optional and core for which award, hence the relationship to tblAward and tblStudentCoreUnits and tblStudentOptUnits store the particular instances of those units which a particular student is taking. Secondly, a unit can have multiple events (say a lecture and a unit) and each of those events has sessions in which a student can attend, hence tblEvents, tblSessions and tblAttendances. The query I am trying to produce is to get a list of all level one students, grouped by their award that lists the percentage of attendances in all the units in the current level. I've tried and tried with this and the following is the best I've managed to come up with so far... I'd REALLY appreciate any help you can give with this! But when I do this. The labels will be visible even if I did not yet click on the button that will make it visible(but without the checkboxes). And when I click on that button, that's the only time when the checkbox will appear on the left side of the labels. The checkbox is ok, but the label is not. And the javascript is working properly. What do I do so that the checkbox and label will go together?

• Modify MySQL INSERT statement to omit the insertion of certain rows

  I'm trying to expand a little on a statement that I received help with last week. As you can see, I'm setting up a temporary table and inserting rows of student data from a recently administered test for a few dozen schools. When the rows are inserted, they are sorted by the score (totpct_stu, high to low) and the row_number is added, with 1 representing the highest score, etc. I've learned that there were some problems at school #9999 in SMITH's class (every student made a perfect score and they were the only students in the district to do so). So, I do not want to import SMITH's class. As you can see, I DELETED SMITH's class, but this messed up the row numbering for the remainder of student at the school (e.g., high score row_number is now 20, not 1). How can I modify the INSERT statement so as to not insert this class? Thanks! I tried the following code instead but I also get an Exception. My original question was asked on Aardvark and can be read bellow: var allStudents = from s in dc.students select s; List thestudents = new List(); foreach (student s in allStudents) { if (s.courses.Contains(theCourse)) { thestudents.Add(s); } } I did a right click, "run custom tool" on my dbml and checked my names of my tables and entities. The project compiles but I get an Exception at runtime on this line: "if (s.courses.Contains(theCourse))" Any ideas? Original question on Aardvark: How do I do a LinqToSQL query that gives me this: I want to select all students that attended a certain lesson. The lesson is from a certain course. So select the course the lesson is from. Now select all the students that are following that course. There is a many-to-many relationship between the students and the courses table in my DB. • Why is my django bulk database population so slow and frequently failing?

  I decided I'd like to use django's model system rather than coding raw SQL to interface with my database, but I am having a problem that surely is avoidable. My models.py contains: class Student(models.Model): student_id = models.IntegerField(unique = True) form = models.CharField(max_length = 10) preferred = models.CharField(max_length = 70) surname = models.CharField(max_length = 70) and I'm populating it by looping through a list as follows: from models import Student for id, frm, pref, sname in large_list_of_data: s = Student(student_id = id, form = frm, preferred = pref, surname = sname) s.save() I don't really want to be saving this to the database each time but I don't know another way to get django to not forget about it (I'd rather add all the rows and then do a single commit). There are two problems with the code as it stands. It's slow -- about 20 students get updated each second. It doesn't even make it through large_list_of_data, instead throwing a DatabaseError saying "unable to open database file". (Possibly because I'm using sqlite3.) My question is: How can I stop these two things from happening? I'm guessing that the root of both problems is that I've got the s.save() but I don't see a way of easily batching the students up and then saving them in one commit to the database.

  I'm using google blogger. I want to ad thumbnail images of different classes I will be offering in my home film/video/sound/lighting studio. The idea is the prospective student visits my website, sees a class they want to take, clicks the thumbnail so first read a descriptive article about the class, at which point they can schedule the class for the time, day, and date of their choosing between the hours of 5am to 9pm, 365 days a year. As soon as the student has inputed the time, day and date of the class they want, they would go to a check out page to purchase the class time. The student would then be sent an email confirmation along with the exact location, the class name, and the time and date they selected. I was thinking of using Dwolla for the check out page because Dwolla offers either no fee or 25 cents per payment transaction, but I'm not sure I can hook up to them easily enough. My blog site is not finished by a longshot. I still have to actually input all of the class thumbnail images along with descriptions, but if you need to see what the page looks like the web address is http://www.myalexlogic.com Google blogger allows for third party code to be added within movable gadgets.

• Creating and parsing huge strings with javascript?

  Hi, I have a simple piece of data that I'm storing on a server, as a plain string. It is kind of ridiculous, but it looks like this: name|date|grade|description|name|date|grade|description|repeat for a long time this string can be up to 1.4mb in size. The idea is that it's a bunch of student records, just strung together with a simple pipe delimeter. It's a very poor serialization method. Once this massive string is pushed to the client, it is split along the pipes into student records again, using javascript. I've been timing how long it takes to create, and split, these strings on the client side. The times are actually quite good, the slowest run I've seen on a few different machines is 0.2 seconds for 10,000 'student records', which has a final string size of ~1.4mb. I realize this is quite bizarre, just wondering if there are any inherent problems with creating and splitting such large strings using javascript? I don't know how different browsers implement their javascript engines. I've tried this on the 'major' browsers, but don't know how this would perform on earlier versions of each. Yeah looking for any comments on this, this is more for fun than anything else! Thanks

• Creating multiple instances of a generic database

  Hi all, currently I'm trying to have a setup where a generic database is distributed to students. They would develop an application using this database (Say a shopping cart application), submit their project onto our server, and then it would be graded automatically. These databases are being run in Microsoft SQL Server 2005. We're using user instances to instantiate each database, and multiple requests could be serviced at once. But, the problem is when more than one student submitted a project to be graded, the first database to be instantiated would be the only one and would overwrite all other copies that were currently open. So if stu1 modified his database and stu2 and stu3 had their projects being graded concurrently, at the end of the grading stu1, stu2, and stu3 would have identical DB's at the end. Is there any way I can have multiple independent copies of a generic database, each of which I can load concurrently and modify without having any changes made to any one affecting the others? I did a little reading, and thought it might be possible to do something along the lines of: Student submits project Attach the database with unique db name (specified by student) Do all necessary operations Detach the database I'm unsure if this would fix our problem or be possible, so any help would be much appreciated!

  I have a project that I need to create 2 Arrays, one to hold Student Names and one to hold Student Scores. The user inputs the size of the array, and the array needs to be sorted using BubbleSort (putting the high scores at the top). I have started the project, created the first array for scores, I have successfully done bubble sort and sorted the grades. Now I can't figure out how to make an array for Names, and once I do how do I make the names array correspond to the Grades array BubbleSort? • If You Could Cut Your Meeting Times in ½ Would You?

                  I know it sounds like a big promise. And what I'm thinking about may not cut a :60 minute meeting into :30 minutes, but it could make meetings and interactions up to 2X more productive. How? Social Media for the Enterprise, Not Social Media In the Enterprise Bear with me. I'm not talking about whether or not workers should or shouldn't have access to Facebook on corporate networks. That topic has been discussed @ length. I'm also not talking about the direct benefits of Social Networking tools like Presence (the ability to see someone online and ask a question in real-time), blogs, RSS feeds or external tools like Twitter. The Un-Measurable Benefits Would you do something that you believe will have a positive effect--but can't be measured? It's impossible to quantify the effectiveness of a meeting. However, what I am talking about would be more of a byproduct of all of the social networking tools above. Here's the hypothesis: As I've gotten more and more busy with work, family, travel and kids--and the same has happened to my friends and family--I'm less and less connected. But by introducing Facebook to my life I've not only made connections with longtime friends whom I haven't spoken to in years--but I've increased the pace and quality of interactions, on and offline, with close friends who I see and speak to every week. In some cases it even enhances the connections and interactions with those I see or speak to every day. The same holds true in an organization. Especially a larger one with highly matrixed organizational structures. You work with people on a project, new people come in with each different project and a disproportionate amount of time is spent getting oriented and staying current. Going back to the initial value proposition--making meetings shorter/more effective--a large amount of time is spent: -          At Project Kick-off: Meeting and understanding team member's histories, goals & roles -          Ongoing: Summarizing events since the last meeting or update email In my personal, Facebook life today I know that: -          My best friend from college - has been stranded in India for 5 days because of the volcano in Iceland and is now only 250 miles from home -          One of my co-workers started conference calls at 6:30 this morning -          My wife wasn't terribly pleased with my painting skills in our new bathroom (disclosure: she told me this face to face too) Strengthening Weak Links A recent article in CIO Magazine, Three Dangerous Social Media Misconceptions (Kristen Burnham, March 12, 2010) calls out the #1 misconception as follows: 1. "Face-to-face relationships are far more valuable than virtual ones." While some level of physical interaction will always add value to relationships, Gartner says that come 2020, most relationships and teams will be based on "weak links"--that is, you may not have personally met a contact, but you'll know of or may have interacted with him via social sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. The sooner your enterprise adopts these tools, the sooner your employees will learn them, and the sooner you'll begin to cultivate these relationships-of-the-future.   I personally believe that it's not an either/or choice between face-to-face and virtual interactions. In fact, I'll be as bold as saying it doesn't matter. I can point to two extremely valuable work relationships that I've had over the past 5 years: -          I shared an office with one of them -          I met the other person, face-to-face, only once Both relationships were very productive. The dynamics were similar. The communication tactics differed immensely. What does matter is the quality, frequency and relevance of interactions. Still sound like too much? An over-promise?
