• Uganda .NET Usergroup meeting (February 2010)

  We had a very interesting .NET meeting in which i gave a short presentation on the new features of .NET 4.0 and Visual Studio 2010. The main presentation came from Jake Markhus @jmarkhus who talked about NHibernate (http://nhforge.org).   The membership for the group is growing each time we meet and its very encouraging. Some employers found candidates within our group for hiring, and this has resulted in a mutual benefit between the employers and job-seekers – really cool stuff.   Jake above giving us the soup and nuts of NHibernate. We were very excited since a number companies decided to support us in many ways. Some members won the licenses for Telerik Suite (http://www.telerik.com) while Intellisense LTD (http://www.intellisense.co.ug) agreed to sponsor us on domain registration and hosting of the community site. Jake announced on the possibility of having DevExpress (http://www.devexpress.com) sponsor us on 2 licenses of CodeRush http://www.devexpress.com/coderush which would be won in the next meeting raffle. • Manipulating Human Tasks (for testing) by Mark Nelson

  A few months ago, while working on a BPM migration, I had the need to look at the status of human tasks, and to manipulate them – essentially to just have a single user take random actions on them at some interval, to help drive a set of processes that were being tested. To do this, I wrote a little utility called httool.  It reuses some of the core domain classes from my custom worklist sample (with minimal changes to make it a remote client instead of a local one). I have not got around to documenting it yet, but it is pretty simple and fairly self explanatory.  So I thought I would go ahead and share it with folks, in case anyone is interested in playing with it. You can get the code from my ci-samples repository on java.net: git clone git://java.net/ci4fmw~ci-samples It is in the httool directory. I do plan to get back to this “one day” and enhance it to be more intelligent – target particular task types, update the payload, follow a set of “rules” about what action to take – so that I can use it for more driving more interesting test scenarios.  If anyone is feeling generous with their time, and interested, please feel free to join the java.net project and hack away to your heart’s content. • How do I repeat a texture with GLKit?

  I am using GLKit in order to show textures on my project. • When I try to click and launch some of the links set to open in new window, it is being treated as a pop-up window [migrated]

  For the past few days, we are facing issue with the chrome browser behavior. This is related to opening links set to open in new tab/window. The details are as follow: I have a collection of links and each link points to different resource to be opened in a new tab/window. The code is as follow: <a class="cssClass" rid="1114931" href="http://www.domain.com/resources/abc.html" title="Link1" tabindex="4">Link 1</a> And there are few checks/filters over accessing the resources which have been implemented as onClick handler over the links. In case any of the validations fails, the onClick handler returns false and the default behavior of the link does not happens i.e. links does not get open. One of such (last) checks includes AJAX call in sync mode.   I'm wanting to make my own small webpage, I've got a domain Saoo.eu As you see there is a small play button in the corner witch plays a playlist. Is there anyway to have that playbutton on each page I'd add in the future without resetting every time the page changes? Am I forced to use iFrames for that? • Programming concepts taken from the arts and humanities

  After reading Paul Graham's essay Hackers and Painters and Joel Spolsky's Advice for Computer Science College Students, I think I've finally gotten it through my thick skull that I should not be loath to work hard in academic courses that aren't "programming" or "computer science" courses. To quote the former: I've found that the best sources of ideas are not the other fields that have the word "computer" in their names, but the other fields inhabited by makers. Painting has been a much richer source of ideas than the theory of computation. — Paul Graham, "Hackers and Painters" There are certainly other, much stronger reasons to work hard in the "boring" classes. However, it'd also be neat to know that these classes may someday inspire me in programming. My question is: what are some specific examples where ideas from literature, art, humanities, philosophy, and other fields made their way into programming? In particular, ideas that weren't obviously applied the way they were meant to (like most math and domain-specific knowledge), but instead gave utterance or inspiration to a program's design and choice of names. Good examples: The term endian comes from Gulliver's Travels by Tom Swift (see here), where it refers to the trivial matter of which side people crack open their eggs. The terms journal and transaction refer to nearly identical concepts in both filesystem design and double-entry bookkeeping (financial accounting). mkfs.ext2 even says: Writing superblocks and filesystem accounting information: done Off-topic: Learning to write English well is important, as it enables a programmer to document and evangelize his/her software, as well as appear competent to other programmers online. Trigonometry is used in 2D and 3D games to implement rotation and direction aspects. Knowing finance will come in handy if you want to write an accounting package. Knowing XYZ will come in handy if you want to write an XYZ package. Arguably on-topic: The Monad class in Haskell is based on a concept by the same name from category theory.   Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse (OEPE) 11.1.1.7 is now available and includes first-time support for Oracle ADF development in Eclipse. Installers for OEPE 11.1.1.7 as well as Eclipse Update instructions can be found on the OEPE downloads page. Here is an overview of the new features of OEPE 11.1.1.7: Support for Oracle ADF Faces Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse (OEPE) 11.1.1.7 now provides support for development with Oracle ADF 11.1.1.4. These features focus on enablement and configuration of the ADF Runtime with Eclipse and WebLogic Server 10.3.4 as well as design time tools for ADF Faces. A new OEPE 11.1.1.7 installer bundles WebLogic Server 10.3.4, Coherence 3.6, and Oracle ADF 11.1.1.4. New Server Extensions allow you to download and install the ADF Runtime libraries into an existing WebLogic Server from within Eclipse. • A Reusable Builder Class for Ruby Testing

  My last post was about a class for building test data objects in C#. This post describes the same tool, but implemented in Ruby. The C# version was written first but I originally came up with the solution in my head using Ruby, and then I translated it to C#. • Can´t verify my site on Google (error 403 Forbidden). I have other sites in the same host with no problems whatsoever

  I can´t verify my site on Google. I´ve done this several times for several sites, all inside the same host. I´ve tried the HTML tag method, HTML upload, Domain Name provider (I canp´t find the options that Google tell me that I should activate...), and Google Analytics. I always get this response: Verification failed for http://www.mysite.com/ using the Google Analytics method (1 minute ago). Your verification file returns a status of 403 (Forbidden) instead of 200 (OK). I´ve checked the server headers, and I get this result: REQUESTING: http://www.mysite.com GET / HTTP/1.1 Connection: Keep-Alive Keep-Alive: 300 Accept:/ Host: www.mysite.com Accept-Language: en-us Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0b; Windows NT 6.0) SERVER RESPONSE: HTTP/1.1 403 Forbidden Date: Wed, 19 Sep 2012 03:25:22 GMT Server: Apache/2.2.19 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.19 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 mod_bwlimited/1.4 PHP/5.2.17 Connection: close Content-Type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1 Final Destination Page (It shows my actual homepage). • How to conciliate OOAD and Database Design?

  Recently I've studied about object oriented analysis and design and I liked a lot about it. In every place I've read people say that the idea is to start with the minimum set of requirements and go improving along the way, revisiting this each iteration and making it better as we contiuously develop and contact the customer interested in the software. In particular, one course from Lynda.com said a lot of that: we don't want to spend a lot of time planing everything upfront, we just want to have the minimum to get started and then improve this each iteration. Now, I've also seem a course from the same guy about database design, and there he says differently. He says that although when working with object orientation he likes the agile iterative approach, for database design we should really spend a lot of time planing things upfront instead of just going along the way with the minimum. But this confuses me a little. Indeed, the database will persist important data from our domain model and perhaps configurations of the software and so on. Now, if I'm going to continuously revist the analysis and design of the model, it seems the database design should change also. In the same way, if we plan all the database upfront it seems we are also planing all the model upfront, so the two ideas seems to be incompatible. I really like agile iterative approach, but I'm also looking at getting better design for the database also, so when working with agile iterative approach, how should we deal with the database design?

  Hello, I am trying to submit sitemap.xml (index) to Yahoo Site Explorer but with no luck. I tried using website feed option in the site explorer to submit the sitemap, but I got validation errors. However, when submitting the same sitemap to google webmaster tools, the sitemap was validated successfully. Could it be for the fact that I am using sitemap with image tag: <image:image> <image:loc>http://www.domain.com/pic.jpg</image:loc> <image:title>picture</image:title> </image:image> When I tried validating the sitemap with inline tools such as http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/validate-xml-sitemap.html and http://www.w3.org/2001/03/webdata/xsv the error I received was: Attempt to load a schema document from http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap-image/1.1 (source: new namespace) for http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap-image/1.1, failed: Not recognised as W3C XML Schema or RDDL: html However, the declaration of the sitemap I use in the top of the document is the same as suggested by Google on their official page at http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=178636 : <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9" xmlns:image="http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap-image/1.1"> <url> Any ideas how to resolve this issue? • Ur/Web new purely functional language for web programming?

  I came across the Ur/Web project during my search for web frameworks for Haskell-like languages. It looks like a very interesting project done by one person. Basically, it is a domain-specific purely functional language for web programming, taking the best of ML and Haskell. The syntax is ML, but there are type classes and monad from Haskell, and it's strictly evaluated. Server-side is compiled to native code, client to Javascript. See the slides and FAQ page for other advertised advantages. Looking at the demos and their source code, I think the project is very promising. The latest version is something 20110123, so it seems to be under active development at this time. My question: Has anybody here had any further experience with it? Are there problems/annoyances compared to Haskell, apart from ML's slightly more verbose syntax? Even if it's not well known yet, I hope more people will know of it. OMG this looks very cool to me. I don't want this project to die!!

• Can I migrate from GNU Mailman to MailChimp?

  I have ~20 lists, all of which are mostly announce-only (newsletters--recipients do not reply back to the list) running in GNU Mailman. It's alright. Mailman has certainly prooven itself but we want some progressive features and a better peice of mind (delivery success, hosting, etc... we'd be happy paying a 3rd party to handle these things). can MailChimp give us what we need? I see tons of fun copy and graphics, showing off neat features but what I really want to do is; if MailChimp is doing the mailings, what does the address look like? is MailChimp good for sending out simple newsletters? What about automatic bounce processing / unsubscribing of users? I setup a free account but I don't see how any of it integrates into my own domain... no DNS overrides or cname suggestions. Also, I see MailChimp has a clean and nifty API client in Python that I want to integrate into our sites (Django powered) so that really really makes the service attractive to me--I just hope I understand it correctly.

Try to connect with an FTP user client and upload some files. With my setup, the above listed config works well at this point. Edit /etc/vsftpd.conf and set chroot_local_user= to YES. Make sure that chroot_list_enable= and/or chroot_list_file= are not set. Comment them out if they are. Save and exit. Run sudo restart vsftpd (or sudo service vsftpd restart if you like) in a terminal. Try to connect with an FTP user client. You should see a message more or less like this: GnuTLS error -15: An unexpected TLS packet was received. This is an issue for me, as I do not want FTP-sessions to be able to list files outside the user's home folder. I have checked with several client-side apps, and I get the same results with every one of them. Filezilla is not so good regarding cipher methods nowadays, but as I am able to make an FTP(e)s-connection over TLS (as long as chroot'ing is disabled and ssl_ciphers is set to HIGH) I have a feeling ciphers are not the issue this time, and that I won't find the answer by tweaking configs on the client side. My vsftpd.log stays empty, even though debug_ssl and log_ftp_protocol are enabled, so no info there either.
