  • Classes. Whats the point?

    I'm fairly new to OOP in PHP, I've made a couple of basic scripts but nothing impressive. All I've really taken from it is that it would probably be easier just make a collection of functions and include them. The structure of classes seems to just confuse what was otherwise a simple process. And in collating everything into a class it doesn't really add any functionality. So I'm clearly missing something. Could someone explain what functionality is added by creating classes

  • Building a life-critical System using Agile

    Looking at the general trend of comments in my question about Building an Aircraft using Agile, the biggest problem other than cost appears to be safety. Do people feel that it is not possible to build a safe system (or prove it is safe) using agile? Doesn’t all the iterative testing mitigate this? Is it likely that a piece of software developed using agile will never be as reliable as counterparts such as waterfall?

  • Package names - impl v internal

    In my time of digging around Java APIs I have come across both impl and internal packages. Up until now I never really thought about the difference - as with all enterprisey Java apps, I figured they just meant that "actual implementation in here; you (API user) should be really using the interface. Go away." A little bit of digging around Stack Overflow seems to suggest that the internal package at least can have some security placed around it. So, what is the difference? I don't think it is a matter of taste because I have seen APIs with both.

  • Best (Java) book for understanding 'under the bonnet' for programming?

    What would you say is the best book to buy to understand exactly how programming works under the hood in order to increase performance? I've coded in assembly at university, I studied computer architecture and I obviously did high level programming, but what I really dont understand is things like: -what is happening when I perform a cast -whats the difference in performance if I declare something global as opposed to local? -How does the memory layout for an ArrayList compare with a Vector or LinkedList? -Whats the overhead with pointers? -Are locks more efficient than using synchronized? -Would creating my own array using int[] be faster than using ArrayList -Advantages/disadvantages of declaring a variable volatile I have got a copy of Java Performance Tuning but it doesnt go down very low and it contains rather obvious things like suggesting a hashmap instead of using an ArrayList as you can map the keys to memory addresses etc. I want something a bit more Computer Sciencey, linking the programming language to what happens with the assembler/hardware. The reason im asking is that I have an interview coming up for a job in High Frequency Trading and everything has to be as efficient as possible, yet I cant remember every single possible efficiency saving so i'd just like to learn the fundamentals.   • javasrcipt asyncronous function

    Hi there, i have a problem understanding how this could/should be solved. I have two functions. In the first function ( I call it loadData() ) I'm doing an asyncronous request to the server to load some data. In the second function ( saveData() ) I'm also doing an asyn request to the server to write some data. In the callback of this request I'm callin loadData() to refresh the data. Now the problem: In the saveData() function I want to wait for loadData() to be finished bevore I show a dialog (like alert('Data saved')) I guess this is a common problem, but I couldn't find the solution for it (if there is one..) A solution would be to make the requests syncronous, but the framework I'm using doesn't offer that and I hope there's a better solution.. Thanks to all!

  • jQuery code not executing when DOM is ready

    I have written a simple jQuery script that changes the hash tag of a link. I do this because I am using IntenseDebate comments in Wordpress but the comment link still links replaced id of the old comments. I'm using jQuery so that if javascript is enabled, the user can click on the comments link and it will take them to the IntenseDebate comments. If its not enabled it will take them to the traditional comments (because IntenseDebate requires javascript to function). The issue I'm having lies in this script to change the hash tag at the end of the link. Currently the URL "someurl.com/#respond" but I need the script to change it to "someurl.com/#comments". What is happening is that the script doesn't work, however I believe my syntax is correct so I decided to try copying and pasting the code into Firebug's console and the code executed perfectly. I could see that the link I was trying to change was now correct, and I could click on it and it worked as I desired. So what I don't understand is why the code is not executing when it is supposed to. I am using $(document).ready() and I have other jQuery on the page that executes just fine. I even tested it on a simple HTML page away from all the problems that might be caused by Wordpress and I received the same result. Does anyone know why this might be happening?   • Brief Explanation of C Supersets?

    I'm getting more and more confused in regards to C's supersets the further I venture into the programming world. There's just so many versions.. C, C++, C#, Objective-C, Objective-C++ and God knows what else. I only know tidbits about these languages (some are object-oriented, some are procedural, C was originally developed for UNIX, C++ started as an extension and is used primarily on the Windows OS, Objective-C is primarily used on Linux and Mac OS/iOS, etc), but I'm not even sure that what I know is correct. I would just like someone to shed some light on what I "know" - a little bit more information about which are successive versions, which platforms each are generally used on, which are the best versions to learn, etc if anyone is feeling generous. :) Thanks. :)

  • How do I write to command line in c#?

    Hi I know how to write to console but if I write to console in my program and call my program from the command line it won't display anything. How do I make it so that when I say Console.WriteLine or Console.Out.Writeline ir prints to the command prompt from which it was called and not somewhere else? Once again I know how to do Console.WriteLine so it's not that :-p unless I'm doing it wrong. From what I can tell it's probably something to do with Console.SetOut(TextWriter t)

  • C - fork() and sharing memory

    I need my parent and child process to both be able to read and write the same variable (of type int) so it is "global" between the two processes. I'm assuming this would use some sort of cross-process communication and have one variable on one process being updated. I did a quick google and IPC and various techniques come up but I don't know which is the most suitable for my situation. So what technique is best and could you provide a link to a noobs tutorial for it. Thanks.

  • Refresh Div with Jquery at fixed time

    I've got a php script that tells me when the next bus is due, and at the moment I'm refreshing this into a div, using jquery, every minute or so. Now, because I know the time at which the data will change (after the bus has come), I want it to refresh the div at this time (or just after, doesn't really matter). I should point out that I'm fairly new to js, but this is what I've got so far: var nextbustime = $('#bus').contents(); var nextbustime = new Date(nextbustime); var now = new Date(); var t = nextbustime.getTime() - now.getTime(); var refreshId = setTimeout(function() { $('#bus').fadeOut("slow").load('modules/bus.php?randval='+ Math.random()).fadeIn("slow"); }, t); The div is loaded originally with a php include. Naturally, what I've done doesn't work at all. Do I need some loops going on? Do I need to refresh the time calculator? Please please help! Thanks in advance...

    So I put in in-place editing for one of my models. One of the attributes is PRICE. I used the to_currency method to format the value before it is displayed. The problem I'm having is that with the in-place editor, I just can't figure out how to set a custom display value. I'm trying to get the price to display as $20.00 until it is clicked, but the in place editor displays 20.0..

  • JSF/HTML - Add a Java applet to web page programmatically.

    Theres a web page I'm making which content is very dynamic and so I'm building it from inside the backing bean. I would like to add a Java applet to the web page but I could not find the JSF component type to correspond to the <applet> tag. So My questions are - What is the JSF component type for an applet? How did you find it? (For similar future searches) Thanks! P.S - Just to be clear. An example: <h:PanelGroup> would be HtmlPanelGroup as a java object.

  • Facebook Card Game? Which architecture?

    I am developing a Facebook Card Game for my thesis and i am wondering which architecture fits best? I am going to develop the game using Silverlight + ASP.NET. On the one side the game should contain player vs. player card games. On the other there will be also a lot of contant similar to Mafia Wars(or any other game like that) where you just interact with the server (incl. database) I read a lot about ASP.NET MVC, Silverlight MVVM and that stuff. But what fits best for a game like that? Also i am not sure if i should go with Silverlight 4 already? I don't want to start the wrong way. I really appreciate your help.

  • Centre content vertically in a <div>

    Hi, this is probably very simple to do, but I can't quite get it right. I have a <div> which contains two <a> tags. I would like the <a> tags to be both centred vertically and horizontally. I have set them to centre horizontally by setting the text-align:center; on the div, but can't figure out how to vertically centre them. How would I go about doing this? Thanks.

  • Which bug in the Delphi IDE / VCL do you despise the most?

    I've been working in Delphi 7 for the last 6 years now and have learnt to merely submit to the instablity of the IDE. For example, there are particular projects I've inherited which, when working on, I cannot use the CTRL+SPACE dropdown symbol list in the Delphi editor without getting an Access Violation error, this would easily top my list but there are many more. I'd like to know which bugs frustrate you the most.
