    There are sometimes important files that we don't want to lose and be able to access it on all different PCs and Macs at home. If they are text files for constant editing, then the Source Code Versioning Systems such as CVS, Subversion, Git, Mercurial should be good tools for mirroring the files and keeping the revisions. But what if the file are PDF, mp3, .doc, .xls, .avi -- binary type of files instead of ASCII text files. In this case, what is a good method / software for achieving this purpose?

  • "Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly" when trying to install MySQL on Win7 x64.

    Hi, I've run into a brick wall trying to install MySQL v5.5 on my machine. My PC is Windows 7 x64, Enterprise edition. MySQL installs fine, but when I run the "MySQL Instance Configuration Wizard", it pauses forever on the step "Start Service" (I can let it run for 30 minutes with no response). If I go into services, I see that the "MySQL" service hasn't started, and if I try to start it, it says "Windows could not start MySQL Service on Local Computer. Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly." I've tried the following: Turning off firewall. Uninstalling all antivirus software. Installing / reinstalling 32-bit version of MySQL. Installing / reinstalling 64-bit version of MySQL. Uninstalling, deleting the contents of "C:\program files\MySQL" and "C:\program files (x86)\MySQL", reinstalling. Checking to see that there is no rogue services named MySQL???? (from a previous install). Checking that port 3306 is not used by an alternate program. Changing the default port that MySQL uses. Checking for "my.ini" and "my.ini.cnf" in "C:\windows" (nothing there but that can cause a problem). Running both MySQL installer, and configuration wizard, in "Adminstrator mode". Turning off UAC. Installing with defaults, not changing anything. Rebooting my machine (about 6 reboots so far). Opening up port 3306 in the firewall (both TCP and UDP, inbound and outbound). Swearing at the klutz of a programmer who designed MySQL so you can't even install it (as if that would help!) My machine is working 100% in every other way. InfiniDB (a MySQL compatible database) installs 100%, as does Visual Studio 2010, Microsoft SQL Server, etc, etc. Your advice on how to work around this? p.s. Here is the screen it got stuck on for 15 minutes until I killed the process: Update 2010-12-20 Tried MySQL v5.1, it didn't work either. Its amazing - if you type "mysqld /?", or "mysqld -help", it doesn't give you any help. And, if you try to restart the service manually, it doesn't display any error messages. Could it be any more unhelpful? Update 2010-12-21 Installed MySQL 6.0 alpha, and it worked. However, I'd rather not use an alpha release, given that the "stable" release is anything but :( Update 2010-12-21 Found http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/windows-troubleshooting.html, dealing with troubleshooting under Windows.     I have setup trac with dreamhost one-click install, I read doc it says config is in trac.ini but can't see any under trac dir so where is it ? I have no conf dir ONLY admin, db, htdocs, prefs, etc... Is this the right forum or should I ask on server maybe ?

    I have a directory in my webserver for which I would like to serve up only pdf files. I found I can restrict access using the .htaccess, and using something like <FilesMatch "\.(text,doc)"> Order allow,deny Deny from all Satisfy All </FilesMatch> to serve up everything except a regular expression. Is it possible to instead restrict access to only files which meet some regular expression?

    Hi, My mother has some serious issues using Windows (viruses, spywares, and so on) and I seriously think about setting up Ubuntu as a replacement. (That would ease my "job" as well) The only concern I have is, is there anything to edit .docx (or .xlsx, .pptx, ...) documents on Linux ? Last time I tried OpenOffice (was 3 years ago), it was only able to open "old" MS Office documents (.doc, .xls, ...). Thank you very much for your answers !

When I try to execute ./install on the command prompt, it waits for few seconds and then returns to prompt without any error.     I need to configure a IMAP4 capable (console-based) email client to - check and edit the name of an attachment ("contains umlauts?" - change character ä to ae) - delete emails that don't fit certain requirements (not PDF, DOC,... not from domain xyz.com) Whether the client can do everything by itself or can just trigger a script on incoming mail doesn't matter. Anyone have an idea with mail client would be suitable for such a task?

    There is one big issue for me with Doc in OSX - it does not shows you if more than one window opened in application For example - I were browsing with firefox and some site opens a background window with some sounds - and I have no idea where it comes from - Dock does not tell you if some application opens more than one window.. Is there a way (or some application) that can add some mark to application icon in Dock if it has more than one window open?

  • Hardening Word and Reader against exploits

    I have recently heard a lot about exploits for PDF and DOC files on Windows, which when opened in Reader or Word would infect the computer. I'm assuming most of those exploits rely on some kind of active content, I've heard that Reader allows JavaScript for example. I already have antivirus, but I've heard they often don't catch those types of exploits, so I want to try a little proactive defense. Is there a way to harden Reader and Word by disabling plugins or options that are often used by exploits?
