• Unique element ID, even if element doesn't have one

  I'm writing a GreaseMonkey script where I'm iterating through a bunch of elements. For each element, I need a string ID that I can use to reference that element later. The element itself doesn't have an id attribute, and I can't modify the original document to give it one (although I can make DOM changes in my script). I can't store the references in my script because when I need them, the GreaseMonkey script itself will have gone out of scope. Is there some way to get at an "internal" ID that the browser uses, for example? A Firefox-only solution is fine; a cross-browser solution that could be applied in other scenarios would be awesome. Edit: If the GreaseMonkey script is out of scope, how are you referencing the elements later? They GreaseMonkey script is adding events to DOM objects. I can't store the references in an array or some other similar mechanism because when the event fires, the array will be gone because the GreaseMonkey script will have gone out of scope. So the event needs some way to know about the element reference that the script had when the event was attached. And the element in question is not the one to which it is attached. Can't you just use a custom property on the element? Yes, but the problem is on the lookup. I'd have to resort to iterating through all the elements looking for the one that has that custom property set to the desired id. That would work, sure, but in large documents it could be very time consuming. I'm looking for something where the browser can do the lookup grunt work. Wait, can you or can you not modify the document? I can't modify the source document, but I can make DOM changes in the script. I'll clarify in the question. Can you not use closures? Closuses did turn out to work, although I initially thought they wouldn't. See my later post. It sounds like the answer to the question: "Is there some internal browser ID I could use?" is "No."

  I am using Mozy Pro to backup our Hyperv servers. I am doing this without any issues on a 2nd server but this box hasn't backed up sucessfully yet.   I have a listener class that accepts GUI change events in one method. The incoming event objects have a superclass of a type of GUI Event, the behaviour should depend on the dynamic type of the incoming variable. I wanted to do do lots of methods like: handleGUIEvent(EventChangedX event) handleGUIEvent(EventChangedY event) I am using a single event listener and receiving objects of various types but the behaviour should be different for each. What would you do? I do not want to use a switch statement as this would get unmaintainable.

• Any way to add an observer to the head of the queue using Element#observe?

  This might not be possible but before I rewrite part of my application I wanted to ask... I have a JavaScript app which creates a submit <input> and observes that input's click event using Prototype's Element#observe function. For a few particular pages on one particular site which uses this app, I need to apply some additional business logic before the code which executes normally when the button is clicked. Is there any way I can use Elemen#observe to add my new event handler before the existing event handler, so I can stop the event if these new conditions aren't met? If not I'll probably solve this the "proper" way by having the application fire a specific beforeTakingAction event and add a listener for that which prevents the application from taking it's action, but that's more complicated than this simple problem requires, and requires rewriting part of a shared application for just one user...

• How can I use multithreading in a Windows Forms application to update a progress bar?

  There are two objects. The Windows Form with a button and a progress bar, and another object that handles an algorithm. In the algorithm object there is an event, and a property. The event is ProgressChanged, and the property is Progress (which is an int). In the calling window, the button starts off a set of steps in the algorithm object. As each step (or substeps) occurs, the ProgressChanged event fires, and in the window there is an event handler that essentially increments the progress bar relative to the Progress property. The problem I am running into is that because the algorithm has a possibility (and high liklihood) of running a relatively long time, I need to move it into it's own background thread and push the event back up to the window. My issue is that I'm not completely sure what I'm doing when it comes to multi-threading. I've looked at Control.Invoke and I'm a little lost. Can someone point me in the right direction?

• Manually start session with specific id / transitioning session cookie between domains

  My host requires me to use a different domain for SSL secured access (shared SSL), so I need to transition the user session between two domains. One part of the page lives at http://example.com, while the SSL'd part is at https://example.hosting.com. As such I can't set a domain-spanning cookie. What I'm trying to do is to transition the session id over and re-set the cookie like this: http://example.com/normal/page, user clicks link to secure area and goes to: http://example.com/secure/page, which causes a redirect to: https://example.hosting.com/secure/page?sess=ikub..., which resurrects the session and sets a new cookie valid for the domain, then redirects to: https://example.hosting.com/secure/page This works up to the point where the session should be resurrected. I'm doing: function beforeFilter() { ... $this->Session->id($_GET['sess']); $this->Session->activate(); ... } As far as I can tell this should start the session with the given ID. It actually generates a new session ID though and this session is empty, the data is not restored. This is on CakePHP 1.2.4. Do I need to do something else, or is there a better way to do what I'm trying to do?

  I am trying to use the MVVM pattern, and I am wondering where I place an ID value. Do I create a TextBlock that has its visibility property set to collapsed? Or is there a better place to store this kind of data? • Retrieving and displaying a contact name from a contact id while using a SimpleCursorAdapter

  I am storing information on the phone's contacts using a sqlite database. The fields I am storing are: _id, contact_id, body where _id is the row's id, contact_id is the phone contact's id and body is just a simple text which is the actual information I am storing. I'm using a SimpleCursorAdapter to map the data to the view, like so: Cursor cursor = database.fetchInformation(); // fetch info from DB String[] from = new String[] { CONTACT_ID, BODY }; int[] to = new int[] { R.id.contact, R.id.body }; SimpleCursorAdapter adapter = new SimpleCursorAdapter(this, R.layout.row, cursor, from, to); getListView().setAdapter(adapter); What I would actually want is to get the contact name that is associated with this CONTACT_ID, and have that be shown in the view. I can't seem to find a simple solution. I've tried implementing my own SimpleCursorAdapter and rewriting setViewText(TextView, String) but it didn't work. Also, it just seems overly complicated for such a simple task. Any help? Thanks.

I want the drop down to always reset after the view is returned after a button submits the page through the controller action. So how I've structured it all works but is it possible to reset the dropdown list each time? I can't find a way to do it and I've tried a lot of ways, believe me. My View: @Model.PspSourceModel.PayAccount.PaymentProviderId <br /> @Html.DropDownListFor( x => x.PspSourceModel.PayAccount.PaymentProviderId, new SelectList(Model.PspSourceModel.PaymentProviders, "Value", "Text", "-- please select --"), "-- please select --" My Controller: // I've tried forcing the selected value id here - doesn't effect the dropdownlist still? pspVM.PspSourceModel.PayAccount.PaymentProviderId = 1; return (View(pspVM)); My Webpage shows: 1 (the id I set in the Action) dropdownlist with the id=6 or whatever value was chosen prior to submitting the form. From the questions and answers on SO and the wider web I thought the dropdownlist seems tied to the id you choose but how do I override that to reset the dropdown to 'please select' each time? • auto_complete plugin error: Couldn't find Question with ID=auto_complete_for_tag_tag_name

  I have successfully set up this plugin before so I am curious as to what I am doing wrong here. I have built the ability for users to add tags to questions. I am not using tagging plugin here but that shouldn't matter for this. With respect to the auto complete, I am trying to have the form located in the /views/questions/show.html.erb file access the Tags table and display entries in the tags.tags_name column. When I begin to type in the field I get the following error message: Processing QuestionsController#show (for 127.0.0.1 at 2010-05-31 15:22:20) [GET] Parameters: {"tag"=>{"tag_name"=>"a"}, "id"=>"auto_complete_for_tag_tag_name"} Question Load (0.1ms) SELECT * FROM "questions" WHERE ("questions"."id" = 0) ActiveRecord::RecordNotFound (Couldn't find Question with ID=auto_complete_for_tag_tag_name): app/controllers/application_controller.rb:15:in `init_data' For some reason I am actually passing the field name as the Question.id. The plugin set up is fairly simple as you add the following line to your controller: auto_complete_for :tag, :tag_name and the following line in your routes.rb file: map.resources :tags, :collection => {:auto_complete_for_tag_tag_name => :get } I have added the controller line to both my tags and questions controller and also mapped resources for both tags and questions in my routes.rb file: map.resources :tags, :collection => {:auto_complete_for_tag_tag_name => :get } map.resources :questions, :collection => {:auto_complete_for_tag_tag_name => :get } I have played around with removing either or of the above but can't seem to fix it.   Hi, I have a small problem in my code and I need your help. Well Im using fetch_assoc to get data from database and I need to get the ID number of each of returned values. the issue is that my code only return the ID number of the last data.   Still getting to grips with jQuery and I am pleased to have got as far as I have, especially help from the posts in this forum. However, now got to a working function that does what I want, that is to create a radio group that looks like a button. It pulls data via json and loops through creating the radio buttons. What I need to do is identify which form so the data can be processed.   I have two tables one is members table with columns member id , member first name, member last name. I have another table guest passes with columns guest pass id and member id and issue date . I have a list view that will displays guest passes details (I.e) like member name and issue date and I have two text boxes those are for entering member name and issue date . member name text box is auto complete text box that working fine.... but the problem is when I am entering the name that is not in member table at this time it will accept and displays a blank field in list view in member name column and member id is stored as "0" in guest pass table ......
