• What is the proper way to declare a specialization of a template for another template type?

  The usual definition for a specialization of a template function is something like this: class Foo { [...] }; namespace std { template<> void swap(Foo& left, Foo& right) { [...] } } // namespace std But how do you properly define the specialization when the type it's specialized on is itself a template? Here's what I've got: template <size_t Bits> class fixed { [...] }; namespace std { template<size_t Bits> void swap(fixed<Bits>& left, fixed<Bits>& right) { [...] } } // namespace std Is this the right way to declare swap? It's supposed to be a specialization of the template function std::swap, but I can't tell whether the compiler is seeing it as such, or whether it thinks that it's an overload of it or something.

• Better Way To Use C++ Named Parameter Idiom?

  I've been developing a GUI library for Windows (as a personal side project, no aspirations of usefulness). For my main window class, I've set up a hierarchy of option classes (using the Named Parameter Idiom), because some options are shared and others are specific to particular types of windows (like dialogs). The way the Named Parameter Idiom works, the functions of the parameter class have to return the object they're called on. The problem is that, in the hierarchy, each one has to be a different class -- the createWindowOpts class for standard windows, the createDialogOpts class for dialogs, and the like. I've dealt with that by making all the option classes templates. My question is, is there an easier way to implement the Named Parameter Idiom in this case, one that doesn't require all the extra stuff?

• Unnamed/anonymous namespaces vs. static functions

  A little-used feature of C++ is the ability to create anonymous namespaces, like so: namespace { int cannotAccessOutsideThisFile() { ... } } // namespace You would think that such a feature would be useless -- since you can't specify the name of the namespace, it's impossible to access anything within it from outside. But these unnamed namespaces are accessible within the file they're created in, as if you had an implicit using-clause to them. My question is, why or when would this be preferable to using static functions? Or are they essentially two ways of doing the exact same thing?

• Errors with large data sources

  I'm doing some benchmarking on large data sources and binding/exporting data for reporting. I started with using a data set, filling it with 100000 rows and then attempting to open a crystal report with the retrieved data. I noticed that the data set filled just fine (took about 779 milliseconds) however, when attempting to export the data to the report or even bind to a gridview the application would fail with an OutOfMemoryException. Does anyone experienced this before or have an idea of how to get around it? It is very possible that clients will run reports for years worth of data and 100000 rows are not inconceivable. The application and the benchmark code are written in C# using ORACLE and SQL Server databases. I still have some data sources to test, but would like to know how to get around this just in case I don't find a better solution.

  Does anyone know how to obtain the browser culture from firefox and google chrome using javascript? Note: This is an asp.net 3.5 web application. The requirement is to try and set the applications display culture based on the browser culture. I have found very few bits and pieces of information for the other browsers but they do not seem to work. • Code thinks Datagrid footer textbox is empty...

  Hello All, I am working on an .net (C#) web application. Recently a defect came my way that stated that when two users were logged into the application at the same time they both could not update values without one refreshing the page. When I looked into the issue I discovered that the author of the code has used static datasets. I changed the datasets to not be static and everything works great. However, This issue spans many pages in the application and I must fix it everywhere. On some of these pages the application uses datasets to bind data to datagrids. The datagrids are populated with the information in the dataset and the footer contains some textboxes and an add button to add extra rows. Here is where the problem starts: When the page was using static datasets and the user attempted to add a row through the interface everything worked fine. However, when I changed it to use datasets that were not static (they are loaded every time the page loads) and the user attempts to add a row, the code thinks that the textbox is empty (discovered when debugging even though I can see the text that I entered) and empty field validation fails and a message is displayed. Can someone please tell me why on Earth this is happening? Why does it see the text when the dataset is static (the dataset NEVER populates the foot row) and not see the text when it is not static? Some insight would be awesome! Thanks in advance!

• How can I strip non-XHTML tags from a string in C#?

  I need to be able to remove non-XHTML tags from a string containing XHTML that has been stored in a database. The string also contains references for controls (e.g. ) inside the XHTML, but I need clean XHTML with all standard tag contents unchanged. These control tags are varied (they could be any ASP.NET control), so there are too many to go looking for each one and remove them. The way they are closed is also varied, so not all of them have closing tags, some are self closing. How can I go about doing this? I've found some HTML cleaners on-line for including in my project, but they either remove everything or just HTML encode the entire string. Also, I'm dealing with parts of XHTML documents, not entire documents - don't know if that makes a difference. Any help would be appreciated.

• w00t! First post!

  So, I busted my old blog and hadn't been keeping up with it. Decided it would be easier on me to use software that I didn't maintain, so several months ago I signed up for a GWB account. You are a witness to procrastination at its finest!  I was remarking to my friend Abby that I hadn't written anything in ages, that I've typed a bunch in the last 5 years or so, but that the typing belonged to someone else as work product, was boring technical mumbo jumbo, or was only good before it spoiled, that project/job/technology/tweet based freshness window that us geeks have to deal with. In short, I just didn't feel like it. So forgive the rambling sentences and my grammatical failures, you have Abby to thank ;) On the technology front I've been working with WPF, WCF and a whole lot of other alphabet soup in terms of patterns. I'm starting to get spoiled on Visual Studio 2010, and may have made a mistake by evaluating the ultimate version. Because I'm a .NET geek and an outdoor geek, expect a hodgepodge. It's nearly Easter, which for the garden means a whole lot of things. I've already started getting seed out, and started working soil. It feels good to get real dirt on your hands.

• XNA for life!

  Or until my arm falls off at least…. I’ve been meaning to get a new tattoo for quite a while. And I wanted it to be geeky and to represent some memorable milestone in my life. So I was thinking, mulling over some various ideas, sketching some things out. And then it hit me. XNA. Specifically the XNA logo. It’s super geeky (so geeky I’ll probably have to explain to 90% of the people that say it what it even means) and I’m not sure that anything has been so memorable and made such a change in my life as XNA. Cheesy but true. When the XNA framework came out, thing started happening quickly. I stumbled into a geek community and started going to code camps, MSDN events, code-a-thons. I got an XNA MVP award. Met huge geek idols in my life (like Rory Blyth and Scott Hanselman) and just really started getting integrated into this fantastic development community. Then to add to all of that I became part of this fantastic XNA community. It’s really just been one of the best things to ever happen to me and I’m having the time of my life right now. So sure, it’s permanent. Sure Microsoft could cancel XNA, rebrand it to Flimmer Flammer or some other name. Sure my arms are going to be wrinkly and flabby when I’m older and for sure I’m going to have to explain to people over and over again just what in the world “xna” means. • Download and Try Out the New ‘Australis UI’ Test-Build of Firefox for Windows

  We have all been hearing about the upcoming changes to the UI in Firefox and now the first test build is finally available to try out. Mozilla software engineer Jared Wein has worked hard and put together an unofficial (at the moment) Australis UI build that you can download as a regular installer or as a portable in zip file format. Here is a closer look at the new tab setup in the Australis build. Notice that only the focused tab is non-transparent while the non-active tabs blend nicely into the background. Special Note: Our screenshots were taken in Windows 8, thus the slightly different looking (non-rounded) corners on the app window. • How to Customize the File Open/Save Dialog Box in Windows

  Generally, there are two kinds of Open/Save dialog boxes in Windows. One kind looks like Windows Explorer, with the tree on the left containing Favorites, Libraries, Computer, etc. The other kind contains a vertical toolbar, called the Places Bar. The Windows Explorer-style Open/Save dialog box can be customized by adding your own folders to the Favorites list. You can, then, click the arrows to the left of the main items, except the Favorites, to collapse them, leaving only the list of default and custom Favorites. The Places Bar is located along the left side of the File Open/Save dialog box and contains buttons providing access to frequently-used folders. The default buttons on the Places Bar are links to Recent Places, Desktop, Libraries, Computer, and Network. However, you change these links to be links to custom folders of your choice. We will show you how to customize the Places Bar using the registry and using a free tool in case you are not comfortable making changes in the registry. • The Best Tools for Enhancing and Expanding the Features of the Windows Clipboard

  The Windows clipboard is like a scratch pad used by the operating system and all running applications. When you copy or cut some text or a graphic, it is temporarily stored in the clipboard and then retrieved later when you paste the data. We’ve previously showed you how to store multiple items to the clipboard (using Clipboard Manager) in Windows, how to copy a file path to the clipboard, how to create a shortcut to clear the clipboard, and how to copy a list of files to the clipboard. There are some limitations of the Windows clipboard. Only one item can be stored at a time. Each time you copy something, the current item in the clipboard is replaced. The data on the clipboard also cannot be viewed without pasting it into an application. In addition, the data on the clipboard is cleared when you log out of your Windows session. NOTE: The above image shows the clipboard viewer from Windows XP (clipbrd.exe), which is not available in Windows 7 or Vista. However, you can download the file from deviantART and run it to view the current entry in the clipboard in Windows 7.
