• Can't find Localhost files

  Hope you can help. This is my first time trying Ubuntu/Linux. I am logged in as root I have downloaded and installed LAMP and PHPMYADMIN. I get the test page under localhost say that It works and is installed Correctly. I have also put my files in the /var/www. they are PHP files When I put the address localhost/(page name.php) I get an error saying Not Found The requested URL /index.php was not found on this server. Apache/2.2.22 (Ubuntu) Server at localhost Port 80 I Have put the files in the wrong folder?? If I look in the "/etc/ap[ache2/sites-available/default", It tells my my DocumentRoot is /var/www Would love somehelp on this please Many thanks GF

• OWSM Policy Repository in JDeveloper - Tips & Tricks - 11g

  In this blog post I discussed about the OWSM Policy Repository that is embedded in JDeveloper. However some times people may run into issues with the embedded repository. Here is screen snapshot that shows the error you may run into (click on the image for larger image): If you run into "java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: WSM-04694 : An invalid directory was provided to connect to a file-base MDS repository." this caused due to spaces in the folder name. Here is a quick way to workaround this issue by running "Jdeveloper.exe - su". Hope people find this useful!

• Idea to develop a caching server between IIS and SQL Server

  I work on a few high traffic websites that all share the same database and that are all heavily database driven. Our SQL server is max-ed out and, although we have already implemented many changes that have helped but the server is still working too hard. We employ some caching in our website but the type of queries we use negate using SQL dependency caching. We tried SQL replication to try and kind of load balance but that didn't prove very successful because the replication process is quite demanding on the servers too and it needed to be done frequently as it is important that data is up to date. We do use a Varnish web caching server (Linux based) to take a bit of the load off both the web and database server but as a lot of the sites are customised based on the user we can only do so much. Anyway, the reason for this question... Varnish gave me an idea for a possible application that might help in this situation. Just like Varnish sits between a web browser and the web server and caches response from the web server, I was wondering about the possibility of creating something that sits between the web server and the database server. Imagine that all SQL queries go through this SQL caching server. If it's a first time query then it will get recorded, and the result requested from the SQL server and stored locally on the cache server. If it's a repeat request within a set time then the result gets retrieved from the local copy without the query being sent to the SQL server. The caching server could also take advantage of SQL dependency caching notifications. This seems like a good idea in theory. There's still the same amount of data moving back and forward from the web server, but the SQL server is relieved of the work of processing the repeat queries. I wonder about how difficult it would be to build a service that sort of emulates requests and responses from SQL server, whether SQL server's own caching is doing enough of this already that this wouldn't be a benefit, or even if someone has done this before and I haven't found it? I would welcome any feedback or any references to any relevant projects.

• Oracle Forms 11g Customer Upgrade Reference

  We have just published a reference to an Oracle customer, Callista, talking about their Forms upgrade experiences and future development plans. I'm actually seeing a huge number of Forms customers upgrading to 11g but it can take some time and effort for customers to formally agree to be a reference story, so I'm grateful to Callista for taking the time to become an 11g upgrade reference.  We have a number of other customers who are writing up their upgrade experiences and we hope to have these on OTN in the coming months. • Do NOT remove the reference to System.Core from your VS2010 Project

  One of the things I routinely do when adding a new class library project, is remove all references and just add them back in as I need them. That is NOT a good idea for Visual Studio 2010. When I DID need System.Core, and went to add it back, this is what I got: "A reference to 'System.Core' could not be added. This component is automatically referenced..." After some Googling I found this article: http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/525663/cannot-remove-system-core-dll-reference-from-a-vs2010-project It tells you to add it back manually. Here is the part that needs back in the project file. After the last PropertyGroup node, add this node:   <ItemGroup>     <Reference Include="System.Core" />   </ItemGroup> You should be good to go again. Hope this helps.

• Micro QR Code Generator with minimal error correction

  I am searching a Micro QR Code Generator that fulfills the following requirements: At least 20 characters encoded Minimal error correction (required to get the 20 characters stuffed in) I already searched google, but it seems all micro qr generators automatically use maximum error correction, which is very unhandy for my task, as we need the 20 characters completety. I can't use standard QR because there are certain requirements that need the code to be smaller than a certain dimension when printed... I hope someone can help me. PS: I'm not sure that this is the right board to post this question on, so feel free to redirect me to a better board if you have an idea. PPS: If nothing can be found and I'm forced to write one on my own: Where can I find detailed information on how to write a QR code generator?

• Can you Trust Search?

  An awful lot of referrals to e-commerce sites come from web searches. Retailers rely on search engine optimization (SEO) to correctly position their website so they can be found. Search on "blue jeans" and the results are determined by a semi-secret algorithm -- in my case Levi.com, Banana Republic, and ShopStyle show up. The NY Times recently uncovered a situation where JCPenney, via third-parties hired to help with SEO, was caught manipulating search results so they were erroneously higher in page rankings. No doubt this helped drive additional sales during this part Christmas. The article, The Dirty Little Secrets of Search, is well worth reading. My friend Ron Kleinman started an interesting discussion at the ARTS Linkedin forum. He posed the question: The ability of a single company to "punish" any retailer (by significantly impacting their on-line sales volume) who does not play by their rules ... is this a good thing or a bad thing? Clearly JCP was in the wrong and needed to be punished, but should that decision lie with Google alone? Don't get me wrong -- I'm certainly not advocating we create a Department of Search where bureaucrats think of ways to spend money, but Google wields an awful lot of power in this situation, and it makes me feel uncomfortable. Now Google is incorporating more social aspects into their search results. For example, when Google knows its me (i.e. I'm logged in when using Google) search results will be influenced by my Twitter network. In an effort to increase relevance, the blogs and re-tweeted articles from my network will be higher in the search results than they otherwise would be. So in the case of product searches, things discussed in my network will rise to the top. Continuing my blue jean example, if someone in my network had been discussing Macy's perhaps they would now be higher in the result set. soapbox: I already have lots of spammers posting bogus comments to this blog in an effort to create additional links to their sites and thus increase their search ranking. Should I expect a similar situation in Twitter and eventually Facebook? Now retailers need to expand their SEO efforts to incorporate social media as well, but do us all a favor and please don't cheat.

• Professional iOS Development as a Backup Career [closed]

  I am a research chemist by day and I am a self-taught hobbyist iOS programmer by night. I am in the process of developing a moderately complex iOS app and hope to launch it within a month or two. I love everything about iOS development (and programming in general). I want to know if iOS development could become a backup career for me if I loose my job. My question: Let's say I had a couple of apps in the app store, a solid foundation in objective-C and the apple frameworks and basic knowledge on network integrated apps. Without a formal CS degree, what other experience/knowledge would I need to land a job as a professional iOS developer? Forgive me if this question is out of bounds for this forum. If it is, suggestions on where to post such a question would be appreciated.

I paged back through some of my early posts, curious what sort of things about which I used to post. It's also interesting to see how my focus has changed and what really hasn't. I was also reminded that Chris Williams and I have been friends for that long. I don't blog nearly as often now as I used to do, but I still really like the GWB community, and I am honoured to be allowed to continue to be a part of it. • How do I get TV out working on an ATI X800 GTO²?

  Is there any way to make my graphics card (ATI x800) work with tvout? I know there are no proprietary drivers for this card only the opensource ones. • Goodbye XML&hellip; Hello YAML (part 2)

  Part 1 After I explained my motivation for using YAML instead of XML for my data, I got a lot of people asking me what type of tooling is available in the .Net space for consuming YAML.  In this post, I will discuss a nice tooling option as well as describe some small modifications to leverage the extremely powerful dynamic capabilities of C# 4.0.  I will be referring to the following YAML file throughout this post Recipe: Title: Macaroni and Cheese Description: My favorite comfort food. Author: Brian Genisio TimeToPrepare: 30 Minutes Ingredients: - Name: Cheese Quantity: 3 Units: cups - Name: Macaroni Quantity: 16 Units: oz Steps: - Number: 1 Description: Cook the macaroni - Number: 2 Description: Melt the cheese - Number: 3 Description: Mix the cooked macaroni with the melted cheese Tooling It turns out that there are several implementations of YAML tools out there.  The neatest one, in my opinion, is YAML for .NET, Visual Studio and Powershell.  It includes a great editor plug-in for Visual Studio as well as YamlCore, which is a parsing engine for .Net.  It is in active development still, but it is certainly enough to get you going with YAML in .Net.  Start by referenceing YamlCore.dll, load your document, and you are on your way.  Here is an example of using the parser to get the title of the Recipe: var yaml = YamlLanguage.FileTo("Data.yaml") as Hashtable; var recipe = yaml["Recipe"] as Hashtable; var title = recipe["Title"] as string; In a similar way, you can access data in the Ingredients set: var yaml = YamlLanguage.FileTo("Data.yaml") as Hashtable; var recipe = yaml["Recipe"] as Hashtable; var ingredients = recipe["Ingredients"] as ArrayList; foreach (Hashtable ingredient in ingredients) { var name = ingredient["Name"] as string; } You may have noticed that YamlCore uses non-generic Hashtables and ArrayLists.  This is because YamlCore was designed to work in all .Net versions, including 1.0.  Everything in the parsed tree is one of two things: Hashtable, ArrayList or Value type (usually String).  This translates well to the YAML structure where everything is either a Map, a Set or a Value.  Taking it further Personally, I really dislike writing code like this.  Years ago, I promised myself to never write the words Hashtable or ArrayList in my .Net code again.  They are ugly, mostly depreciated collections that existed before we got generics in C# 2.0.  Now, especially that we have dynamic capabilities in C# 4.0, we can do a lot better than this.  With a relatively small amount of code, you can wrap the Hashtables and Array lists with a dynamic wrapper (wrapper code at the bottom of this post).  The same code can be re-written to look like this: dynamic doc = YamlDoc.Load("Data.yaml"); var title = doc.Recipe.Title; And dynamic doc = YamlDoc.Load("Data.yaml"); foreach (dynamic ingredient in doc.Recipe.Ingredients) { var name = ingredient.Name; } I significantly prefer this code over the previous.  That’s not all… the magic really happens when we take this concept into WPF.  With a single line of code, you can bind to the data dynamically in the view: DataContext = YamlDoc.Load("Data.yaml"); Then, your XAML is extremely straight-forward (Nothing else.  No static types, no adapter code.  Nothing): <StackPanel> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Recipe.Title}" /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Recipe.Description}" /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Recipe.Author}" /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Recipe.TimeToPrepare}" /> <TextBlock Text="Ingredients:" FontWeight="Bold" /> <ItemsControl ItemsSource="{Binding Recipe.Ingredients}" Margin="10,0,0,0"> <ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Quantity}" /> <TextBlock Text=" " /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Units}" /> <TextBlock Text=" of " /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Name}" /> </StackPanel> </DataTemplate> </ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> </ItemsControl> <TextBlock Text="Steps:" FontWeight="Bold" /> <ItemsControl ItemsSource="{Binding Recipe.Steps}" Margin="10,0,0,0"> <ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Number}" /> <TextBlock Text=": " /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Description}" /> </StackPanel> </DataTemplate> </ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> </ItemsControl> </StackPanel> This nifty XAML binding trick only works in WPF, unfortunately.  Silverlight handles binding differently, so they don’t support binding to dynamic objects as of late (March 2010).  This, in my opinion, is a major lacking feature in Silverlight and I really hope we will see this feature available to us in Silverlight 4 Release.  (I am not very optimistic for Silverlight 4, but I can hope for the feature in Silverlight 5, can’t I?) Conclusion I still have a few things I want to say about using YAML in the .Net space including de-serialization and using IronRuby for your YAML parser, but this post is hopefully enough to see how easy it is to incorporate YAML documents in your code. • Any idea for a master thesis in software engineering

  Hi! I have to choose a thesis for my master degree. Time is limited to about 6 months. Do you have any idea? Any personal thesis that was successful? After searching around for some time now, i see the most famous topics are related to artificial intelligence, but i don't want something like that, because most of it would be just theory and boring. A lot of students present these kind of studies because those are the most difficult. I would prefer something that does not necessary include that mathematical complexity but which is an everyday-life topic, and gives concrete ideas, hypothesis, or solutions to some actual problems. Hope i gave my whole idea: i am looking for something that is different from the majority of what all students do, and able to impress the audience... :) I would really really appreciate any your suggestion, Thank you!

• Grub2 -- Dualboot Ubuntu LTS 12.04 and Windows 7 -- Detects two Windows 7 (loader) entries

  this is the first question I have ever asked the Ubuntu Community. :D I'm fairly new to Ubuntu, but I understand the basics and know how to navigate the Terminal. I also know how to ask for/research my problems before asking for/ help. I have scoured the internet high and low and learned much of how Grub2 works. But nothing has helped me to solve my problem. My problem is this: I have a computer that has three hard drives. It previously had Windows XP, but I upgraded to Windows 7. I also installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin). During my installation of Windows 7, there was a failure and I had to restart the installation. Afterwards, I installed Ubuntu. After some trouble removing all traces of the XP OS (Ubuntu auto-detected it, but not Windows 7) I got the two OSes working flawlessly. Or, almost. When booting up, Grub2 used to display Ubuntu, Ubuntu Recovery Mode, Other Versions of Linux, memtest, followed by "Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1" and "Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sdb1". I eventually removed Recovery Mode, Other Versions, and Memtest. Now, when I run: sudo update-grub I get this print-out: Generating grub.cfg ... Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-26-generic Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-26-generic Found Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1 Found Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sdb1 I would like to remove "Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1", as it is a broken entry that shouldn't exist, and must have been installed during my first Windows 7 attempt. I cannot find a Windows 7 entry in /etc/grub.d... And I don't know where to look. Here is a layout of my hard drives: /dev/sda1/ (1.82 TiB), NTFS ("Media") /dev/sdb1/ (100 Mib), NTFS ("System Reserved") /dev/sdb2/ (149 GiB), NTFS ("Windows 7") /dev/sdb3/ (149 GiB), Extended (" ") /dev/sdb4/ (145 GiB), ext4 (" ") /dev/sdb5/ (4 GiB), linux-swap (" ") /dev/sdc1/ (488.28 GiB), NTFS ("Downloads") /dev/sdc2/ (488.28 GiB), NTFS ("AltMedia") /dev/sdc3/ (886.45 GiB), NTFS ("Personal") unallocated (2.09 MiB), unallocated What I think has happened: Windows 7 installed first and badly. I installed it again. First, there was Windows XP to guide where the bootloader went to so it was put on /dev/sdb1/. But, the second time no such guide existed so the machine put another bootloader on /dev/sda1/. sda1, by the way, is the only partition on a 2TB drive. No boot record partition appears to exist according to gedit. I'm not sure where Grub2 is getting this information from. But, there it is. Is there anything somebody can do to help me? Or, is there any more information I should add? Thank you, community!

• How to set wifi driver settings to prefer 5 GHz channel above 2.4 GHz

  Currently I'm in a new building of my university. In this building my wifi often breaks down and then restores connection again. This is really irritating since it happens a lot. Now as a coincidence there were some tech guys running around here and where asking everyone if the wifi was doing fine. I told them that my wifi tears down all the time and then reconnects. They figured out that my wifi is switching all the time between the 2.4 GHz channel and 5 GHz channel. They asked me if I could acces the driver settings of my wireless card. Unfortunately I don't know how to do this is in either Linux or Windows. And unfortunately again they only knew the windows solution xD. So I hope somebody can tell me how I tell my wifi that it should stay on the 5 GHz network and not disconnect and switch to the 2.4 GHz channel?

  I am extremely new to Ubuntu and need to work on EdX platform. I need to install the NFS Client on Ubuntu 12.04 for the same. I am clueless as to where can I find this missing file as stated in the output. I tried to google about this problem but none of the solutions I came across have helped or I have not been able to understand some of them. Any help would really be appreciated. • What would be a best way to code a rudimentary LIMS?

  Hi, I hope that I am asking the right question at right place. If not, please do not hesitate to point me to the right place. I am working in a laboratory, where computers/programming/programmers are all used only as support. But I believe that we need better information organization and management. Given the diverse information generated in the lab I believe that we need some sort of Laboratory Information Management System. Is there a good starting point to do this? I am myself not a trained programmer. I can code reasonably well in python and R, and if necessary I can learn MySql, php.

• Victor Grazi, Java Champion!

  Congratulations to Victor Grazi, who has been made a Java Champion! He was nominated by his peers and selected as a Java Champion for his experience as a developer, and his work in the Java and Open Source communities. Grazi is a Java evangelist and serves on the Executive Committee of the Java Community Process, representing Credit Suisse - the first non-technology vendor on the JCP. He also arranges the NY Java SIG meetings at Credit Suisse's New York campus each month, and he says it has been a valuable networking opportunity. He also is the spec lead for JSR 354, the Java Money and Currency API. Grazi has been building real time financial systems in Java since JDK version 1.02! In 1996, the internet was just starting to happen, Grazi started a dot com called Supermarkets to Go, that provided an on-line shopping presence to supermarkets and grocers. Grazi wrote most of the code, which was a great opportunity for him to learn Java and UI development, as well as database management. Next, he went to work at Bank of NY building a trading system. He studied for Java certification, and he noted that getting his certification was a game changer because it helped him started to learn the nuances of the Java language. He has held other development positions, "You may have noticed that you don't get as much junk mail from Citibank as you used to - that is thanks to one of my projects!" he told us. Grazi joined Credit Suisse in 2005 and is currently Vice President on the central architecture team. Grazi is proud of his open source project, Java Concurrent Animated, a series of animations that visualize the functionality of the components in the java.util.concurrent library. "It has afforded me the opportunity to speak around the globe" and because of it, has discovered that he really enjoys doing public presentations. He is a fine addition to the Java Champions program. The Java Champions are an exclusive group of passionate Java technology and community leaders who are community-nominated and selected under a project sponsored by Oracle. Nominees are named and selected through a peer review process. Java Champions get the opportunity to provide feedback, ideas, and direction that will help Oracle grow the Java Platform. This interchange may be in the form of technical discussions and/or community-building activities with Oracle's Java Development and Developer Program teams.

• Switching from Visual Studio to Eclipse [closed]

  I've been using Visual Studio for about 6 years now, which is enough time to know most useful keyboard shortcuts and little features. I recently had to switch to Eclipse and java for school, and now I'm constantly searching for the right keys to press. I have searched around for a definitve guide on this, but I couldn't find any. Here's what I want to know: For any feature in Visual Studio, what is the equivalent feature in Eclipse called and what is it's default keyboard shortcut? Are there any things that work very differently in Eclipse, that one might misunderstand or do wrong at first when switching? Are there features in Visual Studio that Eclipse does not have, and is there a workaround? I hope we can create a guide to make life easier for future developers that have to make this switch. You can answer any of the three questions above (no need to do all three), and multiple per answer if you want. I can't mark questions as community wiki anymore, but I do think that's appropriate here.
