• Throttle network bandwidth per application in Mac OS X

  I notice that iTunes seems to suck up all my bandwidth and doesn’t play nice with other applications that use the web when it's downloading. In fact, it doesn't even give itself enough bandwidth when browsing the iTunes Store while downloading large or many files (podcasts, TV shows, large apps, etc). I'm not concerned with getting all my downloads as soon as possible, they're really low priority, and I'd rather not have to do this while I'm awake, but I can't hit the refresh button if I'm in bed and forgot it already. Is there an application or tool via the Terminal to limit the download bandwidth that iTunes gets without also hindering web browsers or other applications? FOSS/GPL software is preferable, but pay software might be acceptable too.

• Cisco ASA Hairpinning with Dynamic IP

  I currently have my Cisco ASA 5505 firewall configured to forward port 80 from the outside interface to a host on my dmz interface. I also need to allow clients on my inside interface to access the host in the dmz by entering the public ip / dns record in their browsers. I was able to do that by following the instructions here, resulting in the following configuration: static (dmz,outside) tcp interface www 192.168.1.5 www netmask 255.255.255.255 static (dmz,inside) tcp 74.125.45.100 www 192.168.1.5 www netmask 255.255.255.255 (Where 74.125.45.100 is my public IP and 192.168.1.5 is the IP of the dmz host) This works great except for the fact that my network has a dynamic public IP and this configuration will therefore break as soon as my public IP changes. Is there a way to do what I want with a dynamic ip? Note: Adding an internal DNS record won't solve my problem since I have multiple dmz hosts mapped to different ports on the public IP.

• Windows Network Load Balancing on ESX Cluster with Dell PowerConnect stacks

  We recently switched out our Cisco 6500 core switch for a pair of Dell PowerConnect 6248 stacks. Since then, our Network Load Balanced Sharepoint, which runs on two virtual machines on an ESX cluster has been behaving very poorly. The symptoms are that opening and saving documents stored in sharepoint takes a very very long time. There are no errors showing up on the Sharepoint servers or SQL server, just a lot of annoyed users. Initially I thought there was no way NLB could cause this, but as soon as we repointed the DNS records for our intranet to the ip address of one of the web front ends, the problems disappeared. We suspect there is an issue related to multicast in the Dell configs - NLB is configured for multicast, but not IGMP. Has anyone got a similar set up to us and fixed this sort of issue? Sharepoint on VMware ESX, with Dell PowerConnect switches.

• Enabling media streaming from a removable drive using Windows Media Player

  I have Windows Media Player set up to stream video to several devices in my apartment. I had recently run out of space so I purchased an external drive to store my videos/music etc. I can add the media to my WMP library and play it locally without issue. As soon as I try to access the media from another device that supports media streaming (Media player or another PC) only the media stored on a fixed drive is available. Is there a way to enable media sharing from a removable drive or somehow trick WMP that the media is stored on a fixed drive? I tried setting up a SymLink linking a directory on the fixed drive to the removable one but with the same result.

• Can't re-install OS on Asus Eee PC 1018P

  My friend has an Asus Eee PC 1018P. It has no CD/DVD drive (neither does he have a USB CD/DVD drive). The OS wasn't working fine, so we decided to restore the system using the provided OS backup from HD. But mid way through the installation it was interrupted and the computer was restarted (not a hardware or software issue – we did it). Now we cannot run the backup and we also tried to install Windows 7 through USB, but as soon as we start to install the OS, it says that some device driver is missing. It turns out that the OS needs a USB device driver to continue. It has USB 3.0 – maybe that's why the OS needs the driver. I tried disabling 3.0 and enabling 2.0 but then it does not boot from USB drive for some reason. We are stuck with this. The backup doesn't run and when booting from USB, it says that it needs a device driver. Anyone has any idea what we could do?

• mono: application not running when web.config in subfolder

  I run asp.net on mono. I wanted to run blogengine: http://www.dotnetblogengine.net/ I downloaded, put it in /var/www/blogengine, on the console went to /var/www/blogengine and started xsp2. I went to http://localhost:8080, and it ran without problems. Then I stopped xsp2, went to /var/www and started xsp2. I went to http://localhost:8080/blogengine It ended with a strange error: The section <blogProvider> can't be defined in this configuration file (the allowed definition context is 'MachineToApplication'). (/var/www/blogengine/Web.Config line 9) The problem seems to be that it stops working as soon as the xsp2 root folder is anything else than the application root folder... Do I have to config anything ? Or what else is wrong ?

• Disk I/O error copying a Exchange 2007 database

  Hi all, A short time ago due to disk space I moved our Exchange database onto an external drive, the drive was new and the database was being backed up daily. I've now discovered the database is corrupt, I've run the Exchange utils to fix the database and this works but it corrupts again as soon as I try to move it. I need to get it off the disk, any suggestions? I'm also trying to restore the last good database but I'd like try to get the database off this disk, any suggestions? PS I know putting the db on an external disk was a bad move, I had no where else to put it :-( Thanks

• Why does my motherboard go through an endless reboot cycle when 8 GB of memory is attempted vs 6 GB?

  I never got an answer in my googling to this about a year ago and have an extra stick of memory I'd like to be able to use. When is inserted the computer starts, and then reboots immediately in an endless reboot cycle. As soon as the 4th stick is removed, the computer works fine. Right now I have 6 GB of my 8 GB installed. Is there a solution that I am missing to enabling this motherboard to actually boot up with all 8 GB (it supports it). Right now it won't even boot up to BIOS with the 4 sticks... only 3? • Files missing after copying from one sdcard to another using Ubuntu 12.04

  I have two Kingston sdcards 8GB and 32GB. The 8GB for HTC Sensation and 32GB for my Tablet (Chinese). I soon ran out of space on my phone and decided to swap the data between the sdcards. I copied the data of 32GB sdcard to my PC(with Ubuntu 12.04) deleted everything on the 32GB sdcard and copied data from the 8GB sdcard to the other sdcard. At last I copied the data from my PC to the 8GB sdcard(before this I deleted everything that was on it before). Now the problem is that the 8GB sdcard has the data exactly the same, but the 32GB sdcard has some missing data. All my photos(not copied or posted on Facebook) and Songs are lost. Please help as to what I can do to get my data back? I have Android Revolution HD (ICS 4.0.3) on my rooted HTC Sensation (India). I suspect it has something to do with my data loss.

• Access Western Digital My Book World II RAID array on my Ubuntu Linux

  Hi, My WD My Book World II (Blue Rings) NAS has overheated, I think the motherboard is dead. I extracted the disks and plugged them in my desktop PC running Ubuntu Linux. The disks seems to be alive, they are spinning and the BIOS recognize them but Ubuntu is not able to boot as soon as these drives are plugged in. I got an initramfs shell after few minutes telling explaining that the root disk is not available. I suspect that one of my WD drives took the precedence on the system ? Considering that Ubuntu is able to boot and can see my Western Digital disks... is it possible to access the RAID 0 array ? How ? Many thanks for your help, regards, -- Pierre Yager

  I plan to install a 500GB drive in my notebook (HP dv2613tu/1.5gHz/4MB RAM) and need advice about optimum size and number of partitions to create. Ideally looking for the following: OS (Windows 7 Ultimate) Swap file Applications Data ??? As a long time Mac user I'm not nearly as informed about Windows. I could leave everything as a single partition, but am seeking maximum performance and efficiency from my system (which won't be changing anytime soon). So, would separate partitions help with this aim? And given my usual habit of accumulating stuff, I want to reserve most space for Applications and Data. I've also set myself a project over the next couple of years of digitizing the whole of my 35 y.o. collection of slides and photographs from my travelling days. Thanks. Pat. Mitchell

• Rsync from godaddy to OS X

  I would like to use rsync to backup my website to my local computer (OS X). I started of with this guide and got pretty far. I use the following rsync-line: rsync -PzrlptgD --del --delete-excluded -r --rsync-path=~/bin/rsync user@server:~/ /local/backup/folder/ I wanted to use the -a option (same as rlptgoD) but it crashes as soon as I use the -o flag. receiving file list ... rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (8 bytes received so far) [receiver] rsync error: unexplained error (code 255) at /SourceCache/rsync/rsync-42/rsync/io.c(452) [receiver=2.6.9] If I skip the --owner flag it copies the files but I'm not really sure what difference it makes (I've tried to read up on it but found nothing) Should I just skip using the --owner flag? • Migrating from DD-WRT to Tomato

  Is it possible to switch to the latest version of Tomato on a router that's already running DD-WRT? Using the default Linksys firmware on my WRT54GL v1.1, I had to upload a micro version of DD-WRT first. I imagine that, since I'm now running third-party firmware, I won't have to do that again to make the switch, but I thought I should check so as not to brick it. This router is taking a back seat to a new AirPort Extreme (for the 'n' capability), but I still want to have the soon-to-be-Tomato device sit between the AirPort Extreme and my modem for the superior traffic graphing.

I have the following alternatives: CentOS 5.2 Ubuntu 9.10 Ubuntu Server edition 8.10 Debian 5.0 Lenny Debian 4.0 Etch Gentoo Minimal 10.0 I tried to install couple of them, I've also installed Webmin and doesn't really see any big differences among them. Which one would you suggest for someone who is just learning (but it's going to be a working server as soon as I'm done with testing)? Which one uses less resources (I have only 256 MB of RAM)? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

  On a Windows Server 2012 box, I'm using PS to create a new IIS User (for automated deployments using MSDeploy). • AVG 9 (Internet Security Business Edition) and IIS 6.0

  Are any of you using AVG 9 Internet Security Business Edition along with IIS 6.0 and if so have you experienced problems? We just went from 8.5 to 9.0... Luckily I tried on only one of the servers in the web farm first to run for a week to make sure it played well with my servers. A few hours after the install all web apps were giving a "connection refused" error. Neither iisrest or restarting world wide web publishing services resolves the issue, only rebooting the machine brings the webs back up. They are all ASP.Net sites by the way (v2.5). What's interesting is if I take the machine out of the load balancer, the machine runs fine and the webs are just fine for days... as soon as i put it back in the pool it's only a few hours before its sad. The only thing I can think of right now is that the Resident Shield may be causing an issue, any thoughts?

• configuring two network interfaces in ubuntu 10.04.1

  I have got two NICs configured on a VM - each is tied to a specific network, one is a DMZ, the other is an internal network. I want MySQL to listen on the internal network only and Apache on the DMZ listening for HTTP and HTTPS. But as soon as I add the second interface I run into trouble. I can hit HTTP on either interface, but can not hit 3306 on the internal network for MySQL. • Changing Windows Media Center StartRecording Task Scheduler options

  Hi, I'm experiencing some occasional crashes waking from sleep and I believe it may be related to the Corsair SSD F40GB2 as my boot disk...or the new Ceton tuner I recently installed... I dunno what the real problem is as I can't reproduce the problem manually. I read somewhere that I should not allow the hard disks to sleep...so I'm trying that in the meantime... At any rate, I don't really care that the computer crashes so long as WMC will start recording the task as soon as possible...the task is scheduled to wake the computer 5 minutes before the recording starts. I noticed that there is a StartRecording param in the Media Center folder in Task Scheduler. There is an option (currently unchecked) that will retry a failed task. I would like to know if there is a way to enable that checkbox. My hope is that if my PC crashes when waking up for this task, that after it reboots the task will trigger again and start recording.   I'm trying to get gitosis installed because I want to use Indefero and I need a deamon for the git:// protocol. However, following the instructions in the Git Pro book (http://progit.org/book/ch4-7.html) I run into trouble pretty soon. This is what happens: [x@x gitosis]# sudo -H -u git gitosis-init < /tmp/id_dsa.pub Fatal Python error: <stdin> is a directory Aborted The error is really vague to me and I didn't find anything helpful around, except that I think stdin is somehow part of C, which confuses me even more since the error is Python. I really don't understand what's going on, or where to look for clues, so I hope someone can tell me where to look next for more info on the problem. Tnx.

• Hyper-V server 2012 nic teaming setup and virtual switch configuration

  I have a server with 2 nics. I installed Hyper-v 2012 server (not windows server 2012, no gui) I am trying to set up load balancing. I have both nics in the same switch currently in trunk mode and no native vlan. I use the new-netlbfoteam command to create a team with both nics, I can then "set-netlbfoteamnic "Nic Team" -vlanid 4" so that its available to me with a DHCP or static address but as soon as I try to create a virtual switch it becomes unresponsive. My guess is that is due to it removing the vlan tagging I setup. if I add-netlbfoteamnic and set it for vlan 4, then set the IP I can ping it from my management computer but I just get an error "an error occurred while attempting to connect to server "xxxxxx" Check that the Virtual Machine Management service is running and that you are authorized to connect to the server."

• Slow git clone and fetch

  I setuped gitosis on a linux server following this tutorial: http://scie.nti.st/2007/11/14/hosting-git-repositories-the-easy-and-secure-way We are using git on our windows machines with TortoiseGit and msysgit. Pushing changes to the server is pretty fast, but when we want to clone or fetch changes from the remote server, it begins really fast (800k/s) and then drop pretty fast to around 3 to 30k/s and it can take forever to update. git-pull for small update is fast, but as soon as we have to download something of more than a few MB, it is slow. We are switching from SVN to git and this is holding us back from using git full time. Thanks!

  I have a Python script running on my server as a FastCGI using Apache2 and mod_fcgid. I let it spawn up to five processes. • Error Message: Primary Slave Drive - ATAPI Incompatible

  So I recently switched towers and now, all of a sudden, I'm getting this error message as soon as I boot my system. The error message reads "Primary Slave Drive - ATAPI Incompatible". This has really been frustrating since there's NO Primary Slave Drive even installed in my computer!! I have one hard drive installed which is recognized as the Primary Master & a DVD Drive which is recognized as the Secondary Master. My old system ran flawlessly. I'm beginning to think maybe my motherboard is bugging out cuz I fail to understand how it can be telling me that a "nonexistent" drive is incompatible. Any suggestions??

• Start script on network connect

  I am trying to get a GNU/Linux Bash script to run as soon as a network connection is established on my Raspberry Pi. I tried following the instructions on several pages: I have tried adding my script to /etc/network/if-up.d and running sudo chmod ugo+x on the file. I have tried adding the line post-up <path/to/script.sh> to /etc/network/interfaces I am really quite clueless here. • USB MFP print server that works with Windows x64?

  Right now, we are using the Longshine LCS-MFP101-2 to connect to our MFP device (printer/scanner combo) over LAN. However, the required driver (RMVUSB, Remote Virtual USB) cannot be installed on 64 bit Windows operating systems such as Windows XP x64 or Windows 7 x64. Since the distributor lists the product as "phased out", I do not expect any updated 64 bit drivers any time soon. :/ Because of that, I am searching for a relatively cheap SOHO MFP print server (1 USB port should be enough) which can be used with 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Windows. Do you have any ideas or recommendations? Thanks!
