  • What precaution should I take to hire online freelancer designers? [on hold]

    For quite some time my company is super busy with our apps, and a few days ago someone contacted me by email offering his services to help me as a graphic designer. He has a fair price, a flickr portfolio (with great stuff but not popular at all), same on Twitter. I was really considering in hiring him for some specific service, but the question is... what precaution should I take when hiring someone I have no idea who is? I can't even be sure I have his real name and his real country. How do I make a contract? How do I pay? How do I know he will not sue us after the graphics reach the App Store asking for more money? And of course, how do I know he will actually do the service and not steal from some stock service? Am I a bit paranoiac or is this a common deal with graphics designers? PS: if someone asks I can provide his flickr, but I think this is a general question and not specific for this designer.

  • Found a better solution to a problem at work - should I deter from posting the code snippet online?

    I think most of us, programmers, used Stack Overflow to solve every day problems: looked for an efficient algorithm to do something. Now imagine a situation: you have a problem to solve. Googled a bit, found a StackOverflow question but you are not really satisfied with the answers so far. So you have to do your own research: you need to do it because you want it in the company's app. Eventually after some hours you have found the better solution. You're happy, you added it to the company's code base, then you want to submit your answer with a code snippet (just several lines) to the question you've found before to help others too. But wait: the company's software is closed source, and you worked on it on the clock. So does this mean I shouldn't post the answer neither at work nor at home to that question in the rest of my life, because I solved it at work, and the company owns that piece of code?

  • Setting up router: I can get online via Ethernet, and I can connect to router wirelessly, but can't

    I'm setting up a new D-Link N300 router, and trying to connect a MacBook Pro and a MacBook, both running OS X 10.6. As the question says, either computer can connect to the internet when connected to the router via Ethernet. And either one can get on the router's wireless network. But when connected wirelessly (without the Ethernet cable plugged in), neither one can get online. I can't figure out why that would be. Any help appreciated.

    Hi, I'm running wbadmin from a scheduled job, backing up my C: and D: drives to my E: and (I believe!) including the system state: wbadmin start backup -backuptarget:e: -include:c:,d: -allCritical -noVerify -quiet I'd like to delete old backups, but I'm concerned that all the information I can find says to use wbadmin to delete old system state backups, and vssadmin to delete other backups. As far as I know, my backups ARE system state backups, but are using VSS on E: for storage, so I'm worried about trying either of these techniques for fear of losing all my backups. This is a home network, so I don't have a spare server to test this on. I'm also happy to simply restrict the space used on E:, but I can't make sense of the difference between the /for and /on parameters of the relevant vssadmin command.   • System State Backup Retention Policies

    I was wondering if there was a general consensus on how long to keep system state backups. I am trying to reevaluate our current backup process, and trying to get a good handle on our current storage requirements. Our current setup involves tapes and sending backups offsite with Barracuda Networks. We have been doing our system state backups with Barracuda now, which does full backups daily, leaving our storage requirements growing quite quickly. My boss is a little too gung-ho with backups and wants our system states saved for quite a while. We currently have 5 days of nightlies, 5 weeklies, 3 monthlies, and so on. I think this is quite overkill for system state backups. My boss wants the ability to go back in time to find when an issue appeared, but I don't think that is practical. Many things change in the course of several months. I also think it would be hard not to notice problems with our DCs and other servers for several months. I would think that a previous week's snapshot and the current week's dailies would suffice. Any advice or reading you can point me to? Thanks!

  • Need help trying to allow my remote PowerShell script to run on my Windows 2008 r2 Server

    I've got a Windows 2008 r2 server with Sql Server 2008 r2 installed. I've got a Sql Server Agent which tries to run a Powershell job, but fails :- Message Executed as user: FooServer\SqlServerUser. A job step received an error at line 1 in a PowerShell script. The corresponding line is '& '\\polanski\Backups\Database\7ZipFooDatabases.ps1'' Correct the script and reschedule the job. The error information returned by PowerShell is: 'File \\polanski\Backups\Database\7ZipFooDatabases.ps1 cannot be loaded. The file \\polanski\Backups\Database\7ZipFooDatabases.ps1 is not digitally signed. The script will not execute on the system. Please see "get-help about_signing" for more details.. '. Process Exit Code -1. The step failed. Ok. So i run Powershell on that server then set the execution policy to unrestricted. To check .. PS C:\Users\theUser> Get-ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted PS C:\Users\theUser> Kewl :) but it still doesn't work :( Ok ... what happens when i try to run the powershell from the command line.... PS C:\Users\justin.adler . '\polanski\Backups\Database\7ZipMotorshoutDatabases.ps1' Security Warning Run only scripts that you trust. While scripts from the Internet can be useful, this script can potentially harm your computer. Do you want to run \\polanski\Backups\Database\7ZipFooDatabases.ps1?   • Which components should I invest in.. for a backup machine.

    I am a freelance developer. I have a PC, a laptop and an old testing and file server machine. I might add one or two in future. I want to have an on-site backup machine that can handle backups of ALL these machines - file backups, MySQL backups, backup of subversion repository, etc.. When building the machine, which components should I invest more in? Examples: The cabinet should have lots of room for expansion. Hard disk size should be large. But I guess hard disk speed need not be high (?) But other components like, RAM, PSU, Processor, Network card, Cooling, etc.. how much relative importance do these have in a backup machine? Which of these components should be high-end or large, and which ones need not be? Some Idea of the load: There will TBs of data. File backups and subversion repository backups will at least be done daily. MySQL backups done weekly. assume 3 machines at the moment and somewhere around 10 machines in the future.

  • "Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action" windows XP, outlook 2007, connect to e

    Hey, I can't connect to an exchange server using windows XP and outlook 2007, using the "connect anywhere over HTTP" process, it has been working until recently and the user reports no recent changes to his environment. The error is "Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action" It will prompt me for the username and password which I can enter, then it will give the errorm however this only happens when I delete the account and enter all details for the excahnge server again. The client computer that is unable to connect using outlook can connect to the HTTPS mail service and login send/receive fine. Nobody else has reported issues. making a test environment with a clean install of XP and outlook 2007 gives the same error, but using windows 7 and outlook 2007 connects perfectly fine everytime. I also removed all passwords using control keymgr.dll which didnt help. Any assistance or ideas would be appreciated, at this point nothing I've tried from technet or google works <_<

    i have configured exchange server 2010 on windows server 2008 and my email server is: mail.centors.com and my user account is [email protected] when i tried to configure outlook 2010 to add this exchange account following the tutorial here: http://support.itsolutionsnow.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=153 i am getting the error: The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete i restarted the service microsoft exchange attendant services but still keeps getting same error. please advise how to fix this issue with little details since i am a developer not a system admin.

    Novice question here, but how can I watch TV on my PC without using online sites? I have heard of tv tuners but is it just a matter of hooking a tv tuner to your computer and that's it? Do I have to just buy a tuner or pay for a service as well? If no service needs to be paid for, will I get just regular channels or cable/satellite channels as well? Will my PC need to be connected to the Internet when I want to watch TV? Do I need any type of software aside from the hardware tuner?
