• How to eliminate authentication on my MVC app that is called from asp.net forms app

  Curious what recommendations anyone has. I have an existing asp.net forms application that does a Forms Authentication and has identity impersonate turned on. The application has a link to a questionnaire that I would like to develop separately in an asp.net MVC application, but I don't want the users to click on the link and be prompted for a username and password, I would like them to be able seamless start filling out the questionnaire. Is there a way to somehow transfer authentication from one .net app to another? I would like to be able to pass stuff like UserRole. What's the best way to do this?

• WPF tooltip best practices

  I'm about to change my application to include tool tips for all buttons, combo boxes, etc. I was wondering if there are any recommendations on doing this. For every control I'd like the tooltip to show the control's name in bold, followed by the description. I want to keep the style separated from the control, so I can change the tooltip style globally. What I would like to have, unless there's a better suggestion, is two additional fields per button/combobox/etc: 1-ToolTipName and 2-ToolTipDesc, both containing a string. How can I accomplish this (and is it even possible?).

• Best Online C++ Refresher

  It's been a longtime since I've done any C++ (probably about 13 years, since I graduated college). I've developing in various others languages since then. My new gig uses a fair bit of C++. Any recommendations for getting bootstrapped? To clarify -- I don't need an "into to programming" book. E.g., what's a variable, flow control, etc. I understand the concepts of OO having implemented them, etc. I'm looking for the best way to get to the specifics of C++.

• WPF Books in 2010

  I'm looking to learn WPF, and I'd like to get a book to help in the process. Most of the popular questions on SO regarding actual books are from 2008, and I wanted to see if recommendations for books had changed at all. WPF Unleashed, which seems to be the most popular recommendation, was published in 2006, which is quite a while ago, with the lightening-quick pace that Microsoft has been following with .NET. Does this book still work? For some background, I'm a web developer (using MVC, so MVVM makes sense to me conceptually), looking to make the jump to desktop development. I did C# a while ago, but I'll be picking up a separate C# book to get up to speed on that. I am not interested in Silverlight. I am not necessarily interested in flashy UIs right now, as I'm working on business software but what I am interested in is good, clean, intuitive user interfaces.

• Webservice for serial port devices

  Hi I want to create a remote webservice for an application that is now avaliable only localy. This application controlls three devices (each is controlled separately) connected on serial port. The problem is that I don't know how to take care of passing back information that a device return requested data. For example - I send move command to the motion device (which is very slow and can take a minute or more). Can I just set a big timeout on the client side (and server side) and return for example a true/false if operation is completed or is this a bad idea? Is SOAP with big timeouts ok? And the other question is if Mono on Linux (Ubuntu 9.10, Mono 2.4) is stable enought for making a web service or should I chose Java or some other language? I'm open for recommendations. • Implementation communication protocols in C/C++

  I am in the process of starting to implement some proprietary communication protocol stack in software but not sure where to start. It is the kind of work I have not done before and I am looking for help in terms of resources for best/recommended approaches. I will be using c/c++ and I am free to use use libraries (BSD/BOOST/Apache) but no GPL. I have used C++ extensively so using the features of C++ is not a problem. The protocol stack has three layers and it is already fully specified and formally verified. So all I need to do is implemented and test it fully in the specified languages. Should also mention that protocol is very simple but can run on different devices over a reliable physical transport layer Any help with references/recommendations will be appreciated. I am willing to use a different language if only to help me understand how to implement them but I will have to eventually resort to the language of choice.

• Sharing a fabfile across multiple projects

  Fabric has become my deployment tool of choice both for deploying Django projects and for initially configuring Ubuntu slices. However, my current workflow with Fabric isn't very DRY, as I find myself: copying the fabfile.py from one Django project to another and modifying the fabfile.py as needed for each project (e.g., changing the webserver_restart task from Apache to Nginx, configuring the host and SSH port, etc.). One advantage of this workflow is that the fabfile.py becomes part of my Git repository, so between the fabfile.py and the pip requirements.txt, I have a recreateable virtualenv and deployment process. I want to keep this advantage, while becoming more DRY. It seems that I could improve my workflow by: being able to pip install the common tasks defined in the fabfile.py and having a fab_config file containing the host configuration information for each project and overriding any tasks as needed Any recommendations on how to increase the DRYness of my Fabric workflow?

• How do i hide html until its processed with javascript?

  I am using some JS code to transform my menu into a drilldown menu. The problem is before it runs the JS you see a BIG UGLY mess of links. On their site its solved by putting the js at the top. Using recommendations by yahoo/YSlow i am keeping the JS files at the bottom. I tried hiding the menu with display:none then using jquery to .show(), .css('display', ''), .css('display', 'block') and they all lead up to a messsed up looking menu (i get the title but not the title background color or any links of the menu) How do i properly hide a div/menu and show it after being rendered?

• Refactoring thick client legacy application

• Append all logs to /var/log

  Application scenario: I have the (normal/permanent) /var/log mounted on an encrypted partition (/dev/LVG/log). /dev/LVG/log is not accessible at boot time, it needs to be manually activated later by su from ssh. A RAM drive (using tmpfs) is mounted to /var/log at init time (in rc.local). Once /dev/LVG/log is activated, I need a good way of appending everything in the tmpfs to /dev/LVG/log, before mounting it as /var/log. Any recommendations on what would be a good way of doing so? • Can you recommend wiki, forum, blog & cms plugins for an existing Rails app or should I go the route

  Hello. I have an existing Rails internal app, that handles inventory, invoicing, order taking, labeling, data imports/exports, etc, etc. Now I need to add blog, cms, forum and wiki functionality to it. It seems silly to try to roll out my own solutions when there are already some out there. So I was wondering if people could recommend based on their experience: Are there good plugins out there? (Which ones you had experience with?) Would you rather recommend to go the route of engines, and integrate RadiantCMS or similar apps? (please provide recommendations based on your integration experience) Or would you just bite the bullet and roll out your own? Thank you. P.S.: Right now the app is Rails 2.3, but it will get upgraded to Rail 3 in a year, when most gems/plugins that it depends on will be Rails 3 compatible.

• Is there an ORM with APIs to be used programatically?

  Hello. Neither did not get any response for my previous question, nor enough views :) So here I am now framing my query afresh. Is there any ORM that offers APIs to be used programatically? In my situation, a user will be helped through a wizard to define some entities. Thereafter those entites will be created in a database in form of tables (there will of course be some improvization). I need an ORM that offers APIs for modeling and creating entities during application runtime and not just during design time. Mine is a .Net application, therefore I was looking at Entity Framework. However, to me it looked tied to Visual Studio (I may be wrong also as I am new to it). Any recommendations? Or alternative point of view?

• Browser, upload large file

  I'm looking for a way to allow a user to upload a large file (~1gb) to my unix server using a web page and browser. There are a lot of examples that illustrate how to do this with a traditional post request, however this doesn't seem like a good idea when the file is this large. I'm looking for recommendations on the best approach. Bonus points if the method includes a way of providing progress information to the user. For now security is not a major concern, as most users who will be using the service can be trusted. We can also assume that the connection between client and host will not be interrupted (or if it is they have to start over).

• Rails: How can I log all requests which take more than 4s to execute?

  I have a web app hosted in a cloud environment which can be expanded to multiple web-nodes to serve higher load. What I need to do is to catch this situation when we get more and more HTTP requests (assets are stored remotely). How can I do that? The problem I see from this point of view is that if we have more requests than mongrel cluster can handle then the queue will grow. And in our Rails app we can only count only after mongrel will receive the request from balancer.. Any recommendations?

• C#. Struct design. Why 16 byte is recommended size?

  I read Cwalina book (recommendations on development and design of .NET apps). He says that good designed struct has to be less than 16 bytes in size (for performance purpose). My questions is - why exactly is this? And (more important) can I have larger struct with same efficiency if I run my .NET 3.5 (soon to be .NET 4.0) 64-bit application on i7 under Win7 x64 (is this limitation CPU / OS based)? Just to stress again - I need as efficient struct as it is possible. I try to keep it in stack all the time, the application is heavily multi-threaded and runs on sub-millisecond intervals, the current size of the struct is 64 byte.

This article from Lifehacker mentions some OS. Anybody use these in conjunction with R? Any help would be much appreciated.

I will need mostly two types of contructs: Top-level constructs for specialized types or declarations In-code constructs, i.e. to add primitives to make functions calls or idiom easier The language will be used for scientific computing purposes, and will ultimately be translated into plain C++. C++ has been chosen as it seems to offer a good compromise between: ease of use, efficiency and availability of a wide range of libraries. A previous attempt using flex and bison failed due to the complexity of the C++ syntax. The existing parser can still fail on some constructs. So we want to start over, but on better bases.   Hello, It happened that I need to pick up PHP based open source CMS. I did a small research and found many candidates. CMS made simple seems to be right choice, but I am not sure what's the current state, I know it was widely used time ago. I need it to be fully compliant with web standarts, lightweight (especially interface). It needs to be as simple as possible - basically just style and page content editing (news, maybe some image gallery) is enough. Sure content and style have to be separated from each other since content will be edited by non-programmer. One of the main goals is SEO so I'd like it to have friendly URLs. I think CMSes like Joomla, Drupal and Wordpress are too big for this project. Are there any recommendations ?

I have something like <loadfile srcFile="@{some.input}" property="my.property"> Since Ant properties are immutable, this doesn't work for me. I need 'my.property' to update on every iteration. Is there a way to achieve this? I know Ant-contrib has a <var> task but I'm not sure how to use <loadfile> with it. Any recommendations? Thanks.

• How to track conversion rate (clicks to sales) from an internal advertising system?

  I am currently writing an interal advertising system for a company client's website, where the adverts will only be seen by internal users, and all transactions take place internally to the site (i.e. the adverts are for member-only content available on the site). Does anyone have any recommendations as to the best way to track the conversion rate of these adverts (i.e. views:clicks:sales)? EDIT I'm not looking for a 'Why don't you use google analystics'-type answer, I'm looking into possible architecture outlines, i.e. a 'why don't use store a guid in a cache temporarily and see if it ties to the advert' kind of answer. /EDIT In a previous job I did something based on an internal cache, which simply did view:click tracking, however the addition of the sales rate makes this task more complex, especially if we take into account the idea that someone may click through to an advert and not purchase immediately.   Does anybody know of a good service or tool for continuos application monitoring? I'm looking specifically for something that is hosted, so we don't have to worry to much about the fact that the monitoring tool is actually running. Specifically, we have a few e-commerce customers that we would like to provide detailed monitoring services for. We don't want to simply monitor uptime, we'd like to go through the entire checkout process once a day or even more often to ensure everything's working (adding to cart, shipping calculations, payment processing, etc).
