  I hope you can help me... I made a perl and bash script to make a backup of my firewalls and tranfers via tftp #!/bin/sh perl /deploy/scripts/backups/10.160.23.1.pl > /dev/null 2>&1 perl /deploy/scripts/backups/10.160.23.2.pl > /dev/null 2>&1 so this tranfers the file to my tftp directory /tftpboot/ ls -l /tftpboot/ total 532 -rw-rw-rw- 1 tftp tftp 209977 jun 6 14:01 10.160.23.1_20140606.cfg -rw-rw-rw- 1 tftp tftp 329548 jun 6 14:02 10.160.23.2_20140606.cfg my questions is how to improve my script to moving this files dynamically to another folder based on the name (in this case on the ip address) for example: 10.160.23.1_20140606.cfg move to /deploy/backups/10.160.23.1/ is that the answer to this surely was on Google, but wanted to know if there was a particular solution to this request and also learn how to do :) Thanks!

• When starting or log off/on, add'l panels show and some panel applets are duplicated

  After upgrading to 12.04 Gnome Classic amd64,every time I log on a new additional blank panel appears on the top and bottom panels - which I delete every time. In addition, the default panel applets are duplicated in the original panels. Also the panels in the second screen are empty (in addition to the wallpaper being hidden). Update: As suggested by fossfreedomm I created a new user and the same behavior occurred. I increased the height of the panels (2436) and the added panels did not change. If I don't remove the added panels and log off/on I get still another - they accumulate. If I switch user instead of logoff/logon, the add'l panel do not appear.

• Split a text file by its entries

  Hi, I'm trying to analyze an enormous text file (1.6GB), whose data lines look like this: 20090118025859 -2.400000 78.100000 1023.200000 0.000000 20090118025900 -2.500000 78.100000 1023.200000 0.000000 20090118025901 -2.400000 78.100000 1023.200000 0.000000 I don't even know how many lines there are. But I'm trying to split the file by date. The left number is a time stamp (these lines are from 2009, January 18th). How can I split this file into pieces according to the date? Everything I know would be to grep file '20090118*' > data20090118.dat , but there sure is a way to do all the dates at once, right? The number of entries per date differ, so using split with a constant number won't work. Thanks in advance, Alex

  I am looking for a chat room solution similar to the one on StackExchange to facilitate more responsive communication between the contributors on Open-Org.com. My criteria are the following: No Flash (this rules out more than half) Full history (meaning that it is possible to access all previous conversation for future reference. Very customizable No ugly IRC stuff filling up the chat view (I do not want to see who joined an who left etc.) No private conversations possible (this is just not in the spirit of Open-org.com) A hosted solution with a reasonable price. These criteria are so different from this question, so this is not a duplicate question. The service which matches this the closest is Chatroll.com. However, at 199$ per month their prices are outrageous.

  I am using cygwin to find a file on the cygdrive. However I need to suppress the permission denied messages (otherwise the results get hidden in the error messages). The following command works: find -name 'myfile.*' |& grep -v "Permission denied" I don't understand why the ampersand needs to be put into this command, would have expected this to work but it doesn't. find -name 'myfile.*' | grep -v "Permission denied" Please explain the meaning of the ampersand.

I am new to subversion (and programming) so I have been reading the official PDF documentations but still not sure about how to set-up my repository. I am working mainly with python, bash and rsl (Renderman Shading Language) So I already have a /dev structure on my disk as this: http://imageshack.us/f/708/devstructure.png/ And I have a /site structure that links to my /dev folder: http://imageshack.us/f/651/sitestructure.png/ So obviously starting to use SVN will change this approach that I already have in place. The question is when I am setting-up my SVN repository for the work I do in my /dev folder: Will I set-up a separate repository for each different programming platform? and Where exactly I should be placing my repository?   Very recently I have started to write python scripts that need to connect few databases on mySQL server. The problem is that when I work from office my script works fine but running a script from my home while on office VPN generates connection error. I also noticed the mySQL client Squirrel also cannot connect from my home but works fine on Office computer. I think both are giving problem for the same reason. Do I need to create a ssh tunnel and forward the port? If yes how do I do it? mySQL is installed on server I have ssh access. Please help me on this AK

• Nautilus tags/labels/marks/emblems for directories

  Is there any way how to mark folders or files with tags(or labels or whatever) in Nautilus? It would be nice to sort marked folders or files through this tags. I am familiar with emblems but I cant sort through it and its complicated to assign emblem to folder(3 clicks at least). Especially my first idea was to mark folders in my Movie directory with tags seen, not seen, must see, and so on. Then I realized it would be useful in any other workspace with any custom tags... Is there any nautilus extension for this? Or any other file manager which can do this?

  The way that Ubuntu handles documents on the iPad is awesome (without any configuration required). It beats windows, even after you install iTunes. I want to have the documents in certain iPad apps automatically synced into my Dropbox directory whenever the iPad is connected by USB. The syncing is easy; getting the script to run is not. I have already read the information in various (very out-of-date) tutorials. (Please note that when an iPad is connected, Ubuntu seems to mount it to two different mount points: one for "Documents" and one for the whole iPad filesystem.   I just experienced an unusual crash: I tried to click on a name entry in the contact list of Empathy. A crash happened. Usually I am asked then if I'd like to report the error to Launchpad, and Launchpad opens. This time the error message was: "Excuse me. Ubuntu 12.04 noticed an internal error. If you notice further problems try to restart your computer. Send an error report to Launchpad to help removing this problem?" This time Launchpad did not open automatically. A new window opened and I could read the relevant error report. Later I found the error report in the file /var/crash/_usr_lib_empathy_empathy-chat.1000.crash. Why went the course of action this time differently from other crashes? Why is the file /var/crash/_usr_lib_empathy_empathy-chat.1000.upload empty?

• Markup format or script for data files?

  The game I'm designing will be mainly written in a high level scripting language (leaning towards either Lua or Squirrel) with a C++ core. In addition to scripts I'm also going to need different data files. Many data files will be for static information such as graphical assets and monster types. I'd also want to create and update data files at runtime for user information like option settings and game saves. Can I get away with using plain script files (i.e. .lua or .nut files) for my data files, or is it better to use dedicated markup formats like XML or YAML? If I use script files, loaded separately from my true scripts, then I wouldn't need an extra library to read those files. Scripting languages like Lua also have table syntax that lend themselves towards data definition. On the other hand I'd have to write my own schema check code. These languages also don't seem to support serialization "out of the box" like the markup format libraries do.

  Hi, I would like to create a share link to my website using javascript: script src="[url-to-my-script]" Basically the main idea behind this is to render HTML block with an image and link to the website. By using JavaScript approach I can control the look and feel of that link + potentially I could change the link html in the future without touching partner websites. • Cannot activate num pad at all

  I have two accounts on the same machine. Num pad on one account it working normally e.g. I can turn it ON/OFF via NumLock button. The num pad on the other account on this machine stopped working. I cannot turn it on and the buttons work as the NumLock is turned off. This happened without me touching any setting or all. It just happened and now I cannot turn them on no matter what I try. I tried via console command numlockx on - did not help. Tried via UI setting - did not help either. Updated the system from 11.10 to 12.04, did not help either. I really do not know what to do except I make a clean reinstallation of the system which would take 2 days away from me. It's obviously the problem in this account only, as num pad works in the other account. Anyone with a good suggestion?

• wrong GNOME logo at startup after 12.04 upgrade

  I'm not too expert of Ubuntu, but after a quite painful upgrade to version 12.04 (from 11.10), which first required to reinstall wireless drivers in order to work properly, and after an update from the Update Manager that I ran soon after the upgrade, I have a very strange problem coming up: at login page, where you choose your user among the list of the available ones, I can also see the list of available IDEs (Gnome, Gnome classic, Unity, Unity 2d, etc) but the funny thing is that the classic "foot" logo normally associated to the GNOME selection has now disappeared, and instead the "gear" logo (the one normally related to Unity, is on the side of the "gnome" choice. Note that the foot logo remains associated to the Gnome Classic item, and that the "gear" logo is still associated to the various versions of Unity available. This is not serious, since I can still access my GNOME or Unity environment, but I wonder if I can fix this up.

• Opensource package for securly allowing users to log in and provide information

  I have a site written in mostly php and html. I also have a sql database of personal information like names and addresses. I would like my users to be able to log in to my website with a login I can email or snail mail to them, and view and edit their information on my database. Users can currently enter information online I and store it in my database but they can't view or edit stored information. I can add the code to do this, but when I give users the ability to view information I suddenly have a lot more security concerns. Is there an open source package to deal with allowing users to do something like this? Or is there an established convention for this? I know this is a pretty basic question, and there might be some good literature about it that I have yet to find, so if someone can just point me in the direction of some of that information, or better yet give me firsthand some information about this that would be great.
