• Need assistance for domain forwarding

  Briefly my question is about combining my registered domain with the websites listening on port 80/8080 on my server. I have a web server IIS on windows 7 and two web sites listening on port 80 and 8080. I have successfully forwarded any incoming request to port 80 and 8080 to my web server. So everything works like a charm when I try to access these websites entering http://myglobalip:80/Index.aspx or http://myglobalip:8080/Index.aspx from a computer outside of the local network. So I have a domain registered, lets say www.mydomain.com. What steps should I follow in which sequence? What should I consider to do? I need a step by step guide to follow. I have registered my domain on godaddy's website and only configured forwarding so the domain forward to my webserver but when I attempt to access the web page, It always try and try until It times out.

• Best Practice for Images in Facebook Pages

  Hello I am looking for best practices when it comes to uploading images on facebook fan pages. I notice on Dell, US Cellular, and the Gap that they load all of their images on one of their web servers. Are there any alternatives? I was hoping for something like being able to upload photos and then hide the gallery. But I couldn't find anything like that. The reason that I ask is that I have access to someone's facebook fan page but not to their webserver so it would be extra work to email someone who does have access the photos and have them upload them to their web server.

• How to configure apache / php / postfix website emails when using vhosts?

  I have a LAMP webserver configured to serve multiple websites. Each virtual host has various PHP applications, mainly Wordpress. When users sign up to the Wordpress sites, email is sent by PHP through to postfix, and then on to the receiver. The problem is that postfix is identifying itself to the remote server with the contents of /etc/hostname, which is not a fully qualified domain name. Some mail servers reject this and the mail bounces. Additionally, the return path is being set to one of the vitual host domains, seemingly at random. I could set /etc/hostname to one of the website domain names, but then the emails from the other websites would have a wrong server in the headers, and this would not fix the return-path issue. Possibly related, apache2 says "could not determine the server's fully qualified domain name" on startup. How do I fix this so that each website can send email without revealing the other websites hosted on the server?

• Filtering content from response body HTML (mod_security or other WAFs)

  We have Apache on Linux with mod_security as the Web App Firewall (WAF) layer. To prevent content injections, we have some rules that basically disable a page containing some text patterns from showing up at all. For example, if an HTML page on webserver has slur words (because some webmaster may have copied/pasted text without proofreading) the Apache server throws a 406 error. Our requirement now is a little different: we would like to show the page as regular 200, but if such a pattern is matched, we want to strip out the offending content. Not block the entire page. If we had a server side technology we could easily code for this, but sadly this is for a website with 1000s of static html pages. Another solution might have been to do a cronjob of find/replace strings and run them on folders en-masse, maybe, but we don't have access to the file system in this case (different department). We do have control over WAF or Apache rules if any. Any pointers or creative ideas?

• Nicest way to map rgb colors from html to led

  I have attached an rgb led to a color picker on a webpage and have hit the obvious problem that though the led is 8-bit like html the color rendition is very different so with the more subtle shades the led values for the color are wildly different to the html values. The brute-force method would be for me to have a lookup-table on the webserver to map the two sets of values but would ideally like to do it more elegantly Before I start listing all my 101 ideas for doing this I wondered if anyone else had come across the issue, the end-game would be to be able to abstract the color-rendition of different leds and make it available as a webservice (html value and device id in, led value out)

• Is software innovation still primarily North American and European? Why, and for how much longer?

  Since this site is read by a global audience of programmers, I want to know if people generally agree that the vast majority of software innovation - languages, OS, tools, methodologies, books, etc. - still originates from the USA, Canada, and the EU. I can think of a few exceptions, e.g. Nginx webserver from Russia and the Ruby language from Japan, but overwhelmingly, the software I use and encounter daily is from North America and the EU. Why? Is history and historical momentum (computing having started in USA and Europe) still driving the industry? And/or, is some nebulous (or real) cultural difference discouraging software innovation abroad? Or are those of us in the West simply ignorant of real software innovation going on in Asia, South America, Eastern Europe, etc.? When, if ever, might the centers of innovation move out of the West? Your experiences and opinions welcome, thanks!

  I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS an a number of servers. I have not added any cron jobs or edited my crontab on those servers, however, at around the same time for each machine, I get a 75% CPU spike and the following info in my syslog at the time of the spike: CRON[8380]: (CRON) info (No MTA installed, discarding output) I have mono-complete installed and am running a service stack webserver. What is the best way for me to stop this from happening? I would like to be able to remove the CPU spike. Thanks

  Hi, webmaster tools for my site displays that robots.txt unreachable and for all links in sitemap it says network unreachable. sitemap.xml unreachable. These appear in crawl stats page. I discussed with the support team of my hosting and they said... Hi, I have verified apache logs, i cannot see any issues on your website/webserver/ Possible issues. There may the routing issue from the googles server to our server. When a google bots hits goes high the IP will be automatically blacklisted by our firewall to avoid server loads & downtimes. As we donot have access to their services, We cannot able to give details of their details/logs etc. The sitemaps link shows an exclamation mark which means the file was not reachable. What could be the problem and how to solve it?

• Symlink are using both locations?

  Ive made a research and didnt found any answers, so I decided to ask here. To make you know, the /dev/sda2 disk of my WHM/Cpanel webserver got 100% full. The /var/ folder are the /dev/sda2 and I've found the reason of that isse are the /var/lib/mysql folder. To fix it I need to move the /var/lib/mysql folder from /dev/sda2 to /home/ where I have a lot of space in disk. Then I used the command lines: service mysql stop cp -r -p /var/lib/mysql/ /home/databasesmysql/ mv /var/lib/mysql /var/lib/mysql.backup/ ln -s /home/databasesmysql/ /var/lib/mysql service mysql start Ok, now to check if its running at the new location I just renamed the /var/lib/mysql to /var/lib/mysql.backup and MySQL stopped working. Also when I rename the /home/databasesmysql/ folder MySQL also stop to work. I dont know whats happening, the symlink are using both locations? Thanks very much.

• Installing MoinMoin -wiki to my user directory on a server with no root access

  Hello all, I've been trying to install MoinMoin -wiki on this webserver, where I have no root access. The server doesn't support wsgi, but it does support cgi/fcgi/etc. I've scoured google for a simple guide on how to accomplish this, but the only guides I found were from the year 2004 or so. Other guides always assumed that one has root access. So can anyone link a good tutorial for my question or just help me out here? Your help is appreciated :) P.S. Second Situation The same as before but with one big difference, everything (environment) is installed in the customer, then I need to cryptography all my codes (It includes PHP and Shell Scripts).   I am trying to create a browser game using actionscript/flash. Currently, I'm trying to understand how I would go about creating a back-end which interfaced with my MySQL database. As far as I understand, If I create a php file on a webserver called test.php and then navigate to a webpage hosted on the server eg. www.example.com/test, the php script will run and display the result in my browser. This would use http. Is this how communication between client and server usually works in a flash game? for example, if the game needed to query the db. Would actionscript have to essentially invoke the url of the php script that would execute the query? it could then parse the data and use it. If this is the case, then is JSON considered a good way to transfer data over http?

• forbidden foldername?

  I have a little webserver i run to help me at work. in an effort to neaten up the internal bits, I made a forlder named "doc" for documents. When i try to navigate to that folder i get "You don't have permission to access /doc/ on this server." so then, i looked at the permissions. drwxrwxr-x 2 J0h J0h 4096 Nov 7 22:46 doc/ drwxrwxr-x 5 J0h J0h 4096 Nov 6 12:35 ece/ drwxrwxr-x 2 J0h J0h 4096 Nov 6 12:35 exe/ permissions of "doc" looks legit. ece/ and exe both work, and have the same permissions. So then I changed the name of the folder "doc" to "docs" and it works. So evidently the folder-name doc is a black listed folder name? is that right? what is going one here?

  Use Case: Photos are organised in a folder structure by date (by software lightroom/picasa) Want to run a local webserver to host a web gallery from (already know how to run lamp etc) I want to be able to attach metadata to the photos (probably through a database not residing in the photos folder) such that they can be tagged/categoried/albumed without affecting the original photos I want to be able to assign permissions to different albums to set users I want the software to watch the photo source folder for changes so that new photos are indexed ready for applying metadata and albums. I'd like the software to handle the rendering of numerous file types (photo formats) as well as video formatts I am language agnostic so php/python heck even c#, just want software that forfills the requirements. • Question about server usage, big community platform

  I’m working on a community platform writen in PHP, MySQL. I have some questions about the server usage maybe someone can help me out. The community is based on JQuery with many ajax requests to update content. It makes 5 - 10 AJAX(Json, GET, POST) requests every 5 seconds, the requests fetch user data like user notifications and messages by doing mySQL queries. I wonder how a server will handle this when there are for more than 5000 users online. Then it will be 50.000 requests every 5 seconds, what kind of server you need to handle this? Or maybe even more, when there are 15.000 users online, 150.000 requests every 5 seconds. My webserver have the following specs. Xeon Quad 2048MB 5000GB traffic Will it be good enough, and for how many users? Anyone can help me out or know where to find such information, like make a calculation?

It's playable at open Beta and will be released at the end of the year. I used Plain Old JAVA, JPCT 3D Engine, Tomcat Webserver and Blender 3D / Gimp to manage all the tasks. I developed the whole game from scratch. For me the hardest task in this challenge is probably the whole thing about marketing and advertisement.   I'm a web developer. When I start designing a site, I use a framework to handle templating for me, even if it's just rack + erubis. What do non-developers do? If you want to implement a site in HTML and CSS without a framework running on a webserver, without frames, and without WYSYWIG tools like Dreamweaver... how do you avoid copy-and-pasting the HTML of your navigation (for example) on every single page you're writing?   I am reviving/reorganising my personal WordPress blog. It's using a URL that looks like this: http://mydomain.com/blog The webserver 301 redirects www.mydomain.com to mydomain.com. I want to use the blog subdirectory because I plan to add other parts to the site, with the blog only being one part of the site. However, at the moment there is nothing there but the blog, so I want to have the root index page redirect to the blog for the time being. I have been using this on the root index.html page to do the redirect... <meta http-equiv="REFRESH" content="0;url=./blog"></HEAD> ...but this seemed to have stopped the site being indexed by Google and Bing. How do I do this without affecting SEO? Also, what URL should I put in the sitemap.xml?

• IIS and content caching

  I'm a web developer and administer of a Windows 2008R2 Could Instance with IIS 7. I recently made an update to our website, but when I revisited the website, the website was being viewed with old stylings. I did a refresh (shift + reload button in Firefox) and of course the website displayed as it should. I didn't worry about it, until my client had the same issue in Safari. So, my question, in general, is, how do I prevent this from happening again, and yet still afford some caching of our site? I noticed we did not have content expiration set up on our webserver sites, so I've set that up, but did I really need to? I've also looked at Etags, and, honestly, it's hard for me to know whether or not I should use them or not. One comment I read somewhere there isn't really any issue with Etags scenarios in IIS (even in webfarms)... but, I dunno. Anybody have any suggestions, links, info? Thanks.

But when I use apache-ab to do a test, ab always show errors like this: ab -n 1 -c 1 http://127.0.0.1:1080/ apr_socket_recv: Connection reset by peer (104) I thought that I'm closing the socket too quickly, so I commented the close() function. But ab just hold, ab seems to be waiting for a complete response.
