• How to bypass firewall to connect to a proxy server?

  I am conducting a small experiment on my office network. I have setup a proxy server on my desktop machine (connected to my LAN) and I have volunteers access the internet via my proxy server. Everything is working well. The problem is people cannot connect to the proxy server through their laptops. I asked my network admin and he said the wireless network has a firewall which prevents users from connecting to my proxy. He said I could tunnel the traffic or use SSH though. I am afraid I do not understand fully what is going on. Is there a way by which users connected on the wireless network can connect to my desktop? I am using FreeProxy on Windows as my proxy server: http://www.handcraftedsoftware.org/index.php?page=download FreeProxy allows me to create a SOCKS 4/4a/5 proxy. Is that what I need? Part of the experiment involves logging the URL requests of the users. I am doing a measurement study. So, any solution must allow me to log the URL requests of users. Also, what changes do I need to make in the browser configuration.

• How can I set up a 404 error page when people access http://ftp.mydomain.com?

  I am a freelance videographer/developer, and part of my job involves transferring large files over FTP to production houses/television stations. While the majority of people in my industry understand the difference between FTP and HTTP, I've experienced several interactions in the past couple months of people who still open Internet Explorer and try to access http://ftp.mydomain.com, receive an error page served by HostGator, and tell me that they cannot access my FTP server. Instead of spending time delivering instructions via e-mail, I'd much prefer to serve up a custom error page in this instance that instructs them how to download and use an FTP client. I tried setting up a sub-domain in Cpanel hoping I could simply drop in an .htaccess file with the error page, but I got this error: ftp.mydomain.com domainadmin-domainexistsglobal I also tried creating a custom error page in PHP which reads the site URL and serves up the custom content only when http://ftp.mydomain.com is accessed. Unfortunately, the error page works for every subdomain except that one. I'm not entirely sure this is even technically possible, which is why I bring it to the good people of StackOverflow to help. • Why won't Google Chrome install on my Windows 7?

  I can tell something is wrong with my computer. A little history: Google Chrome was not running correctly. When i was using facebook, any link on face that ran an ajax javascript function would not work. No error was being thrown, it just wasn't working. I uninstalled Chrome and reinstalled it. On re-install, a toolbar automatically installed with Chrome. BitTorrentBar. I did not install BitTorrentBar, it installed on it's own. Bad. When BitTorrentBar was active, then ajax functions on facebook worked. When I deactivated or uninstalled BittorrentBar from Chrome extensions, then ajax stopped working. I ran scanned the computer with Avast (free version) and SpyBot Search and Destroy (also free). They found nothing wrong. I uninstalled Chrome using Control Panel and then I went through my file system deleting anything that had "google", "BitTorrent", "chrome", or "conduit". Conduit seems to distribute BitTorrentBar. After doing all that, I tried to reinstall Chrome. I got this error: System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: The system cannot find the file specified at System.Diagnostics.Process.StartWithShellExecuteEx(ProcessStartInfo startInfo) at System.Diagnostics.Process.Start() at System.Diagnostics.Process.Start(ProcessStartInfo startInfo) at ClickOnceBootStrap.ClickOnceEntry.Main() This error interupts the Chrome install every time! computer scans don't show anything wrong. So then, I thought this might be a .net framework error. Perhaps I deleted something I wasn't supposed to. So I reinstalled .NET Framework 4 and checked the repair option. I also ran Windows Updates. When I tried to download Chrome, again I got the same error as listed above. What should I do?

• What do I need in order to extract and combine text files from multiple ZIP files, via command line?

  I've got an interesting scripting challenge in front of me. I'm fairly certain there's a way to do it, but I feel like I'm probably lacking some particular tools and/or functional knowledge. There's some fifty-plus ZIP files that each contain, among other things, text files that need to be merged with one another. The structure is something like this: C:\Reports\FirstJob-1.zip |-MyName |-FirstJob |-1 |-[Some other folders] |-TXTReports |-English |-[Some other files] |-Report.txt C:\Reports\FirstJob-2.zip |-MyName |-FirstJob |-1 |-[Some other folders] |-TXTReports |-English |-[Some other files] |-Report.txt C:\Reports\SecondJob-1.zip |-MyName |-SecondJob |-1 |-[Some other folders] |-TXTReports |-English |-[Some other files] |-Report.txt If I had all the Report.txt files in one regular folder, and uniquely named, I could probably just write a FOR statement that targets *.txt and runs something like type filename.txt >> Consolidated.txt on each. However, these all have the same file name and are embedded deep within separate ZIP files. The potentially useful tools I currently have at my disposal are Windows XP Professional SP3, PowerShell, and WinZip. I'd rather not download or install anything else, but I do understand that third-party tools (or additional tools from Microsoft or WinZip) may be necessary. Whatever tools I use should run natively in Windows. I really don't want to have to mess with Cygwin or other emulators on this system. At the very least, I need a tool that will allow me to analyze and manipulate ZIP files from the command line. Also, are there any other particular complications to this that I've not yet thought of?

• Slow upload speeds with pfsense virtual appliance

  I have a pfSense virtual appliance set up in front of a Windows server. The pfSense appliance has been configured with two L2L IPSec VPN sites and not too much else. The appliance has two vNics which both exist on the same VLAN, but one is "WAN" and the other is "LAN." When I run speedtest.net on my Windows server when I have configured it to use a static WAN address and gateway, I get great speeds - maybe around 50 down, 15 up. However, when I configure it with a private IP address, I get similar download speeds but terrible upload speeds - around 2 or 3 Mbps consistently. I used Wireshark to see what gives but there didn't appear to be too much helpful information there, or I just could not find it. Besides the L2L VPNs, other configurations include: Automatic Outbound NAT Virtual P-ARP IP for the Windows Server WAN Firewall rule to allow * to * on RDP WAN Firewall rule to allow * to * (enabled this just for testing... didn't help!) No DHCP or any other services besides IPSec VPN No Errors LAN or WAN No collisions LAN or WAN I would be happy to post the full config file if it would help. I've been scratching my head at this one all day!

• Finding a backup and synchronization solution

  I'm having difficulties to find a backup and synchronization solution with the following characteristics: Cross-platform: Windows, Linux, Mac Offsite backup (so Internet Backup) Data deduplication Transfer only new/modified bits of modified files Secure: Data encrypted before leaving computer Maintain multiple versions of files (even deleted files) Folder synchronization integrated with backup and across multiple computers connected to the internet (not necessarily in the same LAN) I think that the Folder Sync feature needs a better explanation. The use case is this: you have a desktop pc and a laptop. The desktop pc contains a folder with some files and this folder is part of the backup (so it was selected to be backed up). The laptop does not contain that folder or that files at all. Then you're abroad with your laptop and you need that folder. So you want to be able to open the backup program, select that folder from the backup and download it in your laptop mantaining it synchronized with the backed up version. When you then come back home and switch on your desktop pc you want the folder we're talking about to be updated in the desktop PC. Does anyone knows any service with all these features? I've only found SpiderOak to support all the features I've mentioned but I'm not completely satisfied by the time taken to complete a backup. Sometimes it seems to hang for minutes with no reasons at all and folder synchronization occurs only after all files are backed up (instead folder sync should have a separated queue independent from other backup operations and synchronization should occurs frequently... for example every 5 minutes or less, independently from the frequency of normal backup operations)

  I am on Ubuntu, Apache 2.2 Installed the fcgi via apt-get then removed it via apt-get remove. Installed mod-ruby configuration I added to Apache: LoadModule ruby_module /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_ruby.so RubyRequire apache/ruby-run <Directory /var/www> Options +ExecCGI </Directory> <Files *.rb> SetHandler ruby-object RubyHandler Apache::RubyRun.instance </Files> <Files *.rbx> SetHandler ruby-object RubyHandler Apache::RubyRun.instance </Files> I have a file in the www direcoty with puts 'baba' I have other files in that directory, all accessible via Apache. Test file has been chmod 777 In the browser I get 403. • How to connect to local instance of SQL Server 2008 Express

  I just installed SQL Server 2008 Express on my windows 7 machine. I previously had 2005 on here and used it just fine with the old SQL Server Management Studio Express. I was able to connect with no problems to my PC-NAME\SQLEXPRESS instance. I uninstalled 2005 and SQL Server Management Studio Express. I then installed SQL Server 2008 Express on my machine and elected to have it install SQL Server Management Studio. Now, when I try to connect to PC-NAME\SQLEXPRESS (with Windows Authentication, like I always did), I get the following message: Cannot connect to PC-NAME\SQLEXPRESS. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1) For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=-1&LinkId=20476 When I went to the help link it mentions, the help page suggests the following: * Make sure that the SQL Server Browser service is started on the server. * Use the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration tool to enable SQL Server to accept remote connections. I did try starting the SQL Server Browser, but don't see that the Surface Area Configuration is installed with this express version. I had seen another user with an almost exact same issue that was missing the database engine on install. If that were the case how could i test for that and where would i go to download that install. • Upgrading from SQL2000 database to SQL Express 2008 R2

  Hi, We have a web application which uses a MSSQL 2000 backend database. We are currently paying a ridiculous amount for Shared Hosting, with the database costs alone costing us $150 per month (MSSQL 100mb extra space is $40 per month). Our database size is 896.38 MB I am looking at getting a Virtual Private Server and upgrading the database to a MSSQL2008 Express database. I am aware that the Express version is limited to a 10GB database (with R2), and is constrained to a single CPU. I have also been offered SQL Server 2008 Web Edition for $19/per month, but I cannot find many details on the difference between Express and Web. Any suggestions here? What I would also like to know is: If we upgrade the database to MSSQL 2008 database, is there any issues with possible data transformations in the future? I.e. Is it possible to download and mount it with SQL Server 2008 Standard edition? I'm more concerned about how to get data in and out of the database through SQL Management tools.   Hello, I have atheros wifi hardware, intell chipset, gigabyte laptop and CentOS 5 installed. Now I try to use wireless network and get problems. First of all I want to say that I have 2 OS on my laptop, and when I load Windows XP I still may to access to the wireless network. First I try to get it on Linux was to make active wlan0 interface in: system - administration - network but I get: Determining IP information for wlan0... failed. • 1000Base-X layer 2/MAC address details

  A layer 2 Ethernet frame is sent with a source and destination MAC address. Given a 100Base-TX (copper) trunk between two Cisco switches, I can do a "show interface fa 0/0" on S1 to see the MAC address assigned to the trunking interface, then go to Switch2 and do a "show mac address-table" and find the MAC address of the S1 fa 0/0 interface as a dynamically learned MAC in the table. Given a similar setup with a 1000Base-X (fiber GBIC) trunk, the MAC address shown in "show interface gi 0/0" on S1 does not show up in the MAC address-table of S2. Everything I can find online indicates that 1000Base-X uses largely the same layer 2 format as copper connections. There's some slight alterations - minimum frame size is slightly larger - but the fundamentals of the frame structure appear to be the same, including transmission with a source and destination L2 address. Why doesn't the address of gi 0/0 show up in the MAC address table of the connection switch? The only thing which seems to make sense would be that the GBIC has its own MAC address, almost as if its acting as a mini 2-port switch or hub, with the switch-assigned MAC address showing up on the interface connection and a different MAC address assigned to the fiber side. If this is the case, is there any way to see the GBIC MAC address on the switch? (I've tried to look up the details in IEEE 802.3z but it doesn't seem to be available without an IEEE membership or purchasing the standard. I find the base 802.3 PDFs for download, but not 802.3z.)

• Setting up Squid -> VPN connection

  I recently purchased a VPS and am wanting to use it as a VPN server. However, it has bandwidth limitations. So, I figured since I already have a local Squid proxy caching things for me, I could have users connect to the proxy and the proxy connect to the VPN. Then when someone hits the web, Squid will serve it from cache if available and, if not, it will use the VPN to download it. My issue is, I have no idea how to set this up :p - Essentially I want Machine - Squid - VPN. My VPN is running on Ubuntu Server with pptpd. Squid is running on a local Arch Linux box. Squid and the VPN are both working perfectly independently. Any help on how to have Squid push traffic through the VPN would be greatly appreciated! Also: I don't actually want to use the VPN for all traffic. Otherwise, I'd just connect my router to the VPN and be happy. I only want to use it for web traffic from specific machines on the network.

• what's the difference between a Volume and a Partition in Windows 7 diskpart

  I was trying to follow the Intel guide for setting up iRST (Intel Rapid Start Technology) on my new laptop. The Intel manual says you need to create a *Volume that is as big or bigger than your available memory, set it to a specific id (id=84), then go into the iRST tool and adjust some settings. Looking at the disk manager on the laptop, I see there is already a Partition labeled as "Hibernation Partition" which is a little bigger than the memory in my system. So it looks like iRST was already set up...BUT, it's a Partition, not a Volume. Here's what the manual says to do: (from: http://download.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/rapid_start_technology_user_guide.pdf) diskpart list disk select disk x (where x is the disk to use, there's only one disk in this laptop) create partition primary size=X000 (where X000 is the size to create) detail disk (which lists details for the disk. This is where i get hung up) select volume Z (where Z is the *partition you created previously) ** it says the 'detail disk' command will list the volume #, but it doesn't. ** 'detail disk' only lists two "volumes" for Recovery and OS. ** if i do 'list partition', i see the 8 GB *partition labeled as "Hibernation Partition") ** so I can't continue with the following steps: set id=84 override exit The reason I went looking for the manual is because when iRST is enabled in the BIOS, the system won't resume from sleep. When it's disabled, it works fine, but the system goes into (legacy?) Hibernation mode and takes a while to come out of Hibernation. the iRST is supposed to resume from deep sleep very quickly. So, what's the difference between a Volume and a Partition? Should I delete the Hibernation Partition and create a Hibernation Volume? Anyone have any ideas? (if it matters, this is on a Dell XPS 13 with BIOS A08) Thanks! J

• "Run As Administrator" on program right click failing and not launching program

  This problem lies within a relatively fresh x64 Windows 7 install ~4 weeks, but is also a problem I have seen on Windows Vista machines (x86 versions). Since the other day, any programs attempted to be launched via right clicking on a shortcut (.lnk)'s context menu and pressing - "Run As Administrator" for instance, in the Quick Launch/Jump List in Windows 7 has failed, screen has not dimmed, no UAC popup. In fact the program does not even load. There is no way around this unless I use the shortcut version from "All Programs" which appears to work, very strange? I have performed no major software installs, nothing out of the ordinary. Has anybody encountered this or know what would be causing it? • Network Traffic Log

  Background - On my "home" network I have a Linksys WTR45GL router providing my internet access as well as a wireless AP. Connected I have * 2 Windows PCs (wired) * At least one laptop (Wired) * Some 802.11 enabled handheld consoles (PSPs) * A Nintendo Wii * Some windows XP pcs used by the people in the granny flat. Where I live, South Africa, well, 1Gb worth of monthly cap is, while not expensive, costly enough that I'd like to be sure that all the bandwidth used by devices on my network is ... well ... legitimate and not the result of neighbors parasiting my wireless, malware or just the result of "liberal" download policies in my software. I got the Linksys WRT45GL on the understanding that there were custom firmwares (DD-WRT and Tomato) that allowed bandwidth tracking, but there doesn't seem to be any facility to get a log of traffic that can be examined to see (a) which local devices were the biggest consumers of bandwidth and (b) what they were connected to. What tools are there for logging traffic such that, when it gets to that OMG moment in the month when all my bandwidth is gone, I have a chance to find out what the hell used it all up (and hopefully attempt some corrective action).

• snort analysis of wireshark capture

  I'm trying to identify trouble users on our network. ntop identifies high traffic and high connection users, but malware doesn't always need high bandwidth to really mess things up. So I am trying to do offline analysis with snort (don't want to burden the router with inline analysis of 20 Mbps traffic). Apparently snort provides a -r option for this purpose, but I can't get the analysis to run. The analysis system is gentoo, amd64, in case that makes any difference. I've already used oinkmaster to download the latest IDS signatures. • Getting a TTY in a Connectback Shell

  I'm often asked by friends to help with small Linux problems, and more often than not I'm required to login to the remote system. Usually there are a lot of issues with making an account and logging in (sometimes the box is behind a NAT device, sometimes SSHD isn't installed, etc.) so I usually just ask them to make a connect-back shell using netcat (nc -e /bin/bash ). If they don't have netcat I can just ask them to grab a copy of a statically compiled binary which isn't that hard or time consuming to download and run. Though this works well enough for me to enter simple commands, I can't run any apps that require a tty (vi, for example) and can't use any job control functions. I managed to bypass this issue by running in.telnetd with a few arguments within the connect-back shell that would assign me a terminal and drop me to a shell. Unfortunately in.telnetd isn't usually installed by default on most systems. What's the easiest way to get a fully functional connect-back terminal shell without requiring any non-standard packages? (A small C program that does the job would be fine as well, I just can't seem to find much documentation on how a TTY is assigned/allocated. A solution that doesn't require me to plough through the source code for SSHD and TELNETD would be nice :))

• Cannot establish a network connect to VMWare Fusion VM

  I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 (not the server edition) with VMWare Fusion 3.0.0 and I trying to get my Ubuntu 9.10 x86_64 VM working. I am using a bridged connection, and I have an internet connection FROM the Ubuntu VM (I can download updates, ping websites, etc), but I cannot connect TO the Ubuntu box from any other device on my network. I am trying to get Mongrel up on the Ubuntu VM for some Rails stuff, but it's not working. I know Mongrel/Rails is not the problem because if I start the server on the Ubuntu VM, background the process, and then wget the index page, it works. I just cannot connect to the site from another IP. I have tried using a static IP and a DHCP IP configuration on the Ubuntu VM, neither work (for incoming connections, both work for outwards). I have port scanned the Ubuntu VM, and it appears that all ports are closed. However, the Ubuntu VM does respond to pings. I noticed a similar question here: http://serverfault.com/questions/99757/setting-up-a-bridged-network-with-vmware-fusion, but no answer. Any ideas?

• How do I switch java versions to an earlier version in Fedora 17?

  I just installed Fedora 17. I'm setting up the Android Build Environment and need Java. I downloaded and installed jdk-6u32-linux-amd64.rpm I ran java -version and it spit out the correct version. Well a day or two later i tried my first compile in Fedora 17 and it complained about java and failed. I ran java -version again and low and behold it spits out $ java -version java version "1.7.0_03-icedtea" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (fedora-2.1.fc17.7-x86_64) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 22.0-b10, mixed mode) I'm stumped. I mean, i've run the update/upgrade commands since i installed but i didn't think that updated full version revisions... So, I ran alternatives --config java and that only gave me the java 1.7 version. While digging around more I discovered that the recommended version of Java for the build environment is jdk-6u27-linux-x64-rpm.bin so I downloaded that from here: Oracle Download When I ran: sudo sh jdk-6u27-linux-x64-rpm.bin it returned: Unpacking... Also is this free software or does it require a separate licence? It sounds like it would be a useful tool for diagnosing Mac problems. The Apple Service Diagnostic application is designed to run both EFI and Mac OS X tests from an external USB hard drive. Apple Service Diagnostic (EFI) runs low-level tests of the hardware directly and does not require Mac OS X, while Apple Service Diagnostic (OS) uses Mac OS X to run tests. Booting and Using the Apple Service Diagnostic Application - Before using Apple Service Diagnostic, disconnect any Ethernet network, USB, and audio cables. - With the USB hard drive containing ASD 3S123 plugged into a USB port, restart the computer and hold down the option key as the computer boots up into the Startup Manager. To run ASD (EFI) select the "ASD EFI 3S123" drive icon and press return or select it with a mouse click. To run ASD (OS) select the "ASD OS 3S123" drive icon and press return or select it with a mouse click. ASD (EFI) will load in 20-30 seconds; ASD (OS) will load in 2-3 minutes. - After running ASD (OS) or ASD (EFI), press the Restart button to restart the computer back into the normal startup volume, or hold down the option key to get back to the Startup Manager. • Large mailbox in Outlook 2007 takes ages to index

  In our company each user has a single mailbox and all email they have ever sent/received is in that mailbox. We don't do archiving to PST and we thought that was the way forward. The problem we now have is if someone switches to another PC for the day and opens Outlook, it has to download all emails first to that PC (cached mode) but even then when they try to search for something, Outlook says items are still being indexed. One user has over 100,000 items to be indexed and it's been saying that for about a week! As a temporary workaround I have turned off instant searching which allows them to search for anything, but it takes time to filter through, and Outlook doesn't exactly indicate if it's still searching for something, so in most cases the user thinks the search isn't working when really it is and it's just taking time to populate the results. I need a solution that allows the mailbox to be indexed really quickly if the user has to login to another PC. Are we best using Online Mode instead of Cached Mode or is there another way around this? Thanks in advance.

• Mysql Cluster not working on Ubuntu

  I am unable to setup MySQL Cluster on ubuntu servers. As a starting point I started from the link but I am not successful and the tar ball version I download is 6.3.45. As I wanted to test the mysql cluster, the Data node and SQL node are same but sql never appeared as connected in management node console and it looks like below. [ndbd(NDB)] 2 node(s) id=2 @192.168.1.107 (Version: version number, Nodegroup: 0, Master) id=3 @192.168.1.108 (Version: version number, Nodegroup: 0) [ndb_mgmd(MGM)] 1 node(s) id=1 @192.168.1.105 (Version: version number) [mysqld(API)] 2 node(s) id=4 (not connected, accepting connect from 192.168.1.107) id=5 (not connected, accepting connect from 192.168.1.108) On all the 3 machines mysql-server & client(apt-get install mysql-server mysql-client) were already installed and I completely stopped and also removed them at the system start up. Now the mysqld is from extracted cluster tar ball(/usr/local/mysql/support-files/mysql.server). As for testing, I created a test database on both the data nodes but the tables are also not syncing on other node. I checked many links, configurations are remained similar in all the links but somewhere it's going wrong. Anymore extra package is required?, Could anyone help me here..?. I am trying this for past 3 days... Thank you!

  I've started using Windows 7 under VirtualBox on an Ubuntu 10.10 host. I took about 6 snapshots over the course of setting up the VM from the Windows restore image that came with the computer. My installations were more or less limited to windows updates, antivirus, and the VB Guest Additions. I uninstalled much more than I installed. The VM was running for about 24 hours total. The snapshots increased in size at a worrisome rate, even when the machine was idle: the snapshot .vdi file for the period between 11:22 PM and 9:02 AM is 6 gigs in size; during that time very little happened. The other .vdi files are between 0.5 and 3 GB, most between 1 and 2 GB. The corresponding .sav files are between 0.5 and 1 GB. The Internet connection where I was doing this is limited to 30KB/s download, which, constantly saturated, works out to less than 3 GB per 24 hour period. Is this normal? Is there something that can be done to make snapshots more practical? update On starting up the VM again, I've noticed that mscorsvw is using significant processing time. Apparently this process [precompiles .NET assemblies]. This may have been going on during the period when I was taking snapshots, which might explain some of the snapshot size increase. I would be somewhat surprised to learn that this could be responsible for over 10 GB of additional disk usage, or that it would run for roughly 24 hours. Is this possible?
