• What should I be doing while I wait for a progress bar?

  So I am sitting here waiting for a progress bar to run (20 mins or so), and was wondering how best to use my time as a SysAdmin. I debated not posting this question briefly, as this could get flagged as subjective, but I think it's an important question, and a question that can be legitimately answered (per the FAQ) I know this something a lot of sys admins deal with, especially if they are client-based I would venture to guess. There is a lot of material out there about how to multi task, but SysAdmin work is unique in this area as well. I could switch over to another project, but I could get wrapped up in that, and forget about the original project I was working on, and that's hard if you are billing a client for your time, both for tracking your time, as well as being fair to that client. I could check ServerFault, but that isn't directly work related, I could sort my email, so on and so forth. What do you do, or what should I do when I have time waiting for a progress bar? Thanks! • Windows 2003 R2 zip program blocking EXE file

  I have a Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition SP2 32-bit machine with all latest patch (as of 1-6-2011). It's a VM. I have a zip file, including a pdf file, a txt file and a exe file. If I copy the zip file onto the machine via a shared network drive, I can unzip all the files properly without problems. If I put the zip file on my web server and then I download it from there, I can only unzip the pdf file and txt file. The exe file is silently ignored. I searched the web and found somebody reporting similar issue on XP. If I right click on the zip file downloaded from the web server, at the bottom of the general page, it has a warning message saying that "This file came from antoher computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer" I understand that I can solve the problem by simply clicking the "Unblock" button and extract the file again. The things that bothering me is that why the warning message says "might be blocked"? I tried downloading the same zip file from the same web server on to my Windows 7 box with latest patch. It also shows the same warning message. However, even with the warning message, I can extract all the files properly without clicking the "Unblock" button. Is it a bug in Windows 2003 R2 SP1? Is there any security settings controlling this? How likely will the end user seeing this problem? I want to dig into this because I am worrying people downloading my zip file from my web server might see similar problems. The first thought coming to the user's mind will be the zip file is somehow corrupted. Honestly, I didn't know this "Unblock" feature in Windows before I run into this problem. EDIT I just tried it on another Windows 2003 R2 SP1 machine. The zip program doesn't block the EXE file on that machine either. Both Windows 2003 R2 SP1 machines are joining to the same forest.

• Any Recommendations for a Web Based Large File Transfer System?

  I'm looking for a server software product that: Allows my users to share large files with: The general public securely to 1 or more people (notification via email, optionally with a token that gives them x period of time to download) Allows anyone in the general public to share files with my users. Perhaps by invitation. Has to be user friendly enough to allow my users to use this with out having to bug me as the admin. It needs to be a system that we can install on our own server (we don't want shared data sitting on anyone else's server) A web based solution. Using some kind or secure comms channel would be good too, eg, ssh Files to share could be over 1 GB. I found the question below. There are too many services that provide this, but I want something we can install on our own server. A last resort would be to roll my own. Any ideas appreciated. Glen EDIT Sorry Tom and Jeff but Glen specifically says that he's looking for a 'product' so given that I specialise in this field thought that my expertise in this area may have been of use to him. I don't see how him writing services is going to be easy for him to maintain going forward (large IT admin overhead) or simple for his users and the general public to work with.

• NVIDIA GeForce GT750M drivers for Ubuntu 13.10 on iMac

  I have just got a new iMac 14.3 with 21.5' display. It has Intel i7 processor and NVIDIA GeForce GT750M graphics card with GPU (Device ID: 0x00fe9). I have installed Ubuntu 13.10 on it (dual boot with refit). Everything works fine apart from graphics. It is clear that graphics' not accelerated, and there are no drivers suggested in the "Additional drivers" section. I have tried to Install nvidia drivers from the repository. Download nvidia drivers and install them manually. Follow instructions here. Follow instructions here. Follow instructions here. Install bumblebee. Play around with xorg.conf file. Blacklist nouveau. As you may guess, nothing worked. The weirdest thing is, that when I boot from a LiveCD, it picks up screen resolution and all the rest correctly, though when I install the system to my Hard Drive it clearly does not have proper drivers. Does anyone have any suggestion what to do?

• Digitize video?

  I got some movies on a VCR that i want to move to my computer somehow. (for personal use) I have a video capture card and all hardware required. I'm looking for the software - programs, codecs etc. I like the format that most torrents come in and got some of these i'd like to use as reference for comparison. How can i see what codec, bitrate, etc a movie is using so i can pick this and know that it will work and look good. For AVI-files the bitrate is visible in explorer but it doesn't mention the codec used and i also have a lot of MKV-files that explorer can't handle. All kinds of tips, tricks and other suggestions are welcome. This is completely new to me. How do I avoid that video/audio gets out of sync for example, many movies you download have audio out of sync so i guess this can happen quite easily. The encoding-program has to run on windows and for playback the movies should work on at least VLC for windows.

I've tried deleting their profile and setting it up again, repairing office, uninstalling completely and then reinstalling, and swapping out memory sticks. • HAproxy with MySQL Master-Master Replication incredibly slow

  I have two MySQL servers in multi-master mode, with an HAproxy machine for simple load balancing/redundancy. When I am connected to one of the servers directly and try to update about 100,000 entries, it is completed including replication in about half a minute. When connecting through the proxy it takes usually over three whole minutes. Is it normal to have that type of latency? Is something amiss with my proxy configuration (included below)? • Wireless to Wireless Transfer Slow on a Linksys WRT54GL

  The Situation: When I try to transfer a file from one computer to another that are both connected via wireless on a WRT54GL (in a office) with dd-wrt firmware I often get bad speeds. In generally they average around 100 kilobytes a second. Either computer can download via wireless from the Internet at at about 2 megabytes a second. The speed is slow with the transfer of one large file. There are about 20 other wireless networks that the computers can see, so there is a lot of noise, but I don't have the equipment to really monitor the frequencies well. But that still seems pretty slow. I thought maybe it was the transmit on each card, but even when they are 5 feet away with a line of sight I still get these speeds. According to Linux both cards are operating at 54g. My Questions: Is this normal for this sort of consumer level wireless equipment? Anything I can do to improve it? why is wireless to wireless transfer slow when everything else isn't? Whats steps might I take to figure out what is happening? For example, are lots of packets not making to the access point requiring retransmissions? Above all, I want to find out what the problem actually is. This may seem odd, but at this point I am more interested in understanding what the problem is than fixing it. What I have tried: I have tried messing with lots of settings. Different channels, xmit power, G-Only, none of which has made anything any better. I've also tried upgrading to newer dd-wrt firmware version and doing a reset to wipe out the settings.

• Do you known a reputable backup software that can capture ONLY file system structure + attributes, WITHOUT file content

  Is there, on Windows, a reputable backup software out there capable of capturing ONLY a file system's directory and file structure, along with each item's attributes, WITHOUT capturing the actual file content (all files should be zero-length in the backup). I thoroughly searched the web for a solution and wasn't able to find one. Scenario when this would be very useful: I have a large drive with a huge amount of files. If the drive dies, I don't care so much about the content in these files (I can always download this content again from the Internet at any time) but I do care HUGELY about the names of the files that were on it, possibly also about their MD5 hashes and other classic file attributes (especially created-date / modified-date). The functionality I need is present to an extent in "media"/file cataloging software (i.e. whereisit) and, to a lesser extent, in a Total Commander set of extensions (DiskDir, DiskDirExtended). The huge drawback with cataloging software is that it's not designed to store previous versions of each item (AFAIK) and, most importantly, it has very weak content backup capabilities. I managed to think of a hack but I hope there's some backup software out there that already has this capability and I just failed to find it, thus this question. The hack: RoboCopy could be used with /CREATE (CREATE directory tree and zero-length files only) or /COPY (what to COPY for files) without the D=Data flag, to clone a directory structure into one where all files are zero-length but have the desired attributes. Then I would backup the cloned directory structure with a reputable backup software. I would really love to avoid a hack like this one, if possible. Thanks, Bogdan

• File permissions question

  I just switched my site's server from Windows to Linux, and am finally able to control file permissions from my ftp. So, seeing that all permissions were 705 by default (and not wanting just anyone to have permission to execute), I went and changed everything to 744. Now, gif and jpg links don't work, pdf download links don't work, php links don't load, and mov files don't play. Conversely, all html files work perfectly. Setting things back doesn't seem to help. Even setting to 777 gets me nowhere. Any ideas on what might be going wrong? I've been googling file permissions all day (solved that problem with the Windows-Linux switch, which has bred a new problem), and I don't think anything I can find has escaped my attention. • Excel Help: Data Input Help

  Everyday I download data from a site that will have rows each filled with individual data for clients. I'm able to input the data into excel as a whole but after that I'm having trouble figuring out how to put it into a chart. For example Web visits time. So say Client 1 stayed for 5 min increasing his total time on the site to 20 min and Client 2 stayed for 0 min keeping his time of 10 min and they were both registered on new years eve, and R1's last login was today and R2's was yesterday. (R for some reason repersents Client, no idea why...). Client 3 hasn't been on since he registered keeping his total at 4 min So my data would look something like this for Today (20110104) R1,20101231,20110104,20 R2,20101231,20110103,10 R3,20101231,20101231,4 And this for the day before (201101030), R1,20101231,20110102,15 R2,20101231,20110103,10 R3,20101231,20101231,4 I get about 200+ client rows each day where even the names of the Client list are changing. Is it possible to import the data each day and fill it in a excel sheet where the Client number is off on the left hand side in a table, and the amount of time (Whole Number ex. 4) each day it spends on the site extend to the right under it's specific date see Picture? I've manage to create a manual sheet but have been unsucessful at getting excel to do any of it for me. Here are two pictures:

• FTP FileWatcher

  So, I am in this little predicament where I am stuck watching a few ftp folders to see if they have new files added to them. If they do, it needs to throw an event with the file name. Thereby telling something else to download that file. This is a pretty simple object to make, I was just curious if anyone knew how expensive this operation would be? I plan on using the command NLIST because I don't need file size information, and there will be no sub-directories in the folder. Each file in the folder will have exactly 25 characters in its name. There could be anywhere from 10 to 'maybe' a couple thousand (max around 2000) files per folder (usually on the lower end, 100-300, but currently growing). The files are anywhere from 250kb to a very VERY unlikely 10mb (usually within the 250kb to 4mb range). There possibly could be up to a few hundred folders (in which case I could change the watch frequency depending on number of folders), but currently there are only a few (6-10ish). There also would be multiple logins for the ftp server, different logins would have access to different folders. I am not asking for an implementation, just if anyone has some first or second hand knowledge about FTP, how could this affect my network. I am not opposed to putting in file retention times or change the frequency in which I check for new files.

• Eee PC Seashell series netbook screen is cut off at bottom no matter the resolution

  I have an Eee PC 1015PE Seashell netbook running Windows 7 Home Premium with an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 (8.14.10.2230) with a "Generic Non-PnP Monitor" detected. I tried: Changing the resolution (Control Panel = Appearance and Personalization = Display = Screen Resolution) to 1024x768 Updating the video driver (to 8.14.10.2230) Uninstalling the driver and rebooting Pressing the Windows Key + "-" (magnifier) Pressing Ctrl + Mouse Scroll only resizes the desktop items Pressing Fn + F4 shows 1024x600 (which I think is what I should be using, but nothing happens) EDIT: Changed from Landscape to Portrait and it works Attached an External Monitor and when I extend or set as desktop it works only on the External Monitor (shows up as "Generic PnP Monitor in Device Manager) Basically the bottom inch of my desktop is off-screen hiding my start bar, but my wigets are in their proper position (the start bar is not hidden). Pressing Ctrl + Esc shows the start menu but its cut-off. I'm pretty sure I should be using 1024x600 resolution, any advice? What's odd is that this only started happening recently. • How to get german QWERTY on Windows?

  Well I'm used to having the world standard keyboard which is qwerty and not qwertz... But on windows I can't find the choice for german input which would be qwerty, not qwertz. In linux there was german input with qwerty so it was fun. I believe it should be on Windows too? Cause i'm sick of this qwertz always having to correct and search for z or y... Yeah, I know, if Germans made a mistake, it wasn't loosing WW2... Edit: Maybe I wasn't clear enough, it's not about changing between different language inputs? It's about having all german keys in german input, just the z and y would be in the correct places like all the worlds keyboards use and like the US keyboard uses... Solution: Well unfortunately by searching everywhere and waiting for answers I couldn't find what I needed, so I came up with this solution - I used The The Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator And created my own very custom layout by modifying the default german layout and switching places of z and y. After a minute, the installer says there's a problem and directs me to Prerequisites for installing Internet Explorer 9 Beta I click on the x86 installers one by one... most say "already installed".. • USPTO site asks for Quicktime Plug-in which I already have installed. Why?

  Whenever I try to watch the images of a patent in the USPTO site (example) using Firefox, the browser asks me to download the latest Quicktime, manually. This is totally strange because I already HAVE the latest plug-in (it even appears on my Firefox add-ons list). In the past I have only been able to see patent images using Safari. But never with Firefox. Is it a USPTO problem or a Mozilla one? Is there a way to fix the problem? edit: I can't see TIFF images neither with Internet Explorer (both 32-bit and 64-bit versions) nor with Chrome. All these browsers don't know how to open embedded TIFF images because they don't recognize the installed Quicktime plugin. A USPTO conspiracy to promote Safari? Come to think of it, I had this problem in my old computer as well. It had a 32-bit Vista OS, now I have 64-bit Windows 7. I hate TIFF and can't find Mozilla-specific information anywhere.. Arghh, am I the only one here with this freak problem?!

• wget is working only when used with sudo

  I'm having quite a strange behavior with wget since yesterday. • Apache is running the wrong version of PHP.

  I am trying to enable CURL in php, and possibly update php as well. I have run into a road block where Apache seems to be running the wrong version of PHP. Here is some evidence. #lsof | grep php httpd 18397 nobody 135w REG 8,3 242 528537 /usr/local/apache/modules/libphp5.so I download the latest php 5.2.13 and build from source. I run a service httpd stop, do a make install and then I manually overwrite /usr/local/apache/modules/libphp5.so just to be safe. Using ldd i can see that its my fresh binary compiled with curl (the old one doesn't have curl.) ldd /usr/local/apache/modules/libphp5.so | grep curl libcurl.so.4 => /usr/local/lib/libcurl.so.4 (0x0064e000) I execute a phpinfo() and 5.2.3 is being executed instated of my new 5.2.13 and "curl" is nowhere to be found. What am I doing wrong? Why is curl disabled even though its statically linked? This is a RHEL 5.5 system.

• Almost every Inkscape extension yields an error in Mac OS X

  I've run the latest few versions of Inkscape (currently landed on "0.47+devel"), and have been having trouble with the Extensions menu. So far, in every version of Inkscape I've tried, nearly every extension yields the following error: The fantastic lxml wrapper for libxml2 is required by inkex.py and therefore this extension. Please download and install the latest version from http://cheeseshop.python.org/pypi/lxml/, or install it through your package manager by a command like: sudo apt-get install python-lxml I've tried the instructions listed there, of course, with no effect. I've also found many references to this issue on fora, in bug trackers, etc., and as such also tried: sudo easy_install lxml cd /Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/lib mv libxml2.2.dylib libxml2.2.dylib.old ln -s /usr/lib/libxml2.dylib and a few similar solutions. Nothing has produced any change in Inkscape's behavior. Does anyone know A) what's really going on here? Because from what I gather the error is not describing the actual problem. And of course B) a simple solution? I need those features! :)

• Adobe e-book reader ("Digital Editions") not downloading on Mac OS X

  i recently bought a couple of books from ebooks.com, which i thought would be ordinary pdf files. After paying for them, and downloading them, you learn that while they are pdf files, they come with a lot of DRM baggage. The most conspicuous is that you can only view these files using an Adobe ebook reader called Adobe Digital Editions. (Note: this is not the ordinary Adobe Acrobat Reader, or anything close--it's a dedicated app for reading DRM-laden files. Fine--i'll know better next time. Still, i paid for these books and there's only one way i can actually read them, which happens to be an App that i seem to be unable to download. Here's the error message i get: "Couldn't write the application to the hard disk. Please verify the hard disk is available and try again" I've tried on several different browsers. My rig is a MBP, OS X 10.6.2. I've also checked the Adobe boards and this doesn't appear to be a known issue, nor could i find anything on their discussion forums. And just to be sure, i've checked my hard disk--no problems, plenty of space, and i have no problem, nor have i ever downloading other apps.

  I'm getting blue screens, mostly when trying to boot a program that required a lot of memory (games, photo editing software.) So far I've only managed to catch one set of error codes: BCCode: 1000008e BCP1: C0000005 BCP2: ADA393BA BCP3: E9BCEBC4 BCP4: 00000000 OS Version: 6_0_6002 Service Pack: 2_0 Product: 768_1 It's on a Sony VAIO Laptop VGN FW-41E, Vista OS service pack 2. Besides these codes it lists two 'temporary' files that were related with this crash: ...AppData\Local\Temp\WER-134925-0.sysdata.xml ...AppData\Local\Temp\WERDA66.tmp.version.txt When I googled these files some site said it was linked to a worm called 'yodo', but virus scans don't return any results (hitman pro, malware bytes, avast antivirus all turn up empty). Upon further searching about this yodo worm, I came across security stronghold where someone posted they had acquired this worm when downloading access and excel templates. Now, I actually did download templates for the same programs, they might have been the same, they may be related or I might be grasping at straws here. I have not noticed any issues other in performance as of late, just BSOD's when I start software that requires some memory, but I never had issues with these exact same programs before. Help and/or hints are required on how to actually figure out what's the root of this BSOD issue and how can I fix it. Do you reckon it's actually a virus? What program should be able to remove YODO worm stuff?

• OpenVPN Server - CPU is pegged out

  Hello, I am configuring OpenVPN to act as a SSL tunnel for a remote location. I have OpenVPN1 at our current location acting as a server then OpenVPN2 at the other location that is acting as a client but is also acting as a DHCP server to machines behind it so they are basically connected to the local LAN. Everything is set up fine and I can talk from location A to location B with no problems like everyone is local. I am however having some performance issues. OpenVPN1 CPU is pegged to 100% the entire time I am copying or doing any type of activity through the tunnel. I expect some CPU usage going up but nothing like this. It's really killing my performance. OpenVPN1 is running in ESX right now with 2 gig RAM and 4 procs with unlimited bursting capacity. I am using AES-192 encryption with a 1024 key. Any idea how I can get my CPU down on OpenVPN1 and my download/upload speeds higher between the tunnel? Thanks. edit: Turning down the logging helped boost the throughput a little bit, but I am still fairly shy of where I believe I should be. Also I am still maxed out on the CPU. Does anyone have any ideas? I am really stuck on this. Thanks.
