Audio Player with Custom Buttons

I am developing a website but require help regarding a simple javascript audio player. Currently, I have four divs set up as the "buttons" : previous song; pause; play; and next song. Pretty much self explanatory, each button serves its obvious function, previous song, pause the song, play the song, and next song. With this in mind, I am also hoping to have the music start playing right after the page completes loading. I understand there are numerous javascript solutions that involve the use of third-party "applications" such as jplayer, however, I am not well learned in javascript and would like to request the aid of the general body in this matter. LOL. that was awkwardly formal. Um, but yes. I am looking for a way to use my four divs as the controllers of a multi-track audio player. Thanks,

How can I view the text file in the android device emulator.( I heard android doesn’t come with Text Editor form stack overflow). NoClassDefFoundError when trying to reference external jar files

I have some 3rd party jar files that I want to reference in my tomcat web application. I added this line to catalina.properties: shared.loader=/home/ollie/dev/java/googleapi_samples/gdata/java/lib/*.jar but I'm still getting this error: org.apache.jasper.JasperException: javax.servlet.ServletException: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/google/gdata/util/ServiceException org.apache.jasper.servlet.JspServletWrapper.handleJspException(JspServletWrapper.java:491) org.apache.jasper.servlet.JspServletWrapper.service(JspServletWrapper.java:401) org.apache.jasper.servlet.JspServlet.serviceJspFile(JspServlet.java:313) org.apache.jasper.servlet.JspServlet.service(JspServlet.java:260) javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet.service(HttpServlet.java:717) I verified that the com.google.gdata.util.ServiceException is in the gdata-core-1.0.jar file which is in the directory: /home/ollie/dev/java/googleapi_samples/gdata/java/lib I did bounce tomcat after I modified catalina.properties. Update 1: I tried copying the gdata-core-1.0.jar file into /var/lib/tomcat6/webapp/examples/WEB-INF/lib as a test but that didn't fix the problem either. Update 2: It actually does work when I copy the jar file directly into the WEB-INF/lib directory. There was a permissions issue that I had to resolve. But it's still not working when I use the shared.loader setting. I reconfirmed that the path is correct.

What are the best UI design in terms of usability and esthetics you have even seen? I mean both desktop software (of all OS) and website. My list: Picasa 3 - the way it organizes photos. Find-and-highlight-as-you-type in google Chrome. Dynamic search hints when entering something in the search box in Gmail. I'm not a Mac OS X user, but I have seen in most windows on the top toolbar there are both the icons and texts shown for each function, as apposed to on Windows I have seen many programs (MS Office included) have many small toolbar icons which you can hardly understand what they do until you hover the mouse on it for a while to see the hints (if any). The ability to search an setting in Eclipse IDE. the way to make 3D models in Google Sketchup. the way to label an email in Gmail. What are you list? Well, I couldn't resist to list some annoying UI design I have experienced and remember at this moment. IE on Windows server, when you visit the new website, you have to click many times to get it added to the white list before you can start browsing, IIRC, it's not fixed in IE 8 when that last time I used it on Windows 2008. The default search behavior in the File Explorer on Windows xp, that animated thing... the dialog that shows up when you are trying to save a plain text CSV file in Excel after applied some formatting options which does not compatible with CSV.

Large ListView containing images in Android

For various Android applications, I need large ListViews, i.e. such views with 100-300 entries. All entries must be loaded in bulk when the application is started, as some sorting and processing is necessary and the application cannot know which items to display first, otherwise. So far, I've been loading the images for all items in bulk as well, which are then saved in an ArrayList<CustomType> together with the rest of the data for each entry. But of course, this is not a good practice, as you're very likely to have an OutOfMemoryException then: The references to all images in the ArrayList prevent the garbage collector from working. So the best solution is, obviously, to load only the text data in bulk whereas the images are then loaded as needed, right? The Google Play application does this, for example: You can see that images are loaded as you scroll to them, i.e. they are probably loaded in the adapter's getView() method. But with Google Play, this is a different problem, anyway, as the images must be loaded from the Internet, which is not the case for me. My problem is not that loading the images takes too long, but storing them requires too much memory. So what should I do with the images? Load in getView(), when they are really needed? Would make scrolling sluggish. So calling an AsyncTask then? Or just a normal Thread? Parametrize it? I could save the images that are already loaded into a HashMap<String,Bitmap>, so that they don't need to be loaded again in getView(). But if this is done, you have the memory problem again: The HashMap stores references to all images, so in the end, you could have the OutOfMemoryException again. I know that there are already lots of questions here that discuss "Lazy loading" of images. But they mainly cover the problem of slow loading, not too much memory consumption.

Is it "right" to translate error messages?

This is somehow subjective depending on the target translation language, but bear with me for a sec. I have recently been involved in a translation project. The goal was to translate the strings of an MVC framework to the Greek language. 70% of the language strings of the framework where translated, however 30% where intentionally left out. The decision was that we will not translate error messages aimed towards the developer of the application. The reasoning behind this (in short) was: are aimed towards designers/programmers. Programmers ( and even designers :) ) should have a basic understanding of English, at least enough so they can search on it on Google if they do not know what it means. (racist?) are aimed towards the developer and in a perfect world should not be displayed to the end user of the application as they concern the inner workings of the web application itself. i.e "You must set the database name in your database config file." and perhaps most importantly, they make the life of the developer harder when he tries to get more information/help regarding the error. For example the above error yields 8 results in Google (in quotes), whereas its Greek translation yields exactly 0. I know that this depends on the popularity of the target translation language and the application itself. For example I'm guessing that there are is vast amount of documentation regarding German SAP error messages (i know, i know, SAP IS German, but you get the point), as opposed to Greek Error Messages documentation regarding random application X which has about 500 installations worldwide. So to summarize: When you develop language translation packs for your applications do you translate error messages? Do you only do for predominant languages like English/Spanish/German/French? Or do you live them intact? I'm not looking for the "right" or "correct" answer, I'm looking for a "best-practices" answer, or if this problem is defined in any "official" standard/policy that you have had experience with.

What will be the SQL Query for this? A LINQ query will be more better. If you know a better way to achieve this, please help.

How to reference an object in a lower fragment in android

I am trying to build a help screen that is going to go on a mediaplayer. The idea is to put a fragment with a transparent theme on top of the current view. (See How do I create a help overlay like you see in a few Android apps and ICS? for the basic idea). Now, I understand the steps in the mentioned link, but how do I connect the circles and arrows and paragraphs next to each one (explaining what each one was) to the lower object? Example, I have an object: R.id.music_button and I want there to be and arrow that points to music button. Trying to support as many devices as we do it will be very difficult to just draw a few pictures as part of the top layout and expect them to line up. Again, how do I reference an object on a fragment below the top level? Thanks

I have a database table with parent child relationships between different rows. 1 parent can have any number of children. Children do not have children. I want to copy 'Message' from 'Parent Category' to child categories. CategoryID Name Value Message ParentID DeptId 1 Books 9 Specials 1 2 Music 7 1 3 Paperback 25 1 1 4 PDFs 26 1 2 5 CDs 35 2 1 If that was sample data, Paperback should have Specials as it's Message after the query is run. I have gotten the child rows (the query runs very slow, don't know why), but how do I get the data and assign it to appropriate child rows? --@DeptId = 1 select * from Categories where ParentID in( select CategoryID from Categories where DeptID = @DeptId ) I would like to see a solution that would not use cursors. jQuery.data() works in Mac OS WebKit, but not on iPhone OS?

I'm playing around with jQTouch for an iPhone OS app that I've been toying with off and on for a while. I wanted to try my hand building it as a web app so I started playing with jQTouch. For reference, here is the page+source (all my code is currently in index.html so you can just "View Source" to see it all): http://rpj.me/doughapp.com/wd/ Essentially, I'm trying to save pertinent JSON objects retrieved from Google Local into DOM objects using the data() method (in this example, obj is the Google Local object): $('#locPane').data('selected', obj); then later (in a different "pane"), retrieving that object to be used: $('#locPane').bind('pageAnimationEnd', function(e, inf) { var selobj = $(this).data('selected'); // use 'selobj' here ... } In Chromium and Safari on the desktop OS (Snow Leopard in my case), this works perfectly (try it out). However, the same code returns undefined for the call to $(this).data('selected') in the second snippet above. I've also tried $('#' + e.target.id).data('selected') and even the naive $('#locPane').data('selected'). All variants return undefined in the iPhone OS version of WebKit, but not on the desktop. Interestingly, the running this on Mobile Safari in the iPhone Simulator fails as well. If you look at the full source, you'll see that I even try to save this object into my global jQTouch object (named jqt in my code). This, too, fails on the mobile platform. Has anyone else ever ran into this? I'll admit to not being a web/javascript programmer by trade, so if I'm making an idiot's error please call me out on it. Can I get a reference to an object created in a jQuery plugin?

Is a switch statment ok for 30 or so conditions?

I am in the final stages of creating an MP4 tag parser in .Net. For those who have experience with tagging music you would be aware that there are an average of 30 or so tags. If tested out different types of loops and it seems that a switch statement with Const values seems to be the way to go with regard to catching the tags in binary. The switch allows me to search the binary without the need to know which order the tags are stored or if there are some not present but I wonder if anyone would be against using a switch statement for so many conditionals. Any insight is much appreciated.

Attempting to calculate width of Map Overlays on the fly

Hey all- I am working on an Android app that utilizes the Google Maps API MapView, MapController, MapActivity, and ItemizedOverlay. I am basically trying to recreate certain functionalities of the Maps app (damn Google for not providing speech bubbles—for lack of a better name—for items!), particularly those speech bubbles. I have an invisible XML structure for the speech bubble in the XML layout file containing my MapView. The first time I show a speech bubble I grab that XML and remove it from it's current parent, applying some ItemizedOverlay.LayoutParams to it, and add it to the MapView as an Overlay. I position it above the item that was selected, fill it with the proper text, then set it to visible. This all works great. The goal here, though, is to also automatically animate the map to reveal any parts of a speech bubble that may be off-screen when it opens. So I'm trying popup.getWidth() (popup is the instance of my LinearLayout that is the speech bubble) after I do all the manipulation to the bubble, even after I display it to the user. Problem is, popup.getWidth() is returning me the width of the previously displayed popup, not the currently displayed one. I can't figure out why this would be happening if I'm fetching the width after I set it to visible with its new dimensions (which, by the way, are relative when I'm setting them with LayoutParams: fill_content for both width and height).. I have even tried forcing both the MapView and the "popup" to invalidate() before trying to fetch the width. Any ideas why this may be happening? How can I force the View to settle into its new dimensions before trying to fetch them? Thanks! Nick

Regarding the black art of managing memory on iPhone OS devices: what do the different levels of memory warning mean. Level 1? Level 2? Does the dial go to 11? Context: After an extensive memory stress testing period - including running my iPad app with the iPod music player app playing, I am inclined to ignore the random yet infrequent memory warnings I am receiving. Home based business would like customers to schedule via website the time, day and date they want to take a class.

I'm using google blogger. I want to ad thumbnail images of different classes I will be offering in my home film/video/sound/lighting studio. The idea is the prospective student visits my website, sees a class they want to take, clicks the thumbnail so first read a descriptive article about the class, at which point they can schedule the class for the time, day, and date of their choosing between the hours of 5am to 9pm, 365 days a year. As soon as the student has inputed the time, day and date of the class they want, they would go to a check out page to purchase the class time. The student would then be sent an email confirmation along with the exact location, the class name, and the time and date they selected. I was thinking of using Dwolla for the check out page because Dwolla offers either no fee or 25 cents per payment transaction, but I'm not sure I can hook up to them easily enough. My blog site is not finished by a longshot. I still have to actually input all of the class thumbnail images along with descriptions, but if you need to see what the page looks like the web address is http://www.myalexlogic.com Google blogger allows for third party code to be added within movable gadgets.
