  I'm using google blogger. I want to ad thumbnail images of different classes I will be offering in my home film/video/sound/lighting studio. The idea is the prospective student visits my website, sees a class they want to take, clicks the thumbnail so first read a descriptive article about the class, at which point they can schedule the class for the time, day, and date of their choosing between the hours of 5am to 9pm, 365 days a year. As soon as the student has inputed the time, day and date of the class they want, they would go to a check out page to purchase the class time. The student would then be sent an email confirmation along with the exact location, the class name, and the time and date they selected. I was thinking of using Dwolla for the check out page because Dwolla offers either no fee or 25 cents per payment transaction, but I'm not sure I can hook up to them easily enough. My blog site is not finished by a longshot. I still have to actually input all of the class thumbnail images along with descriptions, but if you need to see what the page looks like the web address is http://www.myalexlogic.com Google blogger allows for third party code to be added within movable gadgets.

• Client-Side caching on IIS7 doesn't seem to work

  I have set content caching on a specific folder by following the local web.config method. I don't think it works, and I would like to fix this. I activate the cache using the IIS / HTTP Headers / Common headers feature. I set them to 1 day of expiration. I opened a page with Google Chrome in private navigation, and then open the Network tab in the console. The first time I load the page, everything loads from the site, obviously. If I refresh the page, I see 2 types of loading in the Network console: the files from Google and Facebook and such have a status of 200, and a size of (from cache). the files from the folder for which I set the caching have a status of 304 and their size is displayed. So, I guess the caching setting doesn't work? Or does the 304 response means that it's loaded from the cache? If they aren't, how can I make it work ? Thanks !

• What is the correct approach to using GWT with persistent objects?

  Hi, I am currently working on a simple web application through Google App engine using GWT. It should be noted that this is my first attempt at such a task. I have run into to following problem/dilema: I have a simple Class (getters/setters and nothing more. For the sake of clarity I will refer to this Class as DataHolder) and I want to make it persistent. To do so I have used JDO which required me to add some annotations and more specifically add a Key field to be used as the primary key. The problem is that using the Key class requires me to import com.google.appengine.api.datastore.Key which is ok on the server side, but then I can't use DataHolder on the client side, because GWT doesn't allow it (as far as I know). So I have created a sister Class ClientDataHolder which is almost identical, though it doesn't have all the JDO annotations nor the Key field. Now this actually works but It feels like I'm doing something wrong. Using this approach would require maintaining to separate classes for each entity I wish to have. So my question is: Is there a better way of doing this? Thank you.

• Workaround for UnsupportedAudioFileException ?

  I'm in a very early stage of writing a small music/rhythm game in Java (via Slick framework, which in turns uses OpenAL, but that's probably irrelevant here). The game needs to read (and playback) several sound files in WAV format, but some of the files are throwing [javax.sound.sampled.UnsupportedAudioFileException] exceptions. at javax.sound.sampled.AudioSystem.getAudioInputStream(AudioSystem.java:1102) at org.newdawn.slick.openal.WaveData.create(WaveData.java:123) at org.newdawn.slick.openal.SoundStore.getWAV(SoundStore.java:713) at org.newdawn.slick.openal.SoundStore.getWAV(SoundStore.java:683) at org.newdawn.slick.Sound.<init>(Sound.java:33) The files can be played back just fine in Winamp or Foobar2000, so this means Java just don't recognize some variants of the file format. What are my options at this point? Note: The files in question are user-supplied, so i cannot just convert them beforehand (using something like audacity). Any conversion steps must be done at runtime.

  I would like to have a button on a web page with the following behavior: On the first click, open a pop-up. On later clicks, if the pop-up is still open, just bring it to the front. If not, re-open. The below code generally works in Firefox, Safari, and IE8 (see here for Chrome woes). However, I have found a failure mode in Firefox that I don't know how to deal with: If for some reason the user has opened a second tab in the pop-up window and that second tab has focus within that window, the popupWindow.focus() command fails to have any effect. (If the first tab has focus within that window, everything works just great.)   I found this question very interesting : Programmatic Bot Detection I have a very similar question, but I'm not bothered about 'badly behaved bots'. I am tracking (in addition to google analytics) the following per visit : Entry URL Referer UserAgent Adwords (by means of query string) Whether or not the user made a purchase etc. The problem is that to calculate any kind of conversion rate I'm ending up with lots of 'bot' visits that are greatly skewing my results. I'd like to ignore as many as possible bot visits, but I want a solution that I don't need to monitor too closely, and that won't in itself be a performance hog and preferably still work if someone has javascript disabled. Are there good published lists of the top 100 bots or so? I did find a list at http://www.user-agents.org/ but that appears to contain hundreds if not thousands of bots. I don't want to check every referer against thousands of links. Here is the current googlebot UserAgent. How often does it change? Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)

  someone wrote a nice framework for developing html5 3d engine. It's GPL/MIT licensed. Do you think it's a good idea to build upon it, and then repackage it and sell it as a service? For eg the framework lets you build 3d environments. so I build on it, maybe add a few features like characters and music in the environment, and turn it into an online game. Is it a feasible idea? Of course, part of the GPL license says that all source code has to be visible to end users. Assuming the web is a winner take all market based on first mover advantage, why care about hiding the source code? It's the product that's being sold that counts.

  Hello friends, I have a JSP page on which I have a div tag in which there is a a IMG tag. Using this IMG tag I want to show an image in it. Here the source path of an image is comes from database so I assigned a JSP variable using JSP scriplet. This JSP variable have the source path of an image. This path of image may be of different machine or of same machine i.e. images are stored on different machine or on same machine i.e. on local machine on different drive. The problem is that how to give path of image stored on different machine as well as on same machine. I have tried different ways like by giving ip address of that machine. Here is the path that of local machine where the image is stored img src= file:\localhost\D:\ScannedSheets\testproj/batch1/IMG001.jpg style="z-index:1; position:absolute; top:0; left:0; width:850; height:1099" With this syntax the image is visible in Internet Explorer but With the same syntax Its not visible in FireFox, Google Chrome etc. Please Guide me in friends. • General web service ideas

  I have a question regarding different types of web services. I'll preface this by saying that I have built a number of apps (for both ios and android) for personal use that interact with the web via php and sql. I have taught myself these languages, and as such don't have the broader background knowledge that many of you do. My question is, in what other ways can you perform an interaction between a web service and a mobile device other than mobile - php - sql - etc. For example, If I built a very simple tracking app for my car, my current method would be to push GPS coordinates from my iphone to my database at a set interval, then I would write a simple bit of javascript that pulled those coordinates out of the database and superimposed them on a google map. Is there a different way to do this? Such as the server acting as a live middle man who simple pushed the coordinates directly to a target browser? Without the database in the middle? If so, are there advantages and disadvantages to these different methods to achieve different goals? I know its a broad question but I'm really intrigued and I'm finding it difficult to word a google search for it. Any info / reading material suggesting would be excellent. Thanks

• SoundManager + FFMPEG causing loud popping sound when streaming MP3s?

  Hi there, I built an application that plays both uploaded original mp3 files, and copies that have been converted with FFMPEG. I am finding that in some cases the FFMPEG files have a horrible popping/clicking/screeching sound for a split second at startup (hear below). But when I analyze the file in an audio editor there is nothing there, so it seems to be either the browser or soundManager reacting badly to something in that file. Wondering if there is any way I can fix this either by adjusting FFMPEG settings, soundManager settings, or..... Any suggestions? • Windows Phone - failing to get a string from a website with login information

  I am new to accessing web services with Windows Phone 7/8. I'm using a WebClient to get a string from a php-website. The site returns a JSON string but at the moment I'm just trying to put it into a TextBox as a normal string just to test if the connection works. The php-page requires an authentication and I think that's where my code is failing. If I replace the Uri with for example "http://www.google.com/index.html" the jsonText TextBox gets filled with html text from Google (oddly enough, this also works even when the WebClient credentials are still set). So is the problem in the setting of the credentials? I couldn't find any good results when searching for guides on how to access php-pages with credentials, only without them. Then I found a short mention somewhere to use the WebClient.Credentials property. But should it work some other way? • What did they program this toy with?

  A rather strange question: I'm often asking myself with what programming languages things were created. I recently found this toy mini computer I played with when I was 13 or so at home. (Note: It is not one of those toy "notebooks", it's really small and came as an extra with a magazine) "Features": Hadware: LCD with a small field of pixels where the games were going on, besides that some stats such as score, highscore etc. Sounds and horrible music when started A really small "keyboard" with a wire Software: At least 14 or so games, from Snake over Tetris and Breakdown to some abomination of a car racing game A calculator Game selecting menu An alarm clock Inside there is a really small circuit board, I don't want to open the thing up now, though. Can you imagine if the games and "Operating System" of this thing where actually programmed using a language? If yes, what language could it be? If not with a programming language, how else was it created?

• AIR app still running when the iphone is blocked?

  I just made a simple game with flash professional 6.0 and adobe AIR sdk 3.4 for iPhone. The problem is this: when I lock the iphone pressing the power button, the screen switches off as usual, but the music of the game still sounds. If I exit the game pressing the home button it exits fine. Is only when locking the phone with the app opened. Also, I opted-out of multitasking for my app, so if I close my app with the home button and I reload it, it loads the main menu. Anyone knows how can I solve this?

  I am building music app, where user can do several tasks including but not limited to listening song, like song, recommend song to a friend and extra. currently I have this model: class Activity(models.Model): activity = models.TextField() user = models.ForeignKey(User) date = models.DateTimeField(auto_now=True) so far I thought about two solutions. 1. saving a string to database. e.g "you listened song xyz" 2. create a dictionary about the activity and save to the database using pickle or json. e.g. dict_ = {"activity_type":"listening", "song":song_obj} I am leaning to the second implementation, but not quite sure. so what do you think about those two methods? do you know better way to achieve the goal?

  I would like to dig into developing for jailbroken devices, just to test what the device could do. I would like, for instance, to alter the ipod music based on geo-location, so i have to program a new daemon that runs in background and fetch gps informations at regular interlavs and then make something with them. Longitude, longitude, for instance, does exactly this, even when the device is locked, and then upload the informations on google latidude. I have some experience as an iphone developer, but i'm not sure on where to find documentation to accomplish such a task. I know about the books "iphone open application development" and "the iphone developer's coockbook", but i don't own them and i'm not sure they have what i'm looking for. Any advice on this?

• How do you get speech dictated without adding it to a grammar list?

  I'm new to Speech Recognition, and I'm working on a project that will receive a command from a recognizable list. For example, I would say "Play song". The computer would ask the song title, and I can say it. It will then compare my answer to my music library and find it. I know how to add recognizable grammar to the SpeechRecognizer object, how to make the computer speak, and how to play a song in iTunes. I cannot, however, figure out how to get it to dictate or listen and interpret something that isn't in the grammar list. Is there a method I'm missing? Or not yet been simplified by Microsoft? I have no code to show for this, as I am not even sure how to search for this particular idea. Of course, I could have the program read my entire library, but that's not an optimal solution considering I have tens of thousands of songs. Thanks in advance!

• PGU HTML Renderer can't render most sites

  I am trying to make a web browser using pygame. I am using PGU for html rendering. I am guessing the reason for this is that the if statement that checks the type of the input and creates the e variable didn't match anything.   Hi, I'm developing an app that is vaguely similar to twitter, in that it allows users to follow one another. I wanted to do this using google app engine, for its scalability promises, but it's proving kind of difficult to get running for a few different reasons. I'd basically like to have a _users table, and a _followers table. Users go into the users table, follower relationships go into _followers. The problem is that each row in the users table will probably have like 100 corresponding records in the _followers table as users start following one another. So the number of rows is going to explode quickly. Using app engine, the volume [shouldn't] be a problem. If I go with mysql, and I do actually start to get some traction, how do I scale this up? Am I going to just end up moving to a distributed database in the end anyway? Should I fight it out with google app engine? I read that Twitter was using mysql, and they've run into this problem, and are now switching to cassandra. Thanks
