• SkyDrive and Consumer Cloud Services

  Paul Thurrrott recently posted an article on the future of SkyDrive and I was asked what I thought about its future by @UserCommunity.  So let’s take a look. The breakdown from Microsoft that Paul described I believe is an accurate representation of users and usages. While I can’t say that I leverage SkyDrive to the extent that it was meant to be I do enjoy having OneNote hosted their and being able to consult and edit it from the desktop, web and Windows Phone. Taking that one step further is the Midwest Geeks group which started as the community of Microsoft related user groups in our region uses SkyDrive groups and shares calendars and documents.  This collaboration aspect isn’t new in itself, but having it connected with the rest of your cloud assets makes life easier. Another recent usage of this type of cloud service is storing your personal music files in order to get that same universal access.  This is a scenario that has some arguments for and against.  On the one hand own once and listen anywhere is great, but the on the other hand the bandwidth cost becomes a giant downside.  This is especially the case since most carriers are now doing away with unlimited data packages. Ultimately I see this type of resource growing an evolving at a phenomenal rate over the next few years as we continue to become more mobile.  Having multiple players such as SkyDrive and iCloud will only help to give us more options.  Only time will tell where we end up next. del.icio.us Tags: SkyDrive,Cloud Services,Paul Thurrott,UserCommunity

• Recommendation on Ticket system with billing feature

  Actually, I do not know if I have used the right terms to describe our situation. Basically, We would like to have a system to help us to do billing and support at the same time. For example, we would like to offer outside users a customer support with ticket system, however the outside users need to purchase some credits beforehand through the system in order to submit their requests. Sometimes, our representatives will charge extra unit of credit for solving some open tickets due to the complexity and hours spent. (It will be nice to submit user a further billing request to same open ticket, and user can either accept/declined) Is there any available application or service we can use for the purpose above?

• Explanation of WCF application life cycle in IIS 6 hosting environment.

  Hi all and thanks for reading, I have a delay issue where my application takes a long time to start up when first called after an determinate period since the last call. The web application is a WCF service and we are talking about a delay of ~18seconds before the actual processing starts. Now, I believe I know how to reduce this delay so that is not my question (it's more a stackoverflow deal anyway) My question is, Can anyone explain to me why is it that despite me disabling worker process shutdown, and worker process recycling the application still 'winds down' after a indeterminate period of time of inactivity? To understand this I need to know more about the innerworkings of WCF services hosted in IIS. I fully expect there to be a straight forward answer to this. • Mysterious login attempts to windows server

  I have a Windows 2008R2 server that is reporting failed login attempts from a number of workstations on our network. Some event log details: Event ID 4625, Status: 0xc000006d, Sub Status: 0xc0000064 Security ID: NULL SID, Account Name: joedoe, Account Domain: Acme Workstation Name: WINXP1, Source Network Address: 192.168.1.23, Source Port: 1904 Logon Process: NtLmSsp, Authentication Package: NTLM, Logon Type: 3 (network) I believe this is coming from some netbios service or similar (maybe the file explorer), keeping an inventory of its network neighborhood and also trying to authenticate. Is there a way to turn this off without having to turn off file sharing all together? In other words, clients authenticating against file servers that they use is of course no problem, but I want to eliminate clients trying to authenticate to servers that they are not using and have no business with. The above example is only one of thousands of log alerts for similar failed network authentications. What can I do to clean this up / handle this? Thanks.

• Server Core remote management from Windows 7 machine

  I've installed Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 because I would like to administer my Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core machine. The problem that I'm getting when I try to run Server Manager is: Connecting to remote server failed with the following error message: Access is denied. For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic. This is what I've done so far: I'm running WinRM service on both machines (Server and Window 7) I've added my server to trusted hosts on my Windows 7 machine: winrm set winrm/config/client @{TrustedHosts="WINSRV2"} I've added registry entry on Windows 7 machine: reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f I've enabled Remote Management inbound rule on server firewall using CoreConfigurator 2.0 both machines are in the same subnet and when I search for network machines on Windows 7 I see my server. Question What else should I do to make it work? I would like to run several different remote management tools against my server machine.

• Replicate Oracle to MySQL

  I am developing a web apps, this web application will be using MySQL. Now I need to replicate my client's Oracle database into MySQL, only a few tables will be involved.. a table can be up to 2-3 million rows. I only have SELECT privilege on this Oracle, so don't ask me to install any kind of service on the Oracle machine. I have complete control on the MySQL side however. The replication is only one way (Oracle to MySQL). I can write a simple script to truncate MySQL table and repopulate it every night but I think this is very inefficient, there must be a better way. Is there any free tools I can use? Expensive database replication system is definitely out of the question.

• windows 7 crash during hibernation

  At times, when I hibernate my Dell Latitude e6400 with Windows 7 (64 bit), the laptop screen goes black as it should, but then it takes several minutes before it powers down. Then, when I attempt to "resume," Windows boots up from a fresh startup, with all my work lost, and tells me that it's recovered from a serious error. What can I do to resolve this problem? Other background info: -I got a new hard drive with plenty of space about a year ago; I only use a small fraction of that space. This sometimes happens when I don't have any programs running at all. If it's relevant, I do have Dropbox and OneDrive running in the background, though. -The problem usually occurs when I hibernate just after I unplug from an external monitor to bring my laptop home, but I believe it happens at other times, too. • Fix Google Reader Lag by Blocking Google Plus Button

  Chrome: Many Google Reader fans have noticed, since the upgrades last month, that the service is unbearably slow. Speed things up by blocking the Google Plus button. Ever since the upgrade from the old Google Reader interface to the new integrated-with-Google-Plus interface, many Google Reader users were reporting a painfully long lag between reading entries in Reader. Previously hitting a keyboard shortcut or arrow button to move you through the new stories was instant with no noticeable lag. After the upgrade a lag of 3-5 seconds per individual story became common (we experienced this annoying lag around the How-To Geek office immediately after the upgrade). One of the theories was that the addition of the Google Plus button to every article was causing memory issues. Geeks Are Sexy tested the theory by blocking this address: plusone.google.com/u/0/_/+1/fastbutton using AdBlock. While people were reporting great success with that move (and you may find it works great too) we didn’t have any luck. What did work for us was installing Chromeblock and, while visiting reader.google.com, clicking on the ChromeBlock toolbar button and blocking Google +1. After that the 3-5 second lag vanished and browsing articles was as snappy as it had been. Hit up the link below to grab a copy of Chromeblock. • don't have "sufficient right" to my own TFS 2010

  after I removed an active directory domain service, I lost all my accounts...then not only the SQL server and the TFS stopped working, the TFs administration console also says that I don't have sufficient right to add members... Now I manage to get the SQL server kind of running, and I can see my project in team explorer, but the TFS still says SQL access denied, SQL server says I don't have permission to add new logins or add my admin account to sysadmin, the TFS still give me the TF246017 tfs could not connect to the database and I don't have sufficient right to add member to any of the project groups... Anybody knows how can I get all these permissions back....?

• Cant logon to domain over site-to-site vpn

  Tied together branch office with main office over two Cisco ASAs. The (internal) networks on either side can communicate with the other. I can ping, use the DC's DNS service and even join a domain on a new client. I can't however logon, I get the "domain controller is not available" error message on client. I find nothing peculiar in DC's event logs. Sicne it's site-to-site (with ping), it's always up so it should work. No firewall rules (except allow any any) between the two networks (of either side). Main site internal net: 10.10.10.0/24 Branch office net: 10.180.3.0/24 Am I overlooking something here? Where should I start investigating this?d

Now I have for some time been tracking some strange 503 errors. But I cant seem to find the silver bullet. Even in the morning when the server dosen't seem to be doing anything. • when to introduce an application services tier in an n-tier application

  I am developing a web based application whose primary objective is to fetch data from the database, display it on the UI, take in user inputs and write them back to the database. The application is not going to be doing any industrial strength algorithm crunching, but will be receiving a very high number of hits at peak times (described below) which will be changing thru the day. The layers are your typical Presentation, Business, Data. The data layer is taken care of by the database server. The business layer will contain the DAL component to access the database server over tcp. The choices I have to separate these layers into tiers are: The presentation and business layers can be either kept on the same tier. The presentation layer on a separate tier by itself and the business layer on a separate tier by itself. In the case of choice 2, the business layer will be accessed by the presentation layer using a WCF service either over http or tcp. I don't see any heavy processing being done on the Business layer, so I am leaning towards option 1 above. I also feel for the same reason, adding a new tier will only introduce the network latency. However, in terms of scalability in case I need to scale up or scale out, which is a better way to go? This application will need to be able to support up to 6 million users an hour. There will be a reasonable amount of data in each user session, storing user's preferences and other details. I will be using page level caching as well.

• Permission settings for apache2 web content directories with several users?

  Hi there. I've got a Debian VPS set up with a LAMP-stack. My apache2 instance runs on the user account 'www-data'. In addition to the root account and the service accounts I have several user accounts belonging to friends, family and myself that includes FTP-access. This is to allow the users to drop files to the root of their domain which is located in their home folder. I am having issues with setting the correct permissions so that Apache is able to serve the content ("403 Forbidden"). I could just do a 'chmod -R 755 *' on the entire www-directory for each domain, but from what I gather that's not a good idea.
