• dynamically created controls and postback

  Hi all, I have created dynamic controls (Radiobuttonlists) in an asp.net page (c#). I create them after a button click like this. RadioButtonList rbl = new RadioButtonList(); c2.Controls.Add(rbl); //Set properties of rbl rbl.RepeatLayout = RepeatLayout.Flow; rbl.ID = string.Format("rbl{0}", item.QuestionID); rbl.RepeatDirection = RepeatDirection.Horizontal; rbl.Items.Add(new ListItem("True", "1")); rbl.Items.Add(new ListItem("False", "0")); rbl.Items.Add(new ListItem("?", "-1")); Now the problem arises when I click the submit button, the controls are lost. I know it's better to actually put the controls in page_init event. but is there no workaround so I can still initiate my controls after button click? • Create new or update existing entity at one go with JPA

  A have a JPA entity that has timestamp field and is distinguished by a complex identifier field. What I need is to update timestamp in an entity that has already been stored, otherwise create and store new entity with the current timestamp. As it turns out the task is not as simple as it seems from the first sight. The problem is that in concurrent environment I get nasty "Unique index or primary key violation" exception. Here's my code: // Load existing entity, if any. Entity e = entityManager.find(Entity.class, id); if (e == null) { // Could not find entity with the specified id in the database, so create new one. e = entityManager.merge(new Entity(id)); } // Set current time... e.setTimestamp(new Date()); // ...and finally save entity. entityManager.flush(); Please note that in this example entity identifier is not generated on insert, it is known in advance. When two or more of threads run this block of code in parallel, they may simultaneously get null from entityManager.find(Entity.class, id) method call, so they will attempt to save two or more entities at the same time, with the same identifier resulting in error. I think that there are few solutions to the problem. Sure I could synchronize this code block with a global lock to prevent concurrent access to the database, but would it be the most efficient way? Some databases support very handy MERGE statement that updates existing or creates new row if none exists. But I doubt that OpenJPA (JPA implementation of my choice) supports it. Event if JPA does not support SQL MERGE, I can always fall back to plain old JDBC and do whatever I want with the database. But I don't want to leave comfortable API and mess with hairy JDBC+SQL combination. There is a magic trick to fix it using standard JPA API only, but I don't know it yet. Please help.

• Which languages support class replacement?

  Hi, I'm writing my master thesis, which deals with AOP in .NET, among other things, and I mention the lack of support for replacing classes at load time as an important factor in the fact that there are currently no .NET AOP frameworks that perform true dynamic weaving -- not without imposing the requirement that woven classes must extend ContextBoundObject or MarshalByRefObject or expose all their semantics on an interface. You can however do this in Java thanks to ClassFileTransformer: You extend ClassFileTransformer. You subscribe to the class load event. On class load, you rewrite the class and replace it. All this is very well, but my project director has asked me, quite in the last minute, to give him a list of languages that do / do not support class replacement. I really have no time to look for this now: I wouldn't feel comfortable just doing a superficial research and potentially putting erroneous information in my thesis. So I ask you, oh almighty programming community, can you help out? Of course, I'm not asking you to research this yourselves. Simply, if you know for sure that a particular language supports / doesn't support this, leave it as an answer. If you're not sure please don't forget to point it out. Thanks so much!

• SQL Server log backups "stalling"

  I have interited a box running SQL Server 2008 and Windows 2003, and have had a few events where largeish (35GB) log backups "stall", both before and after the installation of SQL 2008 SP1. The server log ships to a standby, so regular log backups are taken at 15 minute intervals. However, after an index reorg causes the log to grow to about 35GB (on a DB with about 17GB of data), the next log backup runs to ~95% completion, then seems to stop. The process shows as suspended, with a wait state of BACKUPIO. CPU, read, and write activity on the SPID also does not change, and the process stays in this state for hours, when normally a backup of this size should complete in about 20 minutes. This server has a single RAID-1 volume, thus the source database files and destination backup files are on the same volume. However, I cannot determine if another process is blocking the backup. The backup SPID cannot be killed, and the only way to terminate the log backup and clear the lock on the backup file is to cycle the SQL Server service. There was one event where the backup terminated completely, with an error that another process had locked the backup file, but no details about what that process was. Can anyone suggest a cause or diagnostic process to this situation?

• Refreshing a JPA result list which is bound with a jTable

  First off, I hage to write this on my mobile. But I'll try to format it properly. In Netbeans I created a jTable and bound it's values to a JPA result set. This works great. The qery contains a param which i set in the pre-create box of the "query result" component. So just before netbeans creates the query result i write this: myQuery.setParameter("year", "1997"); This works fine. Now, I have an event handler which is supposed to change the param and display the new values in the table. So I do this: myQuery.setParameter("year", "2005"); myResultList.clear(); myResultList.addAll(myQuery.getResultList()); jTable1.updateUI(); This works, but it feels wrong to me. Note: the result set is bound to the table. So I was hoping there was something like this: myQuery.setParameter("year", "2005"); myResultList.refresh(); Is there something like this?

• Git: changes not reflecting on other checkouts - huh?

  Okay, so, I have my branches (git branch -a): * chat master remotes/origin/HEAD -> origin/master remotes/origin/chat I make changes (still with the 'chat' branch checkout out), commit, and push. I go to my server, on which I have a clone of the repository, and I do a fetch: git getch then I switch to the chat branch: git checkout --track -b chat origin/chat and I event do a pull, just to make sure everything is up to date: git pull and my changes from my other computer are NOT. THERE. What the heck am I doing wrong? If I had hair, I would have pulled it out. Thankfully I am bald. • WPF data-bound ComboBox only shows first item of ItemsSource list

  Hi all, I'm sure I'm doing something stupid but for the life of me I can't think of right now. I have a ComboBox that is data-bound to a list of Layout objects. The list is initially empty but things are added over time. When the list is updated by the model the first time, this update reflects properly in the ComboBox. However, subsequent updates never show up in the ComboBox even though I can see that the list itself contains these items. Since the first update works, I know the data-binding is OK - so what am I doing wrong here? • How to force positioned elements to stay withing viewable browser area?

  I have a script which inserts "popup" elements into the DOM. It sets their top and left css properties relative to mouse coordinates on a click event. It works great except that the height of these "popup" elements are variable and some of them extend beyond the viewable area of the browser window. I would like to avoid this. • Timer takes 10 ms more then interval

  Hi All, I am using a timer with interval 50 miliseconds. But in the timer's tick event when I print the time it's always 62 or 65 ms. I don't understand why it's taking 10 ms more. Please can some one have look into this. • Widget host app with custom view - onClick is not triggered in the app widget.

  I'm writing an app that will host widgets. The app has custom view (which probably is the source of issue). I obtain AppWidgetHostView like this private AppWidgetHostView widget; ... AppWidgetProviderInfo appWidgetInfo = mAppWidgetManager.getAppWidgetInfo(appWidgetId); widget = mAppWidgetHost.createView(this, appWidgetId, appWidgetInfo); widget.setAppWidget(appWidgetId, appWidgetInfo); mView.addWidget(widget, appWidgetInfo); mView.addWidget() basically just remembers this AppWidgetHostView instance and then draws it directly onto canvas. Visually everything is fine - I can see the actual widget. But the issue is with reacting on UI events. Please advise what needs to be done in the parent view in order to correctly trigger handlers in the widgets like onClick(). Notes: I used standard widgets which normally react on click events. None worked. I also created my own test widget with listener (via views.setOnClickPendingIntent(R.id.appwidget_text, pending);) and onClick() is successfully triggered if the widget is added on Homescreen, but doesn't work in my app. mView correctly detects click event and I tried to call widget.performClick() there, which returns false meaning onClickListener is not registered in the widget. But according to source mAppWidgetHost.createView() would call updateAppWidget which would register its onClick listener.. Please advise where to look at. Thanks

  Good day, I am developing using Entity Framework and WPF, and I am encountering some errors and I don't know why. When saving a record (using a BackgroundWorker), I set the entities change tracker to nothing (null), attach the record to a new disposable context, save it, detach, and dispose of the context. Saving a record fires and event in the MainViewModel of the program that the other ViewModels (including the one that is saving) need to refresh their entities to reflect changes. When I save (and it subsequently refreshes) I get the following error: The calling thread cannot access this object because a different thread owns it. I thought that with the DoWhile block, it would wait (and when i step through it does) until the save thread finished, and all would be good. But it would seem that something (either the main thread or the save thread) is still doing something that is interfering. Is there a better way of doing this? Am I doing it is a goofy kludgey fashion? Any help would be appreciated. (Apparently Firefox recognized kludgey as a word. Interesting)

  Hi guys I have an instance where I have a logo image as part of some artwork.. If a user uploads a new logo I have a form field which is larger than the default logo. I then use that form field to position the new image. • How to implement message queuing and handling in AWS with NServiceBus

  I am creating a new ASP MVC order application in the Amazon (AWS) cloud with the persistence layer at my local datacenter. I will be using the CQRS pattern. The goal of the project is high availability using Queue(s) to store and forward writes (commands/events) that can be picked up and handled asynchronously at my local datacenter. Then, ff the WAN or my local datacenter fails, my cloud MVC app can still take orders and just queue them up until processing can resume. My first thought was to use AWS SQS for the queuing and create my own queue consumer/dispatcher/handler in my own c# application to process the incoming messages/events. MVC (@ Amazon) -- Event/POCO -- SQS -- QueueReader (@ my datacenter) -- DB Then I found NServiceBus. NSB seems to handle lots of details very nicely: message handling, retries, error handling, etc. I hate to reinvent the wheel, and NServiceBus seems like a full featured and mature product that would be perfect for me. But on further research, it does NOT look like NServiceBus is really meant to be used over the WAN in physically separated environments (Cloud to my Datacenter). Google and SO don't really paint a good picture of using NServiceBus across the WAN like I need. How can I use NServiceBus across the WAN? Or is there a better solution to handle queuing and message handling between Amazon an my local datacenter?

• How can I get a custom made set of checkboxes return values in the postback?

The problem is that when this page posts back via some event on the page, I never get these tags in the Request.Form collection. Is this simply how ASP.NET works (e.g. only server-side control post back) or am I missing something simple. My understanding was that a postback should bring back all the form variables.

  I am currently developing a Ext JS application with many views/controlers/... I would have to do something like this i assume: init: function () { this.control({ '#administration_User': { afterrender: this.onAfterRender } }); }, Is there a better way to do this? Or just an other event? Though the main thing i am questioning myself is if it is the best practice to load all the javascript at startup. Wouldnt it be better to only load the controllers/views/... which the client does need right now? Or should i load all the JS at startup? If i do want to load the controllers dynamicly how could i do this? I assume a would have to remove them from my application arrays (views, controllers, stores) and create an instance if i do need it and mby set the view in the controllers init?! What's best practice??

• Change Rectangle Fill Based on ColumnWidth of a grid

  Essentially i want to do as the title says, if the columnwidth is .50 then the rectangle should be red, if it's .75 then it should be amber, and if it's 1 then it should be green. I thought I could achieve this with DataTriggers but for some reason I am getting "Object Reference Not Set To An Instance Of An Object" error, here is my code, am I missing something here? • question about jQuery droppable/draggable.

  I modified a sample photo manager application. photo manager application Instead of photos, I have employee records coming from a query. My version will let managers mark employees as on vacation, or at work. One of the things I did is to include employee ids like <a href="123">. I get the ids from event.target. This works for the click function but not for the "droppable" function.   I currently have a tabbed system in place, however it not doing exactly as I need it too, I was hoping that by navigating to the URL with #tab2 suffixed on then end it would navigate to my tabbed page and the tab that is present in the URL would be the one that is active, however the first tab in the sequence is always active, is there a way to check what is being passed in the URL first and if there is #tabid present then make that tab the current tab? After adding the new tab is selected. <Button Command="{Binding AddItemCommand}" Content="Add item"/> Inside of the new ViewModel is a button that needs to be focused each time a new tab is added. I have tried to use the FocusManager and the Initialized event in the ItemView but these are only called for the first time I add a new tab. <UserControl x:Class="ItemView" ...   I am having trouble with my code. What i'm trying to do is: 1. Create a Check Box, make it visible 2. When Check Box is selected display Combo Box, which will have few items for example ("1","2") 3. When 1 is selected from Combo Box then make 1 Text Field visible 4. When 2 is selected from Combo Box then make 2 Text Field's visible What I am able to do is when Check Box is clicked, it displays the Combo Box with the items. I am not able provide functionality to the items in the Combo Box, such as when Item1 is clicked then make 1 Text Field visible. Please help needed. • Problems with overriding OnPaint and grabbing mouse events in C# UserControl containing other controls

  I've made a control which contains few other controls like PictureBox, Label and TextBox. But I'm having two problems: 1. I tried to paint some things on top of my control and when I'm overriding OnPaint, it results that things I try to draw are under controls that my control contains. Areas on which I would like to draw intersect with controls in ways that are not easy to predict. I mean that it includes something drawn on controls inside as well as on base of control. Is there a simple way to draw something on top of all contents of my control? Setting ForeColor to Transparent isn't a solution that would help me much. 2. I have a problem with grabbing mouse click events when I place my control on a form and add click event handling. It only works when I click on an area not occupied by controls inside. I would like the whole control to react to clicks and other actions like it was one consistent control. How can I redirect/handle these clicks to make them work the way I want? • Proper way to scan a range of IP addresses

  Given a range of IP addresses entered by a user (through various means), I want to identify which of these machines have software running that I can talk to. Here's the basic process: Ping these addresses to find available machines Connect to a known socket on the available machines Send a message to the successfully established sockets Compare the response to the expected response Steps 2-4 are straight forward for me. What is the best way to implement the first step in .NET? I'm looking at the System.Net.NetworkInformation.Ping class. Should I ping multiple addresses simultaneously to speed up the process? If I ping one address at a time with a long timeout it could take forever. But with a small timeout, I may miss some machines that are available. Sometimes pings appear to be failing even when I know that the address points to an active machine. Do I need to ping twice in the event of the request getting discarded? To top it all off, when I scan large collections of addresses with the network cable unplugged, Ping throws a NullReferenceException in FreeUnmanagedResources(). !? Any pointers on the best approach to scanning a range of IPs like this?

• How to maintain a persistant network-connection between two applications over a network?

  I was recently approached by my management with an interesting problem - where I am pretty sure I am telling my bosses the correct information but I really want to make sure I am telling them the correct stuff. I am being asked to develop some software that has this function: An application at one location is constantly processing real-time data every second and only generates data if the underlying data has changed in any way. On the event that the data has changed send the results to another box over a network Maintains a persistent connection between the both machines, altering the remote box if for some reason the network connection went down From what I understand, I imagine that I need to do some reading on doing some sort of TCP/IP socket-level stuff. That way if the connection is dropped the remote location will be aware that the data it has received may be stale. However management seems to be very convinced that this can be accomplished using SOAP. I was under the impression that SOAP is more or less a way for a client to initiate a procedure from a server and get some results via the HTTP protocol. Am I wrong in assuming this? I haven't been able to find much information on how SOAP might be able to solve a problem like this. I feel like a lot of people around my office are using SOAP as a buzzword and that has generated a bit of confusion over what SOAP actually is - and is capable of. Any thoughts on how to accomplish this task would be appreciated!
