• Maximum burn speed keeps decreasing from Nero?

  I have a 16x DL DVD burner in my work machine (XP SP3). I'm using 8x TDK DVD+R media. The first dozen or so disks burned fine using Nero, but after that I started to coaster every disk. I asked Nero to calculate the maximum speed, and it calculated it at 4x. This worked for a few disks, then the same issues. I'm currently burning at 1.2x. I've since tried other brands and full 16x compatible disks, I can't get my burn speed to be recognized as any faster than what it's currently at. I've tried uninstalling Nero. I've tried burning directly in Windows, and also tested an MP3 CD in iTunes, and no luck. Any suggestions, short of reinstalling Windows, would be great!

• Bigger ProjectServer farm is performing worse

  I am using Project Server 2007 sp3 with SharePoint 2007 sp3 and SQL Server 2008 r2. I have recently moved my farm from 2 servers (1 DB and 1 App/Web) to a very big farm having Many Servers, Clustered Database, Load Balancer, Powerful processors and Large RAM. This Farm has more than one Web Servers, Project App Servers, SharePoint App Servers and a separate Index Server. But the performance of Project Server in the new Farm has been downgraded. Views are taking even more time to load data and Project publishing time has also been increased. I am also facing deadlock problems which are causing the project server queue jobs to fail. Could anyone inform me that what would be the reason of this problem and what should be the starting point to look into the issue? Is it mainly because now the application server needs to communicate with other application servers which were not needed in the previous farm? Thanks!

• Linux: Can I link multiple destinations via softlinks?

  Attempting to end up with something similar to this: $ ls -l lrwxrwxrwx 1 user group 4 Jun 28 2010 foo -> /home/bar lrwxrwxrwx 1 user group 4 Jun 29 2010 foo -> /etc/bar The intention is to be able to move a file to foo & have it go to both destination directories for now. The goal is to eventually unlink /home/bar link after confirming there are no issues with moving the files to /etc/bar. I am restricted in that I am unable to change or add to the process that moves the files.

• Windows 7 x64 Hard Freezing (again)

  Awhile ago, my computer was randomly freezing a few minutes after booting, and I ended up replacing the CPU and mobo after testing the RAM and hard drive, I also couldn't find anything wrong with the video card. So after replacing the presumably faulty hardware, everything worked fine for about a month and a half. All of a sudden, My computer is randomly freezing a few minutes after loading up any intensive application (games, mostly). Most of the time it just freezes with the current frame until I hard reset, although once it printed a BSOD message stating that dxgmms1.sys was to blame. The only difference between these two episodes I can think of is that I can do word/internet/work without issue now, as opposed to the near uselessness my computer was rendered last time. For those of you who want to know, I tested my memory with memtest86 (for 64 bit machines). I can't figure out what could have started this latest round of issues, the event logger just states that a kernel-power event has occurred (like last time) but I think thats just a generic "this machine has rebooted after a sudden shutdown" message.

• There is a problem with the Office database

  After a TimeMachine restore; office 2011 is having kittens over permissions it would seem. Having attempted a 'repair' out of Disk Utility, am still seeing: 'there is a problem with the Office database' upon startup. After which Word/Excel work without issues. Outlook on the other hand won't even start. Given the obvious message here "You do not have write access to the Outlook application folder" - where is the DB located to check?! Ideas ? Thank you

• reinstalling vista product key

  I recently formatted my laptop which came with Vista preinstalled and installed Windows 7 on the primary partition. I've now installed Vista on a different partition, but it won't activate my valid product key. I've looked around on here and have seen similar issues being raised, but I don't have the telephonic activation option (only option I have is online activation). I am located in South Africa. When I enter my product key from my sticker it says it is not valid, so I must either try to activate online again or buy a different product key. I have reinstalled Vista on the primary partition several times and activated the key without a problem. This is the first time I am installing it on a different partition.

• IE8 Unable to download files

  I recently installed Windows 7. I can browse to any webpage using IE8, but if I click on any links to download files, I receive the following error: Unable to download [filename] from [website]. Unable to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later. I can download files perfectly fine using firefox, it's just IE that is having issues. There are no messages in the windows event log. I have no add-ins installed and have made no security changes as this is a fresh install. Any ideas?

• Leave Windows Session Logged On

  Is a bad idea for any reason to leave accounts logged onto Windows remote desktop sessions? So instead of logging off, just closing the session so it locks. In this case, the limited number of remote desktop connections is not an issue. I am just wondering if anyone has seen sessions leak memory over time or maybe security issues with doing this, etc... I could see if programs were left open they might suck up and or leak memory, but has anyone seen this with Microsoft software such as Control Panels, Management Consoles, and Exchange System Administrator?

• When is it time to buy a new hard drive, and what considerations go into buying a new hard drive?

  I've had my current hard drive for about 4-5 years now, and I've never had a problem with it before, but now it's making whirring noises. It's done this before and, last time, the noise did go away the next day, but I have accumulated quite a bit of information that I wouldn't want to lose on the drive. HD Tune Pro and Berlac Advisor both said the drive was healthy, and I wouldn't want to get a new one unless it was absolutely necessary or was going to show drastic performance improvements. My only knock against the drive would be that Visual Studio takes longer to load than I'd like it to. HD Tune Pro says the average read speed is 54.3MB/s. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, but it seems about average compared to similar drives on http://www.hdtune.com/testresults.html. Model #: WDC WD5000AAJS-22YFA0 So, should hard drives be replaced after a certain amount of time? Has mine reached that point? Would a new hard drive be any faster?

• How much power supply do I need for my server, and could a shortage be causing my odd crashing?

  I have 5 servers, all with similar hardware (i7, four 2tb 7200rpm drives, two 4tb 5400rpm drives, 430 watt power supply), and lately the machines have been freezing up. This has gotten worse in the last day or so, and I can't pinpoint any explanation. One recent change was adding the two 4tb hard drives. The crashes happen most often while running a large Hadoop job, so I was originally thinking the load was causing some issues, but last night one server just froze without any heavy load on the box (or so I think), other than HDFS (Hadoop's distributed file system) was probably rebalancing itself since two of the five nodes were offline. If I plugin a monitor and keyboard to one of these frozen machines, I can't get any response or feedback on the screen. Any ideas on possible points of failure and/or different logs I can look at to investigate?   My friend has a wifi network with an x-box, a wii, a playstation, and two nintendo portables. She's also got 2-3 PC's and a network printer. She's got a wifi repeater as well. She claims that she didn't have any issues for months with everything working together, and suddenly everything stopped disconnecting. I haven't been over there yet - wanted to figure out the best way to diagnose the thing.   I'm considering getting a Mini for web programming. I do a lot of text searches so I want to put a SSD in it. Does the Mini have any limitations that might effect the performance of a SSD? I'm trying to decide if I should get a Mini Server. I'd like to be able to have two internal drives so one can be SSD for OS and the code I'm working on, and the other can be my storage drive. However, I'm not sure if I'll be using the extra functionality of the server edition OSX or not, so I'm reluctant to pay the $200 premium. In a "regular" Mini I could put the SSD internal and use an external big drive, but would the external drive be fast enough via Firewire? Thanks in advance for any info.

• I bought a domain name at GoDaddy and hosting at Dreamhost but the first doesn't work!

  I added the Dreamhost's nameservers like 12 hours ago to: I entered to the following panel: Nameservers -> Set Nameservers (I have specific nameservers for my domains) and added Dreamhost's nameservers liek this: Nameserver 1: NS1.DREAMHOST.COM Nameserver 2: NS2.DREAMHOST.COM Nameserver 3: NS3.DREAMHOST.COM So now in the admin panel I see this: Nameservers Nameservers: (Last Update 2/10/2011) NS1.DREAMHOST.COM NS2.DREAMHOST.COM NS3.DREAMHOST.COM But I get this when I run the analysis tools: Attention Required! There are critical issues Accessing Your Web Site Accessing Your Web Site Properly configuring your domain name and hosting account ensures that visitors can access your site. Did I do something wrong or I have to wait 24 to 48 hours? (Dreamhost does display my page because I can access the other domain name I bought together with the hosting) (By the way, if everyone uses the same nameserver, how will go GoDaddy know which is the hosting space that I purchased among all others)?   Possible Duplicate: Multiple SSL domains on the same IP address and same port? I have the following situation: first domain: test.domain.com IP: 1.2.3.4 Port: 443 SSL: Purchased from godaddy and specific to that domain Works fine no issues. I would like to add another site: test2.domain.com IP: the same Port: can be different SSL: different since I can't use the SSL above because it's specific to the site above. Now, when I add the HTTPS binding to the second site with IP:Port combination it appears to always load the first SSL ignoring the second certificate. How can I add second SSL binding to the same IP using a "different" certificate? Can this be done?

• Windows RRAS multi-network routing

  I am looking for advice, comments and suggestions from anyone who has used Windows RRAS (2008 R2 Pref.) as the primary routers for our multiple offices. We have multiple physical office locations and are looking into utilizing Windows Server 2008 R2 Core as redundant Active/Active routers/gateways for our network as opposed to a physical router from Cisco or Juniper, it costs a lot less! Any problems, issues or documentation anyone would recommend? We will still most likely have a firewall on the edge but the majority of our traffic will be inter-office with some external services. We will be using multiple Class B networks across our two offices.

• Can Windows 8 boot from FireWire?

  I read many times Windows 7 is unable to boot from an external FireWire drive but I wonder if Windows 8 is able to do so. I need to run Windows on my Mac but only very few times so my idea was to move it all to an external drive. I have one of the first Intel Macs so running Windows in a virtual machine is not really fun. The performance is just too poor. Adding a Boot Camp partition to my internal drive is also not possible at the moment.

• Terminal Server 2003 Gaining Time when Windows 7 Client Connects

  A Windows 2003 Terminal Server keeps time perfectly until a Windows 7 Home client connects. Then it gains time at a rate of several seconds per minute. The client connects through a firewall with only the RDP port open. The client runs the same apps on the terminal server that XP clients run with no issues. Using the Microsoft Terminal Server Client application copied to the W7 computer from an XPsp3 computer gives the same results. Current workaround is to sync time every 5 minutes. Any better ideas?

• Explorer image thumbnails are grey/incomplete/partial

  I have recently noticed a problem on my Win7 x64 Home machine. When navigating the pictures library, I run across a fair amount of thumbnails that are grey and only partially rendered. This is not not the absence of thumbnails caused by "always show icons, never thumbnails" checkbox, and is a local drive, have seen many other posts for those issues... I've run cleanmgr for thumbnails, and also manually deleted the .db files from %LOCALAPPADAT%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer. That did actually fix one thumbnail once (while preparing this post) but in general it doesn't work. Why do specialized imaging programs not have this problem, but Explorer does? How do you fix Explorer? It's very annoying!

Does this configuration make sense for a SmartOS HPC, or would you recommend an alternative? System Specs: 2x 8-core xeon 384 GB RAM 30 TB HDs with 2x512GB SSDs Uses: - zfs for serving data to different vms, and over the network; 1 SSD for L2ARC and 1 for ZIL - typically 1-2 ubuntu instances running R and custom C/C++ code My biggest concerns as a newbie to SmartOS and ZFS are: (1) will I get near-metal performance from ubuntu running on SmartOS if it is the only active vm? (2) how do I serve data from the global zfs pool to the containers and other network devices?

How can I know whether one can expect a higher or lower power consumptipn for the change? And how can I estimate the power consumption for each option?

• X58 RAID 10 - Am I forced to use Sata2?

  I'm building a new dev computer. It will be running a few VMWare Worksation virtual machines. I was advised on Serverfault to use Raid10 for performance. Raid 10 uses 4 disks. I contacted my supplier who suggested a gigabyte X58A motherboard and 4 Western Digital Caviar black 6Gb/s disks. I have checked the spec for the X58A board, however, and it says: SATA 3Gb/s: RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10 SATA 6Gb/s: RAID 0, and RAID 1. I'm losing half the bandwidth because I'm forced to use SATA2! What should I do?

• CPU clock scales down so computer is unusable after switching to battery

  When I am plugged in my laptop runs great however when I unplug it and I'm on battery power my CPU clock speed scales down pretty much all the way. I know this is happening by monitoring the clock speed. When plugged in it will usually stay between 1000MHz and 3000MHz but when I unplug it it quickly scales down to less than 500MHz and will get as low as 100MHz and it will NEVER scale up at all on battery power. After I plug the power back in it will then begin operating normally in about a minute. I have tried setting the MIN and MAX CPU performance in power options to 100% and have tried messing around with cooling settings which seemed to be a problem with HP laptops. I have a Toshiba Satellite M500-ST6444 running Windows 7. The BIOS is up to date. I have tried two versions.

• Intel hybrid graphics stuck in power save mode

  I have an Asus UL30V with Intel hybrid graphics. When I bought it it used to switch to turn of the better graphics card to save power and run on a more power effecient one. When I connected the laptop to a power source again I could go to the intel graphics icon on the task bar and click on "switch to enhanced performance mode" or something similar. But like 2-3 months ago it suddenly vanished. I cannot switch modes anymore, it's gotten stuck in power save mode. I can change the windows power setting but that doesn't enable the better graphics card :( What should I do? I've tried restarting the computer and that does not work. I really hope I don't have to reinstall the drivers! I have windows 7 Home Premium x64 Any ideas?

• Is it possible to sync specific router settings across multiple routers?

  I recently purchased a second Linksys wireless routers set up on the other side of my home and I am wondering if it is possible to somehow sync particular settings between the two? For instance what I am really after is the "MAC Filter List". I would "like" to be able to maintain the list on both routers without having to manually type in the field values. maybe this isn't possible, or has an easy answer, but hopefully those of you who know will cut me a bit of slack. I tried to "google" the answer to this of course, but it seems any searches with the words "sync" and "router" and/or "wifi" result in pages of people having issues with synching their iOS devices over wifi. I would say that have decent amount of networking knowledge in regards to average home networks, and I imagine in larger businesses / corporations they must have a "simpler" way of maintaining things like this. Any insight to point me in the right direction will be much appreciated.

• How can I set deadline as the I/O scheduler for USB Flash devices by using udev rules?

  I have set CFQ as the default I/O scheduler. I often get bad performance when I write data into a Flash device. This is resolved if I use deadline as the I/O scheduler for USB Flash devices. I can't always change the scheduler manually, right? I think writing udev rules is a good idea. Can someone please write rules for me? I want: When I plug in a USB device, detect the type of the device. If it is a portable USB hard disk, do nothing (I think if a device has more than one partitions, it always a portable hard disk. If it is a USB Flash device, set deadline as it's scheduler.
