  hello everyone, I'm currently studying computer science at the Institute, and I have some problems with course which is named Algorithms, I've just begun to study it, but I'm already feeling, that I'm going to fail it, my problem is that while understanding different algorithms on graphs I need to keep in my mind a lot of info, and usually I can't do it, I forget some points of the exercise or can't proceed to final result, I'm very desperate about it cause I like programming very much. • Server side random selection of players

  Assuming I have a simple client-server game, where the server picks random players on a very frequent base, I was wondering what is the best way to select a random player (According to the following constraints): Solution must be high performance and highly scalable Random spread should be relatively even (meaning if I have 3 players and pick 99 times, they will all be picked 33 times more or less) Should only pick players who were active in the past X days (optional, but a big bonus) The actual DB or data model used to store players isn't an issue here, as we'll select the technology in accordance to our needs. However, high performance and scalability is (at the moment we have over 60,000 unique daily active players, and we plan on growing even more). Thanks!

• Lenovo z470 getting hot, after 12.04 install

  When I was using Windows 7 my notebook temperature was very good, it stayed very cool. After I installed 12.04, my notebook base is hot all the time, I cannot even put my hands on it for a long time. My notebook has a 2nd generation Intel i5 processor. I installed Jupiter and it shows 72 Degrees Celsius constantly. Anyone got a fix for this? I don't want to go back to windows but if I do not find any solution I will have to do it. I'd be very grateful for any help.

• Where to draw the line between front end and back end

  I was recently contracted to develop a smarty theme for an automated SOHO phone answering service. The team who had built the backend wouldn't allow me access to any of the back end nor tell me anything about it, their smarty set up, smarty plugins, data base interface api, server set-up, nothing. Nor could I have access to the server nor a beta domain, basically zero co-operation. So I set up a local server with Smarty and built the template based on what I guessed would be their best practice, commented my code like crazy, wrote all the needed javascript, css, and template files. Then I sent them packaged to the backend team and hoped for the best. With half of a project team failing to cooperate or even communicate I am now concerned that they may reply saying that everything is wrong and they may refuse to implement the new front end. I'm curious to know if others encounter this type of situation and what you may have done to protect yourselves.

  This posting is the result of a simple requirement to take an existing JAX-WS Web service,convert it to be asynchronous and call it from Oracle BPEL 11g It turned out that this is not a trivial task... BPEL has some very specific expectations about the WSDL for an asynchronous process. One approach is to develop the service starting from a WSDL document that meets BPEL's requirements. This is possible but requires considerable WSDL authoring skills. The other approach is to modify the WSDL generated by Web Service Annotations in Java code (Bottom up development) and instruct JAX-WS to use that WSDL instead of dynamically generating one from annotations. This is the approach taken in this article. This posting details how to: Modify a JAX-WS Web Service developed using a "Bottom up " approach to have an asynchronous method and callback.   At the moment my daily work as a developer requires me to have short 10-20 min breaks after every 2-3 hours. It would be nice if I could use those effectively to improve my expertise in programming or CS in general. I tried several things: Reading jokes online gets boring very soon. Trying to solve some (even the most simple) tasks from different code contests requires more time, as long as I have some idea of an algorithm the time is over. Reading a randomly picked Wikipedia-article about Computer Science: depending upon the article sometimes it requires more time and is not an easy reading for a break. So, I ended up reading StackOverflow questions and answers with most votes: that is entertaining and educative. Do you have any other suggestions?

• Configure audio on HP ENVY 4 ultrabook

  I want to configure audio for ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop. Currently the audio just does not play. If i try and plug in headphones then somewhere midway to being fully plugged in the audio plays on the headphones, I plug in further and the sound disappears. How do I get this to work? lspci | grep audio Audio device: Intel Corporation Panther Point High Definition Audio Controller My laptop is one the beats edition HP laptops, and the driver for win7 was an IDT HD audio driver. --EDIT-- The output for cat /proc/asound/card0/codec* | grep Codec is Codec: IDT 92HD91BXX Codec: Intel PantherPoint HDMI I need to get both the IDT card to work and the HDMI card to work with my TV. --EDIT-- --EDIT 2-- I have added blacklist snd-usb-audio to the end of the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf Now the sound plays from my laptop speakers only when I plug in a headphones/external speaker. Otherwise no sound. :( Please help getting everything working as it should. --EDIT 2-- Thanks

  My main objective is to create a User Interface in order to provision(change the status: activate, deactivate, or suspend) modems. I have received a SOAP developer's guide to the specific type of modem that helps out with the specific values that I need to pass into Iridium's WSDL but I cannot figure out how to do this from a webpage I have created using HTML/CSS, and PHP? I have been told by others that I need to know the portal. I have no idea what that means. I am a beginner programmer who has learned programming for this project. • Identify my terminal session that started a particular process

  I'm using Gnome on Ubuntu. I often have 8-20 terminal sessions open and in some of them I have su'd to a different user. The specific problem that caused me to write this query happens when using git status, but this is more general issue. git status will tell me I have an uncontrolled file .foo.java.swp. This means that in one of my terminal sessions I have vi open on foo.java. I need a script or tool that would tell me in which terminal session that vi is running. I can do a "ps aux | grep vi" to pretty easily find the pid of the particular vi. It would be nice if the tool highlighted the terminal on my task bar in some way. Thanks. -Sam

• Basics of drawing in 2d with OpenGL 3 shaders

  I am new to OpenGL 3 and graphics programming, and want to create some basic 2d graphics. I have the following scenario of how I might go about drawing a basic (but general) 2d rectangle. I'm not sure if this is the correct way to think about it, or, if it is, how to implement it. In my head, here's how I imagine doing it: t = make_rectangle(width, height) build general VBO, centered at 0, 0 optionally: t.set_scale(2) optionally: t.set_angle(30) t.draw_at(x, y) calculates some sort of scale/rotate/translate matrix (or matrices), passes the VBO and the matrix to a shader program Something happens to clip the world to the view visible on screen. I'm really unclear on how 4 and 5 will work. The main problem is that all the tutorials I find either: use fixed function pipeline, are for 3d, or are unclear how to do something this "simple". Can someone provide me with either a better way to think of / do this, or some concrete code detailing performing the transformations in a shader and constructing and passing the data required for this shader transformation?

  Ok can someone clarify something for me ? Let's say I want to build a website and add publicity to it so I can make money out of my work. I would use Html5 for the interface and C# with Asp.net for the background programming. I would use Visual Studio as my IDE and SQL server as a database. This is just an example on the top of my head but I woudn't know where to start for the licenses. Do I need one : For VisualStudio and SQLServer only ? For VisualStudio, SQLServer and pay some kind of rights for Asp.net ? The whole package.. Both VisualStudio, SQlServer plus rights for Asp.net AND C# ? I know this question is a little vague but I really don't know where to start and the opinion of someone with experience int this might give me just the help I need to get started.

• How to modify Dreamweaver's SpryMenuBar.js to send a msgbox on what menu was clicked?

  I have a simple HTML webpage made in Dreamweaver with a SpryMenuBar. When I click on a menu item, I want to send a pop up message box that says which menu item was clicked. (This is not really my objective but once I can learn to hook into the spry java script with a mouse click listener I can try to do what I am really after.) The problem is for some reason I can't seem to get started with this seemingly simple task. Does anybody know how to revise the SpryMenuBar.js to make a msgbox showing the item that was clicked? For example if I click a menu that say's 'Contact us', I wan't to throw a message box that says "You pressed, Contact us". Note: My final objective is to actually call another function that changes text in the center of my page, depending on what menu item was clicked.

• I Need a recommendation for a CMS application with ECommerce

  Does anyone have any recommendation for an open source solution for a robust CMS application that has a fully featured ECommerce module? I have been looking into Drupal with Ubercart -- but it looks like Ubercart is not fully up to speed with Drupal 7, and the other modules for Ecommerce don't look as robust. The CMS system should support CMIS as both client and server, and be able to run in a cloud computing environment. The system could be written in any standard web programming language, although Java would be my preference. I'm posting this question here because it seems that all CMS systems provide ECommerce as an afterthought, rather than a core feature.

  Hey guys, I am a graduate CS student (Data mining and machine learning) and have a good exposure to core JAVA (3 years). I have read up a bunch of stuff on Design patterns J2EE Web services( soap and rest) spring and hibernate Java Concurrency - advanced features like Task and Executors. I would now like to do a project combining this stuff (over my free time of corse) to get a better understanding of these things and to kind of make an end to end software (to learn the best design principles etc + svn, maven). Any good project ideas would be really appreciated. I just wanna build this stuff to learn so I dont really mind re-inventing the wheel. Also, anything related to data mining would be an added bonus (fits with my research) but absolutly not necesary (since this project is more to learn to do large scale software developement)

• How do I find the closest points(thereby forming a polygon) enclosing a particular point?(see image)

  I am working with a game engine, and my task is to add code for simulating fracture of rigid meshes. Right now I'm only working on breaking a cube. I am using Voronoi's algorithm to make a (realistic)fractured shard and I am using the half-plane method to generate a voronoi cell. Now the way I do this is for every seed point, I make planes that are perpendicular bisector planes(the straight black lines in the image) with rest of the seed points and I calculate the intersections of all these planes to give me distinct points(all the orange dots). I've gotten this far. Out of all these calculated intersection points, I only need the ones that are closest and enclosing the seed point(the points encircled in red) and I need to discard all the rest. Information that I have : 1) Plane equations of all planes(defined by normalized normal vectors and their distance from origin) 2) Points of intersection(that I've calculated) Can anybody help me find out how I can find the points encircled in red? • Are developers expected to have skills of business analysts?

  Our business analyst has left the team. We are now expected to do the work which was previously done by the business analyst, and the management thinks that a task which is done in three months by a business analyst can be done in one month by a developer. My experience is in programming only, and I'm not familiar to the business intelligence tools. To me this seems like maybe an unfair comparison or expectation, and might even trivialize the role of a business analyst. Has anyone else encountered this situation? How to deal with it?

  In comparison with an open source license and requesting donations, is a free-for-open-source-projects (or free for non-commercial developers) closed source and otherwise commercial project likely to get more license fees? Or just to alienate potential users? Assume the project has value to programmers - I'm looking for generalizations here, though specific examples comparing existing projects will be very interesting. What I have in mind involves code generating programming utilities. And one issue I can think of, either way, is a near total inability to enforce any license restrictions. After all, I can't go around the internet demanding that everyone show me their source code just in case!
