  Hi all, I'm working for quite a while now with LINQ. However, it remained still a bit of a mystery what are the real differences between the mentioned flavours of LINQ. The successful answer will contain a short differentiation between them. What is the main goal if it, what is the benefit, and is there a performance impact... P.S. • PreferenceActivity not showing twice on android

  Hello there, i've a PreferenceActivity which works perfectly the first time i launch it. But if i close it ( with the back button ) and then i re open it ( through a menu click in the main activity ) then i get a black screen. There is no preferences at all.. I can't figure it out why it should not working. It seems all the code is being called normally as the working one but no preferences are showing on the screen. Did someone had the same behaviour ?

  Trying to connect to 4D Database. PHPINFO says PDO is installed etc etc... Testing on localhost MAMP system. • How to signal a buffer full state between posix threads

  Hi I have two threads, the main thread 'A' is responsible for message handling between a number of processes. When thread A gets a buffer full message, it should inform thread B and pass a pointer to the buffer which thread B will then process. When thread B has finished it should inform thread A that it has finished. How do I go about implementing this using posix threads using C on linux. I have looked at conditional variables, is this the way to go? . I'm not experienced in multi threaded programming and would like some advice on the best avenue to take. Thanks

• speed up the speed of a sql query to mysql?

  in my mysql database i've got the geonames database, containing all countries, states and cities. i am using this to create a cascading menu so the user could select where he is from: country - state - county - city. but the main problem is that the query will search through all the 7 millions rows in that table each time i want to get the list of children rows, and that is taking a while 10-15 seconds. i wonder how i could speed this up: caching? table views? reorganizing table structure somehow? and most important, how do i do these things? are there good tutorials you could link to me? i appreciate all help and feedback discussing smart ways of handling this issue!

  On the iPhone, I would like to do some operations on an image in a separate thread. Rather than dealing with semiphores, locking, etc., I'd like to use the 'One Object, One Thread' method of safely writing this concurrent operation. I'm not sure what is the correct way to copy my object into a new thread so that the object is not accessed in the main thread. Do I use the 'copy' method? Is it possible to have a duplicate the file/db and write a logic switch to use the backup file/db if the main file is in use? Which language is best for the type of structure? • Backing up locally modified and new source files

  I'm wondering how other programmers are backing up changes that are not under source control yet, be it new files or modified ones. I'm mostly referring to medium size jobs - hardly worth the effort of making a private branch, but taking more than a day to complete. This is not a vendor-specific question - I'd like to see if various products have different solutions to the problem. I'd appreciate answers referring to SVN and distributed SCCs, though. I'm mostly wondering about that latters (Mercurial, GIT etc.) - it's great that you have your own local repo, but do you back it up on a regular basis along with your source files? Note - I'm not asking about a general backup strategy. For that, we have IT. I'm seeking the best way to keep locally modified stuff backed-up before they are checked back into the main repo.

• How can I have a smooth animated move between 2 Google Maps locations?

  When clicking from one marker to another in Google Maps, the map screen animates the move smoothly if both markers are within them initial map view but jumps if one of the markers is off screen. I'm trying to set up a map which has several locations within the main map area but has one which is 'off screen'. I have a signpost icon to the more distant location within the initial map area which I want to smoothly scroll to the off screen location when clicked (so as to give a better sense of it's relative location). I can't find anything in the Maps API which would let me do this however. I could zoom out, move and then zoom in again but this looks a bit jarring. Am I missing something in the API, or does anyone have any suggestions?

  In cmd.exe, I can execute the command "copy c:\hello.txt c:\hello2.txt" and it worked fine. But in my C program, I ran this piece of code and got the following error: #include <iostream> using namespace std; int main() { system("copy c:\hello.txt c:\hello2.txt"); system("pause"); return 0; } Output: The system cannot find the file specified. Anybody know what is going on here?

  What does block in ruby mean? It looks similar with smalltalk, but you can't send messages to it. For example, in smalltalk: [:x | x + 3] value: 3 returns 6. But in ruby: {|x| x + 3}.call 3 will cause SyntaxError. Well, you can pass messages to lambda in ruby, though: irb(main):025:0> ->(x){x+3}.call 3 => 6 So in ruby, block is not a block, but lambda is a block? Is this true? I mean, are there any differences between ruby lambda and smalltalk block? If this is true, then what is ruby block?

• Using Timer only once

  Hi, I want to use a timer only once, at 1 second after the initialization of my main form. I thought the following would have a message box saying "Hello World" just once, but actually a new message box says "Hello World" every one second. Why so? I had put t.Stop() in the tick event. Also, do I need to dispose the timer somehow to avoid memory leakage? The thing is that I want the main thread to wait for the animation thread to finish and then to continue. I searched around, read a little bit and decided to use the join() method. It perfectly waits for the thread to finish but I doesn't animate correctly. The repaint() method gets called 2 times instead of nine. I think maybe the problem is because I used singletons. • curl multiple requests cookie issue

  I'm using curl multi API for multiple curl requests. first I'm using a single request to login to a site and save the cookie file. then I'm using the curl multi API to get some data from that site. The problem I'm facing is that from some reason the cookie file does not get read and I'm redirecting to the main login page.   I have a standalone gwt project with RPC built with Maven. I also have java servlet 3.0 project. Both the servlet and gwt projects have war packaging but I want to have only one war file so I changed the packaging of the gwt project to jar and included it in my servlet project. Now I have a problem understanding how to wire everything together. Do I need to migrate gwt project's web.xml into the main project web.xml file ?   To be specific let me illustrate the question with Spring http-remoting example.
