• Any "Magic Tricks" For Getting Data Back After Windows 7 Install

  My old man installed Windows 7 without making a proper backup, and now realizes he left behind some important data. He did a true "clean install", so there is no Windows.old folder in the root directory. However, I believe the format performed on the hard drive was only a quick format, so I am hoping there is some chance at data recovery. I took his hard drive out, and have spent a majority of the weekend researching data recovery options. I paid $70 for the GetDataBack software, but have had little success with it. I can see all of the files I want to restore, however they appear corrupt when I try to open them. With that all being said, does anyone know of a viable way to recover some of this data, or is it a lost cause all together?

• Is there a rule of thumb for RAM upgrades?

  I'm having a hard time figuring out whether or not a certain laptop/computer's RAM can be upgraded or not. Is there a rule of thumb that determines how much max RAM one could add to a system without looking it up via external websites? A little bit of a background information: I work in computer sales at a computer electronics store, so it is virtually impossible for me to install any sort of software that would detect computer specs, and I get a lot of customers who wonder what laptop/desktop RAM upgrades usually are. Is there a certain rule that adding more RAM entails? Does it make a difference if it's a 32-bit or 64-bit machine? OS?

• Creating an office network and monitoring all activity without a proxy

  We are setting up our office network and would like to track all the websites visited by our employees. However, we would not like to use any proxy based solutions. Our work is highly dependent on applications in which you cannot configure a proxy. Hence, the approach we would like to follow is setting up a router inside a computer (something like this : http://www.techrepublic.com/article/configure-windows-server-2003-to-act-as-a-router/5844624) This will also allow us to attach multiple ethernet cards and have redundancy in internet connectivity with complete abstraction from the user about which connection is being used. But most importantly, since all the traffic will be going through the computer (configured as a router) I assume there will be a way to run packet analysis on all the request / responses being made. For example, list all the FTP servers connected to (port 21), give a graph of all the URLs visited per day by frequency. Is there already a software which does this ? Or is it possible to build something like this ?

• Batch convert pdf's t searchable pdf's

  I'm looking for a way to convert thousands of pdf's to searchable pdf's. I've used a program called "PDF Create Assistant" that came with Nuance's ecopy software. However, you can't select a folder, you have to go into each sub folder, select the files to convert, and then go to the next folder. What is another way to convert a large number of pdf's to searchable pdf's? Haven't had any suggestions. Surely there must be a way to batch convert pdf's(?).

• IIS exclude specific host?

  I have an IIS server running several websites. It is stationed behind an ISA server of which I do not have access. But I do have all of the defined websites (on port 80) routed to my server. So I want to take down one website, say it's foo.bar.com and in its place setup a LAMP server instead using a VM software. It needs to run alongside all the existing websites and it should not interfere with them. I have full control over my server, but not the ISA. Is this possible? If so, how? The OS is Win Server 2003 Standard with IIS6

• Can a malicious hacker share Linux distributions which trust bad root certificates?

  Suppose a hacker launches a new Linux distro with firefox provided with it. Now a browser contains the certificates of the root certification authorities of PKI. Because firefox is a free browser anyone can package it with fake root certificates. Thus a fake root certificate would contain a the certification authority that is not actually certified. Can this be used to authenticate some websites. How? Many existing linux distros are mirrored by people. They can easily package software containing certificates that can lead to such attacks. Is the above possible? Has such an attack taken place before?

• Google Mini Search Does Not Return Results

  I pointed the Google Mini to a small intranet site. (8 simple HTML pages) It crawls all 8 pages just fine, but a simple search with a word clearing contained within the body of the pages returns 0 results. If I enter a search like this: "site:mysite.net", it returns all 8 pages. If I enter a search with a word contained in a Url, it will return that Url. In the search results, only the Url is returned in the list items. There is no Page Title or blurb text you normally see in Google search results. It's as if it is only indexing the Url and skipping the page title, body, etc. I have an old software Version 3.4.14, but I wanted to try to get this thing working without an upgrade. It worked before for another domain, so why would it not work now. Any ideas?

• How can I sync Nokia smartphones' calendars with Snow Leopard Server's iCal Server?

  I've just installed and configured a Mac Mini Server for a customer who wanted to stop using Google Apps for their email. The plan was to also use the new server's calendaring service but we've hit a small snag: the staff all use iCal on Macs and Nokia E71s and there doesn't seem to be a way to use a single calendar for each person that syncs with both. iSync/iCal doesn't appear to allow their manually-synced phones to sync with the CalDAV calendars on the server, only with local calendars on their Macs. Nor does Nokia's organiser software support CalDAV but rather SyncML for live networked syncing. I was wondering if there's a plugin for iCal Server that would provide a bridge to a SyncML service I could run on the server... or anything else that would work (preferably FOSS)!

• Why are we as an industry not more technically critical of our peers? [closed]

  For example: I still see people in 2011 writing blog posts and tutorials that promote setting the Java CLASSPATH at the OS environment level. I see people writing C and C++ tutorials dated 2009 and newer and the first lines of code are void main(). These are examples, I am not looking for specific answers to the above questions, but to why the culture of accepting sub-par knowledge in the industry is so rampant. I see people posting these same type of empirically wrong suggestions as answers on www.stackoverflow.com and they get lots of up votes and practically no down votes! The ones that get lots of down votes are usually from answering a question that wasn't asked because of lack of reading for comprehension skills, and not incorrect answers per se. Is our industry that ignorant as a whole, I can understand the internet in general being lazy, apathetic and un-informed but our industry should be more on top of things like this and way more critical of people that are promoting bad habits and out-dated techniques and information. If we are really an engineering discipline, why aren't people held to a higher standard as they are in other engineering disciplines? I want to know why people accept bad advice, poor practices as the norm and are not more critical of their peers in the software industry.?

  I downloaded java SDK from Google App Engine. I tried running appcfg.cmd from command prompt. But it gives this error. Error opening registry key 'Software\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment' Error: could not find java.dll Error: could not find Java 2 Runtime Environment. All i want to do with Google App Engine is to set up cron jobs with 1 minute frequency. I don't want to make any application in Google App Engine. I just want the cron job set up. Is there any way to set up cron job in Google App Engine without using the java SDK ???

• Looking for a reliable web provider that supports ASP.NET? Shared LAMP account a plus.

  My title is probably not very clear but here's the deal. I'm a software engineer with experience in many languages but my current focus is Windows/Web applications using C# and .NET. I'm currently running a personal blog using WordPress and love it. I need to setup a website for my consulting company and, while I enjoy the canned benefits of a CMS like WordPress, would like to build a custom ASP.NET site. Either way my current LAMP host is not secure so I'm looking to switch and looking for a reliable alternative. My ultimate wish list of requirements would be a cost-effective (currently spending ~$120/yr for web+domain hosting) host that would allow me to deploy my own ASP.NET code and host a WordPress blog (IIS w/ PHP to external MySQL or separate LAMP site). Thanks in advance for your recommendations (Google is not good for this type of search :-D) Edit: I'm fine if I have to ditch WordPress. Really I'm just looking for a good ASP.NET host, the WordPress compatibility would be a plus.

• How do you stay productive when dealing with extremely badly written code?

  I don't have much experience in working in software industry, being self-taught and having participated in open source before deciding to take a job. Now that I work for money, I also have to deal with some unpleasant stuff, which is normal of course. Recently I was assigned to add logging to a large SharePoint project which is written by some programmer who obviously was learning to code on the job. After 2 years of collaboration, the client switched to our company, but the damage was done, and now somehow I need to maintain this code. Not that the code was too hard to read. Despite problems - each project has one class with several copy-pasted methods, enormous if nestings, Systems Hungarian, undisposed connections — it's still readable. However, I found myself absolutely unproductive despite working on something as simple as adding logging. Basically, I just need to go through the code step by step and add some trace calls. However, the idiocy of the code is so annoying that I get tired within 10 minutes of starting. In the beginning, I used to add using constructs, reduce nesting by reversing if's, rename the variables to readable names—but the project is large, and eventually I gave up. I know this is not the task I should be doing, but at least reducing the mess gave me some kind of psychological reward so I could keep going. Now the trick stopped working, and I still have 60% of my work to do. I started having headaches after work, and I no longer get the feeling of satisfaction I used to get - which would usually allow me to code for 10 hours straight and still feel fresh. This is not just one big rant, for I really do have an actual question: Is there a way to stay productive and not to fight the windmills? Is there some kind of psychological trick to stay focused on the task, instead of thinking “How stupid is that?” each time I see another clever trick by the previous programmer? The problem with adding logging is that I actually have to understand what the code does, and doing so hurts my brain in an unpleasant fashion.

  This is a question that we discuss quite often at Edentity.  It’s one of those things, kind of like “web services” where the terminology has been thrown around by a ton of people and means a lot of different things. Here’s my favorite diagram so far, which is a visual breakdown of the material presented here by NIST, visualized by the folks at Cloud Security Alliance.     What I like about this diagram is that is shows several different ways that we can differentiate our definitions of cloud computing, from the essential characteristics, or which “Broad Network Access" and “On-Demand Self-Service” (which often are used on their own to define cloud computing) are but a couple of things that help make something “cloud”. The most important section from my point of view is the middle one – the Service Models.  This represents the different ways that cloud computing can be exposed from the ground up.  It can be an Infrastructure, a Platform or a piece of Software that an end user interacts with. • Slow to sync music files?

  I have created a folder in the Ubuntu One sync folder and called it music. I have added various albums and the folder has started to sync. However the files were added back in October and still only the folders have synced and no music files. I tested this service before and added a single music file directly into the Ubuntu One folder (no sub folders) and within a few days it synced, however it seems anything in sub folders seem to stall or take a very long time. My ubuntu One program always says syncing and the progression bar creeps, but still no files synced. I know there are issues with speed but a month and going to sync? I recently tested the same files with Dropbox and it took 9 hours. I have port forwarded the https (443) port both in the software firewall and in my router, I tried disabling both firewalls too, either way it makes no difference. I have also tried both from home and the office on different Ubuntu systems. Is there anything anyone has done to improve this service? I am trying to integrate Ubuntu One service into the office to share project files but the syncing is taking to long. I am using the latest Ubuntu 10.10 (fully updated, fresh install), I love Ubuntu and wish to continue to support it anyway I can, so a solution would be good :-) Any help would be appreciated. • Nested RDP and ILO sessions, latency and keystroke repetition.

  I'm working on a remote server installation entirely through ILO. Due to the software application and environment, my access is restricted to a Windows server that I must access through RDP. Going from that system to the target server is accomplished via HP ILO3. I'm trying to run a CentOS installation in an environment where I can't use a kickstart. I'm doing this via text mode, but the keystrokes are repeating randomly and it's difficult to select the proper installation options. I'm doing this using Microsoft's native RDP client (on Mac and Windows). I've also noticed this before when running installations or doing remote work in nested sessions. Is there a nice fix for this, or it it simply a function of the protocol?

• Hardware compatibility on H97 chipset/hardware support

  I am aware that there is documentation about compatibility but it is way out dated. I am also aware that there is a hardware compatibility page on Ubuntu website, but that one is focused on the whole box rather than a single piece of hardware. I have some experience with Linux OS, and some experience playing Ubuntu Server in a virtual machine, but never worked on a machine that lives in the real internet. I am building a home server with an Intel H97 chipset motherboard. I have looked at several models and none of them has Linux in the supported OS category. I have the experience of installing Ubuntu Desktop 14.04 on my 4-years-old lap top, and except for some system errors on start up, there is not too much I can complain about, so I guess I should be fine. However, this time I am going to install Ubuntu Server 14.04 on a relatively new piece of hardware(I went to http://linux-drivers.org/ but found nothing really helpful). For example the ASUS motherboard has M.2 socket and Intel LAN I218V chip, the Gigabyte motherboard has two LAN chips(Intel LAN WGI217V and ATHEROS AR8161-BL3A-R). So I really want to make sure everything will work. Usually I would just trust Ubuntu and buy all hardware I need, but basing on my past experience with the Ubuntu Desktop version on my lap top, I am not so convinced. There is an easily noticeable difference: when the system is idle, the fan runs much more frequently and longer under Ubuntu. This leads to my suspicion that generally hardware will have worse support for Ubuntu, which is no surprising at all but enough for me to put this post here. • Create 8.3 name for an existing directory

  I have a machine that initially had 8.3 filename creation disabled. However, this was causing issues with some legacy software, so it was re-enabled. I'm wondering if it's possible to go back and "add" 8.3 filenames to certain existing directories. For example, say I have a directory named "C:\name with spaces" and I get the following output when I run "dir /x": C:\>dir /x Volume in drive C has no label. Volume Serial Number is 6873-65B8 Directory of C:\ 04/09/2010 01:57 PM <DIR> name with spaces ... I'd like to somehow add an 8.3 name for the directory without recreating it, and then get the following: C:\>dir /x Volume in drive C has no label. Volume Serial Number is 6873-65B8 Directory of C:\ 04/09/2010 01:57 PM <DIR> NAMEWI~1 name with spaces ... I tried the 'rename' command but it didn't do the trick.

• Bare bones backup / restore for single Win 2003 server

  I have a single server, Win 2003 Server and would like to setup a system to be able to perform a bare bones restore if needed. (just plug in a cd or smth and get everything back). Ideally the backup could be performed while the is powered so that i don't have to support downtime during this, and in order to restore i would reboot and use some sort of liveCD Any ideas on this, software and all... ? (backup will be done to a remote FTP server with plenty of bandwidth).
