• Can I become a Game Designer? [on hold]

  This is my first time posting something on a forum in 4 years. I am posting this because I want to adjust my expectations and goals regarding game design. I am in college in Morocco (Al Akhawayn university). just started my junior year. I am a communications major (school of humanities) and a gender studies minor. I want to become a video game designer. It is the only career that I am interested in. I have been playing ever since I was 5 and haven't stopped yet. Currently I don't have any noteworthy skills to become a designer. I don't know how to program (don't really have the patience for it) and I can't draw to save my life. I haven't tried visual software like MAYA or MAX so I can't comment on graphic design. So I basically want to know whether my current education is capable of helping me reach my goal. If not then should I take a master's in game design (in the U.S?) or switch my minor to computer science? I am sorry that this post is long! I look forward to hearing your advice!

• Double audio cd ripping weirdness

  Since I installed Ubuntu 12.04, Rhythmbox, Banshee and Sound Juicer have started acting weird around double cd's, and specifically, cd #2 of said double cd. Sometimes, they will show the information of cd #1. Track names, durations, and even count are incorrect. Sometimes, they will first show the tracks for cd #1, then continue onto cd #2 if cd #2 has more tracks than #1. Sound Juicer seems to be unable to find any track durations at all, even for single cd's. Obviously, this is a pain when I'm trying to rip double cd's. And I have a fair number of them, which I want to rip. This happens on both my machines (a slightly aging iMac, and a 1-year-old Sony Vaio). However, on previous versions of Ubuntu, this never happened. All on the same machines. So I suspect 12.04 is using a different lib for extracting audio cd data. Just for kicks, I tried with Linux Mint 13, and there it works correctly, even though it claims to be based on Ubuntu 12.04 and therefore should be using (partially) the same software. So if the Mint guys can fix it, I should be able to do it too, right? So, my question: what changed in 12.04 that could cause this? And more importantly: what can I do to fix it?

• MyMessageBox for Phone and Store apps

  I am sharing a class I use for both my Windows Phone 8 and Windows Store app projects. Background and my requirements For my Windows Phone 7 projects two years ago I wrote an improved custom MessageBox class that preserves the well-known MessageBox interface while offering several advantages. I documented those and shared it for Windows Phone 7 here: Guide.BeginShowMessageBox wrapper. Aside: With Windows Phone 8 we can now use the async/await feature out of the box without taking a dependency on additional/separate pre-release software. As I try to share code between my existing Windows Phone 8 projects and my new Windows Store app projects, I wanted to preserve the calling code, so I decided to wrap the WinRT MessageDialog class in a custom class to present the same MessageBox interface to my codebase. BUT. The MessageDialog class has to be called with the await keyword preceding it (which as we know is viral) which means all my calling code will also have to use await. Which in turn means that I have to change my MessageBox wrapper to present the same interface to the shared codebase and be callable with await… for both Windows Phone projects and Windows Store app projects. Solution The solution is what the requirements above outlined: a single code file with a MessageBox class that you can drop in your project, regardless of whether it targets Windows Phone 8, or Windows 8 Store apps or both. • Monitoring System for the cloud?

  I need a monitoring system, much like ganglia / nagios that is build for the cloud. I need it to support : Adding / removing nodes dynamically. (Node shuts down, dose not imply node failure...) Dynamic node based categorization, meaning node can identify them self as being part of group X (ganglia gets this almost right, but lacks the dynamic part...) Does not require multicast support (generally not allowed in cloud based setups) Plugins for recent cool stuff such as Hadoop, Cassandra, Mongo would be cool. More features include: External API, web interface and co. I've looked at Ganglia, munin and they both seem be almost there (but not exactly). I would also go for reasonably priced Software as Service solution. I'm currently doing research, so Suggestions are highly appreciated. Thank you, Maxim

  I have two separate internet connections, one through WiFi and other Wired. However, generally I have observed that Windows try to use only one ( mostly faster one/ Or Wired by preference - I am not sure). Is there a way I can take advantage of having both ? For example I can have my web browser use the wired one and my torrent software use the Wifi One. • Does the advanced format tool bundled by manufacturers actually do anything which mkntfs doesn't?

  I recently bought a new drive (specifically, a 2TB Samsung Spinpoint) that says on the label that it supports advanced format, and that I should download the tool from their site. Unless I'm missing something, mkntfs has always had its maximum sector size at 4096b: -s, --sector-size BYTES Specify the size of sectors in bytes. Valid sector size values are 256, 512, 1024, 2048 and 4096 bytes per sector. If omitted, mkntfs attempts to determine the sector-size automatically and if that fails a default of 512 bytes per sector is used. Will this tool on Samsung's site do anything other than format the drive in the same way doing mkntfs -s 4K /dev/sdb1 would do? To be specific, I'm intending to use this drive on a machine that will primarily run Windows XP, but I'd rather boot into Linux/BSD and format the disk manually than have bloated software. I do want to have the new AF style sectors though -- that's essential. So if I did the command above, would it have exactly the same effect as using the advanced format tool?

• How does a one-man developer do its games' sounds?

  Before anything, that's not a "oh, where can I find resources?" question. Well, I've been curious about one thing in the indie games industry. For the development of the game, such tasks like game design, art, sketches, code programming and etc can be easily done by just one person. You can just take up a paper and pencil and you're a game designer. You can just take software like Photoshop or Paint and you're an artist, a scanner and you're a sketcher, a compiler and you're a programmer. For sound it's different. You may tell me: Well, follow the line, take a lot of instruments and record it. But all we know that things don't work this way. I can list up some changes for us: External noises are a big problem, sound effects can't be made with instruments, it can't sound like a recorded and clipped sound. Well I can imagine how they do this in large companies, with such big studios and etc. But to summarise, my question is: What's the best way for a one-man indie to do all its sound? Does he have to synthesize everything? Record and buy some crazy program for editing sounds?

• Daily Blog Archives and Duplicate Content

  A few weeks back I realised that my blog software was creating daily post archives. Which basically resulted in duplicate content especially if I only had one post a day. The situation is something like this: www.sitename.com/blog/archives/2013/06/01 - daily archive for 1 June 2013 www.sitename.com/blog/archives/2013/06/my-post-name.html So, here we have two pages that are basically identical except the daily archive has some meaningless title like "Daily Archive for 1 June 2003". And I have no control over which content Google decides is the primary content. It's quite possible (and likely) that the daily archive could be the "primary" content and the actual post itself the "duplicate". Once I realised it was doing this I modified the daily archive template to include <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> Here we are a few weeks later and I still see some daily archives coming up in Google search results. I realise some of those deep pages might not be crawled yet but I am worried that the original post (which should be the PRIMARY content) has been marked duplicate content by Google. Now I've no indexed the daily archives I might end up with no indexed content AND the original articles still flagged as duplicates. And nothing will show up in search at all. Have I screwed myself here or is there a way out?

• syslog-ng fails to log on lxc host

  we are running CentOS 6 servers with multiple lxc-containers. For system logging we are using syslog-ng. After a while the syslog-ng daemon stops logging messages, but the daemon keeps running. This happens on the host and inside the containers (where another syslog-ng is running) as well. We could not find any patterns for the failure yet but we assume that it has something to do with lxc, because we don't have these problems on other hosts. We have the suspicion that these problems occur when more than on lxc-container is running and that only "new" processes can not log. We are running the following software versions: CentOS-Linux 6.4/6.5 lxc-0.7.5 syslog-ng-3.2.5 Do you have any ideas? Best regards trademesh

• Career opportunities for mid-20 .Net developer

  Recently, I have moved to Toronto and started exploring career opportunities here. My first impressions about .net developer/architect career are really controversial. Here options that comes to my mind right now: Grow as a developer, lead and solution architect in large and well-known company, like Logitech or IBM. Doing .net development medium size (10-30) software shops Joining some start-up guys First one, seems very bureaucratic with kills all programming fun, that is such valuable to me. And there is not a lot of start ups, that are based on MS technology stack. Good mid-size company seems like a best fit to me, since I can have a lot of fun, doing new projects. Previously I have been working at large (5000+) outsourcing provider as a .Net developer. I was kind of a 'vanilla' time, because our team were always doing massive scale projects from scratch, on latest .Net stack. I would really appreciate if you share pros and cons of path, that you have chosen and what you value most in your current project. • When creating an library published on CodePlex, how "bad" would it be for the unit-test projects to rely on commercial products?

  I have started a project on CodePlex for a WebDAV server implementation for .NET, so that I can host a WebDAV server in my own programs. This is both a learning/research project (WebDAV + server portion) as well as a project I think I can have much fun with, both in terms of making it and using it. However, I see a need to do mocking of types here in order to unit-testing properly. For instance, I will be relying on HttpListener for the web server portion of the WebDAV server, and since this type has no interface, and is sealed, I cannot easily make mocks or stubs out of it. Unless I use something like TypeMock. So if I used TypeMock in the unit-test projects on this library, how bad would this be for potential users? The projects are made in C# 3.5 for .NET 3.5 and 4.0, and the project files was created with Visual Studio 2010 Professional. The actual class libraries you would end up referencing in your software would of course not be encumbered with anything remotely like this, only the unit-test libraries. What's your thoughts on this? As an example, I have in my old code-base, which is private, the ability to just initiate a WebDAV server with just this: var server = new WebDAVServer(); This constructs, and owns, a HttpListener instance internally, and I would like to verify through unit-tests that if I dispose of this server object, the internal listener is disposed of. If, on the other hand, I use the overload where I hand it a listener object, this object should not be disposed of. Short of exposing the internal listener object to the outside world, something I'm a bit loath to do, how can I in a good way ensure that the object was disposed of? With TypeMock I can mock away parts of this object even though it isn't accessed through interfaces. The alternative would be for me to wrap everything in wrapper classes, where I have complete control.

• Difference between two kinds of Bing URL Referers

  Most of the referral URLS that I get from Bing have the following syntax: http://www.bing.com/search?q=keywords+keywords&[some other variables] However I just noticed that maybe 10-20% of them are coming in like this: http://www.bing.com/url?source=search&[some other variables]&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.example.com/user-landing-page-on-my-site&yrktarget=_top&q=keywords+keywords&[some other variables] The first syntax gives me the keywords the user typed in, but the second actually gives me the keywords the user typed in and their landing page on my site. I was originally unaware of this second kind altogether because I have a customized referral report that filters out URLs containing my domain. But now that I noticed them I want to know why they occur to see if I can get more to occur this way because the second syntax contains more valuable information. If I go to one of the first URLs, it gives me a typical Bing query page. The second URLs seem to just redirect me to the Bing home page. I'm not sure if it has to do with the kind of search being performed (I also get a few http://www.bing.com/shopping/search?q= referers) or some other metric. Does anyone know what causes some referral URLs from Bing to have the /search?q syntax and others to have the /url?source syntax? P.S. I have verified that I am getting both kinds of URLs from non-advertising clicks. P.P.S. I am not talking about data in Google Analytics or similar software but the raw $_SERVER['HTTP_REFERER'] value coming from the client's original request.

• Non-Profit Technololgy for Non-Profits?

  I've been looking around for a way to give back to the community, but I haven't found my right fit yet, so an idea came to mind: A non-profit technology "company" that targets non-profits. Do these exist? I've been doing some google searches and can only find software that is targeted for non-profits that is created by for-profit companies or that charges what I believe to be an outrages amount, conferences directed towards non-profits and technology they may use -- or articles complaining about the digital divide and how non-profits view technology as key but dont have the funds or the knowledge to employ it. Pseudo "Business Model" An open source 501(3)(c) organization that targets directly targets non-profits to fill the "digital divide." Most services would be free and consulting fees would be charged for customization. Donations would be accepted and government grants would be sought after. This would enable non-profits to keep pace with the for-profits in the technology sector, but at little to no cost. Perhaps the first "industry" to be targeted would be those that fill key social needs like unemployment, or food banks.

• Watch videos from a remote computer on the LAN on ubuntu

  I want to watch the videos on a friends computer on the LAN without having to download it. Both of us are running ubuntu. Now one way is to ssh to his computer, cd to the directory where the video is and run the falling command: cat video.avi | ssh me@mycomputer mplayer - This works. However the problem is that I cannot seek inside the video as in can't go forward or backward in it. Is there a method by which I can watch the videos and also seek in them ? I can install any software on his comp and my comp to aid this process. I have root level access on both computers. Any suggestions ?

• Sync KeePassX with KeePass2

  Simply put: In Ubuntu I am using KeePassX and in Windows KeePass2. In am not able to export/import passwords from one to another. I would prefer to use the same database, but I don't really know how. If there is no possibility to sync the 2, can you recommend another password vault, which is able to sync passwords from 2 OS, using a shared DB. Thanks I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and Win 7. Edit: I have noticed that KeePass2 is available in the Software Center, so I have installed it, and I can successfully open my Win7 database. Now I will migrate my KeePassX passwords. I am seeing now a huge difference in the looks. While KeePassX doesn't exactly have Ubuntu like look&feel, it's 100 times more elegant than the interface KeePass2 comes with. • Thread safe GUI programming

  I have been programming Java with swing for a couple of years now, and always accepted that GUI interactions had to happen on the Event Dispatch Thread. I recently started to use GTK+ for C applications and was unsurprised to find that GUI interactions had to be called on gtk_main. Similarly, I looked at SWT to see in what ways it was different to Swing and to see if it was worth using, and again found the UI thread idea, and I am sure that these 3 are not the only toolkits to use this model. I was wondering if there is a reason for this design i.e. what is the reason for keeping UI modifications isolated to a single thread. I can see why some modifications may cause issues (like modifying a list while it is being drawn), but I do not see why these concerns pass on to the user of the API. Is there a limit imposed by an operating system? Is there a good reason these concerns are not 'hidden' (i.e. some form of synchronization that is invisible to the user)? Is there any (even purely conceptual) way of creating a thread safe graphics library, or is such a thing actually impossible? I found this http://blogs.operationaldynamics.com/andrew/software/gnome-desktop/gtk-thread-awareness which seems to describe GTK differently to how I understood it (although my understanding was the same as many people's) How does this differ to other toolkits? Is it possible to implement this in Swing (as the EDT model does not actually prevent access from other threads, it just often leads to Exceptions)

• Cannot boot computer, help please :(

  Ok so here is more descriptions, I REALLY NEED HELP! I installed Ubuntu on a disk (unsure of v. I can't check.. Computer is broke :/ ) I then burned the disk I restarted computer pressed f12 blah blah it came up, I pressed enter for English, I plugged an Ethernet card in for better connection, and then started the installation.... I did the basics, and I entered a host name, and a user name and pass all that, when it came to partition page, I presse enter for no and then it went back to the installation page, I pressed install again, and it brought me back, so I selected yes , it loaded an it asked what software to instal I selected sh ( it was first option and I didn't know which to do ) so after everything finished loading, my disk was ejected the process finish, I run my computer and it opens up in log in page on cmd script I didn't know it, so I ran disk again makin a user and pass to remember.... Going back to login thing I logged in, and all it did was say my username... I didn't know what to do from there, I looked online found nothing but grub stuff, so I went to "Advanced Ubuntu options" and then "(Recovery Mode) and went to update grub... In middle o loading it asked to continue (Y/n) I typed Y and it finished, it went back to the options located in (Recovery Mode) and I closed it, and it loaded... And then showed up in another script screen, saying a paragraph on top, and on left side ( where login: would be located etc. ) it says "Grub" and I don't know what to type, if I turn off computer and turn back on it just goes straight to that again... PLEASE HELP:(

• Windows 7 resizes desktop when I switch of a monitor

  I have a workstation with two monitors and the desktop extended over them. I have a lot of applications open (generally maximized), and I have a personal preference which application is on which monitor (let's say editors on the right, data retrieval and display on the left). I have recently upgraded to a workstation with Windows 7 and when I power off a monitor (typically when going home at the end of the day), the desktop-expand-over-monitors disables and all applications are switched to the main monitor. (Also the taskbar I keep on the left resizes to about one icon's width.) This is highly annoying, since I now spend the first minutes of work each day switching the applications back that were on the monitor on the right. Is there a way to prevent this? (It says no here.) Is there software I could install that can prevent this?

• Cam being used by another application

  On my laptop doesn't work any camera. I get error: "Camera being used by another application"". I don`t known which program using it. I tried use software like "SplitCam" or "ManyCam". Also I reinstalled K-lite codec to newest, but still getting this error. I get the same error when I turn my Canon video camera to laptop using firewire cable. OS: Windows 7 x64 Camera: Creative (i don`t find which model) Laptop: DELL inspiron 1520 Error when I tried open SplitCam: http://f.imagehost.org/0759/Clipboard03.png SplitCam error when repair it: http://i.imagehost.org/0607/split.png ManyCam just not responding. • Question about ubuntu untrusted source, gpg, keyserver

  I have mirrored the ubuntu archive repository (I must say it's rather huge). Then, I can apt-get install with no problem, but it prompts with following warning: WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated! xxxx, xxxx, ... Install these packages without verification [y/N]? Well, you can always install it. But, I can't install from the ubuntu software GUI. Which require trusted source. So, 1. How to force the GUI to install untrusted package? 2. Should I configure GPG to receive some public keys? (I've already installed ubuntu-keyring, debian-keyring, but it still untrusted) 3. Should I configure GPG to receive unknown keys from some specific keyservers, automatically?
