• Accessing ASP.NET Development Server from another pc on the network

  I would like to test my web app in other browsers. I have installed Virtual PC to do just that. the ASP.NET development server does not allow remote connections so the virtual pc (another computer on the network) cannot access the website. I found this post that was started but there was no solution. I understand that using localhost will not work. I heard about using the machines ip, but how do I get that correct ip? Look at my lynksys router admin? If I were to get as far as getting my IP, im sure that the asp.net dev server does not allow remote connections. How do I enable it to do so?

  If I set a timer to execute a code every 3 seconds. If the code isn't finished in 3 seconds, what will happen? • Best data recovery tools?

  So due to a recent act of stupidity and bravado, I uttered the words "backups! who needs backups?!" and what followed was the tragic loss of 260gb of data. This scenario in particular is requiring me to recover a repartitioned hard disk, but I was wondering what tools people here use in general to recover lost data. I'm sure everyone has been there, either accidentally rewriting files, resaving an old version, computer crash, hard disk death, user deletes an important document etc. So was thinking it might be an interesting point of discussion as to what you guys use to recover lost data. I appologise if this is considered irrelevant, but considering there has been a few recovery questions, I think this might be interesting.

• Why won't Heroku accept my Gemfile.lock in Windows?

  I have a rails application that I deploy on Heroku. I'm using several different machines, and I noticed that when I add new dependencies (so that Gemfile.lock is rebuilt) and do bundle install on my Windows computer at home, push to Heroku fails with the following error: Unresolved dependencies detected; Installing... Windows Gemfile.lock detected, ignoring it. You have modified your Gemfile in development but did not check the resulting snapshot (Gemfile.lock) into version control ... Gemfile.lock IS under version control, but Heroku appearently chooses to ignore it since it's created in Windows, and then complains that it's missing seconds later. Why does this happen? And how can I solve it?

• Alternative way to notify the user of an error

  I have a winform software that communicates with hardware through a protocol. Sometimes error in communication happens and i would like to notify the user. Errors could be for example: timeouts, crc errors, physical disconnection etc... I have a communication window in which i show these errors, but by default this is hidden. The user can open it though the menubar. Popups are annoying to the user (and to myself) so i would like a un-invasive way to notify the user that an error has occurred. Perhaps a info bubble like when XP tells you updates are ready for your computer? I know that NotifyIcon can help put things in the system tray, which i do not wish to have. I'd rather keep it within my MDI. I'm open to other creative ideas as well.

• How to keep .cproject local to each user while working collaboratively through git

  I have a C++ project that I am working on with several other people. Some of us have Macs with OSX and some of us have PCs with either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. We are currently using eclipse to edit the project and git for version control. The problem is that whenever you change property settings on one team member's computer the .cproject file is updated. Because different configurations/ file extensions are used across OSX and Windows we want the .cproject file to remain local. We have tried untracking .cproject through a gitignore for the .cproject file, but that just removes the .cproject file from the repository all together. We have also tried setting up an assumed-unchanged for .cproject but if .cproject is changed all this leads to is the need to manually deal with conflicts and updates. Is there any way to keep the file in the repository, but only change it locally? Ie merging would not update the .cproject file.

• Automator / AppleScript to process incoming emails in Mac Mail

  Hello all, I'm designing an app that allows users to email me crash reports if my app ever crashes. I'd like to leave Mac Mail running on a computer and when an email comes through, an automator script / AppleScript runs to process the contents of the body of the email. I've got the entire parsing/processing done in a python script, except I have to manually copy the contents of the email into a file and then run my parser on that file. What's the best way to set this up so I can the contents of the email be pushed into my parsing script? Many thanks!

• Value of A.S. Degree in Programming

  I am in a quite unusual family situation. For the next two years, I have to stay at home where the only post-secondary institution available is a community college. After two years, I will have to start earning a living. I do not really have any real-world programming experience to put on my résumé. I did some not-too-advanced work in PHP for family and friends, and I’m pretty sure that I want to program for a living. I have been working on an A.S. Degree in Computer Programming and Analysis since fall. My question regarding the degree is: is it worth anything to potential employers or am I just wasting my time? Is there a better way to spend the oncoming two years? If I could get an internship and some experience, would that hold more weight than a two-year degree without experience?

• What features can I use during log in/out

  I know that this question is going to be painfully vague, but here it is any way. I have made an small console application designed to be run on Windows XP Pro computers. It will be run at log in and log out. The command to run this program will be set via GPO and will include command line operators to control what data the program sends. I have used a few built in C# classes to find out information about the computer, which is then sent of to a server as a web request. I need to know which of the following will have issues on a restricted user account on a domain. • Pushing a local clone to remote repository with Mercurial

  Here is what I did: Cloned a remote repository to my local computer. Created a second clone from the first clone. Made changes in the second clone. Never touched anything that resides in the first clone. Now what happens if I directly push to remote repo from the second clone? A new branch is introduced in the remote repo? Maybe a stupid question but I can't test it because there are other developers working on the code and I don't want to mess anything. Thanks.

• What is the best way to make a game timer in Actionscript 3?

  I have built an online game system that depends on a timer that records how long it took a player to complete a challenge. It needs to be accurate to the millisecond. Their time is stored in a SQL database. The problem is that when I use the Timer class, some players are ending up getting scores in the database of less than a second. (which is impossible, as most challenges would take at least 11 seconds to complete even in a perfect situation.) What I have found is that if a player has too many browser windows open, and/or a slow computer, the flash game slows down actually affecting the timer speed itself. The timer is 'spinning' on screen so you can physically see the numbers slowing down. It is frustrating that I cannot just open a second thread or do something to allow flash to keep accurate time regardless of whatever else is going on in the program. Any ideas?

• Android emulator-5554 offline

  I'm having a problem with emulator-5554, it keeps telling me it is offline. When I do a 'adb devices' from the command line it says emulator-5554 offline Even after a fresh restart, I try that command and it still says it is offline. The problem is when I try to install .apk files to the emulator using 'abd install path' from the command prompt, it tells me that it is offline, if I create another device and run that one, then try to install the .apk files, it says i have too many devices connected. So in other words, I can't install my .apk files. How in the world can I get rid of that damn emulator-5554? I heard that if you do a restart, it should clear all the devices, but that does not seem to be working. It is like it is getting initialized when my computer starts up. Has anyone run into this issue? Thanks

• jquery issues - it wont change it accordingly

  My coding isnt linking properly , its meant to use jquery to detect the OS and change the link accordingly , however it isn't. • Get binary data from audio impulses

  I have IR sensor which have TRS plug and I can record my remotes signals into audio. Now I want to control my computer with TV remote, but I don't have any clue how to compare audio input with pre-recorded audio. But after I realized that these audio waves contains only some kind data (binary) I can turn these into binary or hex, so it is much easier to compare. Waves look just like this: http://i.imgur.com/lCIyl.png And this: ttp://i.imgur.com/goJ6d.png These are records of "OK" button, sometimes there are some impulses on right channel too and I don't know why, it seems like connections in sensor are damaged maybe. Ok thats not matter, anyway I need help with python program which read these impulses and turn these into binary, in realtime from audio input(mic). I know it's sounds like "Do it for me, while I enjoy my life", but I don't have experiences with sound transforming/reading... I've looking for python examples for recording and reading audio, but unsuccessfully.

• How secure is encryption?

  Let me preface this by saying I know nothing about encryption. I understand the basic concept of public key / private key encryption but I don't how easily it can be broken, if at all. If one were to believe the movies, encrypted data can be broken by a teenager with a decent computer in a few hours. I have a client who wants credit card information sent via email - encrypted of course, but I'm still not feeling terribly good about the idea. I feel it would be safer to store the info on the VPS, but even then its an unmanaged server and there's nobody watching it who knows much about security. So can anyone tell me if there's a safe way to store and/or send this data out? Thanks

• Controlling rsync with Python?

  I've been wanting to write a python script that would run several instances of rsync in sequence for backing up data to a different computer. At the moment I just have this text file with the commands I use and I've just been copy-pasting them into the terminal, and it seems kinda silly. I want to be able to use python to do this for me. I know very vaguely how to use subprocess.popen, but I have no clue how to get python to interact with rsync directly, like for entering my password for me. Can python do that? Something like: if theProccess.proccessResponse == "Password:" : theProccess.respond(string) Or is the best that I can do is just have it, or even a bash script, just run the rsyncs in sequence and have to type my password in over and over again? • Batch to copy and replace a txt file from one server to another

I want to create and schedule a batch script on server1, which should copy and replace output.txt file from server1 to server2 at path E:\data\output.txt on daily basis. • Problems with viewing site in Internet Exploder

  I built a site and I'm just about finished. It displays properly in all the browsers I have (Safari, Chrome, and Firefox) but my client is not computer savvy at all and still uses Internet Explorer, so that's all he's using to view the site. I don't have IE to test the site so I've been using BrowserStack.com and I see in IE that the site is broken. The navigation bar has a white background and is pushed down a line, and the logo isn't appearing.   I'm currently learning about the different modes the Windows operating system runs in (kernel mode vs. user mode), device drivers, their respective advantages and disadvantages and computer security in general. I would like to create a practical example of what a faulty device driver that runs in kernel mode can do to the system, by for example corrupting memory used for critical OS-processes. How can I execute my code in kernel mode instead of user mode, directly? Do I have to write a dummy device driver and install it to do this? Where can I read more about kernel and user mode in Windows? I know the dangers of this and will do all of the experiments on a virtual machine running Windows XP only

• vcxproj file won't load into solution.

  We've just recently switched to VS 2010 and i had a solution that was working fine. This moring when i try to load the solution i get the error: "An item with the same key has already been added." This occurs when it is trying to load one of our main projects and it is not loaded. I assumed the problem was with my solution so i created a brand new empty solution and tried to load the same vcxproj and got exactly the same error. When i revert the project file to a previous version it works, so apparently it's something in the vcxproj file. However it also appears that i'm the only one in the office that is affected. So some combination of the vcxproj file and my computer seems to be the issue. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Any ideas on a solution? Thanks

  unsigned short s; s = 0xffff; int i = s; How does the extension work here? 2 larger order bytes are added, but I'm confused whether 1's or 0's are extended there. This is probably platform dependent so let's focus on what Unix does. Would the two bigger order bytes of the int be filled with 1's or 0's, and why? Basically, does the computer know that s is unsigned, and correctly assign 0's to the higher order bits of the int? So i is now 0x0000ffff? Or since ints are default signed in unix does it take the signed bit from s (a 1) and copy that to the higher order bytes?
