• Enabling JMX for proxool with tomcat

  I am trying to get proxool's MBeans available so that I can see/manipulate them with jconsole. I have jconsole working, but I don't see anything related to proxool. The system is using Sun Java 1.5.0_17 (I know, I know... I'm working with the developers to upgrade). • new ubuntu server installation - java server not receiving packets

  I have developed a Java server which listens for UDP packets which come from mobile devices. At the moment, it works correctly if I run my Server on my windows PC. I can receive and respond to the UDP packets sent from my phone (over 3g, not wifi). However, I am trying to run the Server on a different computer which I found lying around my house. I have basically done a clean install of Ubuntu Server edition, updated it, installed the java run time environment and configured port forwarding to allow connections on the appropriate port. I have also tried to disable the firewall. The problem is, it doesn't appear as if the server is receiving any packets and I've exhausted my brain thinking on how to solve/debug the problem. Can anyone suggest to me what the problem might be? or more likely something I can do to help me find out more information about what is going wrong.

• How do I find the cause for a huge difference in performance between two identical Ubuntu servers?

  I am running two Dell R410 servers in the same rack of a data center. Both have the same hardware configuration, run Ubuntu 10.4, have the same packages installed and run the same Java web servers. No other load. One of them is 20-30% faster than the other, very consistently. I used dstat to figure out, if there are more context switches, IO, swapping or anything, but I see no reason for the difference. With the same workload, (no swapping, virtually no IO), the cpu usage and load is higher on one server. So the difference appears to be mainly CPU bound, but while a simple cpu benchmark using sysbench (with all other load turned off) did yield a difference, it was only 6%. So maybe it is not only CPU but also memory performance. I tried to figure out if the BIOS settings differ in some parameter, did a dump using dmidecode, but that yielded no difference. I compared /proc/cpuinfo, no difference. I compared the output of cpufreq-info, no difference. I am lost. What can I do, to figure out, what is going on?

• Running php and java in parallel on the same server

  I have got a java server from Rackspace. and I am already running a java application on the server. Now I want to run a php application on the same server. What should I do? When I asked Rackspace people, they said, apache is already installed on the server so I can run the php on it. I have also tried installing php on the server and then copied my php files in var/www/xxx but when I hit the url it is saying giving the page not found error. They have given me the ssh server root username and password. Thanks in advance.

• Running Solr on VPS problem

  I have a VPS with Ubuntu OS. I run solr om my local machine (windows xp laptop) just fine. I have configured Jetty, and Solr just the same way as on my computer, but on the server. I have also downloaded the JRE and installed it on the server. However, whenever I try to run the start.jar file, the PuTTY terminal shows a bunch of text but gets stuck. I could pase the text here but it is very long, so unless somebody wants to see it I wont. Also, I cant view the solr admin page at all. Does anybody have experience in this kind of problem? Maybe java isn't correctly installed? It is a VPS so maybe installation is different. • Why do I get a DependencyProperty.UnsetValue when converting a value in a MultiBinding?

  I have an extremely simple IMultiValueConverter that simply OR's two values. There are no problems when I do not use the converter (other than not the logic I am aiming for, of course). Am I missing something? Stepping through the debugger shows that the InverseBoolConverter is properly inverting the value I pass it, but that value is then not being 'sent' to the MultiValueConverter.

If you try to access the various properties of the JavaBean after the transaction that loaded it has been committed, you'll get an exception, a LazyInitializationException, as Hibernate no longer has a valid transactional context to use to hit the database. But with my experiment, using hibernate 3.6, and postgres 9, it doesnt throw any exception at all. Am i missing something ? • How to do Selection Alignment using the RichTextBox in Silverlight 4?

  I cannot seem to figure out how to do a Selection Alignment in the new RichTextBox, I have an idea that I need to convert the selection into the Paragraph type which supports alignment, but cannot seem to figure this out. None of the Silverlight examples have this, but I'm sure it is possible. I have this code, that does not work - as I think I need the selection to be a Paragraph as it always returns and Exception "Value does not fall within the expected range". • Using @Context, @Provider and ContextResolver in JAX-RS

  I'm just getting acquainted with implementing REST web services in Java using JAX-RS and I ran into the following problem. One of my resource classes requires access to a storage backend, which is abstracted away behind a StorageEngine interface. I would like to inject the current StorageEngine instance into the resource class serving the REST requests and I thought a nice way of doing this would be by using the @Context annotation and an appropriate ContextResolver class. This is what I have so far: In MyResource.java: class MyResource { @Context StorageEngine storage; [...] } In StorageEngineProvider.java: @Provider class StorageEngineProvider implements ContextResolver<StorageEngine> { private StorageEngine storage = new InMemoryStorageEngine(); public StorageEngine getContext(Class<?> type) { if (type.equals(StorageEngine.class)) return storage; return null; } } I'm using com.sun.jersey.api.core.PackagesResourceConfig to discover the providers and the resource classes automatically, and according to the logs, it picks up the StorageEngineProvider class nicely (timestamps and unnecessary stuff left out intentionally): INFO: Root resource classes found: class MyResource INFO: Provider classes found: class StorageEngineProvider However, the value of storage in my resource class is always null - neither the constructor of StorageEngineProvider nor its getContext method is called by Jersey, ever. • Binding from View-Model to View-Model of a child User Control in Silverlight? 2 sources - 1 target..

  Hi there, So i have a UserControl for one of my Views and have another 'child' UserControl inside that. The outer 'parent' UserControl has a Collection on its View-Model and a Grid control on it to display a list of Items. I want to place another UserControl inside this UserControl to display a form representing the details of one Item. The outer / parent UserControl's View-Model already has a property on it to hold the currently selected Item and i would like to bind this to a DependancyProperty on the inner / child UserControl. I would then like to bind that DependancyProperty to a property on the child UserControl's View-Model. I can then set the DependancyProperty once in XAML with a binding expression and have the child UserControl do all its work in its View-Model like it should. The code i have looks like this.. I have looked at Seam reference Seam in action These web pages However I still do not understand how to inject an EJB3 bean into a JSF backing bean. It seems to me that I have to (correct me if I am wrong) Annotate with @Name my backing bean Annotate with @Name my EJB3 bean Use the @In annotation in the backing bean Put an empty seam.properties file in the WAR that contains the backing bean Put an empty seam.properties file in the JAR that contains the EJB Set up a Seam interceptor in ejb-jar.xml of the EJB Don't I need to setup some JNDI URL somewhere? How exactly does Seam will find the EJB? The interceptor is enough? Also this means that I have to add a seam dependency in my EJB archive (because of the @Name annotation). So the web layer (Seam) "spills" into my business logic (EJB). Is this the recommended approach? Am I missing something here?

  Hi, all. I'm facing what I think is a simple problem with Hibernate, but can't get over it (Hibernate forums being unreachable certainly doesn't help). • Defining InputBindings within a Style

  I'm creating a WPF app using the MVVM design pattern, and I'm trying to extend the TabItem control so that it closes the tab when the user clicks the middle mouse button. I'm trying to achieve this using InputBindings, and it works very well until I try to define it within a style. I've learned that you cannot add InputBindings to a style unless you attach it using a DependencyProperty. So I followed this similar post here... and it works... almost. I can close one tab using the middle mouse button, but it won't work on any of the other tabs (all of the tabs are added at runtime and inherit the same style). So I need some help. Why would this only be working the first time, and not after? Obviously I could create a custom control that inherits from a TabItem and make it work, but I'd like to figure this out as I can see this being expanded in my projects. I'm no expert on DependencyProperties, so please help me out. Thanks! • ClassCastException When Calling an EJB that Exists on Same Server

  I have 2 ejbs. Ejb-A that calls Ejb-B. They are not in the same Ear. For portability Ejb-B may or may not exist on the same server. (There is an external property file that has the provider URLs of Ejb-B. I have no control over this.) Example Code: in Ejb-A EjbBDelegate delegateB = EjbBDelegateHelper.getRemoteDelegate(); // lookup from list of URLs from props... BookOfMagic bom = delegateB.getSomethingInteresting(); Use Cases/Outcomes: When Ejb-B DOES NOT EXIST on the same server as Ejb-A, everything works correctly. (it round-robbins through the URLs) When Ejb-B DOES EXIST on the same server, and Ejb-A happens to call Ejb-B on the same server, everything works correctly. When Ejb-B DOES EXIST on the same server, and Ejb-A calls Ejb-B on a different server, I get: javax.ejb.EJBException: nested exception is: java.lang.ClassCastException: $Proxy126 java.lang.ClassCastException: $Proxy126 NOTE (not normal use case but may help): When Ejb-B DOES EXIST on the same server, and this server is NOT listed in the provider URLs for Ejb-B, and Ejb-A calls Ejb-B on a different server, I get the same Exception as above. I'm using Weblogic 10.0, Java 5, EJB3 Basically, if Ejb-B Exists on the server, it must be called ONLY on that server. Which leads me to believe that the class is getting loaded by a local classloader (on deployment?), then when called remotely, a different classloader is loading it. (causing the Exception) But it should work, as it should be Serialized into the destination classloader... What am I doing wrong?? Also, when reproducing this locally, Ejb-A would favor the Ejb-B on the same server, so it was difficult to reproduce. But this wasn't the case on other machines.

• How to aggregate bindings in Silverlight UserControl

  Imagine a UserControl containing some sort of ItemsControl. The UserControl as a whole has a DataContext, but you also need to expose the ItemsSource of the ItemsControl. I have tried all manner of arrangements, and eventually passed a DomainDataSource as a UserControl dependency property named DDS, and bound the ItemsControl like this: ItemsSource="{Binding DDS.Data, ElementName=userControl}" It works, but this is mucky, and with Silverlight mucky is nearly always a sign of incorrect approach. Your advice is sought. It looks like multi-bindings might be the answer to this.

• Phonegap Screenshot plugin in Cordova 2.0.0

It worked and the screenshot was saved to the phone. However it fails with cordova 2.0.0. • Get JVM to grow memory demand as needed up to size of VM limit?

  We ship a Java application whose memory demand can vary quite a lot depending on the size of the data it is processing. If you don't set the max VM (virtual memory) size, quite often the JVM quits with an GC failure on big data. What we'd like to see, is the JVM requesting more memory, as GC fails to provide enough, until the total available VM is exhausted. e.g., start with 128Mb, and increase geometrically (or some other step) whenever the GC failed. The JVM ("Java") command line allows explicit setting of max VM sizes (various -Xm* commands), and you'd think that would be designed to be adequate. We try to do this in a .cmd file that we ship with the application. But if you pick any specific number, you get one of two bad behaviors: 1) if your number is small enough to work on most target systems (e.g., 1Gb), it isn't big enough for big data, or 2) if you make it very large, the JVM refuses to run on those systems whose actual VM is smaller than specified. How does one set up Java to use the available VM when needed, without knowing that number in advance, and without grabbing it all on startup?

  Hi. My goal is to manipulate the text-styles of my application via DependencyProperties. I got a diagram in which the texts are to be manipulated in size, fontfamily, color, etc. So I'd like to use an interface similar to a rich text editor like Word. Neither the system fonts nor the current fonts of the labels are displayed. The combobox is just empty. • Move a legend in ggplot2

  I'm trying to create a ggplot2 plot with the legend beneath the plot. The ggplot2 book says on p 112 "The position and justification of legends are controlled by the theme setting legend.position, and the value can be right, left, top, bottom, none (no legend), or a numeric position". The following code works (since "right" it is the default), and it also works with "none" as the legend position, but "left", "top", "bottom", all fail with "Error in grid.Call.graphics("L_setviewport", pvp, TRUE) : Non-finite location and/or size for viewport" library(ggplot2) (myDat <- data.frame(cbind(VarX=10:1, VarY=runif(10)), Descrip=sample(LETTERS[1:3], 10, replace=TRUE))) qplot(VarX,VarY, data=myDat, shape=Descrip) + opts(legend.position="right") What am I doing wrong? Re-positioning a legend must be incredibly common, so I figure it's me.
