• Aventail VPN connect on Mac OS X 10.6.2 Snow Leopard

  Hello, I am running Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.2). Recently, my company switched (for whatever odd reason) from Cisco VPN (that used to work fine) to Aventail VPN. I proceeded to install the Aventail VPN client on both the mac and a Windows 7 machine, both on my home network. When I try to connect one or the other (I make sure one is disconnected before connecting through the other machine), I get a connection and view the correct certificate - accept it and Aventail tells me that I am connected. However, accessing any page inside my company's network is only possible on Windows. On the Mac I get the following page: http://grab.by/2WOA It looks like my ISP doesn't know how to redirect me? Maybe something about my DNS being set incorrectly on the Mac? Our helpdesk has been completely useless and I was hoping fellow super users can help. Thanks.

• After restoring a SQL Server database from another server - get login fails

  Issue: After you have restored a sql server database from another server, lets say from production to a Q/A environment, you get the "Login Fails" message for your service account. Reason: User logon information is stored in the syslogins table in the master database. By changing servers, or by altering this information by rebuilding or restoring an old version of the master database, the information may be different from when the user database dump was created. If logons do not exist for the users, they will receive an error indicating "Login failed" while attempting to log on to the server. If the user logons do exist, but the SUID values (for 6.x) or SID values (for 7.0) in master..syslogins and the sysusers table in the user database differ, the users may have different permissions than expected in the user database. Solution: Links a user entry in the sys.database_principals system catalog view in the current database to a SQL Server login of the same name. If a login with the same name does not exist, one will be created. Examine the result from the Auto_Fix statement to confirm that the correct link is in fact made. Avoid using Auto_Fix in security-sensitive situations. When you use Auto_Fix, you must specify user and password if the login does not already exist, otherwise you must specify user but password will be ignored. login must be NULL. user must be a valid user in the current database. The login cannot have another user mapped to it. execute the following stored procedure, in this example the login user name is "MyUser" exec sp_change_users_login 'Auto_Fix', 'MyUser'   NOTE: sp_change_users_login cannot be used with a SQL Server login created from a Windows principal or with a user created by using CREATE USER WITHOUT LOGIN.

• Weird entry for robots.txt on a Naked Domain in Google Webmaster Tools

  We own a .co.uk address and use an Internet hosting company that has made mistakes around DNS in the past. Our main site is hosted on www. and their reluctance to allow editing of AAAA records on-line means our naked domain does not resolve. Currently when we attempt to reach the naked version there is no entry for the browser to go to and it displays an unreachable page (nslookup just says Name: name of domain with no further entries such as an IP or Canonical Name). We recently added the relevant TXT records to verify us to view both the www. version and the naked version of the domain in Google Webmaster Tools (in anticipation of the requests to our Internet host coming to fruition). Imagine our shock when double checking the Site configuration Crawler access and finding a (admittedly failing) robots.txt with a dynamically generated HTML page (full of crude pop-up JavaScript) with references to 3 of our most prominent competitors. What could cause this to happen? As we are in the UK I am assuming some DNS server is serving Google bad information. We are going to contact the Internet hosting company to fix our A and AAAA records once and for all, then check that they work in the US (using something like OpenDNS). Should we be doing more though, for instance informing Google (through Webmaster Tools) that we are now aware there is something currently wrong with our naked domain? UPDATE: We have fixed our A records (not AAAA) and that has resolved the issue. But if there are further actions we should take for effectively having a parking page hosted on our active visitor-heavy, SEO-rich domain that advertised our competitors to US visitors, what would they be?

• How do you use environment variables, such as %CommonProgramFiles%, in the PATH and have them recogn

  I'm trying to add C:\Program Files\Common Files\xxx\xxx to the system PATH environment variable by appending %CommonProgramFiles%\xxx\xxx to the existing path. After rebooting, I open a command prompt and check the PATH. It expands correctly. However, when using Process Explorer from Sysinternals to view the Environment variables on services.exe, it shows the unexpanded version. Coincidentally, the paths using %SystemRoot% expand and are recognized just fine. I've tried altering the PATH through the Environment Variables window from System Properties and through direct Registry manipulation, neither seems to work. Is it possible to use other environment variables, besides %SystemRoot% in PATH and have services.exe understand it?

• My powerpoint seems working in right-to-left

  I don't seem to find a way to switch it off. See picture. There seems to be no way to say the paragraph is not RTL. There are addable RTL buttons in the customize ribbon dialog, but they are grayed in ribbon cfg view, even though buttons that are actually there are also grayed in the same way. Looks like there's no way to get some other buttons shown on the office ribbon. I already found how to do it with VBA, but I find no way of doing it from UI and I spent much time searching and trying. Am I senile?

• DEEP DIVE MVVM at #MIX11

  The public (you!) has spoken, and “Deep Dive MVVM” was selected (along with 11 other open call talks) out of 217 proposals. There were 17’000 votes! These are pretty amazing numbers, and believe me when I tell you that I still didn’t completely realize what just happened! I want to really underline the outstanding quality of many of the talks that were proposed. I decided not to reveal my votes, because I just know too many of the candidates and I had only 10 votes but let’s just say that some of my favorites were picked, and some were not, and I really wish that I can see them all either at MIX or in another conference. I already started putting down ideas for the talk (not too many, because I didn’t want to jinx it) and it should be a really great session. We will, as the title shows, dive deep into the subtleties of MVVM, and explore some techniques that allow to overcome some of the hurdles presented by this pattern. This session will be shaped by many emails that I received over the past year, since “Understanding the MVVM pattern” was presented, and offered, for many, a first look into Model-View-ViewModel. So now’s the chance, comment and let me know what topics you would like to discuss. If you had not done so before, go ahead and watch last year’s session, it will be a great preparation. Let’s talk real life development, let’s explore the problems and find solutions. I already have a nice collection of emails asking questions around MVVM and my goal is to answer as many as I can. Leave a comment and I will do my best to answer these as well. The date/time was not announced yet, so watch this space for details. • Set up iis7.5 to deny connections outside of LAN for certain folder

  Im setting up a combined website and extranet currently, they both read from the same database on the same server as the site is hosted on. The reason being that the website is fed from the data that the staff plug into the extranet interface. it also links in to AD for authorising access to the extranet. I have the extranet in a folder within the website folder. What I want to do is only allow the extranet to be accessed from computers within our LAN, but allow the main website to be freely accessible to internet users. I have it set up as a generic web server currently, so anyone can view anything (well up to the point where the user is asked to log into the extranet of course! I have read a lot on this but nothing I read applies to, or works in IIS7.5

• Extending my desktop across two monitors with Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT

  When I played my old computer before I got this one, I was able to use the horizontal span. (Nvidia Geforce 6200 I believe) However, with this new computer, using vista and the 8800, the horizontal span option is gone, and all I have is dual veiw, which doesn't suit my needs. I play World of Warcraft on both my monitors, using CT_Viewport to keep my character and my veiwport on a single screen, while the majority of my addons lie on my other monitor. The problem with dual view is that the WoW will only stay on my primary monitor. Horizontal span would fix this easily, but there is no option for it. Any help regarding this?

• Why do I get error 0x0070004 when trying to update to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8?

  So, I'm trying to update Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 via the Windows Store, but every time I attempt to, the update downloads properly, but then I get the error: Windows 8.1 This app wasn't installed - view details When I click on it, it says: Something happened and the Windows 8.1 could not be installed. Please try again. Error code: 0x80070004 Try again Cancel Install What does this mean? A quick Google search yields nothing. I have tried rebooting, clearing the store cache, and resetting Windows Update. A quick chkdsk scan shows no errors. • Creating an email notification system based on polling database rows

  I have to design an email notification system based on the following requirements: The email notifications would be created based on polling rows in a Mysql 5.5 DB table when they are in a particular 'Completed' state. The email notification should be sent out in no more than 5 minutes from the time the row was created in the DB table (At the time of DB table row creation the state of the row might not be 'Completed'). Once 5 minutes for the DB table row expire in reaching the 'Completed' state, separate email notification need to be sent (basically telling the user that the original email notification would be delayed) and then sending the email notification as and when the row state reaches to being 'Completed'. The rest of the system requirements are : Adding relevant checks to monitor the whole system via MBeans interface. The system should be scalable so that if the rate of DB table rows creation increases so does the Email notification system be able to ramp up. So I request suggestions on following lines: What approach should I take in solving the problem described from a programming/Design pattern point of view? Suggestion for any third party plugin/software that can be used to solve the problem described? Points to take care regarding scalability and monitoring the health of the system? Java is the language of preference but I am open to using off the shelf components that can be interfaced with Java language or provide standard ports for communication. Currently I do have an in house grown system (written in Java) that is catering to the specified requirements, but it's now crumbling under increased load and now I want to give the problem a fresh look. thanks in advance Ashish

• Including Overestimates in MSF Agile Burndown Report

  After using the MSF Agile Burndown report for a few weeks in our new TFS 2010 environment, I have to say I am a huge fan.  I especially find the assignment of Work (hours) portion to be very useful in motivating the team to keep their tasks up to date every day.  Here is a view of the report that you get out of the box. However, I have one problem.  Id like the top line to have some more meaning.  Specifically, when it is changing is that an indication of scope creep, mis-estimation or a combination of the two.  So, today I decided to try to build in a view that would show overestimated time.  This would give me a more consistent top line.  My idea was to add another visual area on top of the graph whenever my originally estimated time was greater than the sum of completed and remaining.  This will effectively show me at least when the top line goes down whether it was scope change or over-estimation. Here is the final result. • Debug Apache mod_status showing 151 requests/sec - 2.7 GB/second

  One of my web servers went crazy this morning and showed "151 requests/sec - 2.7 GB/second - 140.7 MB/request" the normal is like "11.1 requests/sec - 65.6 kB/second - 5.9 kB/request" I don't even think that kind of through put is possible on my server.   Last week I made 2 stops to my local game stores and spent a load of cash on a bunch of new retro games for my collection.  Here are the recent additions: NES - Mega Man 2 - The Adventures of Bayou Billy - Ducktales - Metal Gear - Super Mario Bros / Duck Hunt - Firestorm - Dragon's Lair - Bartman Meets Radioactive Man N64 - Superman 64 - Zelda: Ocarina of Time (in original box, box is in poor condition) Atari - Superman - Adventure - Donkey Kong - Raiders of the Lost Ark Dreamcast - Memory card with view screen - Space Channel 5 Genesis (all in case) - Jurassic Park - Sonic Spinball - Sonic the Hegehog 3 (missing manual) - Spiderman (also called Spiderman vs. The Kingpin) GameGear - Bart vs The Space Mutants Quite a large haul given it was all purchased in 2 days.  Although, Metal Gear I got for a great deal and almost considered buying their other copy simply to resale for more though I decided against it to let another lucky soul find it.  I may need to run over there again because I think they had TMNT 2 (NES) for around $6 and it usually sells for more than that.  I could have sworn I grabbed it and bought it but my receipt tells me differently. I also found my copy of Super Mario 3 and added that to my collection.  Unfortunately one of the corners of the label has begun to peel up pretty badly which sucks although it's still a good item for the collection. In other retro news, this weekend was Easter and while at my grandparents the cousins wanted to play on their NES which was not working.  Me being the retro NES nerd I am, grabbed a screw driver, some Windex, a few toothpicks, and a few cotton swabs and had it up and running under an hour (that includes eating dinner!).  The NES holds the games tighter, has a better connection, and works almost instantly.  I should do THAT for a living!

MAMP PRO is an excellent solution, but some guys don't suggest to use it for serving external requests. Could you explain why it is bad (in details if possible) and how to make it secure enough to be a full-scale and not-only-local webserver? Is there a better solution? XAMPP developers say that one can make their product secure: The default configuration is not good from a securtiy point of view and it's not secure enough for a production environment - please don't use XAMPP in such environment.   We are a startup looking to migrate from Fogbugz/Kiln to a new issue tracker/code review system. We are very happy with Jira, especially the configurability, but we are undecided on a code review tool. We have been trialing Bitbucket, but it doesn't fit our workflow well. Here are the problems we have identified with BB: Comments can be hard to find: when commenting on code not visible in the diff when code that is commented on is later changed viewing the full file doesn't include comments (also doesn't show changes) Viewing comments on individual commits can be a pain We have the implementer merge the diff and close the issue, whereas pull requests are more suited to the open source model where someone with commit rights merges We would like to automate creation of the code review (either from Jira or a command line tool) No syntax highlighting Once the pull request exceeds a certain size, BB won't show the whole thing and you have to view individual commits Linking BB pull requests to Jira issues is a bit janky: we have a pull request URL field on Jira, but this doesn't work when there are changes in multiple repositories Does anyone have any good suggestion given the above? We are tight on budget, and Jira integration is a big plus. We also have multiple commits per issue, and would like to have the option of viewing individual commits in the review. It might also be worth noting that we have a separate reviewer and tester for each issue.

  I've got nginx configured as a front-end to a Python application running under gunicorn, but nginx is terminating connections after about 65k of data have been sent. For example, I've got a view which looks like this: def debug_big_file(request): return HttpResponse("x" * 500000) But when I access that URL through nginx, I only get 65283 bytes: $ curl https://example.com/debug/big-file | wc … curl: (18) transfer closed with outstanding read data remaining 0 1 65283 Note that everything works as expected when accessing gunicorn directly: $ curl http://localhost:1234/debug/big-file | wc … 0 1 500000 The relevant nginx config: location / { proxy_pass http://localhost:1234/; proxy_redirect off; proxy_headers_hash_bucket_size 96; } And nginx version 1.7.0 Some other facts: The number of bytes is consistent from request to request, but it varies based on the content (I first noticed it with a large PNG file, which was cut off after 65,372 bytes, not 65,283) 110k bytes are sent correctly (ie, "x" * 110000 returns all 110,000 bytes), but 120k bytes are not tcpdump suggests that nginx is sending a RST packet to gunicorn:

As far as i can tell the only client program that exists for connecting to providers is a command line tool that comes with the Microsoft Windows Device Driver Development Kit (DDK), e.g.: tracelog -start "NT Kernel Logger" -f krnl.etl -dpcisr -nodisk -nonet -b 1024 -min 4 -max 16 -ft 10 –UsePerfCounter ... tracelog –stop It then requires a separate command line tool to convert the generated log file into something usable, e.g.: trcerpt krnl.etl -report isrdpc.xml Has nobody come up with a Windows program (ala Performance Monitor, Process Monitor, Event Viewer) that lets me start tracing by pushing a "Go" button, let me see events, and i can stop it with a "Stop" button? Is there GUI for Event Tracing for Windows?

  I am running FreeBSD 7. running MySQL 5.1.36 from ports. I am trying to check some data in the MySQL binary log files, and I get the following error: # mysqlbinlog mysql-bin.000021 mysqlbinlog: unknown option '--ssl' In addition, I can't even view the help for this command: # mysqlbinlog --help mysqlbinlog: unknown option '--ssl' Why does mysqlbinlog not know about the option ssl? This server was compiled with SSL, and ssl is activated in the my.cnf configuration file. We use SSL for remote connections, but I am running this command on the local host.

• LDAP over SSL/TLS working for everything but login on Ubuntu

  I have gotten OpenLDAP with SSL working on a test box with a signed certificate. I can use an LDAP tool on a Windows box to view the LDAP over SSL (port 636). But when I run dpkg-reconfigure ldap-auth-config to setup my local login to use ldaps, my login under a username in the directory doesn't work. If I change the config to use just plain ldap (port 389) it works just fine (I can login under a username in the directory). When its setup for ldaps I get Auth.log shows: Sep 5 13:48:27 boromir sshd[13453]: pam_ldap: ldap_simple_bind Can't contact LDAP server Sep 5 13:48:27 boromir sshd[13453]: pam_ldap: reconnecting to LDAP server...
