• MySQL Enterprise Monitor 2.3.12 Is Now Available!

  We are pleased to announce that MySQL Enterprise Monitor 2.3.12 is now available for download on the My Oracle Support (MOS) web site. It will also be available via the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud in approximately 1-2 weeks. This is a maintenance release that contains several new features and fixes a number of bugs. • Introducing the BizTalk Maturity Assessment

There were often common themes to these issues faced by customers and I had a few processes, tools and ideas about how I helped these customers.Over time I learned developed a way of analysing the customers position and this has evolved into the BizTalk Maturity Assessment which I wanted to share.  The idea is that you complete a survey which asks various things related to BizTalk in your organisation.  You are then presented with a visualization of where you sit in terms of maturity in different areas of your BizTalk capability.You should be able to see the areas you need to improve and by retaking the survey at regular intervals you should be able to demonstrate improvement.I have taken the original idea and then been joined by some of my good friends in the community and included ideas from their experience and I think we have something which will help a lot of customers and something which could be a key community asset in the future.The site for this project is on the following link:http://www.biztalkmaturity.com/There is also a case study where I have used the original assessment which demonstrated how I originally used this to help one customer get from a place where they had lots of problems to a place where they were doing BizTalk really well.

• Disable YouTube Comments while using Chrome

  Are you tired of the comments at YouTube being full of profanity or irritating to look at? Now you can watch videos minus the comments with the No YouTube Comments extension for Google Chrome. Before Sometimes reading through the comments at YouTube can be interesting or even fun but at other times they can be a bother to you. It all depends on the contents of the comments (i.e. lots of profanity) and what you would like to have visible while watching videos. After Once you have installed the extension all that you will need to do is refresh the page (if you were already watching a video). As you can see any and all signs of the comments section is gone. • Switching from Java/Java EE career path to C POS path?

  I am a Java/Java EE Developer with about 3 years in this field. I like low-level programming so much... I favor back-end code over front-end. I've a knowledge in C and know little about C++. I got an offer to work with C in Point-of-Sale Payment terminals. I don't know much about how POS works (IDE/toolsets, etc). although I have a payment experience (ISO8583, etc...) I need you own opinion from Switching from the Java's High-level world to POS low-level world Although I love low-level world, but I am afraid from not being found what I seek.. I know programmers are not measured by the tools they use (including prog. langs.) but with their minds. I need your opinions of: Is programming POS terminals in C is an interesting thing, or I'll find myself doing usual code-writing job? (especially I am about to switch my whole career path). I find myself writing an elegant code in Java (like: Sobat http://code.google.com/p/sobat/) a code where I find myself in... So do I'll find the same thing in POS C? or It will all about Libraries that I'll call to finish my work?! Lastly, does this thing worse adventure with my current career (stability, conference, etc.. )? (as I currently don't think to move to a new job) Thanks.

  When you press F5 to start debugging Azure project, you might get the following exception: If you go to the Output windows, you will see the detailed error message below: Windows Azure Tools: Failed to initialize Windows Azure storage emulator. Unable to start Development Storage. Failed to start Development Storage: the SQL Server instance ‘localhost\SQLExpress’ could not be found. Please configure the SQL Server instance for Development Storage using the ‘DSInit’ utility in the Windows Azure SDK. This is because by default, Azure uses the SQLExpress to start Development Storage. To fix this you can do the following: You need to open command prompt, and navigate to C:\Program Files\Windows Azure SDK\v1.4\bin\devstore (depending on your Azure version, the file path is slightly different.) Next, run DSInit /sqlInstance:. (. Means the SQL Server use the default instance, if you have name instance, you need to change. to the name of the SQL Server) After a short while, you should see the following windows showing the configuration succeeds. Sentry, a new and free addition to the LastPass password management tool, automates the process and notifies you of breaches. In response to all the recent and unfortunate high-profile security breaches LastPass has rolled out Sentry–a tool that monitors breach lists to notify you if your email appears in a list of breached accounts. The lists are supplied by PwnedList, a massive database of security breach data, and securely indexed against your accounts within the LastPass system. If there is a security breach and your email is on the list, you’ll receive an automated email notice indicating which website was compromised and that your email address was one of the positive matches from the breach list.   Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/tmurphy/archive/2013/06/27/build-2013-sessionndashtesting-your-c-base-windows-store-apps.aspx Testing an application is not what most people consider fun and the number of situation that need to be tested seems to grow exponentially when building mobile apps.  That is why I found the topic of this session interesting.  When I found out that the speaker, Francis Cheung, was from the Patterns and Practices group I knew I was in the right place.  I have admired that team since I first met Ron Jacobs around 2001.  So what did Francis have to offer? He started off in a rather confusing who’s on first fashion.  It seems that one of his tester was originally supposed to give the talk, but then it was decided that it would be better to have someone who does development present a testing topic.  This didn’t hinder the content of the talk in the least.  He broke the process down in a logical manner that would be straight forward to understand if not implement. Francis hit the main areas we usually think of such as tombstoning, network connectivity and asynchronous code, but he approached them with tools they we may not have thought of until now.  He relied heavily on Fiddler to intercept and change the behavior of network requests. • Enjoy Seamless Reading at Twitter in Chrome

  Twitter can be a lot of fun but having to constantly use the More Button to view a large number of tweets is frustrating. All that you need to be rid of that frustration is the More Tweets! extension for Google Chrome. Before Here it is…the classic “More Button”. If you are only interested in viewing a few tweets on occasion then it is not a problem. But if you are looking at a large number of tweets on a daily basis then it can be very frustrating. Notice the last tweet from TinyHacker shown here… After After installing the extension the only thing that you will need to do is refresh your Twitter page if you had it open before-hand. Now there will be a seamless connection from page to page when you are reading through tweets. You can see the TinyHacker tweet from above followed oh so nicely by tweets from the second page…this is definitely an improvement. For those who may be curious if you are quick enough with your mouse you can see what the “automated connection process” looks like. • SQL Azure Pricing

  Microsoft’s pricing for SQL Server in the cloud, SQLAzure has been announced: $9.99   per month for 0 – 1GB $99.99 per month up to 10GB. There’s currently a 10GB maximum size cap for SQLAzure. For larger data storage needs, you’ll need to break the databases into smaller sizes. Scaling SQL Azure Applications If you think you’re going to need 100GB in the near term, it probably makes sense to break your application up into multiple separate databases from the get-go (10 x $9.99 = $99.99 anyway) and just make really sure none of the individual databases exceed 10GB. Beep Beep, Back That Database Up The bandwidth costs for SQL Azure are $.15 per GB of outbound bandwidth.  Assuming that you don’t compress the data before you pull it out of the cloud, that means daily backups of a 1GB database will add another $4.50 per month, and a 10GB database will add another $45/month.  Daily backups will cost about half of what your monthly service charges cost. It’s not completely clear from the press release, but if Microsoft follows Amazon’s pricing model, bandwidth between the Microsoft cloud services will not incur a cost.  That would mean it might make sense to spin up an Windows Azure computing application for $.12 per hour, use that application to compress your SQL Azure database, and then send the compressed data off to Azure storage for backup.  That would eliminate the data in/out costs, and minimize the Azure storage costs ($.15/GB).  Database administrators would back up their SQL Azure data to Azure Storage, keep a history of backups there, and restore them to SQL Azure faster when needed. Of course, there’s no native backup support in SQL Azure, and it’s not clear whether Windows Azure will include tools like SQL Server Integration Services. • Why is HTML/Javascript minification beneficial

  Why is HTML/Javascript minification beneficial when the HTTP protocol already supports gzip data compression? I realize that Javascript/HTML minification has the potential to significantly reduce the size of Javascript/HTML files by removing unnecessary whitespace, and perhaps renaming variables to a few letters each, but doesn't the LZW algorithm do especially well when there are many repeated characters (e.g. lots of whitespace?) I realize that some Javascript minification tools do more than just reduce size. Google's closure compiler, for example, also tries to improve code performance by inlining functions and doing other analyses. But the primary purpose of Javascript minification is usually to reduce file size. I also realize there are other reasons you might want to minify aside from performace, such as code obfuscation. But again, that reason is not usually emphasized as much as performance gain and file size reduction. For example, Closure Compiler is not advertised as an obfuscation tool, but as a code size reducer and download-speed enhancer. So, how much performance do you really gain from Javascript/HTML minification when you're already significantly reducing file size with gzip compression?

• How to learn & introduce scrum in small startup?

  In a few months, a friend will establish his startup software company, and I will be the software architect with one additional developer. Though we have no real day-to-day experience with agile methods, I have read much "overview" type of material on them, and I firmly believe they are a good - if not the only - way to build software. So with this company, I want to go for iterative, agile development from day 1, preferably something light-weight. I was thinking of Scrum, but the question is: what is the best way for me and my colleagues to learn about it, to introduce it (which techniques when etc) and to evaluate whether we should keep it? Background which might be relevant: we're all experienced developers around the same age with similar professional mindset. We have worked together in the past and afterwards at several different companies, mostly with a Java/.NET focus. Some are a bit familiar with general ideas from the agile movement. In this startup, I have great power over tools, methods and process. The startup's product will be developed from scratch and could be classified as middleware. We have some "customer" contacts in the industry who could provide input as soon as we get to an alpha stage.

• How to configure SoapUI with client certificate authentication

  SoapUI is one of the best free tools around to test web services. Some time ago I was trying to send a soap message towards a SSL web service that was set up for client certificate authentication. I pretty soon got stuck at the “javax.net.ssl.SSLException: HelloRequest followed by an unexpected handshake message” error, but after reading several posts on the internet I solved that issue. It’s not really that complicated after all, but since I could not find a decent place on the internet that explains this scenario in a proper way, here’s a list of steps that you need to do to make it work. Note: this following steps are based on a Windows environment   Step one: Export your certificate (the one that you want to use as the client certificate) using the export wizard with the private key and with all certificates in the certification path: Give it a password (anything you want): And export it as a PFX file to a location somewhere on disk: Step two: Install the newest version of SOAP UI (currently it is 3.6.1) Open the file C:\Program Files\eviware\soapUI-3.6.1\bin\ soapUI-3.6.1.vmoptions and add this line at the bottom: -Dsun.security.ssl.allowUnsafeRenegotiation=true This is needed because of a JAVA security feature in their newest frameworks (For further reading about this issue, read this: http://www.soapui.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4089 and this: http://java.sun.com/javase/javaseforbusiness/docs/TLSReadme.html).   Open SOAPUI and go to preferences>SSL Settings and configure your certificate in the keystore (use the same password as in step one): That should be it. Just create a new project and import the WSDL from the client authenticated SSL webservice: And now you should be able to send soap messages with client certificate authentication. • Writing a "Hello World" Device Driver for kernel 2.6 using Eclipse

  Goal I am trying to write a simple device driver on Ubuntu. I want to do this using Eclipse (or a better IDE that is suitable for driver programming). So I: Installed Ubuntu 11.04 desktop x86 on a VMWare virtual machine, Installed eclipse-cdt and linux-headers-2.6.38-8 using Synaptic Package Manager, Created a C Project named TestDriver1 and copy-pasted above code to it, Changed the default build command, make, to the following customized build command: make -C /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic/build M=/home/isaac/workspace/TestDriver1 The problem I get an error when I try to build this project using eclipse. Here is the log for the build: **** Build of configuration Debug for project TestDriver1 **** make -C /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic/build M=/home/isaac/workspace/TestDriver1 all make: Entering directory '/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.38-8-generic' make: *** No rule to make target vmlinux', needed byall'. Stop. make: Leaving directory '/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.38-8-generic' Interestingly, I get no error when I use shell instead of eclipse to build this project. To use shell, I just create a Makefile containing obj-m += TestDriver1.o and use the above make command to build. So, something must be wrong with the eclipse Makefile. Maybe it is looking for the vmlinux architecture (?) or something while current architecture is x86. Maybe it's because of VMWare? As I understood, eclipse creates the makefiles automatically and modifying it manually would cause errors in the future OR make managing makefile difficult. So, how can I compile this project on eclipse?

• Antec Fusion Black LCD won't turn off on system shutdown

  Hi! I've been struggling a while with getting the iMON LCD/IR-receiver on my Antec Fusion Black case to shutdown together with the system (XBMC Live 10 - ubuntu based). But it won't. When it's turned off the LCD still lights up the whole room. Many have proposed the "solution" of setting the machine into hibernation instead but that however won't work for me, since I'm unable to suspend my system. It is the LCD/IR-module that prevents me from suspending and I haven't found a solution to properly unload it on suspending (it's way above my linux knowledge). I need help with getting the display to turn off the backlight when the system is turned off. Can anyone please help me? If anyone also has the knowledge on how to get the eject function to work on my Antec Veris rm200 remote I would be very grateful, I was told about that it could get fixed with irexec but I do not know how since I haven't been able to find a good tutorial on the subject. Thank you for helping me!
