  This is a follow-up question to this question. I mistakenly worded the question, but got a good answer before I could correct myself, so I didn't want to delete it. Sorry! Now that I know that it is possible, I'd like to implement procedural world generation, but I don't want it to look gridded or blocky, where everything is obviously placed on an integer grid. I know that you can do this in gridded worlds by inputting a square's x and y into a noise function, or similar, but how can I generate a more natural looking object placement using procedural methods? This is in the context of an adventure game, if it matters.

  I have a class named GuestbookEntry that maps to the properties that are in the database table named "guestbook". Very simple! Originally, I had a static method named getActiveEntries() that retrieved an array of all GuestbookEntry objects. Each row in the guestbook table was an object that was added to that array. Then while learning how to properly design PHP classes, I learned some things: Static methods are not desirable. Separation of Concerns Single Responsibility Principle If the GuestbookEntry class should only be responsible for managing single guestbook entries then where should this getActiveEntries() method most properly go? Update: I am looking for an answer that complies with the SOLID acronym principles and allows for test-ability. That's why I want to stay away from static calls/standard functions. DAO, repository, ...? Please explain as though your explanation will be part of "Where to Locate FOR DUMMIES"... :-)

• Is the "impossible object" possible in computer graphics?

  This may be a silly question but I want to know the answer to it. I saw this thing called the "impossible object", while they're many different images of this online, it's suppost to be impossible geometry. Here is an example: Now as far as logic goes, I know you don't have to obey it in games, such as a flying cow, or an impossible object. So that's out of the way, but what stands in my way is whether or not there is a way to draw this onto a 3D scene. Like is there a way to represent it as a 3D object? Thanks!

Major technique I have found so far are two: Some use a overlay and underlay div and fade in and out each others visibility. While others, create a div of exact size of the slider on the slider-initialization and play with its z-index property and then fade each other consequently. Here's my method: Gather Input Project Rectangle Check for intersection and ispassable Update The update method is built on object_position * seconds_passed * velocity * speed. Input changes velocity and is normalized if 1. This method works well with just one object comparison, however I pass a list or a for loop to the collision detector and velocity gets changed back to a non zero when the list hits an object that passes the test and the object can pass through. Any solutions would be much appreciated. Side note is there a more proper way to simulate movement?

  I've got this idea for some time and I was wondering if anyone has seen such a feature/app in any operating system and if you haven't, what do you think about it. Where do you think I should begin? The idea is simple. I think we all have those files that are made and probably used for a few days and then are left on our disk and we never delete them or even check to see if we need them again. It'd be cool if you could right click on a file and click on "Expire in.. 3 days" for example. And the file gets deleted after 3 days. I have a great need for this and maybe some people will find it useful. I was thinking of writing a script and use the Nautilus Action project in GNOME for a start.

I'm after the math involved, and cannot find any good non-marketing stuff on the web. The sort of questions I want to answer: how much impact does a single variable (e.g. color of text) have? what is the correlation between variables? what type of distribution is used for modelling (Gaussian, Binomial, etc.)? When using statistics to analyze results - what should be considered as a random variable - the web-page element that gets different variations or the binary conversion-or-no-conversion outcome of an impression? There's plenty of information about different website optimization testing methods and their benefits\pitfalls, plenty of information about multivariate statistics in general, do you guys know of resources that discuss statistics in this specific context of website optimization ? Using the web interface, it seems only possible to download one file at a time. Is there a way to setup automatic sync or to download all the files in a folder with one step? • Can a high FPS negatively affect how a program runs?

  Yeah I know this is a broad question and will get down rated, I'm just hoping for some answer before it gets closed. Anyway, I'm using Slick 2D/Java to play around with graphics. I'm having some trouble with trying to move an image. The weird thing is, the code works just fine on my laptop, but the image sporadically moves to (0,0) and stops on my desktop. The only difference between the two is that it says the FPS is about 500 on my laptop and 6600 on my desktop. Can that affect it or does someone have any ideas for what to check on?

• 12.4 LTS after update fails to login

  An update today (30-11-2012) on 12.4 lead to failure to log in. The system gets through its boot process then presents the logins, on choosing any of these immediately returned to log-in screen with no error. Machine is an AMD FX 64 on an Asus MB using the built-in graphics. If no one knows what this might be, what's the alternative distro to Ubuntu? It's the second time something like this has happened after an update in three months, kudos to the Ubuntu team but I need more reliability. Cheers, thanks to all.

• Using "MTNL 3G Jadoo" data card on Ubuntu

  I am trying to use "MTNL 3G Jadoo" data card (Teracom LW272) with Ubuntu 12.04. On connecting, it gets mounted as a drive containing the client installation .deb file. I opened the .deb file in Ubuntu Software Center and installed it. I searched for "MTNL" in Ubuntu search and found "MTNL 3G Modem" application. But it won't run. I found it is installed in /opt/MTNL-3GModem. I tried running it from the terminal as: sudo /opt/MTNL-3GModem/ModemClient, but no luck. Any idea how to get it working?

  I work for a gym. I am the programmer, its just me, nobody else! Gets really frustrating when there's nobody to bounce conceptual ideas off of. I'm getting rid of our archaic paper binder systems for tracking appointments and what not. I've made a lot of things successfully already, now I'm trying to tackle the personal training department. What I want: Trainer information and work schedule Appointment booking that can be done by time slot with all available trainers for that time, or by trainer with all available hours for that trainer What I've tried so far: I started with an 'appointments' database, a 'trainers' database, and a 'schedules' database. This became so complicated trying to fit the schedule in that I scrapped it. Does anyone know know the best way to structure the tables for this and how to sort of make them communicate correctly? I don't need specific code, I just need help understand how to make this thing!

• When should I clear an auxilliary render target?

  I'm using a few different render targets in my game in addition to the back buffer. These other render targets are only used in a few places, for specific tasks. I'm wondering when I should be clearing them. Right now I clear all of my render targets at the beginning of the frame, and it seems like I'm waiting for all the textures to clear before the rest of the drawing gets underway. Would it be more efficient to clear these textures later in the frame, when they aren't being used? Is there any hope of the GPU sort of clearing them "on the side" while unrelated rendering is happening? Or are these tasks always sequential and will I always need to wait for clearing?

Basically the left end of the image is sort of a continuation of the right end. You won't be able to see any cuts. I'm trying to create a clouds texture to add to my planet such that it will seem it has clouds. I managed to create the clouds in GIMP, however, I can't figure out how to make sure the left end of my image is a smooth continuation of the right end. For example if you were to map the below image to your sphere (I removed transparency to make it clearer), there would be a very obvious transition from the right end of the image back to the left end on your sphere. How would I create a texture such that I get rid of that? Sorry for my lack of terminology.
