• Hadoop or Hadoop Streaming for MapReduce on AWS

  I'm about to start a mapreduce project which will run on AWS and I am presented with a choice, to either use Java or C++. I understand that writing the project in Java would make more functionality available to me, however C++ could pull it off too, through Hadoop Streaming. Mind you, I have little background in either language. A similar project has been done in C++ and the code is available to me. So my question: is this extra functionality available through AWS or is it only relevant if you have more control over the cloud? Is there anything else I should bear in mind in order to make a decision, like availability of plugins for hadoop that work better with one language or the other? Thanks in advance

• How to programmatically alpha fade a textured object in OpenGL ES 1.1 (iPhone)

  I've been using OpenGL ES 1.1 on the iPhone for 10 months, and in that time there is one seemingly simple task I have been unable to do: programmatically fade a textured object. To keep it simple: how can I alpha fade, under code control, a simple 2D triangle that has a texture (with alpha) applied to it. I would like to fade it in/out while it is over a scene, not a simple colored background. So far the only technique I have to do this is to create a texture with multiple pre-faded copies of the texture on it. (Yuck) As an example, I am unable to do this using Apple's GLSprite sample code as a starting point. It already textures a quad with a texture that has its own alpha. I would like to fade that object in and out.

• Videoconference using Flash and SIP

  The front-end will be Flash, to run in a browser and have access to the camera. I must use SIP to control the sessions. How could I do this? Will a Red5 server and a MjSip sever do the trick? As in i'd use MjSip to setup the session and warn users about calls, and Red5 to stream the video and audio? Any suggestions? Note: only 1-on-1 conference is required.

• Can I use some combination of HttpHandler and HttpModule to create an asynchronous file upload?

  I am trying to write a simple asynchronous file upload control for ASP.Net. I've tried a few implementations out there (AjaxControl Toolkit Async Upload, Telerik RadAsyncUpload, AjaxUploader, Uploadify, etc.), but they all leave me wanting something more. I'd rather not use a Flash component, a simple throbber would be OK. Some don't have client side call backs. I figure you can make an http module that checks the request form's enctype and files collection on BeginRequest and save those files to disk. Then somehow use an httpHandler to poll the module's status but I can't quite figure out how to put it all together asynchronously. Can you help me arrange the pieces?

  I am using the ASP.NET3.5 gridview control in a new project. My problem is that the gridview presents data in basic tabular format, whereas I want a grid with row header / grouping behaviors. An example of this would be Outlook web interface, which can group emails by date, as well as allowing you to select individual emails to display. My problem: I can't see how this could be easily done with Gridview? I did find a product called Telerik that has a seemingly fancy Gridview, but I am hesitant to spend money on a single components that now also locks me into a third-party framework...

• Managing Team Development with SSAS, TFS, & BIDS

  I am currently a single BI developer over a corporate datawarehouse and cube. I use SQL Server 2008, SSAS, and SSIS as my basic toolkit. I use Visual Studio +BIDS and TFS for my IDE and source control. I am about to take on multiple projects with an offshore vendor and I am worried about managing change. My major concern is manging merges and changes between me and the offshore team. Merging and managing changes to SQL & XML for just one person is bad enough but with multiple developers it seems like a nightmare. Any thoughts on how best to structure development knowing that sometimes there is no way to avoid multiple individuals making changes to the same file?

  I have a Textbox, a LinkButton and a RadioButtonList inside an UpdatePanel. When the button is clicked, the UpdatePanel shows matching items in the radiobuttonlist. This works fine, but I now need to make the same happen OnKeyDown on the TextBox. I'm trying to cancel all AJAX requests in progress but not having much luck. Firstly, on every keypress the UpdatePanel posts back, so only one letter can be changed at a time. Secondly, the textbox loses focus on postback. I need to show the list as normal, but OnKeyDown as well as when the button is pressed.   I'm dynamically adding a Boolean column to a DataSet. The DataSet's table is the DataSource for a GridView, which AutoGenerates the columns. Issue: The checkboxes for this dynamically generated column are all disabled. How can I enable them? ds.Tables["Transactions"].Columns.Add("Retry", typeof(System.Boolean)); ds.Tables["Transactions"].Columns["Retry"].ReadOnly = false; In other words, how can I control how GridView generates the CheckBoxes for a Boolean field? • OpenNETCF DirectShowPlayerControl display is going black randomly when playing videos if the player

  I have a application that runs on touch enabled device with WinCE 3.5 OS. I have a show player control to display adds when the system is left idle for some configured amount of time.. So the DirectShowPlayerControl will be iniated every time the show player is launched and will be destroyed when it is closed... The player for the first time plays videos continuously for any amount of time. Once the player is destroyed and recreated the video are changing but the display goes black and in between if some small video is placed that alone is displayed. Whenever the form is closed am calling DirectShowPlayerControl.Dispose() method.

• recaptcha asp.net always returns invalid

  The reCaptcha example for ASP.NET does not seem to work. I followed the instructions but it always returns false, "The verification words are incorrect.". The entries are good. I'm using localhost as the site but am not getting any public/private key errors which I did get when adding a bad key (as a test). I've seen this error reported a lot but no good answers. Some suggest to call the validate on the control before checking to see if it is valid but this did not work for me.

  I have a BindingSource on a form with MyObject Datasource. I Open another form and passing MyObject where i give its EntitySetObject reference to another BindingSource. Everything ok. Deleting an Entity on EntitySetObject reference and closing the form with EndEdit(). OK. Back in the "First" form i add one Entity in MyObject.EntitySetObject and again opening the form. But i have noticed that when giving the datasource to the BindingSource i have 2 items in cachedlist and 3 entities. Control now shows only the 2 cached items. Any Idea?

The question I have is, the variable headers is basically a long list. Looking something like this: [('Content-Type', 'text/html; charset=utf-8'), ('Pragma', 'no-cache'), ('Cache-Control', 'no-cache'), ('Content-Length','20'), ('Content-Encoding', 'gzip')] Now, I'm looking to just modify the value based on the request - but are these positions fixed? First, i thought that i could use wpf 3D to make the visualizer, but i need to work with light .. My main application should send property ( beam angle, orientation (X,Y), position(X,Y), Brush ( color,shape,effect)) to the 3D visualizer But i would like to be able to move light (position in the scene) by mouse during execution and had value in return... So .. Does XNA is the easiest way to doing that ? • Parts of statusbar disappearing with IE BHO

  I have a C# IE BHO in use for an internal company app that is adds a pane to the statusbar with SB_SETPARTS (it mitm's the SETPARTS call and inserts an element into the array) and then draws the controls by moving them from a hidden (in-process) form with SetParent() This technique works well but it causes other parts of the statusbar to appear briefly and then disappear. Affected parts seem to be all of the panes that don't have their own hWnd, eg the "Internet | Protected Mode" and icon, and some of those icons that appear in the six panes immediately to the left. Does anyone know what is causing this? I suspect that either certain messages aren't getting to the statusbar32 control to draw the stuff, or my WindowsForms10 additions are sending out extraneous messages. Everything appears fine for about a second, and then the other parts just disappear.

  Okay today, as most of you noticed Framework 4.0 has been released. I've been working on a project which is being built on framework 3.5. Since I want to use dynamic keyword and most of the asp.net features like Tableless Menu Control, ClientIDMode and clean web.config etc. I am kinda urging to migrate the unfinished project to 4.0 but I am little hesitating about that.Some times I think it is way better to wait for SP1. So what do you think about it? You guys will migrate to unfinished projects or will still hang out with 3.5 for a while. Thanks.

  I have created a RichTextBox called SharpTextBox which indicates and limits the number of characters that can be typed in it. • VS2010 .filter files and SVN

  Since we've switched to VS2010 we've noticed a new .filters file that apparently contains the filter structure of the project. We're also using subversion as our source control. Unfortunately, every time we check in now we end up with merge conflicts if anyone's added a file or filter to the project. SVN seems absolutely incapable of merging this file type correctly even though it's text based. It's getting rather frustrating. Is anyone else dealing with this problem? Has anyone found a solution?
