  • Java EE without Application Server

    Since EJB 3 we have embeddable EJB containers, JPA implementations can be used without an application server, there is Weld for contexts and dependency injection and so on. Since on many systems is only Tomcat available, I wonder, if Java EE could be used without an application server but with a Servlet container like Tomcat. What would I have to do to set up an Java environment? What drawbacks do you see?

    Hi, var xmlHttpRequest = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP"); xmlHttpRequest.open("POST", "http://vat/_vti_bin/lists.asmx", false); How can I let this script work on a Terminal server? When I open it on my local pc, it works, but when I do the same thing in a browser on a Terminal server, I get Access Denied. I tried using ServerXMLHTTP, but then i get Cannot create automation object

  • Connect to ArcGIS Server w/ ArcCatalog

    How does one add a workstation account to the agsadmin group on the server? Does this require both machines to be on the same Windows domain? A colleague cannot connect via ArcCatalog but I don't know how to add his account to the group because the account does not exist on the server. (Oddly I can connect from my machine, but my account is also not a member of the agsadmin group.)

    Microsoft is planning to release the second edition of SQL Server 2008, the new edition will named SQL Server 2008 R2 due to be released by May 1st 2010.   Amongst the change on the edition is pricing which is anticipated to go up by 25% for the Standard Edition and about 15% for the Enterprise Edition. As for the features, there are some very cool additions  including PowerPivot for SharePoint, Master Data Services and Multi-Server Administration.   • Colour coding of the status bar in SQL Server Management Studio - Oh dear

    The new feature in SQL Server 2008 to have your query window status bar colour coded to the server you are on is great. Its a nice way to distinguish production from development servers. Unfortunately it was pointed out to me by a client recently that it doesn't always work. To me that sort of makes it pointless. Its a bit like having breaks that work some of the time. Are you going to place Russian roulette every time you execute the query. Whats more the colour doesn't change if you change the connection. So you can flip between dev and production servers but your status bar stays the colour you set for the dev server. It really annoys me to find features that sort of work. The reason I initially gave up on SQLPrompt was that it didn't work 100% of the time and for that time it didn't work I wasted so much time trying to get it to work I wasted more time than if I didn't have it. (I will say that was 2-3 years ago).   • Can't browse svn repo using TortoiseSVN on Windows Server 2008

    Hi, Environment is: Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Slik-Subversion-1.6.11-x64 TortoiseSVN-1.6.8.19260-x64-svn-1.6.11 I have setted up svn srvice based on Jeff Atwood guidlines and can connect work with host via svn command lines like svn list svn://localhost, but TortoiseSVN can't connect to it even on server machine itself. All firewall types are off. TortoiseSVN error message is: Can't connect to host 'localhost': No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it. How can I solve this problem? I'm looking for a fast, multi-user complete server-side web browser that can interface with PHP and run complete Javascript.     I have a single table called "Indexes", it contains one nvarchar and three ntext columns (all Full Text Indexes). Index is up to date. CONTAINSTABLE(Indexes, *), 'test', 5) //5 results No matter what I change the above keyword too, it only returns the first 3-5 results. It should roughly return 90-120 results, for the above query. SELECT count(*) FROM Indexes WHERE [Description] like '%test%' //122 results How would I start to troubleshoot this problem?

  • Pros and Cons of a proxy/gateway server

    I'm working with a web app that uses two machines, a BSD server and a Windows 2000 server. When someone goes to our website, they are connected to the BSD server which, using Apache's proxy module, relays the requests & responses between them and the web server on the Windows server. The idea (designed and deployed about 9 years ago) was that it was more secure to have the BSD server as what outside people connected to than the Windows server running the web app. The BSD server is a bare bones install with all unnecessary services & applications removed. These servers are about to be replaced and the big question is, is a cut-down, barebones server necessary for security in this setup. From my research online I don’t see anyone else running a setup like this (I don't see anyone questioning it at least.) If they have a server between the user and the web app server(s), it is caching, compressing, and/or load balancing. Is there anything I’m overlooking by letting people connect directly from the internet ** to a Windows 2008 R2 server that’s running the web application? ** there’s a good hardware firewall between the internet with only minimal ports open Thank you.

    I'm writing a ASP.NET application used within our company. Now I want to send emails to some users via a email account on our exchange server. I tried to use System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient, where a proprietary account and password are given to specify the credentials. But the code failed with following exception: "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it" Is that due to Exchange Server policies to prevent spam? How can I get it to work?

    I'm still trying to determine an answer to my question from a few minutes ago, "Should client-server code be written in one 'project' or two?" and I think it would benefit me to see how other projects organize their code (and hopefully deduce the pros and cons of why they chose to do it that way). What are some open source client-server projects which might be best to look at and mimic their code organization style? Java is preferred but not required.
