• Anyone tried dd'ing Raidmembers?

  I want replace all disks in a 10 disk raid6 (linux software raid). I could do this by pulling a disk, let the array rebuild, rinse, repeat. But this would take a very long time, and cause 10 rebuilds, which would most likely stress all 10 disks much more than simply reading each disk through once. My question is thus: Could I just shut down the array, and dd each old disk to a new disk and then start the array with the 10 new disks? In an ideal world, I would build another server and just copy the data via network, but this is not an ideal world.

• Why is VMware vSphere Client hanging at the console?

  When I use the vSphere Client (against an ESXi 4.1 server) it hangs a lot. It's always at the same place - using the console on a VM. The console stops responding - and a lot of times, the management window stops responding as well. The operating system won't close the window (as the application isn't responding) and requires a force close. I've had the console refuse to give up the mouse, and have had the console freeze with the cursor in the top left (before any VM software starts, maybe?). The environment is this: the system is a Dell laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick) fully updated with VirtualBox OSE running Windows XP (also fully updated). The vSphere Client is running in the Windows XP VM. Got all that? How do I keep these hangs from happening? It is very aggravating. I'm still trying just to get the VM loaded with Ubuntu Server...

• What do you use to loadbalance IPv6 services?

  Hi, the current Linux software environment for IPv6 load balancing looks a bit grim. IPVS has rudimentary support for IPv6 but it's far from complete. NAT for IPv6 seems to be a no-go. Are there any other projects which aim for this goal? Does the IPv6 support in other OS look better? Are there any commercial products which have been successfully used in production environments with non-trivial load patterns? Or is it just that the time for IPv6 hasn't come... yet? ;) best regards, Michael

• Export a single layer as an image in Photoshop

  I have a lot of designers send me layered PSDs of their designs and I need to break out the pieces of the designs to place on web pages. I can do a decent number of things in Photoshop, but I'm hardly efficient with it. My old way of just copying the image that's in a layer and pasting into a new image seems to take forever as I screw around with cropping and such. I've got Photoshop CS5, so I don't need external software to do anything, but I just need to figure out how to take a single layer, that may hold something small like an icon, and export it as a PNG or JPG. I am aware of the script called "Export Layers to Files" but it took about an hour and exported ALL of my layers to a huge number of files. I wasn't looking for a solution that broad. Is there an easy way to do this?

• OS X will not register newly installed network adapters

  I have purchased an Edimax 7318USg and tested it on a Windows machine (works). The installation process for the software for this adapter runs smoothly. However, OS X simply does not recognize new network adapters. When you go to System Preferences/Network, a new network adapter should be present/there should be an alert. This is not the case. Why might this be? Is there a setting I may reset to force the operating system to recognize this? Thanks!

• Tips for switching jobs and moving into web based programming?

  I graduated in 2006 with a computer science degree and got solid grades (3.5 overall 3.8 in my major) For the past 4.5 years I've been working as a Software Engineer doing primarily rich client development. Most of my experience is with Java, Swing and C++. I've done a lot of network programming and I have acquired some skill working & debugging in distributed environments. I would like to switch jobs and move into a role where I can get exposure to some new technologies and frameworks. I would like to move into a more web development role but I find my lack of web development experience is hurting me. 90% of the jobs I see advertised are looking for one of two skill sets: 1) Stereotypical server side Java web developer. Experience with Spring, Hibernate, J2EE, etc. 2) Stereotypical front end web developer. Experience with Javascript, jQuery, HTML5, GWT, CSS, etc I find most of these companies are looking really specifically for this experience and they are not willing to take on good programmers/ CS fundamental guys who lack experience with this stuff. I would love to get a job doing stuff like this, but have my skills become out of date and unmarketable? Any opinions on ways to sell myself to help get a new position?

It’s a cognitive software agent called sysbrain, and it allows satellites to read English-language technical documents, which in turn instruct the satellites on how to do things such as autonomously identifying and avoiding obstacles." Gee, why does this sound so incredibly familiar?  Skynet (Terminator) "In the Terminator storyline, Skynet was originally installed into the U.S. military mainframe to control the national arsenal on August 4, 1997. On August 29 it gained self-awareness[1] and the panicking operators, realizing the extent of its abilities, attempted to shut it down. Skynet perceived the attempt to deactivate it as an attack and came to the conclusion that all of humanity would attempt to destroy it. To defend itself, it determined that humanity should be exterminated." Alright so it's not in control of the national arsenal, but it's only a matter of time before one of these satellites read Snooki's book and convinces a military satellite that we need to be exterminated.

  My office PC has a one wireless network card and there are three available wifi connections: primary, backup and backup of a backup (grin). Is it possible for me to use all three simultaneously. If this results in an increase in bandwidth that's well and good, but primary reason is every now and then one of the network fails and i have to switch back and forth between the available networks by disconnecting, viewing available networks and connecting to next one hoping its running. Do i need more than one network card or a software e.g. a proxy.

• Mountable online storage (no syncing)

  I have a Linux VPS that I would like to turn into a media server. Like most cheap VPS's, it has a fairly small storage capacity. What I would like to do is attach the box to an online backup system such as SpiderOak or DropBox, where the files would reside and be directly accessible to either a webserver or media server software. Since the VPS hdd is small, I do not want the files to be synced to it. I would like a storage system that is online only. Ideally mountable like a network drive. Are there any services that suit my needs, or workarounds for services such as SpiderOak that do not require syncing?

• How do I delete a differential backup?

  I often like to create backups when testing the software I work on, and will sometimes create a differential backup if I want to be able to get back to multiple previous states. However, sometimes I realize that I forgot one thing I wanted to include in a differential backup, or I no longer need a previous differential backup. Sometimes I simply want to create a new scenario from the original base image and start working with a new series of differential backups. So I'd like to be able to delete some older differential backups so I don't get confused about which ones I'm using. But I can't find any way to delete just the differential backups, selectively or all at once.

• Commercial version of Freenet6

  I've been using Freenet6 from gogoNET to make my mobile device publicly accessible via IPv6. It works quite well except that the service is not as stable because it's non-commercial usage only as their servers are hosted for free by different operators around the world. Apparently gogoNET sells hardware called gogoSERVER which allows one to build a service similar to Freenet6. I've inquired their sales team, but they were unable to tell me which companies have a commercial, production-quality implementation of Freenet6. Specifically I'm looking for the following features in IPv6 service provider: Client-based IPv6 connectivity for mobile devices: gogoCLIENT (gw6c) is ideal for mobile devices since it allows a device to go online regardless of the device's location. API for account maintenance: so that we can create device accounts from our software Static IPv6 address: (or maybe I mean IPv4 address) by this I mean, just like gogoNET6 service (username.broker.freenet6.net), we want to provide our users with a permanent URL for their device Any info on commercial IPv6 service provider utilizing gogoSERVER is appreciated. • Security Alert For CVE-2010-4476 Released

  Hello, this is Eric Maurice again. Oracle just released a Security Alert with a fix for the vulnerability CVE-2010-4476, which affects Oracle Java SE and Oracle Java For Business. This vulnerability is present in Java running on servers as well as standalone Java desktop applications. Its successful exploitation by a malicious attacker can result in a complete denial of service for the affected servers. While only recently publicly disclosed, a number of Internet sites have since then reproduced details about this vulnerability, including exploit codes, which may result in allowing a malicious attacker to create a denial of service condition against the targeted system. Oracle therefore strongly recommends that affected organizations apply this fix as soon as possible. Please note that a fix for this vulnerability will also be included in the upcoming Java Critical Patch Update (Java SE and Java for Business Critical Patch Update - February 2011), which will be released on February 15th 2011. Note that the impact of this vulnerability on desktops is minimal: the affected applications or applets running in Internet browsers for example, might stop responding and may need to be restarted; however the desktop itself will not be compromised (i.e. no compromise at the desktop OS level). Oracle therefore recommends that consumers use the Java auto-update mechanism to get this fix. This will prompt them to install the latest version of the Java Runtime Environment 6 update 24 or higher (JRE), which includes the fix for this vulnerability. JRE 6 update 24 will also be distributed with the Java SE and Java for Business Critical Patch Update - February 2011. • Best way to install multiple versions of Apache, PHP and MySQL on a single FreeBSD host

  I want a test- and development-environment for web using Apache, PHP and MySQL. I need to be able to test a single web-application with multiple versions of PHP (5.2, 5.3, etc) and multiple versions of MySQL (5.0, 5.1, 5.5, etc). It shall be hosted on a FreeBSD server. My idea is to compile each version into a directory structure and running them on separate portnumbers. For example: opt/apache2.2-php5.2-mysql-5.0 (httpd on port 8801, mysql on port 8802) (directory contains each software, compiled and linked towards eachother) opt/apache2.2-php5.3-mysql-5.1 (httpd on port 8803, mysql on port 8804) (and so on) Any thoughts or suggestions of the best way to setup this type of environment?

  Rather than running a long cable from my Laptop to my stereo, I've been thinking for a while about getting one of those wireless devices that lets you transmit audio from your PC to a receiver plugged into the stereo. Then I realised I already have hardware that can potentially do this - I have an iPod Touch, and a Wi-Fi network in the house. So, is there some iPod Touch App that will let the iPod act as a Wi-Fi music receiver? And presumably, a corresponding piece of broadcast software for my (Windows Vista) Laptop?

• Optimising bare-metal hypervisor installation

  what is the best way to install a bare metal hypervisor (i.e. to host multiple VM's)? I spoke to a friend and he is using a HP server to host all his VMs with VMware ESXi, but he installed the VMWARE esxi software on a flash card. He can then use his full hard disk capacity from each drive for the VMs. Is this a pretty standard setup when configuring a bare-metal hypervisor? How do you guys do it, and what is best?

  Hey Guys, After installing vmware7, I tried to run a virtual machine with Mac OSX installed. When I tried to run this virtual machine I got an error message saying: Mac OS X is not supported with software virtualization. To run Mac OS X you need a host on which VMware Workstation supports hardware virtualization. I'v googled and found out that my processor (Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 Processor (2.93 GHz, 3 MB L2 cache, 1066 Mhz FSB)supports Hardware virtualization. Does anyone know how to enable this in order to get this virtual machine running?

• After installing VS 2010 - Generic Host Process For Win32 Services problem starts.

  After installing VS 2010 trial I am getting this error "Generic Host Process For Win32 Services Encountered A Problem and needs to close. When this message pops my computer just stuck and I can not even restart it normally. I have found one fix on net but after that fix I can not access my LAN. This fix change these values in registry. HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\netbt\parameters TransportBindName HKLM\Software\Microsoft\OLE EnableDCOM If I revert these registry changes then I again start getting 'Generic Host Process For Win32 Services' I have uninstall VS 2010 but this problem persist. This problem is not because of any virus. Any help to fix this or I have to re install Windows. Thanks.

• BSOD 0x000000f4(Probably caused by : wininit.exe)

  I have BSOD with 0x000000f4 code. It appears when system is not loaded at all. No new hardware where intalled. Only nvidia drivers where updated 3 days ago and they are up to date for now(version 296.10). System Health Report(perfmon /report) shows nothing interesting(only complained on disabled UAC) System is on SSD disk(WDC SSC-D0064SC-2100 B) Dump Spec: OS Name Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Version 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601 System Manufacturer Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. • ATI / AMD HIS HD 7870 Graphics card fan speed below 16% / 20% 26%

  I bought a AMD / ATI HIS HD 7870 to replace my old HD 4870. I noticed that the fan speed does not scale with the temperature: The fan speed does not get below 28% (read from catalyst / automatic fan speed) If I manually change it in the catalyst to 20% then it has the same speed than 28% : about 900-1000 rpm. With HIS iTurbo i manually can change the fan speed below 20%. But I noticed that changing the fan speed below 16% results in 3200 rpm. This is really stupid and annoying since my PC is a ultra silent PC and all fans are running with about 500 rpm when the PC is idle (windows / musik movies, etc.) Is there any way to change the fan speed to a reasonable speed like 500 rpm by software or hardware adapters (I really don't like to put a poti between the 12V line)

• Good SLA

  © 2011 Dov Trietsch What is a good SLA? I have frequently pondered about Service Level Agreements (SLA). Yesterday after ordering and while waiting, and waiting, and waiting for the food to arrive, I passed the time reading and re-reading the restaurant menu (again and again..) until I noticed their very interesting SLA.   Because (as promised) we had to wait even longer and the conversation around me was mostly in Russian, I ended doodling some of my thoughts of the menu, on the menu. People are both providers and consumers of services. As a service consumer – maybe the SLA above sucks – though to be honest, had the service been better, I would not have noticed this and you, the reader, would have been spared this rambling monograph. As a provider, I think it’s great! Because I provide services in the form of business software, I extend the idea to the following principles of design: 1: Wygiwyg. You guessed it. What You Get Is What You Get. 2: Ugiwugi.  U Get It When U Get It. How’s this for a developer friendly SLA? I’ll never be off the spec, or late. And BTW, the food was good, so when I finally got what I got, I liked it. That's All Folks!!
