  • What is the best way to work with large databases in Java depending on context?

    Hi guys. We are trying to figure out the best practice for working with very large DBs in Java. What we do is a kind of BI, i.e analyzing very large DBs, and using them to create intermediate DBs that represent intelligent knowledge of the DBs. We are currently using JDBC, and just preforming queries using a ResultSet. As more and more data is being created, we are wondering whether more appropriate ways exist for parsing and manipulating these large DBs: We need to support 'chunk' manipulation and not an entire DB at once(e.g. limit in JDBC, very poor performance) We do not need to be constantly connected since we are just pulling results and creating new tables of our own. We want to understand JDBC alternatives, with respect to advantages and disadvantages. Whether you think JDBC is the way to go or not, what are the best practices to go by depending on context (e.g. for large DBs queried in chunks) ?   • 24 Hours of PASS scheduling

    I have a new appreciation for Tom LaRock (@sqlrockstar), who is doing a tremendous job leading the organising committee for the 24 Hours of PASS event (Twitter: #24hop). We’ve just been going through the list of speakers and their preferences for time slots, and hopefully we’ve kept everyone fairly happy. All the submitted sessions (59 of them) were put up for a vote, and over a thousand of you picking your favourites. The top 28 sessions as voted were all included (24 sessions plus 4 reserves), and duplicates (when a single presenter had two sessions in the top 28) were swapped out for others. For example, both sessions submitted by Cindy Gross were in the top 28. These swaps were chosen by the committee to get a good balance of topics. Amazingly, some big names missed out, and even the top ten included some surprises. T-SQL, Indexes and Reporting featured well in the top ten, and in the end, the mix between BI, Dev and DBA ended up quite nicely too.   • White Paper on Analysis Services Tabular Large-scale Solution #ssas #tabular

    Since the first beta of Analysis Services 2012, I worked with many companies designing and implementing solutions based on Analysis Services Tabular. I am glad that Microsoft published a white paper about a case-study using one of these scenarios: An Analysis Services Case Study: Using Tabular Models in a Large-scale Commercial Solution. Alberto Ferrari is the author of the white paper and many people contributed to it. The final result is a very technical document based on a case study, which provides a level of detail that I don’t see often in other case studies (which are usually more marketing-oriented). This white paper has the following structure: Requirements (data model, capacity planning, client tool) Options considered (SQL Server Columnstore Indexes, SSAS Multidimensional, SSAS Tabular) Data Model optimizations (memory compression, query performance, scalability) Partitioning and Processing strategy for near real-time latency Hardware selection (NUMA analysis, Azure VM tests) Scalability tests (estimation of maximum users per node) If you are in charge of evaluating Tabular as analytical engine, or if you have to design your solution based on Tabular, this white paper is a must read. But if you just want to increase your knowledge of Analysis Services, you will find a lot of useful technical information. That said, my favorite quote of the document is the following one, funny but true: […] After several trials, the clear winner was a video gaming machine that one guy on the team used at home. That computer outperformed any available server, running twice as fast as the server-class machines we had in house. At that point, it was clear that the criteria for choosing the server would have to be expanded a bit, simply because it would have been impossible to convince the boss to build a cluster of gaming machines and trust it to serve our customers.  But, honestly, if a business has the flexibility to buy gaming machines (assuming the machines can handle capacity) – do this.   • SQL SERVER – What is the Maximum Relational Database Size Supported by Single Instance?

    I often get asked following question? “How much data SQL Server can handle?” Every single time when I get this question – I ask back following question - “How much data your storage system can handle?” The reason I ask this question back is because in reality for enterprise systems the limitation of storage is no more an issue. The Matter of the fact most of the database is now a days limited by the size of the storage system. SQL Server is enterprise system and it is very mature product. Even though if you still want to know what is the actual limit here is the answer. SQL Server 2008R2, 2012 and 2014 have maximum capacity of 524 PB (Petabyte) in the Enterprise, BI and Standard edition. SQL Server Express has a limitation of 10 GB due to its nature. I guess, now when you look at my question it will make sense that it is all depending on the size of your storage system. I personally believe at this point of time 524 PB is quite a huge data, but we never know after 10 years when we read this blog post, we all may think what was I thinking actually.   • Subscription based eCommerce Site selling Physical Goods

    I want to implement a system where customers can buy physical products as subscription with recurring billing. Customers will come to my site, visit product page and buy stuff. They need to register an account before purchasing. After registration they will be forwarded to payment processor for payment and after successful payment they will be returned back to my site. Requirement: I dont want to use Paypal as a payment processor. It will be recurring payment on monthly, quarterly, bi-annual or annual basis. Customers can login to my site in order to view their Order History, Profile Management and can edit their Billing and/or Shipping details. Customers can cancel their Subscription any time after login to their account on my site. Plan: Currently I am using wordpress with WooCommerce plugin for eCommerce functionality. I am planning to use Amazon as a payment processor. I have searched WooCommerce Extension Drectory and found WC Subscription extension that can be used for my site. But I just confirmed from the Support WC Subscription only support recurring payment with Paypal and Stripe, no other payment processor is supported at the moment. Questions: According to my need, what will be the best solution? I am open to switch the platform from Wordpress to something else that can fulfill my requirement.

    I'm getting this warning msg. in Google webmaster tools Incorrect rel-alternate-hreflang implementation In particular, there seems to be a problem with missing or incorrect bi-directional linking (when page A links with hreflang to page B, there must be a link back from B to A as well). This msg. seems pretty straight forward, but when checking their example pages, I'm not finding anything wrong. I'm using alternate for translation of main site menu, titles, etc.. In each page I have this: <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="http://mydomain.com/page" /> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="jp" href="http://ja.mydomain.com/page" /> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="ko" href="http://ko.mydomain.com/page" /> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="th" href="http://th.mydomain.com/page" /> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="es" href="http://es.mydomain.com/page" /> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="pt" href="http://pt.mydomain.com/page" /> I've double checked this exists in all the 6 pages. This is the first time I've seen this msg although I've implemented this at least 6 months ago, and implementation hasn't changed. Is there any way to check a specific set of pages for these things? Am I missing something in my implementation? We're auto-redirecting people from a location to their specific language, and give them an option to manually change this. I've also just found out about the suggestion for Vary HTTP header - is that relevant and important here?

    I received this request in many courses, messages and also forum discussions: having an Analysis Services Tabular model, it would be nice being able to extract a correspondent PowerPivot data model. In order of priority, here are the specific feature people (including me) would like to see: Create an empty PowerPivot workbook with the same data model of a Tabular model Change the connections of the tables in the PowerPivot workbook extracting data from the Tabular data model Every table should have an EVALUATE ‘TableName’ query in DAX Apply a filter to data extracted from every table For example, you might want to extract all data for a single country or year or customer group Using the same technique of applying filter used for role based security would be nice Expose an API to automate the process of creating a PowerPivot workbook Use case: prepare one workbook for every employee containing only its data, that he can use offline Common request for salespeople who want a mini-BI tool to use in front of the customer/lead/supplier, regardless of a connection available This feature would increase the adoption of PowerPivot and Tabular (and, therefore, Business Intelligence licenses instead of Standard), and would probably raise the sales of Office 2013 / Office 365 driven by ISV, who are the companies who requests this feature more. If Microsoft would do this, it would be acceptable it only works on Office 2013. But if a third-party will do that, it will make sense (for their revenues) to cover both Excel 2010 and Excel 2013. Another important reason for this feature is that the “Offline cube” feature that you have in Excel is not available when your PivotTable is connected to a Tabular model, but it can only be used when you connect to Analysis Services Multidimensional.     Last week's article, Displaying a Grid of Data in ASP.NET MVC, showed, step-by-step, how to display a grid of data in an ASP.NET MVC application. Last week's article started with creating a new ASP.NET MVC application in Visual Studio, then added the Northwind database to the project and showed how to use Microsoft's Linq-to-SQL tool to access data from the database. The article then looked at creating a Controller and View for displaying a list of product information (the Model). This article builds on the demo application created in Displaying a Grid of Data in ASP.NET MVC, enhancing the grid to include bi-directional sorting. If you come from an ASP.NET WebForms background, you know that the GridView control makes implementing sorting as easy as ticking a checkbox. Unfortunately, implementing sorting in ASP.NET MVC involves a bit more work than simply checking a checkbox, but the quantity of work isn't significantly greater and with ASP.NET MVC we have more control over the grid and sorting interface's layout and markup, as well as the mechanism through which sorting is implemented. With the GridView control, sorting is handled through form postbacks with the sorting parameters - what column to sort by and whether to sort in ascending or descending order - being submitted as hidden form fields. In this article we'll use querystring parameters to indicate the sorting parameters, which means a particular sort order can be indexed by search engines, bookmarked, emailed to a colleague, and so on - things that are not possible with the GridView's built-in sorting capabilities. I still think that in the plethora of new data access technologies that have come out since, the basic core ADO.NET fundamentals are still every developer must know, and sadly they do not know. So for some crazy reason, I still see every project make the same data access related mistakes over and over again. Anyway, the challenge is that on top of the core ADO.NET fundamentals, there is a vast array of other new technologies you must learn. The important of which is Entity Framework. So, I was asked to, and I was pleased to be the technical reviewer for Microsoft ADO.NET 4, Step by Step, by Tim Patrick. This book introduces the reader not just to the basic ADO.NET principles, but also Entity Framework, LINQ to SQL, and WCF Data Services. So what you may ask is a SharePoint guy like me doing with such interest in ADO.NET land? Well, that’s what the other side says, what is a hardcore data access sorta guy doing in SharePoint land? :). I have authored/co-authored 4 books so far on data access (1,2,3,4), and one on pure SharePoint, and now one on SharePoint 2010 BI. These are very intertwined topics. And LINQ to SQL and LINQ to SharePoint are almost copy paste of each other. WCF Data services are literally the same in both. And many Entity Framework concepts also apply within SharePoint.     I have been watching 3 videos put together by SSIS team on Dependency Analyser. I am happy Microsoft have made an effort to do something about it. I have been asking for this feature since SQL 2005 TAP. Still a long way to go before they catch up with competetion. It looks like it currently supports SSIS and SQL dependencies. Release note states its still in development and support only limited sets of tasks. You still would not know the impact of dropping a column on cubes, reports etc. I hope that changes by the time RTM comes out. I am struggling to understand why it is impossible to do it across the solution. Ideally if you have a BI solution which holds DB, SSIS, SSAS, SSRS & PPS projects I would like to right click and execute a dependency analyser, stating what impact would have if I drop / rename a specific column. Has anyone else looked at it and what are your thoughts? ThanksSutha

  • Software development process for a part time University project for 1 developer?

    I will be doing a part time University project soon and the time frame for it is around 8 months with approximately 10-15 hours a week spent working on it, with a review by a tutor each quarter. My question is what software development process would you recommend using when the course requires you to work on your own in order to manage yourself as well as the project? I wanted to use a weekly or bi-weekly iterative approach to my work but a lot of the processes seem tailored to teams of people. I am looking at XP (Extreme Programming) OR Scrum as something that is less than the norm for University work but again Scrum I don't know a lot about yet, and a question I have is; can you say you are doing XP without pair-programming? because my tutor seems to think that I have to stick to all the practices otherwise I can't do it (nevermind if I am working alone). We can have external user input as well but due to the small timescales with part time work it may be more beneficial for myself to be the user as well, which is not what I prefer considering how I can get lost in the design.

    In openGl ES and the World of 3D - why use the invers matrix? The thing is that I dont have any intuition to, why it is used, therefore please correct me: As fare as I understand, it is used in shaders - and can help you to figure out the opposite direction of the normals? Invers in ordinary numbers is like; The product of a number and its multiplicative inverse is 1. Observe that 3/5 * 5/3 = 1. In a matrix this will give you the Identity Matrix, which is the base coordinate system or the orion of the World space - right. But the invers is - some other coordinate system? You can use the transpose(Row-major order to Column-major order) of a square matrix to find the inverted matrix, as calculating the invers is process heavy - and the transpose is giving you the inverted matrix as a bi product? Again, I am looking for getting some intuition of this - and therefore be able to use it as intended. Thank you for any reply that will guide me in the right direction. Regards

    Yesterday I spent the longest day at this TechEd: we talked with many people at Community Night until 9pm and I have to say that just a few months after Analysis Services 2012 has been released, there are many people already using it. And the adoption of PowerPivot is starting to be quite large. Many new ideas and challenging coming from several different real world scenarios. I was tired but really happy. Alberto presented his Many-to-Many Relationships in BISM Tabular session that was in the same time slot of the BI Power Hour. For this reason, very few people attended Alberto’s session so I think many will watch the recorded session (it should be available within a few days). So what about today? I’ll spend some time at Technical Learning Center area (full schedule here) but the most important event today will be the Querying multi-billion rows with many to many relationships in SSAS Tabular (xVelocity) at the Private Cloud, Public Cloud and Data Platform Theater in the Technical Learning Center area (next to the SQL Server 2012 zone).  Why you should attend? Mainly because you will see live demo over 4 billion rows table with many-to-many relationships involved in complex queries.   • How much overhead is there in persistent connections?

    Ok so I'm musing over a little side project I want to start. Essentially its a multi-session web based FTP client. Multi-session in that you can log into several FTP servers at the same time and perform operations like moving a file from one FTP server to another. I'm doing this mainly to brush up on the new webdev technologies, particularly websockets. I'm using node.js + socket.io to keep a persistent bi-directional connection between the web browser and the web server. The web server will also have persistent connections to each FTP server the user has logged into. So if there are 100 concurrent users each logged into 5 ftp accounts, the web server will have 100 websocket connections + 500 ftp connections. Is servicing 600 connections a lot? I know it depends on the hardware resources of the server but is something like this doable on a budget? Are there more efficient means of doing something like this? I know its unlikely that this project will really get popular but I want it to scale well regardless. Thanks for any help, I've still got a lot to learn.

    Title might be seem vague, so let me tell you a little bit history what i am trying to clarify question. I have been hired as a consultant for a corporate's small developement divison ( The company also owns a couple of software dev. companies) My ex manager runs a BI team, with reportes, analyts and developers. He asked me to evaluate overall design, software developement process and code quality . Here what i found, Lots of copy/paste code everywhere ( no reuse ) Even though they have everything TFS, VS Ultimate etc, No Build process , No Cruise Control.net / team city... No unit tests Web Pages with 3700 lines of code, Lots of huge functions ( which can be divided into smaller one's ) No naming convention both db and c# code No 3r party or open source project No IoC No Seperation Of Concerns No Code Quality Check ( NDepend or FxCope or nothing ) No Code Review No Communication within the team They claim they wrote an application framework ( 6 months 3 persons), but I would hardly call a framework ( of course no unit test, there are some but all commented out). Framework contains 14 projects but there are some projects with 1 file 20 lines of code . Honestly, what people are doing fixing bug all thr day( which will provide more bugs eventually), they are kind of isolated from community, some team members even dont know github or stackoverflow they probably went there with google but they dont know about it. So here is question, Is This list ok ? Or am i being picky? Since I dont have any grudge against them, I just want to be fair, honest and I would like to hear you suggestions, before I would submit this list.
