    With Oracle vs Google trial, it seems that Java is not entirely Open and free (as free software) as I expected. Although there exists completely free/open JVM, it's hard to know what is a copyright infringement with Java, and what is not. So I'd like to know if there is a completely Open and free language with open and free IDE (Eclipse-like) out there, Object Oriented if possible, and able to make window-based applications for the main OSs (Linux, Mac, Windows).

  • Where to go from here, how to improve / learn more

    I finished University around 4 years ago double degree in Software Eng/Comp Sci. Got my first job at a startup in my final year, was with them for 2.5 years then started my own business. So far everything is going great, lots of clients and stead work etc, but coming right out of uni and into a start up I never had any form or senior software engineer guiding my work or suggesting improvements etc... Whats the best way for me to improve & learn more? Books? MS Exams? Other? I develop in C#, ASP.NET/MVC. Update The problem isn't really with releasing products, I've released quite a few which are up and running with customers happy. It's more with quality of code, best practices, how do I know something I am code is correct, it may work but there may be ways of coding it much more efficiently or by adhering to some kind of standard Cheers for any responses!     Are there any alternatives to voxel based terrains? Such terrain should be fully destructable, allow for arches, overhangs, preserve sharp features where needed and keep consistent topology. Maybe you can explain the problem that makes you ask this question? Voxel based terrain is basically just using a 3D grid of data to store data. There are lots of ways to render that data, but it doesn't get much simpler for storing it. – Byte56 Current isosurface extraction methods aren't most effective/bug-free. Cubical Marching Squares seem to solve most of the issues, however it is a relatively new method and there aren't too many resources about it. (I've found single university paper) Even if we stick to CMS, when we want to add multi-material support, we can either divide surface into multiple meshes, or pass a texture array or texture atlas to shaders, then we are limited to set amount of textures and additionally increase memory-usage alot.

  • Cant find one particular wireless network. Worked before, but sudenly stopt working.

    My first question here. My problem is: I cant find my wireless network at home. Situation: It worked fine 7 days ago. It works with a cable(wierd). I find the network on my ipad/phone. I can connect to wireless hotspot network form my phone and wireless at my university, and it works fine. I can connect to the network in windows What I have tried: Tried this Strange network issue; works on windows, but not on ubuntu, works on campus wireless, but not at home (removing resolve.conf). Hardware and software: I have a Broadcom card Use dual boot ubuntu 12.04 - windows 7 Things I did to make wireless work: blacklist brcmsmac blacklist bcma blacklist b43 blacklist ssb Can anyone help me? I'm about to kill myself(not literary)!! I'm not that good in linux so go gentle on me:)

    I've been working on a project in Flex for three years now without unit testing. The simple reason for that is the fact that I just didn't realize the importance of unit testing when being at the beginning of studies at university. Now my attitude towards testing changed completely and therefore I want to introduce it to the existing project (about 25000LOC). In order to do it, there are two approaches to choose from: 1) Discard the existing codebase and start from scratch with TDD 2) Write the tests and try to make them pass by changing the existing code Well, I would appreciate not having to write everything from scratch but I think by doing this, the design would be much better.   • Beginner's steps to game programming [on hold]

    I have graduated from university less than 6 months ago and became a B.Eng in Software Engineering. I have moderate understanding of programming experience from languages like C++, Java and C#. But mostly on simple desktop and mobile applications. I've tried some simple Pong-like games but never finished even the smallest game. I have a couple of nice ideas growing (IMO, at least...) in my mind but don't really know where to begin. 2D is way to go, of course, at the beginning. I just want to hear from more experienced game devs how they started out. Should I make a rough outline of the core idea and mechanics and start working on a prototype of core gameplay? Or should I just practice more by making Pong, Asteroids and that sort of games and get an understanding of those before moving on? Thanks to all!

  • Need instructions on how to create wpa_supplicant.conf and add fast_reauth=0 to it

    Like many other natty users on a university/academic network, I'm experiencing annoying frequent disconnects/hangs/delays. See, for instance here. I would like to learn how to add fast_reauth=0 to the wpa_supplicant.conf file. This file, it seems, does not exit by default, and needs to be manually created first: README You will need to make a configuration file, e.g. /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf, with network configuration for the networks you are going to use. Further, I installed wpa_gui which probably needs to be launched with parameters, else it's pretty blank... What I'm hoping for is this: That creating a wpa_supplicant.conf file with fast_reauth=0 in it, saving it to the relevant path, will work and make my uni wireless (more or even completely) stable. I read mixed reviews about wicd (as an alternative to the network manager). Also note that on my basic wlan at home (with bog-standard wpa encryption) the connection is stable. Thanks!

  • What technology(s)would be suitable for the front end part of a Java web game?

    As asked in a previous question, I'm looking to create a small MMO that will be deployed onto GAE. I'm confused about what technologies I could use for the user interface, I've considered the following JSP Pages - I've got experience with JSP/JSTL and I would find this easy to work with, it would require the user having to "submit" the page each time they perform an action so may become a little clumsey for players. Applet - I could create an applet that sits on the front end and communicates to the back end game engine, however I'm not sure how good this method would be and have not used applets since university.. What other options do I have? I don't have any experience in Flash/Flex so there would be a big learning curve there. Are there any other Java based options I may be able to use? My game will be text based, I may use some images, but I'm not intending to have any animations/graphics etc Thanks

    I know that it's best practice to stay safe, and that we should always prevent others from directly accessing a class' properties. I hear this all the time from university professors, and I also see this all the time in a lot of source code released on the App Hub. In fact, professors say that they will actually take marks off for every variable that gets declared public. Now, this leaves me always declaring variables as private. No matter what. Even if each of these variables were to have both a getter and a setter. But here's the problem: it's tedious work. I tend to quickly loose interest in a project every time I need to have a variable in a class that could have simply been declared public instead of private with a getter and a setter. So my question is, do I really need to declare all my variables private? Or could I declare some variables public whenever they require both a getter and a setter?
