  • Workarounds for supporting MVVM in the Silverlight ContextMenu service

    As I discussed in my last post, some of the Silverlight controls does not support MVVM quite well out of the box without specific customizations. The Context Menu is another control that requires customizations for enabling data binding on the menu options. There are a few things that you might want to expose as view model for a menu item, such as the Text, the associated icon or the command that needs to be executed. That view model should look like this, public class MenuItemModel { public string Name { get; set; } public ICommand Command { get; set; } public Image Icon { get; set; } public object CommandParameter { get; set; } } This is how you can modify the built-in control to support data binding on the model above, public class CustomContextMenu : ContextMenu { protected override DependencyObject GetContainerForItemOverride() { CustomMenuItem item = new CustomMenuItem(); Binding commandBinding = new Binding("Command"); item.SetBinding(CustomMenuItem.CommandProperty, commandBinding);   Binding commandParameter = new Binding("CommandParameter"); item.SetBinding(CustomMenuItem.CommandParameterProperty, commandParameter);   return item; } }   public class CustomMenuItem : MenuItem { protected override DependencyObject GetContainerForItemOverride() { CustomMenuItem item = new CustomMenuItem();   Binding commandBinding = new Binding("Command"); item.SetBinding(CustomMenuItem.CommandProperty, commandBinding);   return item; } } The change is very similar to the one I made in the TreeView for manually data binding some of the Menu item properties to the model.   • Cannot use second display with 12.04 and Intel 2000/3000

    I am unable to get anything to display on my second monitor, or even get the system to recognize that there is a second screen. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Gigabyte GA-H61M-S2PV, revision 2.0 box. The integrated chipset is an Intel 2000/3000, and there are both a D-Dub and a DVI-D display ports on the MB. This is the first operating system I have installed on this system. I have a second monitor plugged into the DVI-D port via a DVI-D to D-Sub adapter. I cannot verify that the motherboard or adapter were/are working, short of installing windows to test the theory. When I go into the "System Settings - Displays" control window, it shows one display. I have rebooted with the second monitor attached, and I have perused the BIOS settings in case it might have been disabled. So far, I have had no indication that the second monitor is recognized, not even a flicker at power on. If I swap monitors and cables between the DVI-D and D-Dub ports, the other monitor lights up, so I know the monitor and video cable are not the issue. Any suggestions would be appreciated.     I'm using Netbook Remix 10.04 now. I'm having the 10.10 alternate iso with me. If I use that iso to upgrade, will I lose my netbook version? I've seen in some forums that the upgrade resulted in a change from netbook version to desktop version. Updated on 15/12/2010 I upgraded the OS from 10.04 to 10.10. But I'm getting an error like this after restart: modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.35-22-generic/modules.dep: No such file or directory I searched in the forums and got a solution like this: Open Terminal gksudo gedit /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf change the line MODULES=most to MODULES=dep Then use Synaptic (SystemAdministrationSynaptic Package Manager) to reinstall initramfs-tools. I'll be definitely trying this later. After that when the system tries to login, my screen starts flashing with just the ubuntu netbook desktop wallpaper on the screen. No other options will be available. It will be flashing continuosly. If I press the power button then one window comes up with options like Shut down, Restart, Hibernate etc. And the screen won't stop flashing either. I've uploaded a 1 min video.     I am going to buy Logitech C510 HD webcam and I just checked on other questions here on AskUbuntu that it works out of the box with cheese. My question is can it be limited in any functionality that I would like to do with it? I would like it to be used with everything - Skype, Gtalk video chat, Facebook, Youtube etc I would like the ability to record or do a video call in lesser resolution video (its a 720p one). Also since I read that I should have a Core2Duo 2.2Ghz for 720p but I have a 2.0Ghz one, would it be possible for me to first record it and then encode it after recording if my processor really start giving issue when doing on-the-fly encoding? Anything else that I should consider? I also have a ATI HD 4850 512MB card, if it can help in encoding on-the-fly or is there a chance that my graphics card alone can handle it and those specs were just for a system without a graphics card? I believe so. Also, I got no worries in dealing with console, if I have to do some of the things above in terminal. Other possible significant details: I have a dual screen setup 29" (1360X768) & 22" (1680X1050) which might be using some good power from GPU and I have 2GB DDR2 800Mhz RAM.

  • Hybrid Graphics on Ubuntu 12.04 switching to discrete

    I have a Sony Vaio VPCCB-27FX with hybrid graphics. Using vgaswitcheroo enables me to switch my discrete card off to save power. Now when i want to switch to the discrete card for performance, my system freezes. I already tried logging out and killing x with service lightdm stop, but still, it freezes as soon as I echo DIS > switch. typing blindly, echo IGD > switch returns me to my console where it reads [ 179.555171] i915: switched off, but it seems the discrete card never gets switched on... running echo DDIS > switch gives me the following: [540....] [drm:atop_op_jump] *ERROR* atombios stuck in loop for more than 5secs aborting [540....] [drm:atom_execute_table_locked] *ERROR* atombios stuck executing CEE2 (len 62, WS 0, PS 0) @ 0xCEFE [540....] [drm:atom_execute_table_locked] *ERROR* atombios stuck executing BBF6 (len 1036, WS 4, PS 0) @ 0xBCF3 [540....] [drm:atom_execute_table_locked] *ERROR* atombios stuck executing BB8C (len 76, WS 0, PS 0) @ 0xBB94 [541....] [drm:r600_RING_TEST] *ERROR* radeon: ring test failed (scratch(0x8504)=0xFFFFFFFF) [541....] [drm:evergreen_resume] *ERROR* evergreen startup failed on resume after that, the atombios part repeats a few times. also, the terminal locks up again and sysrq+REISUB is my only rescue.   • Trying to install Proprietory Nvidia Graphics Drivers

    After reading and trying many different suggestions for some hours, I returned to this how-to: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia The first problem I encounter is how to identify which of the listed drivers support my Nvidia GEForce 630M graphics card. Following the links doesn't really help, since it is not stated there either (except where support for a new driver was added later which is explicitly stated, but the original devices covered are not). However, even if I knew, if it doesn't appear in the 'Additional Drivers' dialogue (see below), how will I install it? Second Issue: The article goes on to say that available drivers for my hardware are usually listed in 'Additional Drivers'. In my case, they aren't. Unfortunately, it doesn't tell me how to correct that or work around it? I've checked the bios and there is no way offered there to disable the integrated graphics, only the Nvidia graphics. I've also tried each available option in this: $ sudo update-alternatives --config i386-linux-gnu_gl_conf My system is an Acer Aspire 4752G bought May 2012. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04LTS. uname -a : 3.2.0-38-generic-pae #61-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 19 12:39:51 UTC 2013 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux It's 64bit hardware but I installed 32bit OS for greater software compatibility. [ 28.886] (EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found) The reason for wanting the proprietor y drivers is because my laptop comes with 3D accelerated graphics adaptor and so rather than confining myself to struggling with the on-board graphics, I would rather use it. I also want to experiment with using it for bitmining (which uses the GPU's for computing power).

  • Questions to ask to ensure someone understands programming? (and iOS)

    So, I've been tutoring my friend for 2 years. Most people learn programming on their own in 3-6 months, (sans algorithms). It's confusing 'cause he'll run anywhere I tell him to, understands how to read C and C++ honestly better than the average college student, and he'll modify and repeat anything I do... but for the love of god he doesn't move on to new things and he still has test anxiety. I've recently realized he's copied and toyed with existing, but not once gained an understanding of why. I was under the impression he was learning fast because he could write it, but when you say "Make a function that takes an NSString" and he says "How?" and I say "The same way you make ANY function that takes any parameter, NSString is just a type like int" and all I hear is "No, it's an NSString, it's a special thing." and we get into an arguing match 'cause I'm like "It's just a class like any other class, you've used them for months now" and blah... I've subconsciously avoided comprehension questions because of this. Anyway, if you have him copy a program and say "Just initialize it" "Where?" "I don't care, didLoad or initWithCoder or Awake from nib, anywhere it gets initialized" and "No, it has to be exactly where you had it!" "No it doesn't!" I'm sick of this, but he won't give up. So I'm done avoiding these yelling matches and becoming a sadist from now on. I would like some help in finding questions to ask him that force him to understand what he's doing. I'd like some help and any resources I can find. CQuestions looked like a good site, but now I need some iPhone stuff. For example: *What do properties do? How are they changed? How do you change the name of the getter? *Why are Booleans inefficent? What advantage does int have over a boolean and how does the bit-shift operator help? *What does Copy do to a string? *What's the difference between a view controller and a uiview? *Write a program from memory that displays blah on screen, and flashes each view one by one. From beginner up to intermediate, hobbyist with some algebra at most. I'm just looking for resources to work with. I left in backstory so you know to "twist" the questions so he doesn't know he's supposed to init a variable here or there, but has to figure it out, and learn why it goes "here" or that "anywhere is fine as long as it's". Sample programs, anything. I'm relatively open about this because, being a programmer, I seriously doubt he's the only one who has this issue. I'd like to know how others have overcome similar. What made things "click"? for you? Did you have a hard time finding answers on Google, and how did you learn a better way to find what you were looking for? (He's so exact, he'll search for how to write a checkers program with color X and Y inside a uiview, as his search string, instead of breaking it up into components, I need help with that too, and believe it is related). This type of problem has to remind one of us of someone they know. So, Exercises to force them to think? Ways we overcame this thing in the past? I greatly appreciate any help.

Alberto presented his Many-to-Many Relationships in BISM Tabular session that was in the same time slot of the BI Power Hour. For this reason, very few people attended Alberto’s session so I think many will watch the recorded session (it should be available within a few days). So what about today?   • SQL Server Database Settings

    For those using Data Relationship Management on Oracle DB this does not apply, but for those using Microsoft SQL Server it is highly recommended that you run with Snapshot Isolation Mode. The Data Governance module will not function correctly without this mode enabled. All new Data Relationship Management repositories are created with this mode enabled by default. This mode makes SQL Server (2005+) behave more like Oracle DB where readers simply see older versions of rows while a write is in progress, instead of readers being blocked by locks while a write takes place. Many common sources of deadlocks are eliminated. For example, if one user starts a 5 minute transaction updating half the rows in a table, without snapshot isolation everyone else reading the table will be blocked waiting. With snapshot isolation, they will see the rows as they were before the write transaction started. Conversely, if the readers had started first, the writer won't be stuck waiting for them to finish reading... the writes can begin immediately without affecting the current transactions. To make this change, make sure no one is using the target database (eg: put it into single-user mode), then run these commands: ALTER DATABASE [DB] SET ALLOW_SNAPSHOT_ISOLATION ONALTER DATABASE [DB] SET READ_COMMITTED_SNAPSHOT ON Please make sure you coordinate with your DBA team to ensure tempdb is appropriately setup to support snapshot isolation mode, as the extra row versions are stored in tempdb until the transactions are committed. Let me take this opportunity to extremely strongly highly recommend that you use solid state storage for your databases with appropriate iSCSI, FiberChannel, or SAN bandwidth. The performance gains are significant and there is no excuse for not using 100% solid state storage in 2013. Actually unless you need to store petabytes of archival data, there is no excuse for using hard drives in any systems, whether laptops, desktops, application servers, or database servers. The productivity benefits alone are tremendous, not to mention power consumption, heat, etc.

  • Managing software projects - advice needed

    I work for a large government department as part of an IT team that manages and develops websites as well as stand alone web applications. We’re running in to problems somewhere in the SDLC that don’t rear their ugly head until time and budget are starting to run out. We try to be “Agile” (software specifications are not as thorough as possible, clients have direct access to the developers any time they want) and we are also in a reasonably peculiar position in that we are not allowed to make profit from the services we provide. We only service the divisions within our government department, and can only charge for the time and effort we actually put in to a project. So if we deliver a project that we have over-quoted on, we will only invoice for the actual time spent. Our software specifications are not as thorough as they could be, but they always include at a minimum: Wireframe mockups for every form view A data dictionary of all field inputs Descriptions of any business rules that affect the system Descriptions of the outputs I’m new to software management, but I’ve overseen enough software projects now to know that as soon as users start observing demos of the system, they start making a huge amount of requests like “Can we add a few more fields to this report.. can we redesign the look of this interface.. can we send an email at this part of the workflow.. can we take this button off this view.. can we make this function redirect to a different screen.. can we change some text on this screen… can we create a special account where someone can log in and get access to X… this report takes too long to run can it be optimised.. can we remove this step in the workflow… there’s got to be a better image we can put here…” etc etc etc. Some changes are tiny and can be implemented reasonably quickly.. but there could be up to 50-100 or so of such requests during the course of the SDLC. Other change requests are what clients claim they “just assumed would be part of the system” even if not explicitly spelled out in the spec. We are having a lot of difficulty managing this process. With no experienced software project managers in our team, we need to come up with a better way to both internally identify whether work being requested is “out of spec”, and be able to communicate this to a client in such a manner that they can understand why what they are asking for is “extra” work. We need a way to track this work and be transparent with it. In the spirit of Agile development where we are not spec'ing software systems in to the ground and back again before development begins, and bearing in mind that clients have access to any developer any time they want it, I am looking for some tips and pointers from experienced software project managers on how to handle this sort of "scope creep" problem, in tracking it, being transparent with it, and communicating it to clients such that they understand it.   • Ubuntu 12.04 Freezes w/ Ethernet Unplugged + Wireless Drops (Acer Aspire 5516)

    Ubuntu 12.04-12.10 32/64 freezes or won't boot if the Ethernet cable is unplugged and will not hold a wireless connection. Here is my scenario... Laptop: Acer Aspire 5516 Wireless card: Broadcom BCM4312 Ubuntu 12.04 32/64 Issues Unity 3d won't load without the Ethernet cable plugged in. If I let it load with Ethernet plugged in, it will freeze once I disconnect the cable. Unity 2d will load without the Ethernet cable plugged. In Unity 2d, wireless cannot hold a connection. I can connect to a Wireless network, but when I try to use it (i.e. open a browser), it disconnects. I can reconnect by disabling wireless (uncheck Enable Wireless), re-enable wireless, and reconnect. But, it will disconnect again once I start using it. Ubuntu 12.10 Issues Since 12.10 only gives me the option to load 3d (I assume), I experience the same thing as the first issue in 12.04. Attempted Solutions Enable networking/LAN in BIOS Set LAN first in boot priority in BIOS Remove STA wireless driver (bcmwl-kernel-source) and install b43 low power driver (firmware-b43-lpphy-installer). Remove default Network Manager and install Wicd. So far, I have had no luck with fixing this issue. Does anyone have any further suggestions?

    PROBLEM: We have N physical machines(PMs) each with ram Ri, cpu Ci and a set of currently scheduled VMs each with ram requirement ri and ci respectively Moving(Migrating) any VM from one PM to other has a cost associated which depends on its ram ri. A PM with no VMs is shut down to save power. Our target is to minimize the weighted sum of (N,migration cost) by migrating some VMs i.e. minimize the number of working PMs as well as not to degrade the service level due to excessive migrations. My Approach: Brute Force approach is choosing the minimum loaded PM and try to fit its VMs to other PMs by First Fit Decreasing algorithm or we can select the victim PMs and target PMs based on their loading level and shut down victims if possible by moving their VMs to targets. I tried this Greedy approach on the Data of Baadal(IIT-D cloud) but It isn't giving promising results. I have also tried to study the Ant colony optimization for dynamic VM consolidating but was unable to understand very much.   • Is there a precedent for the license on a compiler restricting the kind of development you can use it for?

    It was recently let slip that the new EULA for Delphi XE3 will prohibit Client Server development with the Professional edition without the additional purchase of a Client Server license pack. This is not to say the Professional version will lack the features, but the license will specifically prohibit the developer from using the compiler for a specific class of development, even with 3rd party or home grown solutions. So my question is if there is a precedent of a compiler or similar creative tool prohibiting the class of work you can use it for. Specifically a commercially licensed "professional" tool like Delphi XE3. Also, would such a restriction be legally enforceable? I know there have been educational edition or starter edition tools in the past that have restricted their use for commercial purposes, but those were not sold as "professional" tools. Also I know that a lot of computing software and equipment will have a disclaimer that it is not for use in "life support equipment" or "nuclear power" but that is more of avoiding liability than prohibiting activity. Seems like I recall Microsoft putting a restriction in FrontPage that you couldn't use it to create a web site that reflected poorly on Microsoft, but they pulled that restriction before it could be tested legally.

  • IRQ Conflicts Causing Video Card and Boot Problems?

    tl;dr - I have 4 devices sharing 1 IRQ. Is this bad and how do I tell the BIOS to stop it? Background: I have an old Dell GX280 dual Pentium 4 that I (semi) resurrected last weekend with an installation of Ubuntu 12.04. Everything was going fine the first several hours until a problem that plagued me when WinXP was on that machine happened -- it froze. Completely froze. None of the myriad of ways I have found here on askubuntu helped me to regain control except a long-press of the power button to shut it off. Clearly, this wasn't a software/WinXP issue. After much googling, I found that hardware conflicts can often cause this sort of total lock-up and with all the odd blocks of yellow and flecks of color showing on my screen (both WinXP and Ubuntu) I figured my old GeForce 7600 was failing and causing me these odd issues. (A good canned-air dusting of the entire interior fixed the color fleck problem) Again, through much googling and numerous answers found on askubuntu, I somehow stumbled my way onto the lshw command. After going through it, line by line, I found that I have four devices sharing IRQ 16: eth0, wlan0, ide0 (DVD-RW), and my video card. In hindsight, I can recall weird instances of my Ethernet connection to another computer not working when I thought it should. I never full troubleshot those issues so it could be a coincidence. The other thing that has been plaguing me since installing Ubuntu (wasn't there during WinXP) has been periodic moments of my monitor getting no signal from Ubuntu during boot. The first couple days, it would disappear after the Dell boot screen and reappear at Ubuntu login. Now, it disappears after the Dell boot screen and doesn't return at all -- I have to hit F12 where I can load a safe mode version of Ubuntu and get more details like dmesg and lsdev. I also ran memtest86 overnight and woke up to zero errors, so failing RAM is out. Where do I go from here?

  • HLSL 5 interpolation issues

    I'm having issues with the depth components of my shadowmapping shaders. The shadow map rendering shader is fine, and works very well. The world rendering shader is more problematic. The only value which seems to definitely be off is the pixel's position from the light's perspective, which I pass in parallel to the position. struct Pixel { float4 position : SV_Position; float4 light_pos : TEXCOORD2; float3 normal : NORMAL; float2 texcoord : TEXCOORD; }; The reason that I used the semantic 'TEXCOORD2' on the light's pixel position is because I believe that the problem lies with Direct3D's interpolation of values between shaders, and I started trying random semantics and also forcing linear and noperspective interpolations. In the world rendering shader, I observed in the pixel shader that the Z value of light_pos was always extremely close to, but less than the W value. This resulted in a depth result of 0.999 or similar for every pixel. I have already thoroughly debugged the matrices' validity, the cbuffers' validity, and the multiplicative validity. I'm very stumped and have been trying to solve this for quite some time. Misc info : The light projection matrix and the camera projection matrix are the same, generated from D3DXMatrixPerspectiveFovLH(), with an FOV of 60.0f * 3.141f / 180.0f, a near clipping plane of 0.1f, and a far clipping plane of 1000.0f.   • Finding the shortest path through a digraph that visits all nodes

    I am trying to find the shortest possible path that visits every node through a graph (a node may be visited more than once, the solution may pick any node as the starting node.). The graph is directed, meaning that being able to travel from node A to node B does not mean one can travel from node B to node A. All distances between nodes are equal. I was able to code a brute force search that found a path of only 27 nodes when I had 27 nodes and each node had a connection to 2 or 1 other node. However, the actual problem that I am trying to solve consists of 256 nodes, with each node connecting to either 4 or 3 other nodes. The brute force algorithm that solved the 27 node graph can produce a 415 node solution (not optimal) within a few seconds, but using the processing power I have at my disposal takes about 6 hours to arrive at a 402 node solution. What approach should I use to arrive at a solution that I can be certain is the optimal one? For example, use an optimizer algorithm to shorten a non-optimal solution? Or somehow adopt a brute force search that discards paths that are not optimal? EDIT: (Copying a comment to an answer here to better clarify the question) To clarify, I am not saying that there is a Hamiltonian path and I need to find it, I am trying to find the shortest path in the 256 node graph that visits each node AT LEAST once. With the 27 node run, I was able to find a Hamiltonian path, which assured me that it was an optimal solution. I want to find a solution for the 256 node graph which is the shortest.

    This question already has an answer here: How to remove Ubuntu and put Windows back on? 14 answers Im new here and have not found a post even close to this so here it is: i installed ubuntu 14.04.1 over my Windows 7 Home Premium installation. didn't loose any important data.skip to when the install is done i tried out ubuntu and got sick of it after a while.(the try ubuntu option was greyed out) i got sick of ubuntu after about an hour and i tried to boot into my recovery partition. That's where im running into trouble: you are supposed to hold down the numerical "0" while turning on the power. but it just proceeds to load grub/ubuntu and does not even try to boot into the recovery partition. "000000000000" is all i get from holding it down I know the recovery partition is intact,but i cant access it,even when setting a boot flag on it. i am stumped and i really need answers thanks in advance! specs Toshiba satellite l775 intel core i3 dual core processor original os:windows 7 home premium 64 bit sp1 let me know if you need more info!
