  I'm using kubuntu jaunty (i386 32bit), kernel 2.6.28-13-generic. I've 4Gb of RAM, of which only 3317Mb are seen by the system (I guess because of the 32bit system). I'm seeing that the pagecache utilization is continually growing, up to the point that the system is unusable (after a few days). This happens also when I don't do anything (all user applications closed and the bare minimum of services enabled). If enabled, the system starts to use swap space (using it all in the end). Even if swap is disabled, disk activity becomes continuous, with the system unresponsive.   I am really disappointed with Logitech. My first cordless wireless mouse was from them and it lasted like 5 years. I returned it under warranty and got a new one now 4-6 month later it is on the verge of breaking again.... You pay like $50 for this mouse and it lasts like 6 months that sad. I just lost faith in Logitech mice as I remember my bro also had a logitech mouse too and it broke after like 6 months. I think that is what MS calls notebook mice. So I am not sure if this would be a good mouse to get for a desktop. I see it uses like a micro usb receiver but I am not sure if it is smaller then a standard mouse. But almost all the mice I looked at at futureshop.ca or staples are labeled notebook mice or mobile mice. So not sure what mice would be right for me. I don't want a corded one though. I really liked the LX6 design alot but it can't last more than 6 months. Thanks

• Legacy non-dpi-aware application resolution scaling?

  Our environment prominently featuers an outdated but absolutely mission-critical Win32 application that is not dpi-aware. It is optimized for an 800x600 display. Most of our users now have 17"-20" displays with native resolutions ranging from 1280x1024 to 1680x1050. However, they still operate these displays at 800x600 because the text in this legacy application is otherwise too small. Of course, it also means that nothing quite fits on the screen in Office 2007. Most of our workstations still run Windows XP, but some are on Windows 7 and there are more to come. About one-third of our users run the app remotely via MS Terminal Services, and the remainder run it locally. Is anyone aware of any method that could be used to scale this specific application to about 170%, so that it would fill a 1280x1024 screen, without affecting other applications that work best at the display's native resolution? I know how to do this in Mac OS X, but I have never found a way to do it in Windows. Of course, this ideally would be something that we could push out via Group Policy. I suppose we even could create a custom MSI package to re-deploy the legacy application with some sort of display virtualization layer, if such a thing exists.

• Installing messaging software displays error 1324 invalid character

  Trying to install Reuters Messaging software onto a windows 7 pc we receive the error message Error 1324: The folder path 'My Documents' contains an invalid character We've tried installing the application using the local admin account and the user account which is an AD account (roaming?). This user account has administrative rights (i.e. should be allowed to install applications). The users 'My Documents' folder is located on a network drive, where only the user has access. We've tried experimenting with the HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer\ User Shell Folders registry entries and setting them to a local position (i.e. C:\Users\Username\Documents) but this didn't resolve the error. We've also tried the following which was taken from a website I can't remember the name of: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem Select the NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation entry and change the value to 0 Select the Win31FileSystem entry and change the value to 0 which didn't resolve the issue. Edit: This was also an issue when attempting to install the citrix native client necessary to run citrix application (*.ica extension). This made the same error box appear.

• most reliable linux terminal app / general procedures for process stability

  I've been using konsole (KDE 4.2) for a while now but it crashed recently. Konsole is efficiently designed to use one instance for all of the windows for your entire X session. Extra-unfortunately, because of this ingenuity the crash brought down all the humpty-dumptys and their bashes and their bashes' applications and all the begattens' begattens all the way down to Jebodiah Springfield into one big flat nonexistent omelette. The fact that this app is capable of crashing under any circumstances is pretty disappointing. Although KDE 4.2 is not expected to be entirely stable -- and yes, I know, I should update my distro -- it's still a no-sell for me, since if at all possible, this sort of thing Shouldn't Happen to something that's likely to be a foundation for an entire working environment. Maybe this is arrogant and unrealistic, but if it's possible to have something more stable, I want it. So other than running under screen -- which is fun, nifty, and thus far flawless in its reliability, but which has some issues with not understanding certain keycodes -- I'm looking for ways to improve my environment's reliability. The most obvious strategy is to cast about for a more reliable console app. A standard featureset -- which to me includes tabbed windows, Unicode support, and a decent level of keyboard shortcut configuration -- is pretty much essential. I'm currently running gnome-terminal and roxterm, both of which have acceptable featuresets (pretty much identical, actually; I think rox is actually the superset), and neither of which have provided me with extensive, objective reliability data. Not that they were expected to. Other strategies are also welcome. Were I responding to this question I would perhaps suggest backgrounding critical tasks with & and/or disowning them so they don't come down with the global pandemic. And stuff like that.

  I'm looking for a software (or set of software) that will let me combine spreadsheet and database workflows. Data entry in spreadsheet to enable simple entry from clipboard, analysis based on joins, unions and aggregates and pivot/data pilot summaries. So far I've only found either spreadsheets OR db applications but no good combination. OO base with calc for tables doesn't support aggregates f.ex. Google Spreadsheet + Visualizaion API doesn't support unions or joins, zoho db doesn't let me paste from clipboard. Any hints on software that could be used? Basically I'm trying to do some analysis of my personal bank transactions. Problem 1, ETL. The data has to be moved from my bank to a database. My current solution is to manually copy and paste the data into one spread sheet per account from my internet bank. Pains: Not very scriptable. Lots of scrolling to reach the point to paste. Have to apply sorting and formatting to the pasted data each time. Problem 2, analysis. I then want to aggregate the different accounts in one sweep to track transfers per type of transfer over all accounts. The actual aggregation is still unsolved because I can't find a UNION equivalent in the spreadsheets I've tried.

• Vista logs into black screen, "Application Error 0xc0000022" for explorer.exe

  Whenever I attempt to log into a Windows Vista computer (the only account on it), I'm presented with a black screen & a cursor. I can open Task Manager, and from there I can launch applications. It seems to be using Aero Basic (instead of the full Aero which I had set as default before the problem started). When attempting to launch "explorer.exe" I get "explorer.exe - Application Error 'The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000022). Click OK to terminate the application.'" Every now and then I get an error along the lines of "the application has failed to start because its side by side configuration is incorrect please see the application event log for more detail." I can boot into safe mode successfully, but I still get the black screen when I log into it in regular mode. I've tried most of the suggestions here, but did not work. I'm attempting to back up everything right now in case the only fix is to reinstall Windows. Has anyone seen this before?

• How to use cyg-wrapper to fork a new tab in win32 gvim

  I would like to set up an alias in my cygwin .bashrc that translates pathnames unix-to-dos and passes them to windows gvim in a new tab of an existing instance. I am trying to use Luc Hermitte's cyg-wrapper script for running native win32 applications from Cygwin as per this vim tip. Luc's example of how to use his script is: alias vi= 'cyg-wrapper.sh "C:/Progra~1/Edition/vim/vim63/gvim.exe" --binary-opt=-c,--cmd,-T,-t,--servername,--remote-send,--remote-expr' I do not understand this example because most of these vim parameters (-c,--cmd,--servername,--remote-send,--remote-expr, etc) require more information, and I have not found any example of how to supply the additional information to cyg-wrapper.sh. For example, calling C:/Progra~1/Edition/vim/vim63/gvim.exe --servername=GVIM --remote-tab-silent file1 & will open file1 in a new tab of existing (or non existing) instance GVIM, but calling gvim --servername accomplishes nothing on its own. Unfortunately, though, the corresponding cyg-wrapper phrase does not work: cyg-wrapper.sh "C:/Progra~1/Edition/vim/vim63/gvim.exe" --binary-opt=--servername=GVIM,--remote-tab-silent --fork=2 file1 If ran twice, this actually opens up two instances of gvim; it is as if the servername 'GVIM' is being stripped and ignored. How do you supply a servername to gvim --servername or a .vimrc to gvim -u using cyg-wrapper.sh? Furthermore, why is it that programs must be passed to cyg-wrapper.sh in the relatively obscure "mixed form?" For example, if I try cyg-wrapper.sh "/cygdrive/c/path/to/GVimPortable.exe" --binary-opt=--servername=GVIM,--remote-tab-silent --fork=2 I get "Invalid switch - "/cygdrive"." • setting up synergy (multi-computer shared input devices) new to mac

  I've just gotten a mac and the first thing I'm trying to do in setting it up for dev is to set-up synergy. I've run into countless issues, and am making progress, but that 'mac's just work' theory is getting tired really fast. I'd prefer running the mac as the server, as it's a desktop. why use my pc(laptop) as the server. So i downloaded synergy, and tried to edit the 'synergy.conf' file. First with textmate, then with apple script. Neither of these applications will open the file. Even after changing textmate to use plain text format and switching off a few other things to make it into a plain text editor. No good. Uh, isn't that what these script/text editors are for? Then I found SyneryKM which is a package to run synergy on osx. Took LOTS of fiddling, but I think I finally kinda got it figured out. I've got my pc & mac both running synergy. However, my pc will only connect to synergy using the ip address. No problem, however, my mac won't connect to itself as a synergy server using the IP address. If I use the ip address as a screen in the 'server configuration file', i get a 'Error: unknown screen name mymac'. I know this shouldn't be super complicated, and possibly not the place to find answers about synergy, but I couldn't find a better place, and there has been some talk of synergy here. Any chance somebody can help with this?

• Windows 7: Don't combine Taskbar Icons, but only display Icons

  I've never really liked this feature about Win7, but I guess I just got used to it. The feature I don't like is mousing over the win7 icons when there are multiple windows of the same type open. You have to waste that extra time choosing the window after it pops up and it's just clunky. The XP taskbar was nice, because you didn't have to go through any of this, but it had the problem where you ran out of taskbar space fast. I often resized my taskbar to take care of this. However, on Windows 7, I don't use up even 1/3 of my taskbar. I have all this space I can use, and instead it's all squished to the left, making me take extra steps. Are there any applications I can use to get this desired behavior, or else what route would you recommend to take to write this behavior myself? My first thought would be C# and the Windows taskbar apis. PS. If it's not clear what I'm asking for, please let me know, I'll try to be more specific.

• Can ping IP address and nslookup hostname but cannot ping hostname

  I have a DNS server set up on one of my machines using BIND 9.7 Everything works fine with it. On my Windows 7 desktop, I have statically-assigned all network values. I have one DNS server set -- my DNS server. On my desktop, I can ping a third machine by IP fine. I can nslookup the hostname of the third machine fine. • Recovering a VHD after resizing it using VBoxManage

  I am using VirtualBox 4.1.18 and had a virtual machine running Windows 8 RC with a single VHD, which was initially sized at 25GB (too small!). • VMware Fusion configuration files missing

  I need to set up port forwarding to my VM in Fusion 5. Everywhere on the net, the solution is described as editing the file: /Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/vmnet8/nat.conf However, on my install, that file doesn't exist. Neither does the vmnet8 directory. Here is the full content of VMware stuff I have in /Library/Application Support/: /Library/Application Support/ VMware/ VMware Fusion AdminWritable Shared vmInventory usbarb.rules VMware Fusion That's right: /Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/ exists but is empty. And there is no VMware folder in other Library directories on my system. I am running OS X 10.8.2. I just reinstalled Fusion 5.02, no change. Meanwhile, I have 3 VMs that work just fine. So how am I supposed to set up port forwarding with Fusion 5? Thanks, JD Edit: in a hunch, I tried ps ax | grep natd which returned: 9646 ?? S 0:00.01 /Applications/VMware Fusion.app/Contents/Library/vmnet-natd -s 7 -m /Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion/vmnet8/nat.mac -c /Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion/vmnet8/nat.conf So it seems that the configurations files are now in the directory /Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion. I'll work from here and edit this question as I make progress.

  I want to search for keyword, says 'action', in a bunch of files in my Windows PC with Emacs. It is partly because I want to learn more advanced features of emacs. It is also because the Windows PC is locked down by company policy. I cannot install useful applications like cygwin at will. • How to get html/css/jpg pages server by both apache & tomcat with mod_jk

  I've apache2 and tomcat6 both running on port 80 with mod_jk setup on ubutnu servers. I had to setup an error document 503 ErrorDocument 503 /maintenance.html in the apache configuration and somehow I managed to get it work and the error page is server by apache when tomcat is stopped. Developers created a good looking error page(an html page which calls css and jpg) and I'm asked to get this page served by apache when tomcat is down. When I tried with JkUnMount /*.css in the virtual hosting, the actual tomcat jsp pages didn't work properly(lost the format) as the tomcat applications uses jsp, css, js, jpg and so on. I'm trying if it is possible to get .css and .jpg served by both apache and tomcat so that when the tomcat is down I'll get css and jpg serverd by apache and the proper error document is served. Anyone has any technique? • How to stop Excel 2003 from loading a Gazillion files

  One of my soon-to-be-ex-friends got an Excel file from another friend of his and decided to click on it. It started opening all kinds of files from within Excel. Over 200 and still counting when he called me. I told him to go to task manager, which showed a LOT of files in the applications tab, but only one Excel.exe in the processes tab. Closing it down there, closed down Excel. I then CrossLooped in to see if I could give him a helping hand. Each time Excel was re-opened, the mass influx of files started. They were all kinds of files, PDFs, Docs, JPGs, even some spreadsheets. It looked like the end of solitaire, with multiple windows opening (XP) and the counter on the lone Excel button on the task bar counting off the files. I did the task manager exit routine and went looking for temp files. I CrapCleaned out the system. Made sure I went through the files created in the last hour and deleted anything with a temp anywhere in it. I also deleted the crappy infected/corrupted file from it's place on the desktop (yeah, I know, I yelled for 15 minutes on THAT subject). Despite a delousing, the restart of Excel, which complained of a deactivated add-in, would start the cascading windows, whether I answered yes or no to that question. Yes, it knew it had a serious crash, but why would it just keep on trying to load the bad file, even when I got rid of it? But here's the real question. WHERE was it loading from? I went through the backup folder and NOTHING was there! So what's the process for starting Excel WITHOUT it trying to do a crash recovery? Sort of makes me feel stupid at times. • Subversion and Quickbooks Files

  I currently have a large problem on one of the file servers I manage for an Accounting Firm. Quickbooks has a tendency to create multiple files of the same thing over and over to prevent data loss. This is a good thing when you handle just a few files. But at an accounting firm it becomes a problem. Some of the older clients have 5-10 files in their respective folders, each with a different cut off date. Because of user error some of these file aren't labeled properly with their correct cutoff dates. This is where Subversion came to mind. Using the revision system would allow for 1 file to be master and have all of its revisions. Has anyone ever tried this with Quickbooks files? I've only used SVN with code for applications making each file size much smaller. How does SVN stand up with larger files like 10-25MB? I'm not exactly sure how SVN handles revisions - does it keep a duplicate of the files and duplicates the disk space space needed?

• Multiple contacts with shared information

  Background: I currently have several hundred contacts, synchronized between a Microsoft Exchange server and several mobile devices. I also save exported copies of the contacts in .vcf format. Is there a good way (application, file format, whatever) to maintain contacts with shared information? A very common scenario is that I have contacts for two or more people who live in the same house, for example: John Doe 123 Main Street, Anytown USA Home: 555-555-1111 Work: 555-555-2222 Mobile: 555-555-3333 E-mail: [email protected] Jane Doe 123 Main Street, Anytown USA Home: 555-555-1111 Work: 555-555-4444 Mobile: 555-555-5555 E-mail: [email protected] As you can see, both contacts have the same home address and phone number, but distinct names and work and mobile phone numbers. (Other information might also be either shared or distinct.) The applications and file formats I'm familiar with don't seem to have a good way to deal with this. If I use a single "John & Jane Doe" contact for both, it's difficult to distinguish the distinct information (if I want to call Jane's mobile phone rather than John's). If I use a separate contact for each, I have to remember to update both of them (or all of them for N 2) when they move or change their home phone number. An ideal solution would let me create a record containing information for their household, and have each of their contact records contain a reference to the household record, so that when I view John's contact record I see both shared and distinct information. Is there anything out there that has good support this kind of thing? (I would think there would be, since it's a very common scenario.) (I suppose I could roll my own system that generates merged .vcf files from some extended format, but that wouldn't play well with synchronizing across multiple devices.)

• How can I set my bootloader to load my primary (C:) partition?

  I created 4 partitions and want to use them to have seperate Windows XP, Windows 7, (possibly) Windows Vista installations, and "WinDummy" (to test applications in Vista, XP or another OS). I used Norton Ghost to install an OS to the drive in about 3 minutes. My problem is that I installed the spare first on the 4th partition, then Windows 7 on the second. I tried to set the bootloader (with easybcd) to use the first partition - but it doesn't want to. Heres my debug screen on easybcd As you can see, the device is set to H and i cant figure out how to change it. I can make my bootloader use Windows 7 first, but I can't make it use my C: install of XP instead of my spare H:. How would I fix this? • Blue screen of death while installing any Adobe Air application

  Whenever I try to install an Air application I get a Blue Screen and then my system restarts. I cannot even take a screenshot of it. This happens with every air application I try to install. I also searched for the same on Adobe forums and found the same problem being faced by someone else. His problem was resolved by uninstalling a software named "Folder Lock". I searched my hard disk for this software and found one, so I deleted that software (shift+delete) and removed all it's traces from registry too but that still doesn't solved the problem. I also tried disabling the antivirus software and then install the air application but this also didn't helped. Here is the screenshot of the BSOD. I was able to install air applications earlier, but now I can't. Anybody having same sort of problem. One colleague of mine is also having the same problem. Please help me out. My system's config is as follows: Windows XP Home sp3 Flash Builder 4, with SDK 4.1, 3.5 installed in it. Adobe Air v 2.5 1.5 GB RAM 1.66 MHz processor Thanks

• weblogic plug-in apache http server location directive question

  We are using Weblogic Portal and Apache 2.x http server with the weblogic plug-in for apache for load-balancing. We have an application that right now can only be accessed from one of our managed servers. What I would like to do is use the Location directive to direct all requests for that page to the one managed server and I can't get it to work. The context that the portal tries to forward to is something like /MyWebApp?portalusername= (where equals a legitimate user. For example /MyWebApp?portalusername=joesmith. All other applications and the plug-in is load balancing as expected because every now and then you'll get sent to the second managed server for this particular application and its not deployed. I tried various things in the Apache http.conf like the following but can't seem to get it work. Any suggestions? The following is a snippet of the httpd.conf. • VMware databursts to vCenter

Be sure I will return with other problems :-) ] I have a strange occurence of regular databursts over my WAN links from 2 sites to a site with vCenter. What happens is that a vCenter server is managing local ESX 3.5 servers and 2 from 2 sites across a WAN link. Each server sends an approximately 3MB worth of TLS data (less than 10% of the time it varies to higher or lower) every 15 minutes (with a margin of 2 minutes). So far, I've not been able to single out a process that causes it. I looked through all applications on each site. So far, it seems to originate from one server on each site. Although it may be coincidence and therefore not relevant, I found that one server, with very few exceptions, does a burst at 00:00 on the hour. The other 3 during the hour are a bit off the 15 minute mark but back at the top of the hour, you can sync your watch on it. The other server follows 5 minutes after that with no such precision. But, as said, it never differs more than 2 minutes. Servers are ESX 3.5, vCenter is 2.5.
